Golden State Warriors jersey history – No. 15 – Phil Chenier (1981)

The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history.

Founded in 1946 during the Basketball Association of America (BAA — a precursor league of the NBA) era, the team has called home the cities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Diego.

To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Warriors Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. For this article, we begin with the 15th of 27 players who wore the No. 15 jersey for the Warriors.

That player would be Golden State guard alum Phil Chenier. After ending his college career at Cal, Chenier was picked up with the fourth overall selection of 1971 Supplemental Hardship draft by the (then) Baltimore Bullets (now, Washington Wizards).

The Berkeley, California native would play the first nine seasons of his pro career with the Bullets, and also played for Indiana Pacers before signing with the Golden State Warriors for the last stop of his NBA career in 1981, just nine games.

During his time suiting up for the Warriors, Chenier wore only jersey No. 15 and put up 3.2 points per game.

Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 20 – Randy Mahaffey (1968-69)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the “New Jersey Americans”.

Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today.

To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise’s jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 21st of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 20, which has has had a total of 28 players wear the number in the history of the team.

The second of those players wearing No. 20 played in the (then) New York (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, forward alum Randy Mahaffey. After ending his college career at Clemson, Mahaffey was picked up with the 16th overall selection of the 1967 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.

The LaGrange, Georgia native would play parts of the first two seasons of his pro career with the ABA’s (defunct) Kentucky Colonels instead, however, coming to an end when he was dealt to New York in 1968.

His stay with the team would span just 48 games before he would be dealt again, this time to the (also defunct) Carolina Cougars in 1969.

During his time suiting up for the Nets, Mahaffey wore only jersey No. 20 and put up 13.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray ranked as ‘volatile veteran’ in new QB tiers

Yes, it is the season of lists and rankings. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin ranked and tiered all 32 starting or projected starting quarterbacks around the NFL for 2025.

The tiers?

  • Tier 1: Transcendent talents
  • Tier 2: Borderline stars
  • Tier 3: Promising prospects
  • Tier 4: Volatile veterans
  • Tier 5: Prized projects
  • Tier 6: Holdovers and placeholders

As this is a site about the Arizona Cardinals, we want to know where Kyler Murray falls.

He was put in the tier for volatile veterans.

We’re entering Year 7 of the Murray era in Arizona, and no one seems to know whether the former No. 1 pick is past, within or approaching his prime. The quick-footed dual threat can still crack highlight reels with elusive moves and arcing downfield shots, but he’s tended to be more volatile than settled as a passer.

His 2024 season didn’t help. After his return from a torn ACL for the second half of 2023, he was efficient but not spectacular. He was inconsistent last season and eight of his 11 interceptions came in the final seven games, suggesting volatility.

Outside of Arizona, this ranking makes sense. If you pay attention to how he plays and the context of some of his inconsistencies (often trying to make up for bad defenses).

Murray is truly right on the edge of borderline star and volatile veteran. Opponents view him as an elite playmaker.

Murray is truly in a critical year. How he performs this year will more or less determine how he is viewed for the rest of his career.

Dolphins’ Terron Armstead Makes Admission on Rams’ Jared Verse

Dolphins’ Terron Armstead Makes Admission on Rams’ Jared Verse originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Former Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints left tackle Terron Armstead announced his retirement this offseason. The 12-year veteran cited his injuries as what finally convinced him to make the decision.

Since his retirement, the offensive lineman has made numerous radio and podcast appearances, being open and honest about his playing career and giving his opinions on the league.

On an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Armstead was asked which players he won’t miss playing against. Armstead had a quick and deliberate answer.

“That young boy Jared Verse? I’m cool. I’m good, I never have to see that man again,” Armstead said. “I’m OK with never seeing that young man again in my life. Bull rush different – Dawg, it’s different.

“You know that it’s coming, you brace yourself. He’s different. Jared Verse is different. He will be a defensive player of the year one of these days. Mark my words.”

The Rams drafted Verse in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he went on to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. Verse’s rookie campaign included 66 tackles, 11 TFLs, 18 quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles.

The Rams’ rookie faced the Dolphins in Week 10 and collected a sack, two TFLs, and a forced fumble.

In addition to Verse, Armstead named some of the top edge rushers in the NFL, like Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, and Trey Hendrickson, as other guys he’s happy he won’t be lining up against anymore.

Not only is that elite company for Verse, but the words used to describe the young edge rusher by the 12-year NFL veteran tackle can’t be taken lightly. Verse already won Defensive Rookie of the Year, and there could be many more accolades to follow.

But, for Armstead’s sake, he won’t have to worry about blocking the young talent anymore.

Phillies Trade Idea Lands Guardians’ All-Star Closer Emmanuel Clase Amid Bullpen Woes

Phillies Trade Idea Lands Guardians’ All-Star Closer Emmanuel Clase Amid Bullpen Woes originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ bullpen has emerged as a top priority, with the trade deadline looming. After losing key left-hander Jose Alvarado to an 80-game suspension, replacement closer Jordan Romano has battled inconsistencies, making the need for a dependable late-inning arm ever more present.

