Chargers Sign Franchise Legend Keenan Allen

Chargers Sign Franchise Legend Keenan Allen originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that Keenan Allen agreed to a one-year, $8.52 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday evening, bringing the former franchise star back to the team that originally drafted him.

This news follows the surprise retirement of Allen’s former Chargers teammate, Mike Williams, last month. This left the team with a talented receiving corps but lacking a veteran leader. Enter Allen, whose 11 successful NFL seasons will bring valuable experience and leadership to a young pass-catching group.

Allen built his career with the Chargers, but was traded to the Chicago Bears ahead of the 2024 season for a fourth-round pick. This was a painful divorce for fans, but hopefully bringing Allen back for his age-33 season can heal those wounds.

Allen is a historical cornerstone for the franchise, with the second-most receptions and receiving yards in franchise history, trailing only the newly-inducted Hall of Famer Antonio Gates in those categories.

What he’ll do for the team in 2025 is a different question, though. Allen will hopefully aid the development of rookie receivers Keandre Lambert-Smith and Tre’ Harris, but at age 33, expectations for his on-field production are modest compared to the rest of his accomplished career.

Allen had a productive year in a disastrous Bears offense in 2024, but his eight drops on the season were in the 13th percentile among possible receivers, according to PFF. For him to return to being the reliable target Justin Herbert remembers from his early years as the Bolts quarterback, Allen will need to get his hands back to their normally dependable selves.

However, at the end of the day, Allen was a key figure in a frustrating but cherished era of Chargers football, and having him back in powder blue benefits the fans, team, and franchise as a whole.

Hamidou Diallo signs with Spanish pro team Baskonia in Euroleague

Hamidou Diallo is headed to Spain. The former Cat signed a two-year deal with Baskonia, a professional club in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain that competes in the Liga Endesa and Euroleague, the most prestigious league in Europe.

Last season, Diallo played for the Shanxi Loongs in the Chinese Premier League, averaging 22.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. He dropped a career-high 46 points in a game vs. Zhejiang. After playing a season and a half at Kentucky from 2017-18, Diallo was selected No. 45 in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Brooklyn Nets, who traded his rights to the Charlotte Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2019, Diallo won the NBA Slam Dunk contest, memorably jumping over Shaquille O’Neal on one dunk and rapper Quavo for another.

Diallo played with the Thunder for a few more seasons before being traded to the Detroit Pistons in March 2021. He dealt with injuries throughout his time with the Pistons and eventually signed with the Wizards, spending the majority of his time with their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go. In 2024, he made the move to China.

Earlier this summer, Diallo released a video chronicling his life in China, which includes an interesting look at how he balances basketball and his diet while fasting during Ramadan. Fun fact: he is friends with current Cat Mo Dioubate, who also grew up in Queens, NY, and observes Ramadan.

Former Cats playing overseas

Diallo is one of many former Cats who are showcasing their talents abroad. Earlier this week, Ansley Almonorsigned a deal with Vilpas Vikings of the Korisliiga league. After two years in Turkey, Derek Willis is taking his talents to France to play with Paris Basketball. Last month, Alex Poythress extended his deal with Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Kyle Wiljter renewed his deal with Umana Reyer Venezia in Italy.

I’m sure we’ll hear of more deals as training camps start up across Europe this month.

Caleb Williams laughs off viral video of him missing his target into a net

Caleb Williams defended himself after a fan’s video of the Bears quarterback missing his target while throwing into a net went viral. It prompted arm-chair quarterbacks to question Williams’ progress since last season.

“I look at it, and I laugh at ‘em, as always,” Williams said Thursday, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN. “We’re out here working. We’re getting after it. We’re competing, and that’s one of the drills in which we were competing.”

Williams explained that the drill — throwing into a net from close range — is designed to work on a quarterback’s quick delivery. He is supposed to throw the ball into the bottom left corner of the net as quickly as possible without turning the laces.

Williams was shown missing four consecutive throws before yelling and stomping off.

He said his reaction was misconstrued.

“We actually have a rule in own QB room — if you miss the board, you have to do something funny or something like that,” Williams said. “We’ve had some competition in those areas, also. It’s something fun, something competitive. I was competing and I missed it, and it was fake anger that I had, that I showed. That’s what [it is]. You’re competing with your friends and something like that happens you give maybe a little few words that you may say, choice words after losing to your buddies.”

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles also laughed it off, telling Cronin he didn’t know “it was a national crisis of Caleb struggling.”

The No. 1 overall pick in 2024 completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 3,541 yards with 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. The Bears went 5-12 last season and hired Ben Johnson as their head coach this offseason.

Steelers All-Pro kicker Chris Boswell wants new deal

This article originally appeared on SteelersNOW.com.

In addition to defensive tackle Cam Heyward, Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro kicker Chris Boswell is also seeking a new deal, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Boswell is currently the NFL’s eighth-highest paid kicker. He’s currently signed through 2026 with a $5 million average annual value. Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs is the league’s highest-paid kicker with a contract value of $25.6 million/$6.4 AAV.

“Chris Boswell privately has been seeking a new contract from the Steelers,” Schefter wrote on X. “Despite being voted first team All-Pro, Boswell was the AFC North’s lowest-paid kicker last season. Three years ago Boswell signed a contract that tied him with Justin Tucker as the NFL’s highest-paid kicker; but that market also has been reset the past two years.”

Boswell, who was 41 of 44 on field goal attempts in 2024, nearlybroke an NFL single-season record. The record is 44 field goals, set by San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers in 2011.
