Secretary Rollins Announces Bold Plan to Combat New World Screwworm’s Northward Spread

(Edinburg, TX, June 18, 2025) – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins this morning launched an $8.5 million sterile New World screwworm (NWS) fly dispersal facility in South Texas and announced a sweeping five-pronged plan (PDF, 434 KB) to enhance USDA’s already robust ability to detect, control, and eliminate this pest. These urgent actions are necessary to finish the fight against NWS and protect the United States.

On June 14 at approximately 10:15 a.m. PDT (1715 UTC) a series of planned protests organized by Take Action San Diego began in Downtown San Diego, California; Wikinews was there. The protests were part of the larger No Kings protests that occurred in California and other parts of the United States to protest against the administration and policies of President Donald Trump, in response to their perceived authoritarianism.

According to CBS8, citing the San Diego Police Department, an estimated 80,000 people gathered at Waterfront Park in front of the San Diego County Administration Center. Protesters then began marching southbound on Harbor Drive and continued marching south until turning left to march north on Pacific Highway.

Wikinews spoke to multiple protesters.

“We don’t like what Trump’s doing and the fascism that going on and the authoritarianism. You know, so when they said no kings, that’s what America’s all about,” said an elderly couple attending the protest.

“I’m protesting the administration and all of its illegal moves, all of its illegal actions and what the president and his cronies are doing to this country is absolutely illegal, and they are the ones who are the un-Americans,” said a protester when asked why they came.

One protester that was interviewed stated they have been personally affected by the policies of President Donald Trump: “I’m transgender and I kind of like my rights. It was one of the first things that Donald Trump did with his edicts when he tried to become king to say that the federal government doesn’t recognize transgender identity as existing.”

Protesters continued north on Pacific Highway until returning to Waterfront Park via Ash Street. The San Diego protest remained peaceful throughout the day, according to Police Chief Scott Wahl. By 1:30 p.m. PDT (2030 UTC) the majority of the protesters had left.

19-year-old Orioles minor-league shortstop Luis Guevara dies after watercraft crash

Baltimore Orioles minor-league shortstop Luis Guevara died in a watercraft crash on Sunday at 19 years old.

On Wednesday, TMZ reported that Guevara and three other individuals were involved in a head-on collision of two personal watercrafts off the coast of Lido Key near Sarasota, Florida. After they were ejected from the watercrafts, bystanders helped them to shore. The baseball player later died of his injuries.

The authorities are investigating the accident, per TMZ. The Orioles shared the news on Tuesday with a statement from manager Mike Elias, saying, “The Orioles are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of minor league infielder Luis Guevara.

“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time.”

The MLB Players Association also released a statement, which read, “The Players Association is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a member of our fraternity, Orioles minor league player Luis Guevara, at only 19 years old. Our thoughts are with Luis’ family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”

Hailing from Tincao, Venezuela, Guevera signed with Baltimore as an international free agent in January 2023. He played in 30 games in his first season in the U.S., including 24 appearances with Single-A Delmarva, four with the FCL Orioles and two with Chesapeake in the Double-A ranks.

Throughout his minor-league career, Guevara hit .281 with 49 RBI and 91 hits.

Rick Carlisle expects Tyrese Haliburton to be a game-time decision for Pacers in Game 6, will prep for either scenario

Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle wants to make sure all his bases are covered heading into Game 6 of the NBA Finals. With star Tyrese Haliburton expected to be a game-time decision for that contest, Carlisle will have two game plans, one where Haliburton plays and one where he does not.

Carlisle spoke about his strategy during an appearance on “The Fan Morning Show” on Wednesday. When asked whether Haliburton will practice Wednesday, Carlisle opted to give a more general answer about Haliburton’s status.

“He is going to be carefully evaluated over the next 36 hours and will likely be listed as questionable on the injury report and probably will be a game-time decision for Game 6.”

With so much uncertainty surrounding the situation, Carlisle said the Pacers would prepare for both scenarios during their walkthrough Wednesday.

