Titans’ defense lands in bottom third of NFL in PFN’s latest rankings

Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi made many roster changes this offseason. Through free agency and the draft, the Titans are in the thick of a rebuilding season. There is an aura of hope surrounding the team, though, stemming from the excitement Cam Ward brought to the organization. The offensive issues have largely been addressed despite the lack of ‘big names’ added. But what about the defense?

Borgonzi was very focused on the offense this offseason, and rightfully so. The defense didn’t need as many adjustments, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t areas of opportunity. The Titans made a few adjustments, but Pro Football Network doesn’t think it’s enough, ranking the Titans’ defense in the bottom third of the NFL.

22) Tennessee TitansCam Ward has brought excitement to Tennessee, but this defense has been trending in the wrong direction, and a shiny new toy under center isn’t going to help correct course. In 2022, the Titans were ranked as our 12th-best defense, but they regressed to 20th in 2023, before finishing 22nd last season.Only the Panthers and Raiders were worse at generating pressure when blitzing than Tennessee last season — that needs to be rectified for this team to have any chance of showing signs of growth in 2025.

Well, Borgonzi added Dre’Mont Jones, Cody Barton, and Oluwafemi Oladejo, among others, to help with getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. No, those aren’t big names, and Oladejo is a rookie, but it’s not always about having a big name. Most of the time, it’s about how players fit together on the field. When players fit well together, complement each other, and are all on the same page, that’s when you see true growth and improvement.

Having the 22nd-ranked defense with a group that is untested isn’t terrible. It may not be accurate, but again, they’re untested, so it’s hard to say PFN is wrong. This writer doesn’t necessarily agree with the placement, but I understand why they landed where they did. Dennard Wilson will need to get his players on the same page if the Titans want to see improvement in 2025.

Heat Expected to Pursue Kings Star if Kevin Durant Plan Fails

Heat Expected to Pursue Kings Star if Kevin Durant Plan Fails originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The NBA offseason is quickly approaching and one team that has some key decisions to make is the Sacramento Kings.

Sacramento failed to make the playoffs after they finished ninth in the Western Conference and were eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament.

Due to this, the Kings now have a major decision to make regarding their roster as they could elect to begin a rebuild or just retool their roster.

Either way, Sacramento is expected to move on from at least one of their star players in Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan or Zach LaVine.

One team has emerged as a potential trade suitor for DeRozan after a report came out on Wednesday.

According to Kings insider James Ham, the Miami Heat are expected to show interest in DeRozan this offseason if they are unable to land Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns.

Of course, it has been reported that the Heat are one of Durant’s preferred landing spots this summer but the Suns have not been intrigued by any of their offers thus far.

Because of this, Miami could end up shifting their focus to DeRozan and it is likely that the Kings would want the Heat’s 20th overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft in a potential trade.

For the Heat, adding DeRozan would give them a star forward that would be a great backup plan if they are unable to land Durant as he would provide them with another great scorer next to Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo.

A trade would also make sense for Sacramento, especially if they are able to land Miami’s first-round pick in the upcoming draft since the Kings do not currently own a first-round pick.

Despite this, the Kings would likely also want one of Miami’s young players in a potential trade and with the Heat unwilling to meet Phoenix’s asking price for Durant, they may also not be willing to meet Sacramento’s for DeRozan.

Real Madrid’s Club World Cup Streak Ends Under Xabi Alonso vs Al Hilal

Real Madrid’s Club World Cup Streak Ends Under Xabi Alonso vs Al Hilal originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Real Madrid’s debut in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup did not end as expected. They drew 1-1 against Al Hilal at the Hard Rock Stadium. Both teams ended with one point after the first matchday of the group.

Real Madrid were the favorites ahead of the game and are among the top picks to win the Club World Cup this season.

Despite taking the lead in the first half, Al Hilal remained competitive against Los Blancos and found an equalizer. The Club World Cup has already produced shocking results, and this one is arguably one of the most surprising.

