The New York Mets and Yankees will play each other in a series starting on September 11th for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Every team will be in action on the 4th of July to celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday. The All-Star game will be in Philadelphia on July 14th. These are just a few of the many notable dates on the 2026 MLB schedule. He chats about breaking the record for most consecutive games played, what he thinks about current players not playing all 162 games, his transition after baseball and more!

Next, the guys chat through some notable news. The new Women’s Professional Baseball League held tryouts recently, finishing up with their final day of tryouts at Nationals Park on August 25th. Over 600 women from 10 countries showed up to try out! Jake and Jordan talk about the impact this is having on the sport and where they hope to see this grow. Plus, the Mets call up a top pitching prospect to start Friday, Junior Caminero continues to impress at just 22-years-old and Garrett Crochet continues to make a case for the AL Cy Young.

Finally, the biggest news of the day, on Tuesday, didn’t come from the baseball world, but it did come from the sports world as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift announced they are engaged. Jake and Jordan discuss who are the biggest celebrity couples involving an athlete. Are Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift bigger than Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe? Where might David and Victoria Beckham land in this debate?

Mets are calling up their No. 4 prospect to make MLB debut on Friday

The New York Mets are calling up pitcher Jonah Tong, their No. 4 prospect and No. 44 overall, who leads the minor leagues in strikeouts and earned-run average.

The 22-year-old right-hander will make a start Friday against the Miami Marlins, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. Tong will join a team that finds itself in the middle of a playoff race. The Mets are behind the Philadelphia Phillies by five games in the National League East and hold a 3œ game lead for the last wild-card spot.

“This went fast for Jonah,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said during a news conference Tuesday. “But to his credit, he really conquered everything we put in front of him. He exceeded our expectations throughout this year, and he put himself in a position where he deserved to be considered for a day like this.”

The Mets’ seventh-round draft pick in 2022 opened the season in double-A Binghamton, where he made 20 starts. Tong struck out 162 batters and led the league with a 1.59 ERA when he was promoted to triple-A Syracuse in earlier this month.

Tong will make a start with the big league team after pitching 11.2 innings in Syracuse without giving up a run while striking out 17.

The Mets are in the middle of a season-long 16 games in a 16-day stretch and the front office wanted to have a sixth starter to give its starting pitchers an extra day of rest.

“He earned it, man. He earned it,” Mendoza told reporters. “I’m excited. We are all excited.”

Tong and the Mets will face Eury Pérez and the Marlins on Friday at 4:10 p.m. PDT at Citi Field.

Google’s Browser-Based Video Editor Is Now Available for Free

Google Vids is the company’s web-based video editor, and you can now use it for free. Up until now, Vids was available only for paying Google Workspace subscribers, but this move makes it accessible to everyone. The pitch here is quite simple: Vids is a simple video editing tool that integrates extremely well with Google Drive. You can use basic editing tools and templates for free, and if you’re a paying Google subscriber, then you can use its AI features, too.

Before you get too excited about Google Vids, though, you should know that it’s not a replacement for professional editing software. It’s more intended as a good place to get started, a bit like what Windows Movie Maker used to be about 15 years ago. You can do a lot with Google Vids, but if you’re a professional, you’ll hit the limits of the app’s capabilities fairly quickly. The good news is that there are alternatives like DaVinci Resolve for those who want professional-grade editing software and don’t need to do their editing in a browser. But if that’s a bit overkill for your needs, Google Vids is still worth looking into, especially because of the new free tier.

Google Vids now has a generous free tier

The year in review template in Google Vids.

Over the years, I’ve learned to lower my expectations for web-based video editing tools, but Google Vids is quite decent. My favorite thing about it is that if you have no idea how you want to present a video, it has several built-in templates to help you get started. For instance, there’s a template that lets you create a “year in review” style video. Within each template, you can insert premade scenes alongside your own footage. For instance, a sourdough prep template I found had premade scenes showing an ingredient list (with text you can swap out for your own recipe), someone prepping dough, someone making dough, and so on.

You also have the option of importing a presentation from Google Slides and converting it into a video. It’s a great use of the app’s integration with Google Drive, and even better, you can also easily import pictures from your Google Photos account if you need still shots. There’s even a handy feature that lets you search stock photo/video websites to get filler footage.

