Kentucky WBB hires former Virginia Tech star Taylor Soule as Program Assistant

Kenny Brooks took a play out of the John Calipari playbook by bringing a former star player of his to serve as a coach under him at a new school. Cal did it with Tyler Ulis at Arkansas, and now, Brooks is doing it with former Virginia Tech star Taylor Soule at Kentucky.

On Monday, it was announced by Brooks that the Kentucky women’s basketball program has hired Soule as a Program Assistant.

The former Hokie was a four-time All-ACC selection who would hear her name called with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft. Unfortunately, her pro career has been put on pause due to injury, but in the meantime, she’s helping out Brooks in Lexington.

“Hey BBN, it’s Taylor Soule,” she began with in the team’s social media release. “I’m super excited to be here. I’ve only been here a couple weeks, but I know y’all are gonna be really excited about the product the women’s team is producing right now. Go Cats.”

As reported late in July on KSR+, Soule has been in and out of the Joe Craft Center helping out as of late. Now, we know she has an official role within the program. She helped Virginia Tech get to its first-ever Final Four. Hopefully, she can do the same thing at Kentucky.

Correa plays 1st game in Houston since trade as Bregman visits for 1st time since joining Red Sox

HOUSTON — Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman were back at Daikin Park on Monday.

But while Correa was making his triumphant return home after the recent blockbuster trade that brought him back to the Houston Astros from the Minnesota Twins, Bregman was in the ballpark for the first time as a visitor after signing with the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Monday is the opener of a three-game series between the teams.

“That adds an extra little bit of what it’s going to mean for our fans,” Houston manager Joe Espada said. “Both players, what they’ve done for this organization, it’s incredible, right? Bregman, he’s one of the best players that ever wore this uniform, and now we get Carlos back, coming in here and (helping) us win the division. It’s going to be electric here.”

Bregman, drafted second overall by the Astros in 2015, spent his first nine seasons in Houston where he helped the team to eight playoff berths, including seven trips to the AL Championship Series, four World Series appearances and two championships. The third baseman was named an All-Star twice in Houston, won a Gold Glove last season and a Silver Slugger Award in 2019 when he came in second in AL MVP voting.

Bregman was asked about the timing of them both returning to Houston on the same day.

“I was shocked at the news during the trade deadline and it was awesome and it looks like he’s fit right back in,” Bregman said. “He’s a great player, a leader, great teammate. It’s always difficult to compete against him because he’s such a good competitor, but we’re gonna give it our best shot today.”

Correa, who waived his no-trade clause to return to Houston, is back after playing for the Twins since 2022. The top pick in the 2012 draft, he spent his first eight seasons with the Astros, pairing with Bregman for many of those years to transform the Astros from league laughingstock to perennial contender. He’s been great in the nine games since the trade and entered Monday batting .405 with 15 hits, including two homers and six RBIs.

He said returning to the team where his career began after being gone for four years is surreal.

“It’s a second chance to come back here and put on this uniform and it’s a chance that I will never take for granted,” he said. “I’m gonna go out there and give it my best every single day I go out there.”

Correa, who has been slowed by injuries in recent years, said he’s feeling rejuvenated since rejoining the Astros and moving to third base after spending his entire career playing shortstop.

“Being at third base I don’t get as tired, so I feel like my legs are a lot fresher,” he said.

Bregman, who spent years playing third base in Houston while Correa was at shortstop, has no doubt that he’ll excel at his new position.

“He’s going to do great over there,” Bregman said. “He’s got an incredible arm. We always used to say if he catches the ball, the guy is out because of how good the arm is and he’s going to make the transition great. He’s a Platinum Glove winner at shortstop, so third base should be pretty easy for him.”

Though Bregman faced the Astros recently in Boston when the Red Sox swept a three-game series, he admitted that Monday would be emotional because of all the memories he made here. He spoke of what stuck out to him the most from his time in Houston.

“I’d say the championships and just seeing how resilient the city is and how it comes together when times are tough,” he said. “And the people are great, my teammates, the coaches, everything, all the memories in the clubhouse, busting our tail trying to find a way to win a baseball game every single day, the everyday grind of it, it was fun for us.”

As for Correa, he’s soaking up every minute of being back with the team. The best part, he said, is reuniting with close friend and second baseman Jose Altuve.

“As soon as I got to Boston, I gave him a big hug and I told him I missed him,” Correa said. “He’s an unbelievable player, but the human side of it, I get to hang out with him after the games, we get to go eat after the games (and) we just talk shop. It’s something that I definitely missed a lot and I get to do it again so I’m not gonna take it for granted.”