This was Xabi Alonso’s first match as head coach of Real Madrid, and the result ended a streak in this competition that the club has held since 2000.

Al Hilal end Real Madrid CWC Winning Streak

Since 2000, Real Madrid has had a winning streak that has lasted until today. The Spanish giants won five Club World Cups and the Intercontinental Cup in 2002 and last year.

Real Madrid’s International Trophies since 2000

  • 2002 Intercontinental Cup
  • 2014 FIFA Club World Cup
  • 2016 FIFA Club World Cup
  • 2017 FIFA Club World Cup
  • 2018 FIFA Club World Cup
  • 2022 FIFA Club World Cup
  • 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup

Real Madrid took the lead in the 34th minute due to a lethal counter-attack started by Gonzalo Garcia. The 21-year-old scored in the box after receiving a great pass from Rodrygo on the right.

Al Hilal drew the game in the 41st minute thanks to a penalty converted by RubenNeves. Raul Asencio caused the penalty after bringing down Al Hilal striker MarcosLeonardo.

Real Madrid had the chance to win the game due to a penalty given near the 90th minute. Federico Valverde’s penalty was saved by Yassine Bounou.

Xabi Alonso Post-Match Interview

After his first game as coach for Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso explained what went wrong during the game. The coach spoke about the positives of the game despite the result.

Xabi Alonso: “I didn’t like the first half. We were better in the second half, with more quality, more balance and faster. We improved in the second half. We were able to play in their half for much longer, had better chances, and controlled the game better. Of course, the principle will be to start building something.”

The Spaniard manager spoke about the short time he has spent with the team, but he shows optimism for what is to come.

Xabi Alonso: “I haven’t spent much time with this team. In every game, we have to take advantage and learn from what we can improve on, and certainly every game will give us lessons to improve on.”

An interesting take came from Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who explained that the team has yet to fully develop under the new instructions of Xabi Alonso.

He mentioned the team is still playing the same way they did under their former manager Carlo Ancelotti, but expects to see the team change soon.

Thibaut Courtois: “We still have Ancelotti’s automatism, and that cannot be changed in four days. We needed to have more possession and not run so much after the ball. In the second half, we were better.”

Xabi Alonso’s Worrying Update on Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe was not part of the squad for Real Madrid’s game today after not training yesterday due to a fever. The French star was expected to play today as he trained ahead of the game.

With him missing out today, many wonder if he will be back for Real Madrid’s next game on Sunday against Pachuca. Xabi Alonso gives a worrying update on the striker.

Xabi Alonso: “I don’t know if Mbappe will be back for the next game. We’ll see, he wasn’t doing well in the last 2 days, he’s sick.”

‘We Needed to Turn It Around’ — Tom Brady Reveals the Secret Ingredient to His Patriots Success

‘We Needed to Turn It Around’ — Tom Brady Reveals the Secret Ingredient to His Patriots Success originally appeared on Parade.

Tom Brady knows there’s much more to life than being a household name.

While addressing a room of reporters — as well as his parents, Tom Brady Sr. and Galynn Brady — at the opening of the Hall of Excellence at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas, the former pro quarterback gave a moving speech about his success and turning around the New England Patriots’ losing franchise when he was drafted.

“I showed up with a great attitude, and I showed up with the same endearing attitude that I had with my [University of] Michigan teammates that made me team captain,” Brady says, adding that things were “very different” when he got to pro sports. “It’s very individual-focused. It’s always about ‘me and my contract, me and my celebrity, me and my fame.’”

The 47-year-old was drafted 199th overall in the sixth round by the Patriots in 2000. Brady went on to play 20 seasons with the team, including winning six Super Bowls. In 2020, he became a Tampa Bay Buccaneer and played with the team for three seasons, leading them to a Super Bowl victory in 2021 before retiring for good in 2023.

Despite being picked towards the end of his draft class or starting as a backup throughout his high school and collegiate career, Brady kept things positive and focused on showing up as his best self.