“We have to prepare for two scenarios, one where he plays and one where he does not,” Carlisle said.

Haliburton sustained a right calf injury during the team’s 120-109 loss in Game 5 on Monday. Haliburton was injured in the first quarter of the contest and briefly left the game. He returned to the court and played through the issue, but finished with just four points after going 0-for-6 from the field. It was easily his worst game of the playoffs.

Following the contest, Haliburton said he intends to play in Game 6 on Thursday. “If I can walk, then I want to play,” he told reporters.

He reiterated that sentiment Wednesday, saying he “do everything in my power to play.”

It’s unclear whether he’ll be allowed to do that. Haliburton reportedly needed an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. The Pacers could opt to hold him out of Game 6 depending on the result of that MRI.

If Haliburton is unable to play, it would be quite the blow for the Pacers. Haliburton has averaged 17.9 points, 9.1 assists, 5.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals in the playoffs this season. He’s hit multiple clutch shots to propel the Pacers to victory in tight games.

Rushing Haliburton back to the court could prove to be a costly mistake as well. An ineffective Haliburton could prove to be a liability on both sides of the floor, and the Pacers can’t afford to risk a more significant, long-term injury to their star player.

That puts the Pacers — and Carlisle — in an extremely difficult spot with the season on the line Thursday.

Yankees’ shutout streak reaches 29 innings as team loses fifth straight game amid offensive swoon

Through the first two months of the 2025 MLB season, the New York Yankees had the best offense in the American League. Aaron Judge’s historic start, combined with resurgences from Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham, gave the team a 128 wRC+ through May, easily the highest figure in the AL.

Since the calendar flipped to June, however, the vaunted Yankees offense has been worse than that of the Miami Marlins. New York’s June swoon reached its lowest point Tuesday, when the team suffered its third straight shutout. Following Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the Yankees have lost five consecutive contests.

The team hasn’t scored a run since Saturday, giving them 29 straight scoreless innings.

Despite the losing streak, the Yankees are still in first in the American League East. The team’s lead has shrunk, however, as the surging Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays have both turned things around after slow starts to the season.

It’s tough to blame Judge for the team’s issues in June. While he hasn’t kept up his Bondsian pace from April and May and has seen his strikeout rate jump to 41.3% in June, Judge is still hitting .264/.381/.585 this month. For most players, that slash line would be good enough to garner MVP consideration. Following Judge’s blistering start, it’s considered a slump.

A much bigger portion of the blame should fall on Goldschmidt and Grisham, who have collapsed following their hot starts. Grisham is hitting .200 in 12 June games. Goldschmidt is hitting .170 in 15 games in the month.

For all the hype the torpedo bats caused in April, Anthony Volpe and Cody Bellinger have both seen their offensive numbers drop after banging home runs against the Milwaukee Brewers in the opening series. Both players have posted below-average wRC+ figures in June. Youngster Jasson Dominguez continues to look overmatched at the plate, and Ben Rice’s production hasn’t matched his batted-ball metrics just yet.

That all paints a bleak picture, though there are reasons for hope. Goldschmidt, Bellinger and Rice should all perform better moving forward. Getting Jazz Chisholm and Giancarlo Stanton back from injuries should help as well. In addition to that, the team’s pitching staff has performed well. Both its rotation and bullpen are ranked in the top half of the league in ERA, with the rotation ranking in the top 10.

Even amid the team’s losing streak, the Yankees still sit at 42-30 entering play Wednesday. The team’s .583 winning percentage is second in the American League, trailing only that of the Detroit Tigers.

It’s easy to overreact to small samples in baseball, especially when the Yankees are involved. While the team should pull out of its current offensive tailspin, there are some reasons to be concerned. Judge is arguably the best hitter in the game, but he can’t do it alone. The team’s June struggles are a reminder that relying on one player to carry an entire offense has massive drawbacks. New York would be wise to rectify that if it wants to make another World Series run.
