Use This Trick to Drop Safari’s Picture-in-Picture Videos Anywhere on Your Screen
Safari used to be my favorite browser on Mac, but a few months ago, I made the switch to Firefox. One of my reasons for swapping was how Safari handles picture-in-picture videos. When a video enters picture-in-picture mode, Safari allows you to snap it to any of your screen’s four corners, but normally, it won’t let you place the frame anywhere else unless you dig into your settings. It turns out that Safari does support custom picture-in-picture frame placement, but the feature isn’t well explained.
How to use Picture-in-Picture video in Safari
In Safari, picture-in-picture videos exit the browser tab and appear in a floating box that stays on-screen even when you’re using other apps. This is helpful for multi-tasking, such as when you’re taking notes while watching a video. To use picture-in-picture, play the video, find the audio button in the address bar, click and hold it, mouse over Enter Picture-in-Picture, and release. If your video streaming site of choice doesn’t show this option, try using the PiPfier browser extension to increase your browser’s compatibility. You can also use PiPifier to more easily launch a video in picture-in-picture, just by navigating to a webpage with a video and selecting Run PiPifier under Safari’s Search button menu (the box with an arrow pointing upwards sticking out of it).
Once you see your video in a floating frame, it’s in picture-in-picture mode. If you try to drag it, you’ll notice that it snaps to one of the four corners of your Mac’s screen, but won’t go anywhere else.
How to place Safari picture-in-picture videos anywhere on your Mac
To place Safari picture-in-picture videos anywhere you want, hold the Command key on your keyboard and click-and-drag the picture-in-picture frame. When you release the frame, it will remain where you placed it. I learned about this tip through a Reddit post, and it’s already changed how I view Safari videos. Now, when my MacBook is connected to my 34-inch ultrawide monitor, I can place Safari picture-in-picture videos directly in my line-of-sight instead of banishing them to the far corners of the display.
Know that other browsers, such as Chrome and Firefox, support this functionality without the keyboard shortcut. With those browsers, you can click-and-drag any picture-in-picture video and place it anywhere without issue.

These Samsung Gaming Monitors Are up to $700 Off
It’s a good time to be a gamer looking for a new gaming monitor—that is, if you have a bit of discretionary income. The wildly over-powered Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor is $1,099.99 (originally $1,799.99), but if you don’t care for an OLED panel, the just-as-comically-wide Samsung Odyssey G9 gaming monitor is currently $799.99 (originally $1,299.99) after a $500 discount.
This Odyssey G9 gaming monitor was released in January of this year and is a refreshed version of the original Odyssey G9 gaming monitor with a new stand, HDMI 2.1, a black design, and a cheaper launching price of $1,299.99 (the 2020 version launched at $1,479).
The 2024 Odyssey G9 is a gamer’s dream, with a 1ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, Nvidia’s and AMD’s adaptive sync technologies, and a huge 49-inch diagonal screen with a sharp curvature of 1000R and a 178-degree viewing angle. Because of its curve, the monitor measures 11.5 inches front to back. So make sure you have enough space on your desk before you decide to buy it.
The VA LCD panel and matter screen has a 5,120 by 1,440 resolution with a 32:9 aspect ratio, which is equivalent to two side-by-side 2,560 x 1,440 monitors. If you’re an Xbox Series X or PS5 gamer, be mindful that they output at 16:9, meaning you’ll have empty space on the sides of the screen.
If you’re not sure if you should go with the more expensive OLED G9 or this more affordable LCD G9, consider the main two differences (outside of price). The OLED G9 doesn’t get as bright, with only 250 nits, while the LCD reaches 1,000 nit peak brightness. Also, the OLED gets “true black” with OLED technology, while the LCD won’t. If brightness is more important to you over colors—or if you’d just rather save some money—the Odyssey G9 gaming monitor is your best bet.

My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: This Stunning Samsung OLED Gaming Monitor
It’s not very often a gaming monitor comes onto the market and utterly dominates it the way the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor did in 2023. It was the first 49-inch OLED gaming monitor, boasting incredible specs and delivering great performance. But it had a big problem: a staggering list price of $2,199.
A year later, the list price of the G95SC has dropped to $1,799.99, but you can pick one up from Amazon right now for much less than that—$1,099. This is $50 off its lowest price ever, according to price-checking tools.
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is an ultrawide gaming monitor that is so powerful, it’s honestly overkill for most gamers—but if you can afford it, better specs never hurt anyone. It has a native resolution of 5,120 by 1,440 pixels, a 240Hz refresh rate, a rated 0.03ms response time, and a OLED panel with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The “true blacks” from the OLED panel and 4K resolution bring a beautiful image on its 49-inch screen and 32:9 aspect ratio. The main downside is that it only offers two USB ports.
A cool feature of the monitor is the Samsung gaming and media hub, an all-in-one streaming platform that lets you stream your games (think Xbox Game Pass) or media (like Netflix) on the monitor. If you’re a serious gamer looking to get one of the best OLED gaming monitors at a great price, it’ll be hard to beat this deal, even at nearly $1,100.