Yahoo Sports MLB Insider Russell Dorsey suggests the Phillies make a surprising deadline move and target Cleveland Guardians’ closer Emmanuel Clase.

“Last season, there wasn’t a better reliever in baseball than Emmanuel Clase,” wrote Dorsey. “He was so good that he finished third in AL Cy Young voting, a sign of his sheer dominance during the regular season.” Despite those accolades, Dorsey notes that Clase “struggled in last year’s postseason, and thus far, those struggles have carried into 2025.” The three-time All-Star is 4-1 with a 3.82 ERA across 32 appearances this season — hardly the kind of dominance fans have come to expect.

That said, the former All-Star appears to have put his early-season struggles behind him. “Over his past 15 outings, he has a 1.88 ERA with seven saves and has looked more like the two-time AL Reliever of the Year,” Dorsey wrote.

With Clase seemingly back to his best and locked into a team-friendly deal through 2026 — with options for 2027 and 2028 — Dorsey writes, “This could be the perfect time for a contender to woo the Guardians into trading their longtime closer.”

Acquiring one of baseball’s elite ninth-inning arms will not come cheap. But for a Phillies team with serious World Series ambitions and an obvious need at the back end of the bullpen, Clase could be exactly what they are looking for.

Ilia Topuria Confirms Interest In Becoming First UFC Triple Champion

Ilia Topuria Confirms Interest In Becoming First UFC Triple Champion originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Former UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria will chase history as he squares off against Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title in the main event of UFC 317, taking place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 28. The Spaniard is on a generational run in the promotion, vying to add his name to the list of UFC champions who have won belts in multiple divisions.

The undefeated Topuria, who vacated his 145-pound title to chase lightweight gold, has now set his sights on an even grander prize.

During a pre-fight press conference ahead of his UFC 317 clash with Oliveira, Topuria declared he would be interested in a potential welterweight title shot against Islam Makhachev.

Topuria told media members in attendance, “If Islam becomes the welterweight world champion, for sure I’m going to push for that shot also.”

While he has teased a potential run at welterweight in the past, this time he has verbally confirmed he wants to challenge for a championship belt in a third division, a feat that has never been accomplished in UFC history.

At the top of his mind, the main goal is to secure that coveted fight against Makhachev that has alluded him for so long. Topuria has previously accused Makhachev of avoiding a potential lightweight bout, branding him a coward and claiming that the Dagestani fighter is running from the challenge.

“If he wins the title, and I win the title in the lightweight division, maybe I move up or he comes down to the lightweight division and we have the fight that everyone wants to see,” Topuria clarified further.

Topuria also expressed his frustration at the fact that he is not currently lined up with Makhachev, and must face Oliveira instead, saying, “To be honest, I wanted to face [Makhachev] because he was the guy who was dominating everyone in that weight division. But at the end of the day, I can’t control what they do.”

Despite his words about Makhachev, Topuria notes that he must remained focused on his upcoming fight with Oliveira.

“Every fight is a huge challenge,” Topuria said regarding the difficulty of fighting Oliveira compared to Makhachev. “There are no easy fights when you get on this level.”

Ohio State men’s hockey releases 2025-2026 nonconference schedule

The Ohio State men’s hockey team surprised a lot of people with their unexpectedly high level of play this past season. The Buckeyes lost a lot of key players but found a way to plug in more talent and shock a lot of people by making it to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Things didn’t end all that well on the national scale in the postseason, but it was still an overachieving year in which OSU went 24-12-2 overall and finished third in the League with a 14-9-1 record. It was a fun season, one that it hopes it can build momentum off of and take it into this upcoming season.

And while we won’t know the Big Ten schedule until a future date, the program did announce its nonconference schedule this past week, so if you are an ice hockey fan, and one that loves to watch the Scarlet and Gray, you’ve got something to look forward to.

All told, the Buckeyes will host five nonconference games and go on the road for another five. Here’s how it all plays out prior to hitting the conference for Big Ten play:

      2025-26 Ohio State Men’s Hockey

Nonconference Schedule (home games in bold)

      Oct. 10-11 – Northern MichiganOct. 17-18 – at UConnOct. 24-25 – Sacred Heart UniversityNov. 28-29 – at Arizona State UniversityJan. 2 – Bowling GreenJan. 3 – at Bowling Green

It won’t be an easy road for Ohio State — it never is in the Big Ten — but hopefully, the Buckeyes can win their fair share of these nonconference games to prepare for what’s to come in conference and beyond. And while we are at it, the deadline to renew season tickets is 4 p.m. ET June 30, and new season ticket packages are available now. For more information or to view available seating options, go online or contact the Ohio State Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GOBUCKS or by emailing athletic.tix@osu.edu. Other ticket options including groups, miniplans, and single games, will be available for purchase later this summer.
