Luka Doncic diagnosed with left knee contusion, will continue to play for Slovenia at EuroBasket

This looked like it could have been much worse in the moment, with Luka Doncic’s Slovenian teammate Gregor Hrovat falling and crashing into his knee during an exhibition game against Latvia.

While Doncic limped back to the locker room after this, he was diagnosed with just a knee contusion, reports Marc Stein. Doncic will return to practice with the Slovenian team on Monday as they gear up for the start of EuroBasket at the end of the month, adds Dan Woike of The Athletic.

With Doncic, Slovenia has a chance to medal at the European championships (they are sixth in betting odds to win the entire thing, according to Bet MGM). He is the heart and soul of their team, as evidenced by his 26 points, five rebounds and five assists against Latvia in the first half. With Doncic out, Latvia went on an 18-0 run and went on to win the exhibition, behind 20 points from Kristaps Porzingis and 16 from Davis Bertans.

Miami re-signs guard Dru Smith, who is coming off a torn Achilles

Dru Smith’s perseverance has won him a lot of fans in the Miami Heat front office. The Heat liked him enough that right as the 2023-24 season was starting, they converted his two-way contract to a regular one, but then he ended up missing most of that season with a right knee injury (and was waived at the trade deadline). Smith bounced back and signed another two-way contract with the Heat for last season and in 14 games with the big club averaged 6.2 points a game off the bench as a sniper from 3 and strong on-ball defender, then in December he tore his Achilles and missed the remainder of last season.

Miami is bringing Smith back for this season and hoping he stays healthy.

This was announced as a three-year contract by ESPN’s Shams Charania, but only the first year is fully guaranteed. All three years are at the league minimum.

Smith’s recovery is reportedly going so well that there is optimism he will be ready for the start of the NBA season. Smith is going to have to earn rotation minutes on a team that is expected to start Tyler Herro and Norman Powell at the guard spots, with Terry Rozier and just-drafted Kasparas Jakucionis in the rotation behind them.

Smith is Miami’s 14th contract. It’s interesting that after the reports of reserve big men working out for the team recently — Kai Jones and Trey Lyles — and now will enter the season with just Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware as centers on the roster.

Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer to undergo season-ending wrist surgery, manager Alex Cora announces

Boston Red Sox rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer will undergo wrist surgery that will end his 2025 season, manager Alex Cora announced on Sunday.

Mayer, 22, will be sidelined for three months following the surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training, according to Cora.

The rookie had been on the injured list since July 25 with a sprained right wrist. He sustained the injury while swinging and missing at a slider in a July 23 game versus the Philadelphia Phillies and pitcher Jesús Luzardo.

Mayer received an anti-inflammation injection for the injury Aug. 2, hoping that would lead to a quicker return. However, the treatment didn’t work as quickly as the Red Sox hoped and Mayer wasn’t able to resume baseball activities. He previously injured the same area of his wrist in 2022, according to MLB.com.

Surgery was viewed as inevitable, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported. But the Red Sox hoped the injury could be managed to the point where Mayer could play if he could tolerate the pain.

His rookie season ends with a .228/.272/.402 slash average with eight doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI. Mayer should narrowly maintain his rookie status for 2026, registering fewer than the 130 at-bats or 45 days on the active roster (excluding time on the IL) that MLB rules require. He had 127 at-bats for the season, spending 44 days on the Red Sox’s roster before going on the IL.

Mayer was called up on May 25 after Alex Bregman went on the IL with a right quad strain. The Red Sox’s 2021 first-round pick (No. 4 overall) is a natural shortstop. However, he mostly played third base and some second base in Boston, making a couple of appearances at his regular position in the 44 games he played.

At 68-56 going into Sunday’s MLB schedule, the Red Sox hold second place in the AL East, five games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and 1.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees. Boston and the Seattle Mariners currently hold the top two AL wild-card playoff spots, with the Yankees holding the third.

Dodgers take sole lead of the NL West after strong 6-0 showing against Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reigning solo at the top of the NL West once again after a 6-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday. The shutout put the Dodgers at a 70-53 record, with the team moving just in front of the 69-54 Padres with the win at Dodger Stadium.

The win came on the back of a solid night from Teoscar Hernández, who had a homer and an RBI sacrifice fly. On the mound, Blake Snell threw six shutout innings for the Dodgers, notching 62 strikes on 96 pitches and allowing five hits.

It didn’t take long for the Dodgers to get on the board, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Hernández began with a sacrifice fly that sent Shohei Ohtani home, before Michael Conforto hit a two-run RBI single.

Freddie Freeman added to that in the second inning, adding two more runs on a fielding error. In the fifth inning, a solo homer from Hernández — his 20th this season— brought L.A. to 6-0.

Padres starter Dylan Cease had a tough start to the game, allowing six walks in the first two innings and letting the Dodgers run up a 5-0 lead. He also ended with three errors, and only threw two strikes. Cease was taken out in the fourth inning after racking up 85 pitches, following Ohtani’s first hit of the game.

After a 3-2 win over the Padres on Friday that ended a four-game losing streak, the Dodgers officially lock up a series win. The two teams will play again on Sunday to finish the three-game series, with Yu Darvish set to start for San Diego and Tyler Glasnow set to take the mound for L.A.

But it won’t be long until they meet again: The Dodgers and Padres are set to play another three-game series in San Diego next weekend.
