Tigers stem historic free fall with AL Central-tying win over Guardians: What’s next for MLB’s wildest division race?

When remembering this week’s three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, the Detroit Tigers will at least be able to say “It could have been worse.”

The Tigers defeated the Guardians 4-2 on Thursday to salvage the series and stem a free fall that has seen them go from runaway leaders of the AL Central to desperately trying to hold onto a playoff spot. The win moves Detroit back into a tie atop the division with the Guardians, who hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

If the Guardians manage to win the division, they will have completed the largest such comeback in the history of baseball. The current record-holder for largest division or league deficit overcome is the 1914 Boston Braves, who erased a 15-game deficit to win the American League.

The Tigers had previously lost 11 of their past 12 games, while the Guardians had won 17 of 19 in one of the most unlikely reversals baseball has ever seen. It took many hands to get that win.

Jahmai Jones and Wenceel Pérez both homered in the first inning to spot their team an early lead, followed by an RBI single from Javier Báez in the second inning and another homer from Riley Greene in the fourth inning.

On the other side of the ball, Tigers starting pitcher Troy Melton lasted only 3 2/3 innings, with the bullpen coming in for more than five innings of one-run ball.

Had the Tigers lost Thursday, they would have been effectively three games back and needed both a sweep this weekend and the Guardians to get swept this weekend. They now have a little breathing room, though it’s still a position no one could have imagined for them when they held the best record in baseball in July.

The Guardians already had the tiebreaker clinched by Thursday. They entered this series needing only one win to secure the season series against Detroit and got it with a 5-2 win in the opener on Tuesday.

While tied division races used to go to a Game 163 at the end of the season, MLB did away with those in 2022 when it expanded the playoff field to 12 teams. If the Tigers and Guardians are tied at the end of the season, Cleveland will win the Central, meaning Detroit is still essentially one game back from a division title.

After the red-hot Guardians, the Tigers will end their season against another likely playoff team in the Boston Red Sox this weekend.

The Red Sox currently hold the second wild-card spot and will still likely be playing to maintain their playoff standing. They are currently on track to face either the New York Yankees or Toronto Blue Jays — whoever loses the division — in the wild-card round and would get the winner of the Guardians-Tigers race if they fall to the third spot.

The Tigers swept the Red Sox in May, meaning a single Detroit win would secure the tiebreaker. These will both be teams with something to play for.

Unlike the Tigers, the Guardians are getting as friendly a season finale as they come.

The Texas Rangers were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday and have lost eight straight. In addition to having nothing to play for, their top five players by Baseball Reference’s version of WAR — Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford, Nathan Eovaldi, Marcus Semien and Josh Smith — have all been shut down for the season.

Cleveland won’t even get Texas’ top remaining pitcher in Jacob deGrom, as the two-time Cy Young winner pitched Wednesday. Instead, the Rangers are on track to start Jack Leiter, Merrill Kelly and Patrick Corbin.

Despite the loss Thursday, Cleveland is still well-positioned to finish off its historic comeback. The beauty of baseball is that no one should bet on it being that easy.

Is Seahawks’ Jaxon Smith-Njigba injured? Star WR anonymous early on TNF

The Seattle Seahawks are facing division rivals the Arizona Cardinals, with Mike MacDonald’s team looking to move to 3-1 on the season.

A big part of their offense has been Jaxon Smith-Njigba through three weeks, as No. 11 has posted 323 yards and a touchdown from 22 receptions, so it would be easy to think that he would have a big role to play on Thursday Night Football, right?

Well, not exactly.

In the first quarter, Smith-Njigba wasn’t targeted once on Sam Darnold’s six attempts, with Jaxon being a non-factor in the passing game. Plus, he only had a two-yard rush in the first quarter, as the Cardinals’ defense did a great job of taking Darnold’s top weapon away.

Given that Smith-Njigba had posted at least five receptions and 96 yards per game through the first three weeks, not having a catch in the first quarter is a little odd.

Smith-Njigba crucial to Seahawks’ offense

Taking over from DK Metcalf, who is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith-Njigba has been in blistering early-season form, posting yards totals of 124, 103, and 96 yards before his goose egg in the first quarter against the Cardinals.

We imagine that Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak will want to get his top weapon involved far more than he was in the first quarter.

If the Seahawks are to move to 3-1 on the season, then Smith-Njigba is going to have to have a big say in proceedings, and we expect Darnold to look his way, and often as the game goes on.

JJ Redick says LeBron James is ‘in a great spot mentally’; Rob Pelinka allowing James to ‘choose his story’

A question was posed to Rob Pelinka and JJ Redick Thursday during Los Angeles Lakers media day that said the quiet part out loud.

The reporter asked if Pelinka and Redick have had conversations with LeBron James about, in the reporter’s words, “the transition that we are seeing take place from this kind of going from LeBron’s team to Luka [Dončić]’s team.”

Pelinka, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations and general manager, turned to Redick, his newly-extended head coach, and Redick stepped up to answer the question that arrived about 16 minutes into the news conference.

