Jeremy Fears Jr. will start for Michigan State basketball vs Illinois

EAST LANSING – Jeremy Fears Jr. will start as usual for No. 10 Michigan State basketball in its big showdown with No. 6 Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 7.

In the days leading up to the game, coach Tom Izzo said he was contemplating not starting the third-year sophomore point guard after his technical foul for kicking Minnesota’s Langston Reynolds in the second half of the Spartans’ 76-73 road loss Wednesday.

Izzo declined to announce his starting lineup on the radio before the game, but Fears was announced as a starter minutes before tipoff.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Fears leads MSU with 14.7 points and ranks second in the nation at 9.3 assists. His 30.8 minutes a game also are a team high. He had 10 points and 11 assists against the Gophers after winning back-to-back Big Ten player of the week honors, scoring 29 points in a comeback overtime win at Rutgers on Jan. 27 and topped his career high with 31 points in a home loss to No. 2 Michigan on Jan. 30.

After MSU’s 83-71 loss to the Wolverines,U-M coach Dusty May accused Fears of “dangerous” plays in that game, such as trips and elbows. In addition to the groin shot vs. Minnesota, there were more clips of Fears appearing to trip and elbow Gopher players, leading to a second-half benching.

Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa takes aim at Barcelona – “The biggest scandal in the history of Spanish football”

Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa takes aim at Barcelona – “The biggest scandal in the history of Spanish football”

It has been almost one month since Alvaro Arbeloa took over as Real Madrid head coach, replacing Xabi Alonso. It has been an up-and-down start for the former player, whose side have been faultless in La Liga but struggled in the Champions League and Copa del Rey, a competition they were knocked out of by Segunda side Albacete.

As per Diario AS, Arbeloa gave his assessment of where things are at the moment, as he seeks continue the strong league form against Valencia on Sunday.

“Great teams have to do a lot of things well to win. We can’t just master one, we have to be able to do many things well on the pitch: we have to be able to do them at the same time, have automatisms, think all the same way… And that can only be achieved by working and putting in hours.

“The predisposition that the players have had is still just as good, with the same desire and the same ambition of the objectives we have ahead of us. Tomorrow is a very complicated and difficult match. This week we’ve been focused on continuing that improvement in all aspects of the game. We are still far from our ceiling.”

Arbeloa on Fran Garcia: “He represents the badge very well”

Arbeloa was also asked about reports from earlier in the week that Fran Garcia almost left Real Madrid for AFC Bournemouth.

“The only thing I can say about Fran is that he is an exceptional boy, who is working 100% every day, as he always does. It’s something that as a coach I love to highlight. Here to win things and achieve goals we need everyone’s work, that everyone is prepared. Fran’s attitude and mentality is always an example. He is a boy who knows perfectly well what this house is, he represents the Real Madrid badge very well like many other homegrown players and for me it is fortunate to have him in the squad and that he continues with us.”

Arbeloa hits out at Barcelona over Negreira case “scandal”

In recent weeks, the Negreira case has been gaining more traction in the media, and Arbeloa was asked for his take on the situation. As expected, he was scathing of Barcelona.

“Regarding the Negreira case, I think that no one understands that, to this day, the most serious scandal in the history of Spanish football is still unresolved. For me that is what should worry a lot.”

Paul Goldschmidt and the Yankees reportedly agree to a 1-year, $4 million contract

NEW YORK — Paul Goldschmidt and the Yankees have agreed to a $4 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press, another move by New York that makes its 2026 roster resemble last year’s team.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the agreement was subject to a successful physical.

A seven-time All-Star and the 2022 NL MVP, the 38-year-old Goldschmidt hit .274 with 10 homers, 45 RBIs and a .731 OPS after signing a $12.5 million, one-year contract as a free agent.

He tailed off badly, hitting .287 with eight homers, 36 RBIs and a .776 OPS before the All-Star break and .245 with two homers, nine RBIs and a .631 OPS after. The right-handed-hitting Goldschmidt lost playing time at first to lefty-batting Ben Rice and started just two postseason games.

A seven-time Gold Glove winner, Goldschmidt provides defense and a veteran presence to a team seeking its first World Series title since 2009. He has a .288 average with 372 homers, 1,232 RBIs and an ,882 OPS in 15 major league seasons with Arizona (2011-18), St. Louis (2019) and the Yankees.

Coming off an AL Division Series loss to Toronto, New York has had a relatively quiet offseason. The Yankees’ major moves were re-signing outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger to a $162.5 million, five-year contract, acquiring left-hander Ryan Weathers from Miami in a trade and retaining center fielder Trent Grisham with a $22,025,000 qualifying offer.

James Harden’s availability has been updated for Cavs’ game vs. Kings

11-time NBA All-Star James Harden is set to make his debut for the Cleveland Cavaliers on the road tonight against the Sacramento Kings at 10 PM Eastern.

Cleveland acquired Harden in a stunning blockbuster deal earlier this week, trading away long-time point guard and two-time All-Star Darius Garland in the process.

