Shohei Ohtani returns to leadoff spot for Dodgers, Mookie Betts moves back to No. 2 in lineup

Shohei Ohtani is back in the leadoff spot for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He’ll bat first for the Dodgers in Sunday’s matchup versus the Tampa Bay Rays

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts moved Mookie Betts into the leadoff spot for the past nine games, hoping that would help him break out of his season-long slump. Ohtani batted second while Betts was at the top of the batting order.

Upon making the switch, Roberts insisted this was a temporary move for Betts, intended to help him focus on getting on base and taking good at-bats. The belief was that Ohtani would go back to the top of the lineup when Max Muncy returned from the injured list. That won’t be the case Sunday, but Muncy’s pending return could cause further lineup changes.

Betts didn’t improve during his nine games batting leadoff, compiling a .211/.295/.263 slash line with five walks in 44 plate appearances. He is hitless in his past three games, going 0-for-13 with no walks. For the season, he’s batting .237/.309/.365 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 47 RBI — easily the worst numbers of his 12-year career.

“Just trying to figure out what’s best short term, longer term,” Roberts told reporters before Sunday’s game. “In a vacuum [Saturday], I thought he had a good offensive game. I really did. I thought he had good at-bats, I thought he spread the ball out. And then other days, it looks like he’s lost. I know he’s frustrated.”

Meanwhile, Ohtani wasn’t thriving in the No. 2 spot either, despite hitting there the most during his eight MLB seasons. In nine games, he batted .243/.349/.595 with four home runs and nine RBI. Leading off, Ohtani was putting up MVP-caliber numbers, batting .274/.378/.605 with 34 homers, 64 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 456 PAs. Overall, he leads the National League with 38 home runs.

What doesn’t appear to be a consideration is moving Betts from shortstop back to second base or right field. He’s played good defense, according to advanced metrics, credited with six Defensive Runs Saved and two Outs Above Average. But is that affecting his performance at the plate? The Dodgers have others who could play the position with Tommy Edman, Miguel Rojas and Hyeseong Kim.

Elsewhere on the Dodgers’ roster, reliever Kirby Yates was placed on the injured list with lower back pain. Roberts told reporters that Yates was struggling with a pelvic issue and was sent back to Los Angeles for further testing.

Yates, 38, has a 4.31 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings. But as Roberts pointed out, he’s had difficulty throwing his splitter effectively.

The Dodgers added relievers Brock Stewart and Paul Gervase at the MLB trade deadline, while Blake Treinen was activated from the IL last week.

On Saturday, in Manhattan, miles of roadway were blocked off from car and vehicle traffic for Summer Streets, an annual program by the New York City Department of Transportation. Starting July 26, and running each Saturday through the end of August, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time (11:00–19:00 UTC), select roads were closed to cars for the city’s annual Summer Streets program, with a continuous route stretching across Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge up to Inwood included for the first time, according to NBC New York.

Summer Streets will return along the same path on August 9 and 16, and to two small routes in Brooklyn and the Bronx on August 23, the outlet reported.

People gathered throughout the day along parts of the route where programming was set up. At intervals along the trail were side streets also devoid of cars, each having something to do to encourage residents to socialize and hang out. Some had stages with live music and performances, and many others had arts and crafts tables. Some places along the route had water bottle refilling stations.

On 144th St., in Hamilton Heights, a local banquet hall set up a softball batting cage for participants to try. In Mitchel Square Park on 167th St., a Brooklyn game store offered a Settlers of Catan board game setup. At the northern end of the path, in Anne Loftus Playground, part of Fort Tryon Park, bands with HONK NYC performed while children played in the wading pool.

New Yorkers cycled, ran, rollerbladed, and used scooters along parts of the route. The temperature stayed in the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 24°C) with light winds and partly sunny skies.

Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 21 – Jacob Wiley (2017)

The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the “New Jersey Americans”.

Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today.

To commemorate the players who played for the Nets over the decades wearing those 52 different jersey numbers, Nets Wire is covering the entire history of the franchise’s jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. The 22nd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 21, which has has had a total of 26 players wear the number in the history of the team.

The 21st of those players wearing No. 21 played in the Brooklyn Nets era, forward alum Jacob Wiley. After ending his college career at Eastern Washington, Wiley would go unselected in the 2017 NBA Draft, instead signing with the Nets.

His stay with the team would span just five games before he’d be cut by the team, his last time playing in the NBA.

During his time suiting up for the Nets, Wiley wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 2.2 rebounds per game.

Paul Finebaum Names Prominent SEC Coach Heading Into a ‘Big Year’

Paul Finebaum Names Prominent SEC Coach Heading Into a ‘Big Year’ originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The 2025 college football offseason featured several major storylines. One of the most notable occurred in the spring when Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Nico Iamaleava unexpectedly announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.

The announcement came on the same day as the spring game, which left the Volunteers with little time to find a replacement. Last season, Iamaleava threw for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdown passes and five interceptions, playing a vital role in leading the team to the playoffs for the first time.

On “The Paul Finebaum Show,” the SEC Network analyst expressed that he believes this year is crucial for Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel after last season’s College Football Playoff appearance.

“I think Heupel is in a good spot, but this is a big year for him to show what he’s capable of,” Finebaum said. “Last year was OK, but it was a really terrible ending to the season.”

Finebaum mentioned that the Iamaleava situation continues to affect some people, and many are eager to commend Tennessee for its approach. However, he believes that Tennessee should not be held responsible for what transpired, as Iamaleava chose to leave on his own; the Volunteers did not instruct him to go.

Iamaleava, who transferred to the UCLA Bruins, will be replaced by Joey Aguilar. Aguilar, who originally was headed to UCLA before changing course to Tennessee, has impressive statistics, having passed for 6,760 yards, 56 touchdowns and 24 interceptions while completing 60.1% of his attempts in two seasons with the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Additionally, he rushed for 452 yards and five touchdowns.

Finebaum has previously stated that he believes a 9-3 record is realistic for Tennessee this season. However, given the manageable schedule, he suggested that in a worst-case scenario, the Volunteers could finish the 2025 season with an 8-4 record. Additionally, Kyle Wood from Athlon Sports has ranked Tennessee’s schedule as the third easiest in the conference.

Wood emphasized that September will be a crucial month for the Volunteers. They will start the season with a neutral-site game against the Syracuse Orange in Atlanta, followed by a home game against the Georgia Bulldogs two weeks later. After these matchups, Tennessee’s toughest games will be spread more evenly throughout the remainder of the season.

The Volunteers will begin their season at noon ET Aug. 30 against Syracuse.
