Raheem Mostert joins Raiders, excited to work with Geno Smith and revitalize team’s rushing attack

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Raheem Mostert was on a call with Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and running backs coach Deland McCullough when he got a text from an unfamiliar number.

“Hey, this is Geno, I’m super excited to have you, man. We’re super excited to have you. Let’s get wins. Let’s get ready to work,” new Raiders quarterback Geno Smith wrote.

Smith’s text reassured Mostert he made the right decision to relocate his family and become a part of the storied franchise.

“That just tells you the type of player that he is and wants to be,” Mostert said Wednesday after signing a one-year contract with Las Vegas. “That right there in itself, for a guy that can reach out to so many other people … to reach out to me the way he did in that moment, I hadn’t even officially signed, makes it reassuring that he’s definitely on track to be something great and also this team.”

The 10-year veteran joins an offense he believes will be tailored to what he can bring to a backfield, as first-year coach Pete Carroll and Kelly try to revitalize a unit that ranked last with just 1,357 yards rushing in 2024.

“My role is whatever I can create it to be,” said Mostert who spent the last three seasons with Miami and is joining his seventh NFL team. “Obviously, there’s opportunity there. I’m going to come in the building ready to work.”

Though Mostert was plagued with injuries at the start of his career, the 32-year-old stayed healthy for the better part of his three years in Miami.

Mostert has played in 103 games with 39 starts and rushed for 3,791 yards on 759 carries, with 34 touchdowns. He’s also caught 111 passes for 899 yards and eight touchdowns. His best season was 2023, when he had 1,012 yards rushing and a league-leading 18 touchdowns and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

Over the last three seasons, Mostert’s 28 offensive touchdowns are tied for the ninth most in the league among running backs, while his career average of 5.0 yards per rush is tied for the fourth-highest among running backs during the Super Bowl era.

But it’s more than numbers with Mostert. He’ll be looked upon to lead a group of running backs that currently includes five others, none of whom has more than three years of experience.

Las Vegas might add to that in the NFL draft, with some analysts predicting the Raiders will select Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty of Boise State with the sixth overall pick. Mostert could become a mentor to the franchise’s running back of the future.

“I kind of take that with pride,” Mostert said. “One thing that I truly try to implement within the running back room is, ‘Hey, look, you help me feed my family, I’ll help you feed yours.’ … We all work together.”

Browns continue to attack Art Modell Law as “unconstitutional”

Thirty years after the Browns left Cleveland because they couldn’t get a new stadium, the Browns are attacking the law that was passed to keep the Browns from leaving Cleveland in order to get a new stadium.

Dueling pieces of litigation are pending over the Art Modell Law, aimed at preventing a repeat of the team leaving town.

Via the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns have asked to amend their pending lawsuit. It’s a basic procedural step that is routinely granted.

The Browns continue to attack the Modell Law as unconstitutional. The team’s overriding goal is to move to suburban Brook Park.

The Modell Law requires the team to provide six months’ notice before leaving town, with residents having a chance to buy the team.

Although it’s important for the city and the team to coexist, the lawyers are talking tough — as lawyers often do.

“Our actions in court are intended to ensure that the city’s irresponsible and baseless attempt to apply the Modell Law to the Browns does not slow our momentum to build a world-class stadium right here in Northeast Ohio for the Browns, our fans and the entire Ohio region,” Haslam Sports Group’s chief administrative officer and general counsel Ted Tywang said in a statement issued to the Plain Dealer.

The Browns filed suit in federal court. The City of Cleveland filed suit in state court. The Browns view federal court, where the judge is appointed for life and not subject to an election, as the preferred forum. The city sees state court, where the judge is accountable to the ballot box, as the better place for the case to be resolved.

Via the Plain Dealer, the Browns have attacked the city’s lawsuit as “legally meritless and fiscally irresponsible.” (That’s how the game is played; every civil defendant sees every case filed against it as meritless or frivolous.)

The team also has accused the Browns of attempting to “run out the clock so the Browns are unable to bring the Brook Park stadium to fruition by 2029, and so hold the team, its fans and the community hostage to an inferior alternative and the political whims of city managers.”

Even if the Browns manage to circumvent the Modell Law, they still need to strike a deal for public financing for a domed stadium at Brook Park. And they need to make it happen without the issue being put out to vote, because the citizens of very few if any cities, counties, or states would vote at this point to devote taxpayer funds to the construction of stadiums for sports teams with values approaching, if not exceeding, $10 billion.

A pair of five-figure donations from NBA figures Shaquille O’Neal and Draymond Green were allegedly embezzled by a Crips gang leader, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times, which details a bevy of other allegations against the man in question.

Among other things, federal authorities have accused Eugene “Big U” Henley Jr., described as a leader of the Rollin’ 60s set of the Crips, of murder, kidnapping, robbery, extortion and fraud. As of Wednesday, he is still at large, while 18 other alleged members of the Rollin’ 60s have been charged.

The gravest of accusations against Henley is the alleged murder of a musician, identified only with the initials “R.W.,” who was signed to Henley’s label and recorded a “defamatory song” after a pay disagreement.

Henley’s activities allegedly crossed over to the world of sports with donations from O’Neal and Green worth $20,000 to his non-profit, Developing Options. Authorities allege Henley committed wire fraud by embezzling more than $100,000 in donations from the non-profit.

Per the Times, Green wrote a check to Developing Options in August 2019, with all $20K getting transferred to Henley’s personal checking account, while O’Neal wrote a check for Developing Options and the Crenshaw Rams youth sports team, most of which also went to Henley’s account.

Additionally, it is alleged a professional boxer, identified as only A.B., was accused of cheating unidentified NBA players out of millions of dollars in a rigged dice game. Henley allegedly sent associates to “rough up” the boxer and get the NBA players’ money back. Henley also reportedly once recounted how he “got into it” with A.B. after the boxer allegedly cheated a current NBA All-Star out of $1.5 million and a former NBA All-Star out of $5 million, while mentioning a charge of $100,000 from the players to get their money back.

A cooperating witness reportedly claims he knew of times in which NBA players or celebrities would need to get approval from Henley to ensure their safety at parties and other events, with celebrities paying Henley for protection and approval “or face retaliation from the Big U Enterprise.”

The 58-year-old Henley faces up to 20 years in prison on a RICO charge and could get life in prison if convicted of murder.