“What can I get from this moment?” the father of three says he asked himself when he initially got to New England. “I brought a different attitude, and I put the team first. And, Coach [Bill] Belichick saw that in me, and he was trying to change the culture of what that team was because the Patriots lost a lot. They weren’t a good program, and we needed to turn it around.”

He continues, “I worked my tail off for the entire first year. I’d show up on Friday mornings when the entire team was practicing at 1 o’clock. I showed up at 6 a.m. to do workouts with the strength coach in the indoor facility every Friday where I could workout because I wasn’t good enough physically to compete at a professional level with the other guys. They were bigger, they were stronger, they were faster.

“You guys saw my freaking draft photo that’s still out there,” Brady adds with a smile and a chuckle. “It was pre digital era. I didn’t realize that I would still be living that thing down, 23 years later, every time I see it come up on the freaking screen, but it’s a great reminder to me that it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish. And what I wanted to work toward that day was [do things] just like I did at Michigan. I wanted to bring that great attitude, and I wanted to earn it. I wanted to earn the respect of my coaches through my work ethic and through my commitment to the team and the commitment to what we were trying to accomplish together.”

Now, fans of Brady’s will get to see some of his memorabilia on display at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas.

Created in partnership with Brady and his family, along with sportscaster Jim Gray and his wife Fran-Vettor Gray, the exhibit — which opens to the public on June 20 — will show off Brady’s seven Super Bowl rings along with other never-before-seen items from other greats in sports and entertainment like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Babe Ruth and even Oprah Winfrey.

“[There have] been a lot of times where we conceived this amazing idea, and we had these great artifacts that a lot of times will sit in people’s closets for nobody to see, and we all collect them and keep them, and they’re meaningful to us, but the reality is, they should be on display,” Brady says.

“They’re for people to come and see and to witness and to look at and say, ‘Man, maybe one day that will be me.’ And I think, to have those artifacts now displayed in such a beautiful venue, this amazing resort that’s filled with so many unique visitors every year, it’s going to be… There’s no greater destination in the world for this Smithsonian of sports artifacts. In fact, I don’t think Smithsonian can handle what we put together.”

Tickets for the Hall of Excellence are between $20-$35 and are available to purchase now.

Q&A: Dave Roberts says Mark Walter will help make Lakers a perennial title contender

Dodgers owner and chairman Mark Walter has agreed to purchase a majority stake in the Lakers. (Jordan Strauss / Jordan Strauss/invision/ap)

The Buss family’s decision to sell its majority stake in the Lakers to Dodgers controlling owner Mark Walter sent shockwaves through L.A. on Wednesday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was among those surprised by the development. Speaking to reporters before his team’s game against the San Diego Padres at Dodgers Stadium, Roberts shared his thoughts on what Walter could bring to the Lakers.

Question: What’s your reaction to the deal?

“Obviously he’s had some kind of stake the last few years or whatever. He’s really committed to the city of Los Angeles in various ways. Sports is something that he’s very passionate about, and certainly Los Angeles sports. I think it’s a very exciting day for the Lakers, for the city of Los Angeles. And I think speaking from [the perspective of] a Dodger employee, he’s very competitive. He’s going to do everything he can to produce a championship-caliber team every single year and make sure the city feels proud of the Lakers and the legacy that they’ve already built with the Buss family.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts smiles before a game against the Texas Rangers in April. (Julio Cortez / Associated Press)

When did you learn that about him?

“I would say probably seven, eight, nine years ago, just having a conversation with him as far as how much he enjoyed spending time in Los Angeles, and a lot of low-hanging fruit in the sense of what this city could be, already is, and can be. He wanted to infuse kind of his intelligence, his resources. He just wanted more skin in the game. That’s just speaking for him. But he’s obviously a very smart person.”

