Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 20 – Ed Johnson (1969-72)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the “New Jersey Americans”.

Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today.

To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise’s jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 21st of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 20, which has has had a total of 28 players wear the number in the history of the team.

The fourth of those players wearing No. 20 played in the (then) New York (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, big man alum Ed Johnson. After ending his college career at Tennessee State, Johnson was picked up with the 34th overall selection of the 1968 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Atlanta, Georgia native would play the first season of his pro career with the (defunct) Los Angeles Stars in the ABA, and was dealt to New York in 1969. His stay with the team would span parts of two seasons, coming to an end when he was traded again, this time to the (also defunct) Texas Chaparrals in 1972.

During his time suiting up for the Nets, Johnson wore only jersey No. 20 and put up 13.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game.

Cowboys Sign UFL Star Who Just Couldn’t Wait To Get Inside The Star

Cowboys Sign UFL Star Who Just Couldn’t Wait To Get Inside The Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

FRISCO – Security here at The Star in Frisco is pretty tight.

That goes for the lowly media … and it even goes for relative unknowns with an outside chance to make the Dallas Cowboys’ 90-man roster.

So, to get in? You need permission. Or an invitation. Or a door key.

Perrion Winfrey finally got all three.

The Cowboys are hoping to continue their luck in signing players out of the UFL as our sources confirmed this week that the team is signing defensive tackle Winfrey after an All-UFL season with the Birmingham Stallions this spring.

After a standout college career at Oklahoma, Winfrey was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was waived after one year with the Browns before being picked up by the New York Jets the following season. He spent much of his one-year contract in 2023 on the injured reserve or practice squad before becoming a free agent and testing out his skills in the UFL.

Part of the issue for the 6-3, 290-pounder, who given his OU background probably knows his way around Dallas? A handful of behavioral issues, including a an accusation that he pulled a gun on a woman in Cleveland, leading to his Browns release.

He comes to Dallas with some ties, as during his time on the Jets‘ practice squad, he worked with Cowboys new defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton and fellow defensive tackle Solomon Thomas, who signed with the Cowboys earlier this offseason.

Can he turn things around here? He’s trying … by showing up early to work out here at The Star.

The Cowboys struggled stopping the run last season, and signing Winfrey continues the team’s efforts to enhance the interior defensive line. Dallas drafted two tackles in Jay Toia and Tommy Akingbesote, along with signing Thomas and re-signing emerging star Osa Odighizuwa.

Winfrey will head to training camp with a shot at earning his place on the Cowboys 53-man roster and adding depth to the trenches.

His connections to the staff should bode well for his causes, but he still must prove that he deserves the chance to play in the NFL.

Winfrey posted on social media his arrival at The Star, noting, “Soon as I got the code I was innit lol.”

So, he’s ready to show up for work as he just couldn’t wait to get inside The Star.

For the Cowboys, an upside is that he might join KaVontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey as UFL stars who become NFL standouts here. And another upside?

He’s got his entrance code.

The New York Liberty got Jonquel Jones back this week, then lost her for even more time.

The team announced the reigning Finals MVP will be out for 4-6 weeks due to ankle sprain from Thursday’s game against the Phoenix Suns, but noted she had ” avoided a long-term injury.” The injury occurred in the second quarter, with Jones falling to the ground in clear pain and limping to the locker room.

This sprain was aggravation of the injury Jones sustained earlier this month, under similar circumstances. She missed the Liberty’s next two games but was back on Tuesday, posting 10 points and 10 rebounds against the Atlanta Dream.

At age 31, Jones has continued to be a force down low for the Liberty. The former MVP has averaged 14.9 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.9 blocks in her seven full games with the 10-2 Liberty this season.

2025 Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster preview: RB Tank Bigsby

With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 91-man roster.

Going alphabetically, up is running back Tank Bigsby.

Tank Bigsby’s profile

  • Height: 5-11
  • Weight: 215
  • NFL experience: 2 seasons
  • Age: 22
  • College: Auburn
  • No. 4

2024 Snap count totals

  • Offense: 351
  • Special teams: 46

2024 PFF grades

  • Offense: 68.1
  • Special teams: 48.1

2024 Season Review

In his second NFL season, Bigsby took on a much larger role on offense, carrying the ball 168 times in 2024, compared to just 50 carries as a rookie. Bigsby averaged 4.6 yards per rush and scored seven touchdowns.

Those 4.6 yards per carry that Bigsby averaged were tied for the 13th-most among running backs. He was one of the more difficult ball carriers to bring down as well, ranking third in average yards after contact and 13th in missed tackles forced, despite being 28th in carries.

This all resulted in big plays for Bigsby, who was 11th in PFF’s breakaway rate, which measures how often a back had a rush of 15 or more yards.

On the flip side of all that, fumbles were an issue at times, with Bigsby losing three of them last season.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season

What the playing time and general workload will look like for Bigsby—as well as Travis Etienne and Bhayshul Tuten—within Liam Coen’s offense remains to be seen. That will be one of the more intriguing training camp battles to take place this summer.

However, this new-look Jaguars offense should lead to improved efficiency from the running back position. For one, GM James Gladstone has reshaped the offensive line unit with six new additions between free agency and the NFL draft. This has created a lot of competition, which hopefully results in better play up front.

In addition to that, the multiplicity element that Coen wants prevalent throughout the offense can help keep defenses off balance and guessing by throwing a variety of looks at them, which can create opportunities for the skill position players to take advantage of.

A strong running game is a key component to Coen’s offense, not to mention that having a reliable rushing attack keeps the offense ahead of the sticks and out of predictable passing situations.