“I’ve talked to LeBron fairly frequently and had two great in-person meetings with him,” Redick said.

“One, he finally made it out to The Hamptons, so he and I had dinner in Sag Harbor right around free agency, and then I was able to spend some time with him here in LA a couple of weeks ago. And I came away from that thinking that he’s in a great spot mentally, and I know he’s going to give us his absolute best.”

Redick and James co-hosted the “Mind the Game” podcast before Redick was hired as his head coach last June. In their first year together on the Lakers — Redick coaching at 40 years old, and James playing at 40 years old — Los Angeles went 50-32 and secured the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference before falling in five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves during the first round of the playoffs.

But in early February, the Lakers pulled off one of the most surprising trades in sports history, acquiring Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks. Then, in August, the Lakers signed the 26-year-old Dončić to a three-year, $165 million max extension.

Meanwhile, according to an ESPN report from July 11, the Lakers didn’t offer James an extension or give him a heads-up about the sale of the franchise from the Buss family to Mark Walter, whereas Dončić reportedly was clued in about the transaction.

Although James picked up his $52.6 million player option in June, the four-time NBA MVP’s future with the Lakers has remained a hot topic this offseason.

Pelinka was asked earlier in Thursday’s news conference how James being in contract year affects the Lakers’ team-building process.

“The first thing we want to do in terms of LeBron and his future is just give him absolute respect to choose his story with his family in terms of how many years he’s going to continue to play,” Pelinka said.

“He’s earned that right, and he’s the best one to talk about that in terms of how many years he’d like to play. But we were very intentional this summer in terms of the pieces we added with Luka and LeBron — once LeBron opted in — making sure that they had the necessary pieces around them to be on a really competitive, strong team. And we built into that and for that.”

A follow-up question was directed Pelinka’s way, inquiring for the GM’s feelings about the possibility of James wanting to play for the Lakers beyond the 2025-26 campaign.

“We would love if LeBron’s story would be to retire as a Laker,” Pelinka said, doubling down on his Aug. 2 comments

“That’d be a positive story.”

Iowa Colony (TX) stunning Richmond Randle (TX) 21-14 in 2nd quarter: Live updates, score of Thursday night showdown between undefeated teams
originally appeared on The Sporting News

So far this season, Richmond Randle has been one of the more impressive teams in Texas.

Fresh off of winning a state title last season in just their third year of varsity football, the Lions haven’t missed a beat, going 4-0 and  have moved up to No. 2 in the latest edition of The Sporting News Top 25 Texas rankings. Last week, they rolled past a solid Fort Bend Marshall squad, 51-6, in their opening game of District 9-5A Division II action.

But Thursday, the Lions face another undefeated squad in Iowa Colony. Like Randle, the Pioneers also come in at 4-0, having defeated Baytown Lee, 57-0, in their District 9-5A Division II opener.

Both teams also feature stellar offensive standouts. Iowa Colony quarterback Carson White has thrown for 617 yards and 14 TDs while adding more than 200 yards rushing and four TDs. Randle is led by junior tailback Landen Williams-Callis, who has 863 yards and 14 TDs.

SECOND QUARTER

TOUCHDOWN RANDLE. Lions take advantage of the special teams miscue, as Landen Williams-Callis finds the end zone from 5 yards out, his second score on the night. We now have a ballgame, folks. (Iowa Colony, 21-14 | 7:22, 2nd)

– Iowa Colony forced to punt near its 30, but the SNAP IS HIGH, and the punter has to fall on it near his 5. A great opportunity for Randle here.

TOUCHDOWN RANDLE. Lions finally break through and Landen Williams-Callis gets a bit of redemption by bulling his way into the end zone for a short TD run. (Iowa Colony, 21-7 | 10:36, 2nd)

– Randle forces a punt and the Lions are finally on the move, as they are down near the Iowa Colony 10.

– Iowa Colony takes its 21-point lead into the second quarter.

FIRST QUARTER

TOUCHDOWN IOWA COLONY. Wow, what a start for the Pioneers. Three Randle fumbles turn into three Pioneer TDs. Carson White hooks up for a 28-yard strike to a streaking Jayden Warren, and it’s a three-TD lead for Iowa Colony. (Iowa Colony, 21-0 | 4:05, 1st)

– Holy mackerel, Randle fumbles the ball again, this time on the ensuing kickoff, and Iowa Colony recovers the ball at midfield. Three turnovers already for the Lions.

TOUCHDOWN IOWA COLONY. Two fumbles turn into two TDs for the Pioneers. The latest was a 5-yard keeper into the end zone from QB Carson White. Iowa Colony is stunning the defending state champs so far. (Iowa Colony, 14-0 | 6:18, 1st)

– Iowa Colony on the move again, as Aaron Tenner breaks off another long run and the Pioneers are near the red zone.

– Landen Williams-Callis fumbles the ball again, and Iowa Colony recovers again, the second time this has happened, less than four minutes into the game.