How have you seen him be competitive

“I think he does everything he can to provide resources, support. He wants to win. He feels that the fans, the city, deserves that. I think that’s never lost. It’s more challenging us always to, how do we become better and not complacent or stagnant to continue to stay current with the market and the competition to win not only now but for as far as we can see out.”

What makes a good owner?

“I think a good owner in my eyes is a person that lets the people that he hires do their jobs. He does a great job of letting Stan and Andrew and Gomer, all those guys, Lon, do their jobs right. But also kind of holding us all accountable, and also providing resources needed. In this case, players, to field a team that’s warranted of a championship-caliber team every year. Also, doing stuff for charity and appreciating not only the baseball side but just as important, the business side. He invests a lot of resources in that as well. I think that that’s kind of all-encompassing of what I’ve been fortunate to be around.”

Does this mean you’re sitting courtside?

“Yes. (Laughter). I’m sure a lot of people are hitting Mark up, but I might add myself to the list.”

NFL Win/Loss Preview Series: Houston Texans

NFL Win/Loss Preview Series: Houston Texans originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Situated in arguably the league’s softest division, can the Texans reclaim the positive trajectory from C.J. Stroud’s rookie campaign?

TEXANS’ WIN/LOSS ODDS:

  • Over 7.5 Wins: (-240)
  • Over 9.5 Wins: (+100)

Houston entered 2024 with aspirations of a deep playoff run behind CJ Stroud, just a sophomore yet still among the preseason MVP favorites. HOU appeared to be right on schedule, getting out to a great start while soaring to 5-1 record. However, questions regarding competition quality (IND, CHI, JAX, NE) brought some of their offensive struggles, particularly protection into focus.

CJ Stroud’s talent was never in question…

…it’s a matter of protecting a marquee pocket passer.

Check out the year-over-year drop-off in passing from Stroud and the Texans — and why it so desperately needed addressing.

  • +0.11 EPA/Dropback 📉 -0.03  EPA/Dropback
  • 100.8 Passer Rating 📉 87.0 Passer Rating
  • 273.9 Passing Yards Per Game 📉 219.2 Passing Yards Per Game
  • 8.2 Yards Per Attempt 📉 7.0 Yards Per Attempt
  • 4.6 TD: INT 📉 1.2 TD: INT
  • Sack Rate 7.1% 📉 8.9% Sack Rate

So the Texans learned in real-time the value of age-old adages about football games being won in the trenches — though you may not have guessed it from their initial actions. Houston totally cleaned house in the OL room, signing Cam Robinson, trading former first-rounder Kenyon Green for DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson and longtime stalwart LT Laremy Tunsil for picks used to select OL Aireontae Ersery out of Minnesota at pick 2.48.  That’s a lot of new faces.

Houston may very well have done enough to rectify their protection issues, but keep in mind that many moving pieces can take time to gel. I tend to think just a slight blocking upgrade from last year will work wonders for Stroud — boosting WR Nico Collins to the level of true alpha-superstar, commanding enough extra attention to free up the offseason cavalry of Christian Kirk and rookie Jayden Higgins. Toss Nick Chubb into the backfield fold for some second-half impact and color me excited.

LAGHEZZA’S LEAN:

Houston won ten games last season, returns an excellent defense and should be markedly improved — plus, last I’ve checked hasn’t changed divisions. The Texans went 5-1 in the AFC South last season and could improve on that mark in 2025. Don’t get me wrong, I’m bullish on the team as a whole but it’s absolutely the schedule putting me over the top on HOUSTON TEXANS OVER 9.5 WINS (+100) on Fanduel.

Red Sox Reportedly Had Eyes Set on Different Trade Package for Rafael Devers

Red Sox Reportedly Had Eyes Set on Different Trade Package for Rafael Devers originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Craig Breslow’s tenure as the Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer hinges on the success of the team after trading away Rafael Devers. If the daring move pays off, Breslow looks like a genius who risked verbal persecution to propel Boston to new heights. Should the Red Sox consistently fall short of the playoffs and the players obtained in the trade not fulfill their potential, Breslow will likely be dismissed, and his legacy marred as the individual who evicted Rafael Devers from Boston.