Desmond Bane Sends Blunt Message on Magic-Grizzlies Trade: ‘My Heart Sank’

Desmond Bane Sends Blunt Message on Magic-Grizzlies Trade: ‘My Heart Sank’ originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Orlando Magic knew they needed to make some moves to take their team to another level next season. They’ve made progress by going to the playoffs the past two seasons, but they’ve been knocked out of the first round both times. Magic president Jeff Weltman let it be known that he was willing to do whatever it takes to improve the team, and he kept his promise.

The Magic recently made a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire Desmond Bane. In return, the Grizzlies received Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four first-round picks, and a pick swap. This is definitely a move that will help the Magic for seasons to come, and Bane seems to be excited about his new team.

In his media availability for the first time with the Magic, he spoke about how he felt when he heard the news about the trade.

“Before he told me where I was going, my heart sank, just because there’s 29 other teams outside of the Grizzlies that I could have ended up on,” Bane said via Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel. “Once he said Orlando, I was smiling through the phone. I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful like I was moving on from Memphis that fast, but I was genuinely excited about the new opportunity.”

The Magic are getting a player who was key in his role with the Grizzlies, as he was a reliable 3-point shooter, while also being a solid defender and playmaker. Those were just a few things the Magic were looking for, and they’re probably not done making moves just yet.

OU football lands Trace Rudd, 5-star kicker, in 2026 recruiting class

NORMAN — Oklahoma special teams coordinator Doug Deakin gained a big-time commitment on Saturday.

The Sooners notched a pledge from 2026 five-star specialist Trace Rudd on Saturday evening, he announced on social media. Rudd is ranked as the No. 27 kicker and No. 73 punter nationally by Kohl’s Professional Camps.

Rudd committed while on a visit during OU’s massive recruiting event this weekend.

Rudd competed at the 2025 Kohl’s Underclassman Challenge and scored 114.90 points on kickoffs, 14 points on field goals, and 99.45 points in punting. Rudd attends Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kansas.

Rudd’s commitment comes a day after 2026 four-star quarterback Bowe Bentley pledged to the Sooners. OU now has 11 players committed to its 2026 class.

Zach Schmit replaced Tyler Keltner, who started atop the depth chart, as the Sooners’ No. 1 kicker last season. After struggling in 2023, Schmit drilled nine of his 11 field-goal attempts this season and was a perfect 19 of 19 on extra points.

OU found its 2025 kicker following spring camp after landing UTSA transfer Tate Sandell in the transfer portal.

CBS Sports unsure on Michigan’s backup QB, lists Underwood and Keene for 2025

Though it looks like true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood is set to start for Michigan football in 2025, it’s not exactly clear. And that’s because the Wolverines brought in former Fresno State signal caller Mikey Keene to compete with him. And Keene, who very well could have started at the outset of the season, was injured all spring, giving Underwood the keys to the Cadillac for all 15 practices.

Thus, as CBS Sports works to determine who the best backup quarterbacks in the country are, it finds itself at something of a crossroads.

Michigan football did make the list, but CBS Sports’ Will Backus was ambivalent, listing both Underwood and Keene as one of the potential best QBs in the country, given that we don’t know who will actually be starting at the outset of the season.

It’s more a question of when, and not if, Underwood will emerge as Michigan’s starter. He’s simply too talented to keep in the pen for long. Keene might at least get a chance to secure his spot through the first few games, though. Regardless of who goes out there first, Michigan is in a great spot with its second option.

Underwood was the top prospect in the class of 2025. He’s got a college-ready frame, a live arm and the talent to elevate a stagnant Wolverines offense. Keene, meanwhile, brings 34 games of starting experience from stops at UCF and Fresno State. He’s got more than 8,000 yards passing and 65 touchdowns in his career.

While Keene does have the most experience, by far, on the roster, Underwood is the most talented. Thus, it’s our opinion, given that he will have nearly 40 practices under his belt by Week 1, the freshman will get the nod, and the elder statesman will be waiting in the wings, just in case.

But Keene isn’t the only one. After all, Michigan did bring in former Miami, Missouri, and East Carolina quarterback Jake Garcia last week to bolster the roster — also just in case.

Here is the current quarterback roster:

  • graduate Jake Garcia (via East Carolina)
  • graduate Mikey Keene (via Fresno State)
  • senior Davis Warren (recovering from torn ACL in ReliaQuest Bowl)
  • redshirt freshman Jadyn Davis
  • true freshman Bryce Underwood
  • true freshman Chase Herbstreit

Angel Reese Reacts to Kamilla Cardoso News After Sky Loss

Angel Reese Reacts to Kamilla Cardoso News After Sky Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky didn’t have the Saturday afternoon they were hoping for. They hosted the Phoenix Mercury, looking to pick up their fourth win of the 2025 WNBA season. Unfortunately for them, they were blown out once again—this time, 107-86.

Reese finished with nine points, just two rebounds and two assists. The two rebounds are tied for the fewest she’s ever recorded in a single game across her WNBA, college basketball and high school career.

Her teammate Kamilla Cardoso played well, though. The 6-foot-7 center finished with 17 points and three rebounds.

Despite the loss and falling to 3-9 on the season, Cardoso’s play was worthy of an announcement after the game. The team took to social media, sharing that she was Chicago’s player of the game.

“KMILL,” the Sky wrote.

Reese, who played just 21 minutes compared to her usual 30-plus, was one of many who saw the post, reacting not with words, but with a subtle like.

Reese and Cardoso have some history from their college days, when they went head-to-head in SEC matchups. Reese played at LSU, and Cardoso was with South Carolina. Cardoso won both of the games they faced each other.

They were both then drafted by the Sky in the 2024 WNBA draft, with the center going third overall and the forward going seventh overall.

Chicago will look to regroup as they have a quick turnaround, facing the Atlanta Dream on Sunday in Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN3.