The tools available for basic edits are also quite intuitive. Even as a novice, I was able to easily add basic animations for text or transition effects, and modify on-screen elements like the background. Google Vids also lets you easily search for royalty-free music to add to your videos, which is a nice touch. The best bit is that you can use Google Vids via any browser, not just Chrome.

You can pay for AI integration

If you are a paying Google Workspace subscriber, then you can also use AI features in Google Vids. The basic editing tools remain the same, and all the AI stuff basically revolves around using a text prompt to generate ideas or videos. For instance, you can use a text prompt to generate a rough storyboard, or just ask Gemini to look at a Google Docs file to generate it even without a prompt. Vids also lets you throw in a script and generate an AI voiceover for your videos, and you have the option to choose from multiple types of voices.

Using Veo 3, you can also now make eight-second video clips from a text prompt, or convert still photos into video using AI. If that’s not enough, you could also input your entire script, and Vids will generate an AI avatar to read it out loud for you, with no restriction on time, over your other footage. I’ll presume Google has done its due diligence to not base any of these avatars on actual people—you can see a few avatar choices above—but still, it does mean that some of the talking heads you’re about to see online won’t resemble the person making the video at all. Be careful with what you assume is real.

These MacBook-Style PC Laptops Are on Sale for Labor Day

Labor Day sales are rolling in, and Lifehacker is sharing the best sales based on product reviews, comparisons, and price-tracking tools before they’re over. You can also subscribe to our shopping newsletter, Add to Cart, for the best sales sent to your inbox.

I grew up on PC, but I get it. Sometimes, there’s nothing like a MacBook. Easy to carry and classy but nondescript, it’s just what a computer is supposed to look like to a lot of people. Luckily, PC makers have caught on to that too, and if you prefer Windows but want to see what all the hubbub is with Apple’s form factor, there are plenty of laptops that try to give you the best of both worlds. And with Labor Day sales, now’s a good time to grab one.

There are two big contenders in the PC MacBook-like game. Predictably, one of them is Microsoft itself. The company’s Surface Laptop lineup does a great job maintaining Apple’s thin and light appeal, while actually starting off a little cheaper. The Surface Laptop also has, if you couldn’t tell from the name, a touchscreen—something that Apple doesn’t. And while its Qualcomm-made ARM chips aren’t quite as powerful as Apple’s in-house M-series ARM chips, they do present a similarly efficient battery life. All-in-all, this is probably the closest you’re going to get to Apple as far Windows MacBook-likes go, and you can currently get the starting configurations of both the 13.8-inch and 15-inch models on sale. Upgrade models for both also have sales, if you’re feeling a bit spendy, and the 512GB version of the 13-inch model is currently discounted at Best Buy to match that model’s starting configuration as well (be sure to navigate to it before checking out).

There is a reason to go with another company, though. Probably the biggest downside to Microsoft’s laptops is that their ARM chips, while battery efficient, can sometimes run into compatibility issues with Windows programs expecting a different architecture. It’s all a little technical, but that’s where Dell’s computers come in handy. Currently available starting for as low as $350, these run on more traditional AMD or Intel chips, which are able to run most apps without issue (assuming your specific configuration is powerful enough for them). You can also find unique form factors here, like laptops that can convert into tablets, which aren’t available through Microsoft. There are a lot of options to pick from on Dell’s website, but my favorite is probably the Dell 16 Plus, which currently starts at $750. That model will snag you a large 16-inch screen, an above average Intel Core Ultra 7 chip, a respectable 16GB of memory, and a generous 1TB of storage. Unless you see yourself wanting a dedicated graphics card for gaming (I wrote about another great deal from Dell if you do), that’s a great loadout for almost anyone. Or, you could spend an extra $150 to get the same laptop, but with 32GB of memory instead.

Watch Turkiye’s Sehmus Hazer put Kristaps Porzingis in poster during Turkiye’s opening game win

EuroBasket tipped off on Wednesday with games across the continent, but being at home did not help Latvia in its opener, as it fell to Turkiye 93-73.

It wasn’t a good day for the Hawks’ Kristaps Porzingis, who shot 3-of-12 from the floor and ended up in a poster at the hands of Sehmus Hazer.

Hazer plays for Turkish power Anadolu Efes and played three games at the 2021 NBA Summer League for the Cavaliers.

Alperen Sungun had an impressive opening game with 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, leading a Turkiye team that looked like a real threat in this tournament.