The primary reaction to the move is around the package Boston received in return for Devers. Jordan Hicks, who currently has a 6.47 ERA, is set to forgo his starting pitching experiment and return to the bullpen after two unsuccessful seasons with the San Francisco Giants. Left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison certainly possesses a high upside, but the 23-year-old’s struggles are evident. In the 35 major league starts, Harrison has a 4.48 ERA and above 3.0 walks-per-nine across 182 innings.

Headlining the deal is outfielder prospect James Tibbs III. The former 2024 first-round pick slots in as Boston’s number six prospect but failed to make MLB’s Top 100 prospect list.

Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow speaks with the media at the Hilton Anatole during the 2024 MLB Winter Meetings.Jerome Miron-Imagn Images

On paper, the return for Devers is underwhelming, and according to The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly, Boston’s initial asking price was much higher with the inclusion of the San Francisco Giants’ top prospect and MLB Pipeline’s #19 prospect, Bryce Eldridge.

“It took nearly four weeks of negotiations to agree on the player package,” Baggarly wrote. “In the early stages, the Red Sox insisted upon 20-year-old first base prospect Bryce Eldridge, but the Giants refused to consider including him in the deal.”

Eldridge is tearing up the minor leagues, already in Triple-A at the age of 20. In 2025, he is slashing .251/.323/.797 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs. His quick ascension would fit in Boston’s timeline alongside top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcello Mayer. And with Triston Casas’ future in doubt, Eldridge would have been an excellent contender as his potential successor at first base.

The Red Sox asking for Eldridge is not shocking, but the fact that Breslow lowered his asking price is. After witnessing Juan Soto net multiple top-100 prospects for the Washington Nationals, Boston could not get one. Admitting that Devers is a ring below Soto among MLB’s elite, it is still head-scratching that Breslow willingly accepted a lower offer, knowing he did not need to trade Devers.

“There was no mandate [to trade Devers],” said Breslow. “The mandate is to assemble the best team that we possibly could. To do that, we needed to create a more functional roster and give certain guys more playing time to be able to rotate through the DH spot. This is a roster that certainly has some needs, and we can talk about starting pitching and bullpen help. We think we addressed some of those in the return that we had in this deal. But additionally, I do think that it gives us some resources as we head toward the Deadline.”

Breslow is not wrong to say they filled some needs, but holding out for the best offer seems like a logical decision – especially when it involves a pillar of the franchise.

Mets’ Frankie Montas has another rough outing in rehab start for Triple-A

Making his sixth rehab start and fourth with Triple-A, right-hander Frankie Montas turned in another disappointing outing in what could possibly be his final start before re-joining the Mets.

Things started off well for Montas who went the first three innings without allowing a run before he was dinged for two in the fourth. He then went back out for the fifth with the game tied at 2-2 and gave up a three-run homer to Troy Johnston to put a crimp in his start.

Montas wasn’t out of the woods yet after a double and wild pitch put a runner on third base with two outs. He retired the final batter of the inning to strand the runner at third, but the damage was already done.

The righty finished his night by going five innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two. He threw 80 pitches (47 strikes).

It was the latest in a string of bad outings for the 32-year-old who entered the night with a 13.17 ERA (2.34 WHIP) in just 13.2 innings. After the start, Montas’ ERA rose slightly to 13.19.

On the bright side, it was the longest start Montas was able to pitch during his rehab with his previous-long being four innings on June 3 when he also allowed five earned runs (on four home runs).

Manager Carlos Mendoza said before Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves that the Mets will need to make a decision on Montas soon.

“Let’s see how he feels after the outing today,” the skipper said. “We wanna see execution, obviously, and then we have a decision. We gotta talk to him, but we’re approaching the deadline where we gotta make a decision on him.”
