OKC Thunder jersey history No. 44 – Terence Stansbury (1986-87)

The Oklahoma City Thunder (and the Seattle Supersonics before them) have 51 jersey numbers worn by the players who have suited up for the franchise since its founding at the start of the 1967-68 season. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Thunder Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.

And while those Supersonics jerseys may not remain part of the franchise history should a new team be established in Seattle as was the case with the return of the Charlotte Hornets, they are part of the Thunder’s history today.

For this article, we continue with the 42nd jersey number in the series, jersey No. 44, with 15 players in total having donned the jersey in the history of the franchise.

The sixth of those players who did so in the Seattle SuperSonics era, guard alum Terence Stansbury. After ending his college career at Temple, Stansbury was picked up with the 15th overall selection of the 1984 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.

The Wilmington, Delaware native would play the first two seasons of his pro career with the Indiana Pacers after being dealt there before the start of his rookie campaign. That ended with a trade to Seattle for the final season of his NBA career in 1986.

During his time suiting up for the Sonics, Stansbury wore only jersey No. 44 and put up 4.0 points and 1.3 assists per game.

Arch Manning stands over Sam Houston defender after first-quarter TD run against the Bearkats

Arch Manning was quite animated after scoring a first-quarter touchdown against Sam Houston on Saturday night.

Manning rushed for a five-yard touchdown and immediately stood over the Bearkats defender who tried to tackle him before he got into the end zone.

Manning was even so exuberant after the touchdown that the referee in charge of the game had a quick discussion with him. The redshirt sophomore was not flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, though a very strict officiating crew could have justified a taunting call.

Even after the quick chat with the referee, Manning was still animated.

It was Manning’s first TD of the night and he added another less than three minutes into the second quarter on a 32-yard TD pass to Jordan Washington for a 21-0 Longhorns lead.

Manning has struggled under the weight of preseason expectations so far in 2024 and Saturday night was a chance to build some confidence against a 39.5-point underdog.

Largely thanks to his last name and Texas’ status as the preseason No. 1 team in the AP Top 25, Manning opened the season as the Heisman favorite. But he has completed just 55% of his passes through the first three games of the season with six touchdowns and three interceptions.

After missing on multiple throws in a 27-10 Week 3 win over UTEP, Manning said that he needed to play better and that “I know I’m going to play better and we’re going to be better as an offense.”

Price’s four touchdowns power No. 24 Notre Dame to 56-30 win over Purdue

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Jadarian Price scored four touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return, and No. 24 Notre Dame beat Purdue 56-30 on Saturday for its first win of the season.

The Irish beat the Boilermakers for the 10th straight time, including last season’s 66-7 blowout. Notre Dame leads the series 61-26-2.

Coming off losses against No. 4 Miami and No. 10 Texas A&M to start the season, Notre Dame (1-2) took command with three touchdowns in the third quarter to break away from a 35-23 halftime lead.

Price scored three touchdowns rushing (21, 9 and 1 yards). He carried the ball nine times for 74 yards and finished with 216 all-purpose yards.

Jeremiyah Love racked up 157 yards rushing on 19 carries, including scoring runs of 46 yards and 1 yard.

Notre Dame quarterback C.J. Carr was 10-of-12 passing for 223 yards and two touchdowns.

The game was delayed by 1 hour and 54 minutes due to a lightning delay late in the second quarter.

Purdue (2-2) was led by quarterback Ryan Browne’s 21-of-34 passing for 250 yards and one touchdown.

Waiting game

Purdue has endured lightning delays in two consecutive games. The Boilermakers had a lightning delay of 3:05 before it’s game against USC last week.

The takeaways

Notre Dame: The defense came under fire after recording only one sack and one interception in its first two games — a 27-24 loss to Miami and a 41-40 loss to Texas A&M. The Fighting Irish fought back with two interceptions and two sacks against Purdue. After giving up 23 points and 286 total yards of offense in the first half, Notre Dame only allowed one touchdown — with 1:53 left in the game.

Purdue: The defense looked sharp in its first two games, a 31-0 shutout of Ball State and a 34-17 victory against Southern Illinois. However, in its last two games — a 33-17 loss to USC and the romp by Notre Dame — the Boilermakers have given up a combined 995 yards of total offense.

Up next

Notre Dame plays at Arkansas next Saturday.

Purdue has an open week before returning to Big Ten action against Illinois on Oct. 4.

No. 18 Georgia Tech beats Temple 45-24, improves to 4-0

Haynes King threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns, Malachi Hosley ran for two touchdowns, and No. 18 Georgia Tech raced out to a quick three touchdown lead and beat Temple 45-24 on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets (4-0), playing their first home game as a ranked team since 2015, scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, gaining 199 yards on 16 offensive plays for a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

King opened the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run, and threw touchdown passes to Malik Rutherford and Isiah Canion.

Temple (2-2) pulled within 21-14 on Jay Ducker’s 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Evan Simon’s 28-yard scoring pass to JoJo Bermudez.

But Hosley scored his third and fourth rushing touchdowns of the season on consecutive drives, busting off left tackle for a 34-yard score and pushing forward from 2 yards out to restore the 21-point advantage by the end of three quarters.

The takeaway

Temple: After only gaining 105 total yards last week and failing to reach the end zone, Temple’s offense more than tripled that mark with 328 yards from scrimmage. Quarterback Simon’s 34-yard scramble in the second quarter set up Ducker’s score, and the touchdown pass to Bermudez came on Temple’s second offensive snap after halftime.

Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 for the first time since 2014, the last season the program reached the ACC Championship Game and finished with double-digit victories. It was also the first time since 2015 Georgia Tech has won a game while ranked, snapping a three-game losing streak while in the poll.

Up next

Temple has a bye week next Saturday before opening American Athletic Conference play at home against UTSA on Oct. 4.

Georgia Tech plays its first road ACC game of the season next Saturday at Wake Forest.

Bubba Chandler, 2 relievers combine on one-hitter as Pirates defeat A’s 2-0 to end 5-game skid

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Rookie Bubba Chandler and two relievers combined on a one-hitter, and Nick Yorke and Bryan Reynolds hit home runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Athletics 2-0 on Saturday night to end a five-game losing streak.

Chandler allowed only Jacob Wilson’s two-out double in the second inning while striking out six and walking none. He has given up one run in 11 innings in his last two starts since getting rocked for nine runs in 2 2/3 innings by Milwaukee on Sept. 7.

Braxton Ashcraft followed with three perfect innings and six strikeouts. Dennis Santana worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save and first since Sept. 3.

Yorke, a rookie, belted his first home run of the season and third of his career with two outs in the second inning off Luis Morales (4-2). Reynolds hit a 416-foot drive to right-center, his 16th, to lead off the third.

Besides Wilson, the Athletics’ only other baserunner came in the third inning when Chandler hit Brett Harris with a pitch.

Morales pitched six innings and surrendered the two home runs among five hits. The rookie struck out four and walked two.

Yorke had two of the Pirates’ five hits.

The Pirates won for just the second time in 14 games. The Athletics lost for the second time in nine games.

Once play resumed, VMI scored a touchdown on a pass to Owen Sweeney to tie the game at 14. Sweeney scored both touchdowns for the Keydets, totaling 106 yards.

Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire reacts to win, updates quarterback status

Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire reacts to win, updates quarterback status
originally appeared on The Sporting News

Texas Tech went on the road and made a statement with a 34–10 victory over Utah, a performance head coach Joey McGuire called one of his proudest.

“Man, we just came into a place that very few people come into and win games,” McGuire said. “Y’all know my woes as a head coach on the road. We’ve had a tough time. I thought our guys handled it like pros with an early kick and man, I couldn’t be more proud of what we did today.”

Quarterback Behren Morton left the game following a violent first-half hit, but McGuire quickly reassured his status. “He’s good. He was in the locker room, gave me a big hug, said congratulations,” McGuire said. “He’ll be back and be ready to go. He didn’t want to come out. He kept saying…I’m good. Leave me alone.’ That’s just who he is.”

Freshman Will Hammond answered the call, throwing for 169 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 61 more. “He’s a dude, man,” McGuire said. “If you walk on that field and you’re wearing the Double T, there’s only one way to play. And I thought he did a great job. We were able to take some one-on-one shots and win enough to really stretch the lead and win the game.”

McGuire credited his defense’s four takeaways as the turning point. “Every single day I send something about takeaways to the players,” he explained. “This morning I sent a 30-second video of Peanut Tillman. When you’re playing a game like this and it’s going to be such a defensive battle, every extra possession makes such a huge difference. And today it did.”

“There’s a lot of things said about our team and the cost of the roster,” McGuire added. “I would challenge anybody to have a closer locker room. These guys care more about each other, and it shows up in tight games.”

Notre Dame football dominates Purdue following weather delay, wins in blowout fashion

With the first half almost at a close, Notre Dame and Purdue were in a battle with the Irish holding onto a 28-13 lead but a weather delay put a hold to the action.

The Irish responded following the almost 2-hour delay scoring three touchdowns to extend the lead to 49-23, and Notre Dame would then cruise to a 56-30 victory. The Irish were lead by running back Jadarian Price, who totaled four touchdowns on the day, three on the ground and one on special teams.

The other back, Jeremiyah Love had himself an afternoon as well, as he rushed for 166-yards with two touchdowns of his own. Quarterback CJ Carr threw the ball just 12 times, but completed 10 of those attempts for 223-yards and two scores.

Once again, it wasn’t the best showing from the Notre Dame defense, but they did enough to keep the Boilermakers from getting the confidence that they could pull off the upset. It’s the Irish first win of the season, and 10th-straight against the in-state rivals. Notre Dame gets back on the field next weekend, when they travel to SEC country to face the Arkansas Razorbacks.

‘The switch has flipped;’ Dan Lanning, Oregon Ducks looking ahead to Penn State

Just when the Oregon Ducks were beginning to master the Pac-12, they made the stunning move to join the Big Ten. It didn’t seem to matter much as they had an undefeated regular season during their first year in the conference and didn’t lose their first game until the Rose Bowl.

They are looking to avenge that loss this season and take the next step toward a National Championship. Though we are nearly a month into the season now, that journey will truly begin next weekend when the Ducks take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in one of the most anticipated matchups of this young season.

The Ducks skated by the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, easily winning 41-7 in what was likely viewed as a tune-up game. They looked every bit of the championship contenders they were projected to be, and coach Dan Lanning didn’t waste any time hyping up the battle against Penn State.

When asked by reporters when the Ducks would turn their focus to the Nittany Lions, he told reporters, “The switch is already flipped.”

Today’s victory was already Oregon’s third blowout of the season, so there is no need to dwell on it and celebrate. They know this game against Penn State could be the difference between making or missing the College Football Playoff, or surrendering home-field advantage in the first round.

The Ducks’ run defense looked much improved compared to last week, which they will need to roll over to next Saturday when they play what is considered the top rushing attack in college football. They have their work cut out for them, but Lanning is making sure his team is ready and focused.