NBA veteran Cedi Osman, who now plays for Panathinaikos in Greece, led Turkiye with 20 points, while former Maverick, Knick, Net and Celtic Shane Larkin added 15. The simple difference in this game: Turkiye shot 60% from the floor while Latvia shot 38.7%.

Dawn Staley says she would have taken Knicks’ coaching job if offered

Dawn Staley was ready to be the head coach of the New York Knicks.

In an interview with Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston on their “Post Moves” podcast, the South Carolina women’s basketball head coach confirmed she had a formal interview for the Knicks’ head coach vacancy earlier this summer and was interested in the position.

“If the Knicks would have offered me the job, I would have had to do it,” Staley said. “It’s not just for me, it’s for women, for
to break open that. It’s the New York Knicks, and I’m from Philly, but it’s the freakin’ New York Knicks.”

League sources told The Athletic that while Staley impressed during her conversation with team president Leon Rose and other members of the Knicks’ front office, she was not considered a finalist to fill the vacancy left when the team fired head coach Tom Thibodeau following the franchise’s first trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 25 years. The franchise hired Mike Brown, formerly the Sacramento Kings’ head coach, to replace Thibodeau.

During the conversation with Parker and Boston, Staley said she went into the interview with the Knicks’ brass with a series of questions of her own, primarily centered around the potential impact of hiring the first woman head coach in NBA history.

“Would I take any NBA job? No,” Staley said. “I will say this: The NBA has to be ready for a female head coach. You can’t just interview somebody and say, ‘We’re going to hire her.’ I probably lost the job by asking this question.”

“Well, I had a series of questions that I asked them,” she continued. “No. 1 was: Why was I in the candidate pool? I said, ‘Has the New York Knicks organization, in its history, ever had what you’re looking for? They wanted a team. They wanted inclusiveness with management, coaches and everyone. They wanted it to feel like a closely-knit franchise. The answer was really ‘no.’ If you don’t hire anyone different, how are you going to get that? That was No. 1.

“My other question was, ‘If you hired me as the first female coach, how would it impact your daily job?’ Because it would. It would. You’re going to get questions that you don’t have to be asked if you hire a male coach. There’s going to be the media, all this stuff you’ll have to deal with that you didn’t have to deal with and don’t have to deal with when you hire a male. That got them to thinking. That really got them to thinking. ‘Maybe she’s right.’ I felt the energy change after that.”

Staley signed a new contract with South Carolina in January that makes her the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball. The deal, which extends through the 2029-30 season, totals more than $25 million after signing bonuses and annual increases.

Staley’s interview was part of an unorthodox Knicks’ coaching search that ended with Brown’s hiring. Team decision-makers reached out to multiple NBA teams to inquire about their head coaches under contract, like Houston’s Ime Udoka, Dallas’ Jason Kidd and Chicago’s Billy Donovan. The Knicks also interviewed NBA assistant coaches like Minnesota’s Micah Nori and New Orleans’ James Borrego, as well as recently-fired head coaches like Taylor Jenkins and Brown.

More women than ever are joining NBA coaching staffs in high-ranking roles, but no woman has ever been the head coach of an NBA team.

In 2019, the Knicks, under a previous regime, hired Lisa Willis, a former WNBA player, as an assistant coach for their G League affiliate.

There are currently three women who serve as NBA assistant coaches: Jenny Boucek (Indiana Pacers), Brittni Dolandson (Atlanta Hawks) and Lindsey Harding (Los Angeles Lakers). In 2024, Harding, then the head coach of the Stockton Kings, became the first woman to be named coach of the year in the G League. Harding was the first woman to be the head coach of a G League team, and she worked under Anjali Ranadivé, the first female general manager in G League history.

Huascar Brazoban being replaced on Mets’ active roster by Kevin Herget

Mets reliever Huascar Brazoban has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Kevin Herget was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to replace Brazoban on the roster.

Brazoban had an MRI for a side issue before being sent down, manager Carlos Mendoza said before Wednesday’s game against the Phillies at Citi Field.

The right-hander has spent a chunk of the season in the minors, and his results at the big league level have been mixed.

He has a 3.91 ERA (4.12 FIP) and 1.32 WHIP in 43.0 innings across 46 appearances.

Brazoban struggled during his inning on Tuesday against the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits.

Herget has pitched 4.1 innings over two games for the Mets this season, allowing two runs (one earned) while walking none and striking out one.