Altuve shares his sentiments.

“I’m really excited he’s back,” he said. “I really enjoyed my time playing with him and I’m going to enjoy playing with him again and we’re all excited about him.”

Yankees not yet sure when Aaron Judge will return to outfield

Aaron Judge continues to work towards a return to right field, but the Yankees do not yet know if he will be able to man the position this weekend in St. Louis.

Before Monday’s game, manager Aaron Boone ruled out Judge for the outfield during this week’s series at home against Minnesota.

Ever since Judge hit the injured list last month with a right flexor strain, the team has been optimistic that he would return to the field before long. “Sooner rather than later” continues to be the public messaging.

But privately, the team is genuinely unsure when it might happen. The timing is important because as long as Judge is limited to designated hitter duties, right field is Giancarlo Stanton’s only path to playing time. The reeling Yankees are hardly in a position to sit Stanton, one of their best hitters.

The location of the Yankees’ next series could create extra incentive for Judge to return this weekend.

Right field at Yankee Stadium is relatively small, which is suited to Stanton’s current level of speed and range. Busch Stadium in St. Louis presents far more ground to cover.

Former Met Johan Santana named Team Venezuela’s pitching coach for 2026 World Baseball Classic

Former Met Johan Santana is joining Team Venezuela’s coaching staff as their pitching coach for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Santana, who pitched for the Mets from 2008-2012, is a two-time Cy Young award winner and four-time All-Star. He won both of his Cy Young awards with the Minnesota Twins where he began his career and spent eight seasons.

In his first season in New York, the left-hander led MLB with his 2.53 ERA and led the NL with 34 starts and 234.1 innings pitched. Santana went on to go 46-34 during his career with the Mets and pitched to a 3.18 ERA. He also threw the first no-hitter in franchise history on June 1, 2012 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Now 46 years old, this will be Santana’s first opportunity as a coach for professional players. And although rosters have not been released yet, some possible pitchers that will play for manager Omar Lopez and Team Venezuela include starters Pablo Lopez, Ranger Suarez, Eduardo Rodriguez and Martin Perez, as well as relievers Jose Alvarado, Robert Suarez, Jose Buttó and Brusdar Graterol.

With a lineup that could feature players such as Ronald Acuña Jr., Jose Altuve, Salvador Perez, Eugenio Suarez and more like Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuña, Team Venezuela will likely be a formidable team in the tournament.

It’s About to Get Harder to Read Old Reddit Threads, and You Can Blame AI

With more and more AI showing up in Google searches as of late, I’ve been leaning extra hard on that one magic word that makes the internet work: Reddit. It’s got its problems, but appending “Reddit” to a search is still the surest bet I have of getting an honest opinion from a real person, which is more than I can say for some other platforms. Unfortunately, it seems like the “Reddit” trick is about to get a lot less useful, and once again, you can blame AI for it.

The problem with any live forum is that information comes and goes as people delete old posts and new updates break older parts of the site. There used to be a way to get around this, but going forward, that loophole’s getting closed.

Yes, Reddit is about to start blocking the Internet Archive. The site, run by a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the open internet, is host to the Wayback Machine, a popular way to browse internet pages that are no longer active, or have changed significantly since they first went up. Simply enter a URL in the Machine’s search box, and you’ll be able to browse captures of what that page used to look like, sometimes going as far back as the 1990s.

It’s a useful way to see how a site has changed, or access information that’s supposed to be long gone. In Reddit’s case, you could use it to look at, say, a hotel review that’s since been deleted. Sure, you might feel a bit awkward about reading a post that’s been purposefully taken down, but because deleting all your threads when leaving the service is a common practice, the Wayback Machine is a great way to preserve useful content well into the future, and keep classic memes from becoming lost media.

Unfortunately, while Reddit says it’s not against the Wayback Machine in general, it’s about to stop the Internet Archive from indexing anything but the Reddit homepage, which means the only archives it’ll be able to keep going forward will be lists of what was popular on Reddit on a certain day. Individual subreddits and posts will be blocked.

That’s not totally useless, say if you’re an internet researcher, but it will make all future Reddit threads way more temporary in nature, and will definitely hurt casual web searches down the line. If I review a hotel now, and then delete my thread, users in a month or two won’t be able to easily see it. On the bright side, existing archives shouldn’t be affected by this block, at least unless Reddit asks the Internet Archive to take down existing captures. But as time passes, the lack of Reddit archives is only going to become a bigger issue.