It was an emotional week for Cavs fans. Many had personal attachments and appreciation for Garland’s time in Cleveland. His departure was marked final in Los Angeles as the entire team hugged him goodbye after their win over the Clippers.

Harden joins a roster rebuffed by championship expectations. Alongside him are two other newcomers in Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis. Those two made their debuts against the Clippers on Wednesday night. They return to play their former team tonight.

Watching how Harden can fit in will be a treat. This is a generationally talented playmaker who demands the ball more than most players in league history. At the same time, Harden has co-existed with numerous stars throughout his career. Fitting in with Donovan Mitchell shouldn’t be too heavy a challenge.

Harden is averaging an elite 25 points and 8 assists this season. He still has an uncanny ability for drawing fouls and getting to the free-throw line. But, he’s also as good as it gets at orchestrating the pick-and-roll. Pay close attention to how Harden and Jarrett Allen get along tonight. Their two-man action could quickly become a bread and butter for the Cavs.

Cleveland has been on a roll recently. They’ve won eight of their last two games, improving to 31-21 after a rocky start to the season. They have the easiest remaining schedule in the Eastern Conference and might have improved at the deadline. We will get our first look at their biggest addition in just a few hours.

Arizona Diamondbacks 2026 Non-Roster Invitees, Part 3

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – JULY 06: Relief pitcher Bryce Jarvis #40 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches during the game against the Kansas City Royals at Chase Field on July 06, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. (Photo by Chris Coduto/Getty Images) | Getty Images

More right-handed pitchers? Don’t mind if we do! This batch includes some names about which I’m quite excited, with promising youngsters, crafty veterans and someone bidding for their fourth season playing on the Diamondbacks…

Daniel Eagen (80)

There’s a case to be made that Eagen is the team’s top pitching prospect. A third-round pick in 2024, he chewed up High-A pitching last season, with a K-rate of 12.2 per nine innings (including an immaculate inning). He was subsequently named Northwest League Pitcher of the Year. The launching pad of Amarillo proved a reality check, Daniel allowing five home-runs in under twenty frames. But if he can adapt in 2026, his rise should continue. In addition to the interview below, I recommend checking out this episode of the Snakes Territory where Jesse Friedman had a very good in-depth discussion with Daniel.

Junior Fernandez (41)

This pitcher last appeared in the majors in 2022. After that, he tried his luck in Japan, but right distal clavicle lysis – and, no, I’ve never heard of that either – derailed his career there. Returning to the US, he has been in the minors with the Blue Jays, Nationals, Royals and Mets. Most recently, he had four scoreless appearances for Triple-A Syracuse, before spending the winter in the Dominican Republic, pitching for Aguilas Cibaenas. There’s no denying the stuff – Statcast had his sinker averaging 98.7 mph in 2022, and he fanned 57 over 35 AAA innings last year. But control has been an issue, and will likely define whether he’s useful in his time here.

Tom Hatch (43)

The D-backs will be Hatch’s sixth organization: last year was his most active in the majors, tossing 34 innings between the Twins and Royals. Though the results were ho-hum, a 5.82 ERA and 6.02 FIP. Like Fernandez, he moved to Japan for the 2023 season, and it did not go well for him either: a 7.46 ERA in 22 innings. The following year, he went to Korea, but the contract got nixed after his physical. Between that and his poor peripherals last season, this seems more like a depth piece. Unless something changes dramatically, if we see Hatch in the majors, it’ll indicate that something has gone very wrong for the 2026 Diamondbacks.

Bryce Jarvis (40)

Jarvis looked set for a career role as a long reliever in 2023-24, throwing 83 innings with a 3.14 ERA. However, that outperformed his FIP by almost two runs (5.09), and regression to that hit hard in 2025. His FIP was a career-best 4.50; his ERA a career-worst 5.73. He was designated for assignment in December, to make room for Michael Soroka, but went unclaimed and is now outside the 40-man roster for the first time since he made his debut in August 2023. However, there still might be a role for him in 2026, unless the team wants to use a starting pitcher in the long relief role, rather than a specialist like Jarvis.

Derek Law (38)

This is definitely the most experienced pitcher in the group, with 322 major-league games to his name, since Law made his debut with the Giants in 2016. He was very good during his last stab at the big leagues, in 2024. Derek had a 2.60 ERA over 90 innings out of the Nationals bullpen. However, a forearm issue derailed his 2025 campaign before it got going, eventually needing surgery in late July. The estimated recovery time at that point was ten months, so he is highly unlikely to be anywhere near ready by Opening Day. Proving his health will be the first thing, but if he returns to anything close to his 2024 form, Law would be a good pickup when he returns to the mound.

Hawks’ new forward Jonathan Kuminga is out at least through All-Star break with bone bruise in knee

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Hawks newly acquired forward Jonathan Kuminga will miss at least one week while recovering from a left knee bone bruise.

The Hawks announced before Saturday night’s home game against Charlotte that Kuminga suffered the injury while playing for Golden State at Dallas on Jan. 22. The Hawks acquired Kuminga and guard Buddy Hield in the trade which sent center Kristaps Porzingis to the Warriors on Wednesday night.