TOUCHDOWN IOWA COLONY. Pioneers cash in on the takeaway, as QB Carson White connects with Ian Hill in the end zone from 25 yards out. PAT is good. Another key play in the drive was Aaron Tenner’s 23-yard run. (Iowa Colony, 7-0 | 8:37, 1st)

– Randle standout tailback Landen Williams-Callis breaks off a huge run into Iowa Colony territory, but he fumbles the ball, and the Pioneers make the recovery.

– Iowa Colony wins the toss and defers to the second half, so Randle will have the ball to start things off.

PREGAME

– Live from Rosenberg, it’s a battle of two 4-0 teams as Iowa Colony gets set to take on Richmond Randle.

Robert Lewandowski reveals how Barcelona turned it around against Real Oviedo

Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to score as Barcelona beat Real Oviedo 3-1 on Thursday night in La Liga and spoke to the media after the game.

The veteran striker admitted his team had struggled in front of goal early on but says they managed to turn the game around by speeding up the play after the break.

“We know Oviedo has a good football, and I like the way they play. In the first half, we struggled to finish. In the second, we started to play a little faster and were patient. In the end, three goals and a very important victory,” he told the media.

“I had an injury at the end of preseason. It was a little more difficult, and I needed more time to get back into my playing rhythm. I’m patient; there’s no rush. The season is long, and there are a lot of games.

“For me, it’s important to keep playing and keep scoring goals. I feel physically very good. For the team, it’s important that when we have all the players back without injuries, we’re stronger.”

Lewandowski’s header put Barcelona 2-1 up in the match and was his third in La Liga so far from four appearance in 2025-26.

Three Very Specific Predictions for LSU vs. Ole Miss

The LSU Tigers enter the SEC gauntlet as they visit Oxford. Ole Miss will be no easy match up and Brian Kelly vs. Lane Kiffin is sure to deliver fireworks.

From third down efficacy, player props, team defense/offense numbers, team totals and more, we will have a little bit of everything as we roll on this season. What will this week bring?

Last season we ended with a negative record for the first time, but still ended up positive because of some big swings we took odds wise (2022: 19-17, 2023: 19-17, 2024: 16-20) and we hope to do better this time around. We hope to continue the season strong. (5-7 in 2025)

Today, we take a look at predicting three specific areas for the team. Remember these are bold(ish) predictions. (All stats via CFBSTATS)

1 LSU Offense OVER 50% in 3rd Down Completions

This is going to be a tricky one seeing the team complete this will be dictated by the style of it and I do think they can hit it. Provided the LSU offense plays to its standard.

The important key here will be if Durham and Nussmeier are a full go. Seeing them down could be costly so we can feel it out early, but if they are good, 3rd and short could be on the menu all night.

2 Whit Weeks Strip Sack + Scoop and Score +10000

2 Garrett Nussmeier OVER 248.5 Passing Yards AND 2+ Touchdowns (-110, FanDuel)

Back the bus and take this combo parlay and believe in your QB! Expect some quick and dynamic passing in this one. Ole Miss looked shaky vs. Arkansas and Kentucky, winning by one score and that secondary can be had. Add a hopefully healthier Nuss and we could see a break out game by the star QB.

Hitting this will prove tricky, but I do believe LSU has the offensive play makers to make it tough on Ole Miss in coverage. Between the receivers, tight ends and backs, I like a combo of them to find the end zone and get enough YAC to help this not only get the over in yardage, but also add the TD passes.

Sign up for Splash Sportswith an exclusive code: CPAE6W

3 Game Total OVER 56.5 (-110, FanDuel)

Points, points, points, even with the concern with these two offenses, expect some fireworks. The teams have definitely played subpar up to this point, but with Ole Miss going with an inexperienced QB in Kiffin’s offense, but a dynamic one and we know what the Nuss Buss brings, I expect a lot of points.

Kiffin told us to take the over too, by the way, so expect a total point fest. The skill players are good and these offenses should cook.

Final score prediction:LSU 31-27 Ole Miss

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hails Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich-like style of play

Bayern Munich is flying high under second-year head coach Vincent Kompany…and the bosses can’t seem to stop highlighting the contrasts.

This time former chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge took to comparing Kompany to past Bayern greats, who put on a show and won with flair. Read between the lines for the exception — or, you know, in the lines. It’s right there.

“Louis van Gaal managed that [playing attractive football]. Or Čik Čajkovski, under whom we were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1965. And our current coach, Vincent Kompany, also fits into this category,” Rummenigge said in comments captured by Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “Because we had a difficult time with Thomas Tuchel, and that period wasn’t very successful either. In 2023, we didn’t win the title on our own merits; Dortmund squandered or gave away the title, depending on how you want to put it.

“With Vinnie, the enjoyment has returned, as you can see from the style of play, which is entertaining. With him, we are back at a level where you can say: ‘That’s FC Bayern-like When I go to the stadium, I just want to watch good matches. Ideally, I also want to see a successful FC Bayern. What’s often forgotten is that football is a game and should be fun. Football isn’t just about winning. In the end, it’s not just the final score that matters, but the quality of the game itself.”

Well — the winning doesn’t hurt. But if you’re going to play ugly and pragmatic at Bayern, you’d better win. And Tuchel did not.