So why is this happening? Basically, Reddit doesn’t like AI companies scraping content from its site, at least without paying for it first.

“Internet Archive provides a service to the open web,” Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt told the Verge, “but we’ve been made aware of instances where AI companies violate platform policies, including ours, and scrape data from the Wayback Machine.”

Essentially, Reddit wants to tightly control which AI companies it works with (it’s sued over this before), and has blocked most of them from crawling its site. However, with some then turning to scraping Reddit pages captured by the Internet Archive instead, the company is now going to crack down on those captures as well. Basically, we’re paying the price for a few bad apples.

Rathschmidt told The Verge that limits on the Internet Archive will start “ramping up” today, although he wasn’t entirely clear about how. I’ve reached out to Reddit for details, but for now, I did double check, and I’m still able to access archives that already exist, so at least Reddit hasn’t gone nuclear yet.

As for any future posts, all might not be lost. The Verge also spoke to Wayback Machine director Mark Graham, who said that the Internet Archive has a “longstanding relationship with Reddit,” and that there are “ongoing discussions about this matter.”

How to Move Mac Apps to Your Menu Bar (and Why You Should)

I live in a small, cramped apartment in a big city. For each item I bring into my house, I feel like I need to throw something out to keep clutter from piling up. In some ways, my battle with my MacBook’s limited screen real estate mirrors my space issues at home. As a tech journalist, installing apps is a daily occurrence for me, which means an overcrowded dock or menu bar.

Luckily, I’ve largely solved my menu bar issues on my Mac, but my dock is still an area of concern. It’s full of apps, and even though I’ve moved it around a few times, it still takes up too much space on my 13-inch laptop screen. It’s gotten so bad that I’ve now switched to automatically hiding the dock (under System Settings > Desktop & Dock). There’s just one problem—I still need to be able to access the apps I was keeping on my dock. Luckily, with some tweaking, it’s easy to move apps from my chaotic dock to my organized menu bar. Here’s how.

Adding any app to the Mac’s menu bar

If an app doesn’t offer a menu bar icon (looking at you, Slack!), then by default, macOS doesn’t let you move it there. That’s where Badgeify comes in. It lets you add any app to the Mac’s menu bar, where these apps will act as they would in the dock. You can click their menu bar icons to open them (or navigate to their active window), or right-click their icons to reveal additional features (when available).

Once you’ve installed Badgeify, you need to give it accessibility permissions, although that’s standard for apps that make changes to the menu bar. The app will then directly open to its settings page, with the General tab selected by default. Click the + button in the Icons section to start adding your favorite apps to your menu bar. The free tier lets you add three apps to the menu bar, but there is a trick you can use to add just one more.

To add more apps to your menu bar, you can alternatively group multiple apps in a folder and add that to the menu bar instead. Clicking the folder icon in the menu bar will show the apps inside it in a drop down menu. Unfortunately, the free tier is only limited to one folder, and that folder can only have up to two apps in it. With the two standard app icons you can add in addition to that folder, that gives you four free menu bar apps in total. The paid version, however, lifts these restrictions.

If you like what you see with the free tier, you can pay $9 to unlock all features on one Mac or $16 to use the app on up to three Macs. This removes the limits on the number of apps and folders you can add to the menu bar, as well as how many apps a folder can have inside it. It also, delightfully, unlocks some customization options.

Among these features, the most useful one for me is the ability to hide an app from the menu bar when it has no notifications. For instance, if you add Messages to the menu bar, you can keep it hidden until someone messages you. This way, if the app’s icon is there, you know you have a message to read. You can find this feature over at Badgeify settings > Advanced.

It also lets you customize how an app’s menu bar icon looks, which is great for me because I prefer monochrome icons in the menu bar. Although, if you’re feeling creative, you can add your own custom app icons instead. This feature is available under Badgeify settings > General. Click the i button next to an app’s name to start customizing it.

There’s also one experimental feature called Application Integration in Badgeify’s Advanced settings page. This only works with browsers at the moment, and makes it so that when you add a browser to the menu bar, you can right-click its icon to reveal a list of all open tabs. This makes it easier to quickly switch to a specific browser tab, which could speed up your workflow.

Overall, though, I love Badgeify, and it’s been well worth the cost for me. I’ve used this app to move Slack, Messages, WhatsApp, and my email client (FMail) to the menu bar, which makes it a lot easier to live without the dock on my screen, meaning I can happily maximize my available screen space.