The Hawks say Kuminga will be evaluated following the All-Star break.

Atlanta forward-center Onyeka Okongwu is available against Charlotte after missing four games with a dental fracture. Okongwu wore a protective mask in pregame warmups.

WNBA’s newest offer makes small revenue sharing increases, housing concessions AP sources say

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA’s newest proposal to the players’ union that was delivered Friday made small increases to its revenue sharing offer and concessions on housing according to two people familiar with the negotiations.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Saturday because of the sensitive nature of the discussions.

The major sticking point continues to be revenue sharing. Union president Nneka Ogwumike told the AP on Friday — before the league’s proposal was submitted to the union — that the two sides weren’t close on that topic in their effort to strike a new collective bargaining agreement.

“We need to get to a percentage that makes sense for us. That really does take on the value that the players are looking for and the players are seeking,” she said.

The players want around 30% of the gross revenue — money generated before expenses — for the first year in their last proposal sent in December.

Under the league’s new proposal, they slightly increased their revenue sharing offer which would give players over 70% of net revenue. That would be their take of the profits after expenses are paid. Those expenses would include upgraded facilities, charter flights, five-star hotels, medical services, security and arenas.

The salary cap for 2026 in Friday’s offer would be $5.65 million the first year — up slightly from the previous proposal.

The people said the league offered players a change in housing. Teams have paid for housing since the league first started. Now, players receiving the league’s proposed minimum salary as well as rookies in their first season will receive one-bedroom apartments paid for by the team. That would last for the first three years of the new CBA. After that players would have to pay for their housing.

Players who were traded during the season would have their housing taken care of as well. The two developmental players who teams would add this year would get studio apartments.

All other players would pay for their own housing.

“Housing is a really, really big one. It’s a matter of safety, efficiency — being able to get to get from home to the practice facility to the arena,” Ogwumike said. “Being able to know where all the players are. It’s something that has always been provided. To be honest, I think that it’s probably the largest benefit that we’ve had as professional athletes.”

Ogwumike said that the union has offered ways to have the cost of the housing paid for by the players share of revenue.

The league’s proposal also offered meeting specific standards on practice facilities.

The new proposal came a few days after the two sides had a three-hour meeting Monday at the NBA offices. Many of the changes in the new offer came directly from discussions at the meeting.

The union had been waiting for more than six weeks from a response from the league to its last proposal.

According to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to the AP last month, the league previously didn’t feel that proposal was much different than an earlier one the union had sent as the revenue sharing numbers hadn’t changed much at all and didn’t warrant a new response. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations.

If a new CBA isn’t agreed upon soon, it could delay the start of the 2026 season. It’s already delayed the expansion draft for Toronto and Portland.

The last CBA was announced in the middle of January 2020, a month after it had been agreed to. It could easily take two months from when a new CBA is reached to get to the start of free agency, which was supposed to begin last month. With a massive salary raise expected in a new CBA, 80% of players in the league are free agents this offseason, which makes this the biggest opportunity for player movement in the history of the WNBA.

A delay would hurt both sides. The season is supposed to start May 8 and every game that is missed, revenue would be lost, as would be sponsorships, television money and fan support.

Players voted to give union leadership the right to strike in December. Ogwumike said despite that, a strike is not imminent, although the union did post on social media a video about the 1964 NBA All-Star Game strike. The NBA All-Star Game is next weekend in Los Angeles.

“Having the strike on the table is something that we’re very much aware of, but there’s so many more conversations that have to happen,” Ogwumike said. “You know, we’re not just going to say, `Hey, today’s the day (we’ll strike).′ You know, I think that’s what what we’re demonstrating right now is negotiating in good faith.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers may have to wait a little longer for James Harden’s debut with the team. Harden was initially expected to play on Saturday against the Sacramento Kings. According to the latest injury report, he may have to wait.

Harden is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game with the reason being “trade pending.” This designation isn’t uncommon for those who were recently traded. Currently, 18 players are on the league’s injury report with the designation of “trade pending.”

If Harden can’t go on Saturday, he would have to wait until Monday when the Cavs conclude their Western Conference road trip against the Denver Nuggets.

Reports that the Cavs traded for Harden came through on Tuesday. The official trade announcement from the team came the following day.

Harden hasn’t played since Jan. 30. He missed his last two games with the Los Angeles Clippers for personal reasons — which was due to the impending trade — and he wasn’t available for Cleveland’s first game since the trade was announced on Wednesday.

On the season, Harden is averaging 25.4 points, 8.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game on .419/.347/.901 shooting splits.

Harden isn’t the only Cavalier who may be missing Friday’s game. Dean Wade has also been added to the injury report with a left ankle sprain. He is listed as questionable for the game.

Wade is averaging 5.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game on .417/.340/.750 shooting this season.

The Cavaliers will also be without the services of Evan Mobley (calf), Max Strus (foot), and Emanuel Miller (G League).

Update: Harden has been upgraded to available for Saturday’s game. Wade has been downgraded to doubtful.
