Four killed in Apalachee High School shooting in Georgia, United States

Monday, September 9, 2024

On Wednesday morning, two fourteen year old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and two mathematics teachers, Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie, died in a mass shooting at Apalachee High School near Winder, Georgia, United States. Nine other people, eight students and one teacher, were hospitalized according to Chris Hosey, the director of Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). One of them has been transported by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital, Grady’s director of public relations, Danielle Hackett, told CNN.

As Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said at a news conference on Wednesday night, all of the hospitalized victims are expected to survive and are “going to recover well”. As some of law enforcement sources told CNN, there could be up to 30 people who were injured; video from outside the school showed several ambulances, besides a large active police presence.

According to the GBI, the suspect is a fourteen year old student, named Colt Gray. According to his classmate, he left the classroom at the beginning of their Algebra 1 class around 9:45 a.m. local time. He returned toward the end of the Algebra class and knocked on the door. A student opened the door, saw the gun, and refused to let Colt Gray in, according to an account from another student in the class, CNN reported. Thereafter, according to the same sources, Gray started shooting in the next classroom.

According to the GBI, the sheriff’s office received calls of an active shooter at the school at around 10:20 am, with law enforcement arriving at the scene “within minutes,” in addition to two school resources officers who were assigned to Apalachee High. As Hosey said, the resource officers “immediately encountered the subject within just minutes of this report going out… Once they encountered the subject, the subject immediately surrendered to these officers and he was taken into custody”.

As GBI’s Director Hosey said in a news conference on Wednesday night, authorities still are investigating how the suspect brought into the school the “AR-platform style weapon” that was used in the shooting; an AR-15 style rifle, as a law enforcement official told CNN. According to FBI Atlanta‘s post on X, it is aware of the situation and “agents are on scene coordinating with and supporting local law enforcement.”

The motive of Colt Gray is unknown. He is currently in custody and was charged with murder as an adult on Wednesday.

This shooting was the 45th school shooting in USA in 2024, according to a CNN analysis, and the deadliest so far this year – one of eleven school shootings with four or more deaths since 2008, when CNN first started tracking school shootings.

As of 2024, Apalachee High School has about 1,900 students in grades 9–12, with 528 students in 9th grade, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Around 8,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh

Tuesday, September 10, 2024

The Bangladeshi Foreign Affairs office reported Tuesday last week that around eight thousand Rohingya Muslim refugees from Myanmar had entered the country in the past two months. The conflict between Myanmar’s military junta and the Arakan Army has intensified, especially in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. According to Bangladeshi officials, the country cannot provide humanitarian shelter for any more refugees, and there has been discussion to prevent further arrivals. On August 25, which marked the seven-year anniversary of the conflict that forced the Rohingya to flee to Myanmar, tens of thousands of people attended rallies in Bangladeshi refugee camps.

With millions of Rohingya refugees, Bangladesh officials are now calling for international aid to help with the humanitarian crisis, as Myanmar currently does not grant basic human rights to the Rohingya, and they are unable to return home.

“Bangladesh is already over-burdened and unable to accommodate any more Rohingya,” said Mohammad Shamsud Douza, a Bangladeshi official who works with refugees.

Another official, Mohammad Touhid Hossain, asked India and other countries to allow refugees to enter and the international community to pressure the Arakan Army to cease its attacks on Rohingya. The Bangladeshi cabinet has planned a multi-day meeting, scheduled for this week, to discuss the refugee situation.

On Saturday, in the ninth edition of the T20 Men’s Cricket World Cup, Team India won against South Africa by seven runs. The final match was played at the Kensington Oval Stadium in Barbados. This marks India’s second win in the T20 World Cup, which was co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA between June 2 and June 29.

After winning the toss, India decided to bat first and scored 176 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Virat Kohli top-scored with 76 runs, followed by Axar Patel with 47 runs. Hardik Pandya took three wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets.

In the second innings, South Africa scored 169 runs for the loss of eight wickets, falling short by seven runs. Heinrich Klaasen scored the highest for his team with 52 runs, followed by Quinton de Kock’s 39 runs and Tristan Stubbs’s 31 runs. Among the bowlers, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje collectively took four wickets.

After the match, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from T20 international cricket. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded the Player of the Tournament, having taken fifteen wickets throughout the tournament.

South Africa’s captain, Aiden Markram commented after the match, “It’s just gut-wrenching. That’s really what it is. Each player has been on a different individual journey. And when you get really close like that, especially the nature of how the game went, it obviously adds to the emotions.”

Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Wednesday, September 11, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for September 11, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is easier; I got it in two. Beware, there are spoilers below for September 11, Wordle #1,180! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

They’re all common letters from our mnemonic today.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

You’ll find this in both a grocery store and a theater.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There are three vowels.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with A.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with E.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is AISLE.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE, which gave me four of five letters. While there are a few words that include A, I, S, and end with E, only one doesn’t have I as the third letter: AISLE.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “as a noun, a person in opposition, with or without a cause” and the answer contained four common letters and one fairly common letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was REBEL.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

Wordle alternatives

If you can’t get enough of five-letter guessing games and their kin, the best Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:
