Kings’ Dennis Schroder suspended three games for going after Luka Doncic in arena hallway postgame

Sacramento Kings’ point guard Dennis Schroder has been suspended three games without pay for “confronting and attempting to strike another player” in the hallway of Crypto.com Arena back on Dec. 28, the NBA announced on Saturday.

Schroder sought out and tried to start something with Luka Doncic, reports insider Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime and NBATV.

Schroder will sit out three games, starting Sunday against the Houston Rockets, including the Kings hosting Doncic and the Lakers on Monday. Schroder has averaged 13 points and 5.7 assists a game this season coming off the bench for the Kings.

The incident will cost Schroder $291,807 in salary, reports ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Kings PG Dennis Schröder suspended 3 games for reportedly trying to strike Luka Dončić after game

Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schröder has been suspended three games by the NBA for something that reportedly happened with Luka Dončić behind closed doors.

]

While the NBA does not specify the other player involved, Dončić was the educated guess even before Haynes reported his identity. Schröder and Dončić were exchanging trash talk during the game and the Lakers star targeted what might have been a sore spot for Schröder.

Schröder has had two tenures with the Lakers. In the first, he was brought in to be the team’s starting point guard and eventually left in free agency after a disappointing postseason.

It has been claimed that during the season, Schröder turned down a four-year, $84 million extension offer from the Lakers to test free agency. If that’s true, the bet on himself didn’t pay off, as he went on to sign only a one-year, $5.9 million deal with the Boston Celtics. Over the next four seasons, he made a total of approximately $34 million in salary from seven different teams, per Spotrac’s numbers.

Schröder has persistently denied any such offer was made, but the story has followed him ever since. And Dončić went right for it last month.

Apparently, Schröder had a problem with that.

The suspension takes away a player that ranked sixth on the Kings in points per game and second in assists while coming off the bench, though it’s hardly a long-term concern for a team crossing its fingers for a top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. If the suspension indeed begins Sunday, Schröder will miss games against the Rockets, Lakers and New York Knicks before being eligible to return against the Washington Wizards next Friday.

Dončić, meanwhile, leads the NBA in scoring with 33.3 points per game along with 8.8 assists and 8.0 rebounds. It’s been rough sledding for the Lakers recently, though, with an 8-8 record since Dec. 1. The Lakers lost their last game to the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

MLB suspends free-agent OF Max Kepler 80 games after positive PED test

Outfielder Max Kepler has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug Epitrenbolone, MLB announced Friday.

The 32-year-old Kepler is currently a free agent after spending last season with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played 127 games in 2025, slashing .216/.300/.391 with 18 home runs and 52 RBI. He’s ranked No. 41 on Yahoo Sports’ list of this winter’s top free agents.

According to ESPN, Kepler will receive credit against his 80-game pan via games played by the Phillies if he does not sign with an MLB team before Opening Day. However, he is automatically ineligible for the 2026 postseason.

According to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, Epitrenbolone is a metabolite of trenbolone, an anabolic steroid.

Kepler has played 11 MLB seasons, his first 10 with the Minnesota Twins before he signed a one-year, $10 million deal to join the Phillies in December 2024.

MLB: Diamondbacks trade McCarthy to Rockies [UPDATED]

Jake McCarthy was sitting on the couch in his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife Sophie on Saturday morning. They were celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary when his phone rang. It was his agent with the news that he had been traded.

The Scranton native was dealt by the Arizona Diamondbacks to fellow National League West Division rival the Colorado Rockies in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Josh Grosz. Both teams announced the trade on X.

Just two days earlier, McCarthy signed a one-year, $1.525 million deal with the Diamondbacks to avoid arbitration.

“Pretty crazy morning. Whenever something like that happens, it catches you off-guard,” McCarthy said. “After my agent called, I told my friends and family and then they (the teams) went public with it about an hour later. Obviously some big changes.”

With the Diamondbacks having a surplus of outfielders, McCarthy repeatedly was the subject of trade rumors the past year or two. Now that it happened, he looks forward to playing in Colorado.

“You accept that things could change very, very quickly,” McCarthy said. “Obviously, when you get the call, you’re kind of like, Whoa! But I can’t express how excited I am to get to Colorado. We played those guys a bunch in division. I really think they have a good group of young guys who are getting better and better.”

Last season was a rough one for McCarthy. He started 0 for 24 before getting his first hit and was batting .073 (3 for 41) through 14 games when the Diamondbacks sent him down to Triple-A Reno. In 49 games with the Aces, he batted .314 (65 for 207) with 43 runs, 15 doubles, four triples, one home run, 16 RBIs and 12 for 15 in stolen bases. He was recalled by Arizona in June and batted .204 (42 for 206) with 18 runs, seven doubles, five triples, four home runs, 20 RBIs and 6 for 6 in stolen bases in 67 games.

“Last year wasn’t great,” McCarthy said. “I was grateful to have the opportunity to go to camp this year and do what I think I’m capable of doing. All the motivation factors are still the same, it’s just in a different place.”

A Scranton High School graduate and University of Virginia product, McCarthy was drafted in the first round — 39th overall — by Arizona in 2018. He made his MLB debut April 27, 2021, and in five seasons with the Diamondbacks, he batted .260 with 339 hits, including 24 home runs, 139 RBIs, 185 runs and 83 stolen bases in 431 games.

He has a lot of fond memories of his time with the Diamondbacks and said he will miss his teammates the most.

“A lot of good friends. I was actually with a few guys from the team (Friday) night watching the football game,” McCarthy said. “A lot of us live out here. There’s a lot of guys on that team that I kind of grew up with, got drafted with, climbed the ranks through the minors. I think that’s the hardest part of it all. When you sign up for this job, you understand things can change at the drop of a hat. Saying goodbye to people I’ve been around the last six years is definitely tough. Same thing with my wife. She made a ton of friends with the other wives and things like that. That’s certainly going to be different, but really, really excited to get to work in Colorado. I really liked playing there. It’s one of my favorite parks to visit.”

McCarthy joins a Rockies outfield that includes Brenton Doyle, Mickey Moniak and Jordan Beck.

“I’m very excited to walk into a building in February and have a shot to contribute and earn a job and show people what I can do,” McCarthy said. “Obviously I want to be involved, but there’s no expectation. I want to go out and earn it and show people what I’m capable of.”

Ironically, the Rockies and Diamondbacks share the same spring training facility in Scottsdale, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. So things won’t seem too different when McCarthy heads to spring training.

“I’ve got to drive like 100 yards past where I have been turning in,” McCarthy said.

“It will be weird going to Arizona as a visitor.”

Colorado is scheduled to make its first trip to Arizona on May 21-24.

As for Josh Grosz, he was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB draft and part of the deal that brought third baseman Ryan McMahon to the Yankees at last season’s trade deadline. In a combined 23 games (22 starts) with High-A Hudson Valley and Spokane, he was 5-14 with a 4.67 earned-run average, 55 walks and 135 strikeouts in 125.1 innings. He ranked 20th in the Rockies’ farm system according to MLB Pipeline.

NBA referee Bill Kennedy ruled out indefinitely after leg injury

Late in the first quarter of Friday night’s matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic, veteran NBA referee Bill Kennedy appeared to suffer a leg injury.

The 59-year-old official, well known for his animated and entertaining explanations during coaches’ challenges, was forced to leave the court in a wheelchair.

Kennedy first appeared to limp while running down the floor during a 76ers fast break with roughly 2½ minutes left in the opening quarter. He was later seen hopping along the baseline as Paul George completed a layup, cutting Orlando’s lead to 22-20. Shortly afterward, Kennedy signaled for assistance as the Magic called a timeout.

With him unable to return, the remainder of the game was officiated by just two referees, and Philadelphia went on to win 103-91.

According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Kennedy will be sidelined indefinitely, though there is hope he can return before the regular season concludes in April.

Referees often face harsh scrutiny from American sports fans, sometimes warranted, but Kennedy has earned widespread respect and admiration over his career. He is considered one of the league’s top officials, praised for his clear communication and professionalism with players and coaches.

Earlier this month, Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla joked that he challenged a late-game call simply because he “really just kind of wanted to hear Billy Kennedy.”

Kennedy has long dreamed of becoming a referee. According to his biography, he began officiating at a young age and has steadily risen through the ranks. Just last week, The Sports Network in Canada called him a “national treasure” who delivers a “storytelling masterclass.”

Dante Moore gives update on 2026 NFL draft decision

It wasn’t quite the quarterback battle we expected between Dante Moore and Fernando Mendoza. While the Indiana signal-caller shined and continued to make his case as a top-five 2026 NFL draft selection, Moore did the opposite.

His very first pass of the game was an interception, and he fumbled the ball twice. Indiana converted each of those into seven points, a large cause of the deficit as the Ducks fell 56-22 to the Hoosiers.

The issues Moore showed in this game have caused many to question if it’s enough for him to return to school instead of declaring for the draft, which he was expected to be one of the first if not the first picks off the board.

Moore said after the loss that he was still undecided on what he was going to do, but there were things in his comments that made it sound like he still should be presumed out of the door.

“I knew that question was coming,” Moore responded. “I want to soak this moment up, that’s most important. Just giving hugs and just thank you’s to my teammates, but at the end of the day, I don’t know my decision yet.”

Moore continued on to say it was a conversation he was planning to have soon, but that he wasn’t going to make any type of knee-jerk reaction while being at an emotional point like this one.

“I’m going to talk to Coach (Dan) Lanning and talk to my family and everybody,” Moore said. “But at the end of the day, I don’t want to think about that right now. I just want to think about my teammates and give love to them.”

The quarterback finished out the loss 24-of-39 passing for 289 yards with two touchdowns, one interception, and a pair of fumbles. Moore placed the loss squarely on himself.

“First thing is first, the quarterback has to protect the football,” he said. “They have a great defense, great disguise and different looks, but you can’t win football games if you’re causing turnovers. Something of course I need to work at.”

It will be interesting to see what he ultimately decides, but there’s no question that Moore’s draft stock took a hit Friday.

South Carolina transfer WR Vandrevius Jacobs commits to Miami

South Carolina transfer wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs has committed to Miami, On3’s Hayes Fawcett reports.

Jacobs was South Carolina‘s second-leading receiver this season, behind just Nyck Harbor. The Fort Pierce, FL native hauled in 32 receptions for 548 yards and four touchdowns. Across three seasons of college football (one at Florida State and two at South Carolina), Jacobs boasts 47 catches for 789 yards and five touchdowns.

Prior to enrolling at Florida State, Jacobs was ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 338 overall player in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus. He was the No. 52 WR in his class and the No. 60 overall player from the state of Florida, hailing from Fort Pierce Westwood.

Jacobs joins loaded wide receiver room at Miami

Jacobs now heads to Miami, who snuck into the College Football Playoff as the No. 10 seed and will now face No. 1 Indiana in the National Championship Game. He will form a dynamic duo alongside star freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney, who has blossomed into one of the brightest young stars in the sport.

Toney has dominated opposing defenses across his freshman season. With one game to go, the Miami native boasts 99 receptions for 1,089 yards and nine touchdowns. The ‘Canes are certainly loading up in the receiver room as they look to build on this season’s momentum.

“What he’s shown all year long…he’s unfazed,” head coach Mario Cristobal said about Toney. “He’s unaffected. He trusts his teammates. His teammates trust him. When that ball came out, look how many teammates ran to him and said, “Hey, man. You’ll be all right. You’ll be back.”

Ohio State losing yet another player to the transfer portal

With six days left until the transfer portal closes, the Ohio State football team has already watched 27 players enter the portal… Check that, make it 28. Freshman safety Faheem Delane has announced that he, too, will be entering the portal in search of a new home to play his college ball.

Delane came to OSU as a highly touted prospect from Olney, Maryland. He was a top-100 recruit and the No. 8-ranked safety in the 2025 class according to 247Sports. Delane appeared in five games this season, tallying 12 total tackles, although the last game he appeared in was against Rutgers on November 22. Sophomore Leroy Roker may have passed Delane, as it was Roker, not Delane, who saw action against Miami in the Cotton Bowl. The true freshman will have three years of eligibility left.

Still, something seems off. Is there a money shortage? Is Matt Patricia leaving? Maybe Ryan Day? It is unusual for a team of Ohio State’s caliber, especially with the recent success, to be experiencing this kind of turnover. One thing is for sure: January 16 can’t get here fast enough for Buckeye Nation.
