Apple’s ‘Lockdown Mode’ Could Stop the Government From Breaking Into Your iPhone

In January, the FBI made headlines after it raided the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson. It was a shocking case of law enforcement not just overriding one journalist’s privacy, but the integrity of the entire news organization. The devices the FBI seized—which included personal devices as well as a Washington Post-issued laptop—contained Natanson’s personal contacts, correspondences, and the Slack channels of the Washington Post itself.

But while the FBI was able to access some of the devices, it was not able to access Natanson’s iPhone. That’s because the device was in Lockdown Mode, which prevented the FBI’s Computer Analysis Response Team (CART) from breaking into it. This isn’t a setting that is exclusive to journalists: You have this option baked into your iPhone as well, and can choose to turn it on at any time. The thing is, unless you’re a high-profile target, you probably don’t want to.

How does Lockdown Mode work?

Lockdown Mode is an option on iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs, designed for users who could be the target of sophisticated cyberattacks. Think politicians, businessmen, activists, and, of course, journalists—really, anyone high-profile that works or takes action in a way that could draw the ire of powerful organizations or governments.

Because attackers target devices with spyware, the goal of Lockdown Mode is to reduce the attack surface of your device in order to prevent potential cyberattacks from working. Attackers can install spyware on a target’s device in a number of ways, through links, attachments, wired connections, and file downloads, the same way you can install malware by clicking a malicious link in an email, or downloading a corrupt extension from the web. Lockdown Mode locks down these vulnerabilities and eliminates as many potential attack routes as possible.

To achieve this, Lockdown Mode severely impacts a number of functions you may use on your device every day. According to Apple, that includes the following:

  • Messages: Lockdown Mode will block most message attachment types, other than “certain images, video, and audio.” Links and link previews are blocked.

  • Web browsing: The feature blocks “complex web technologies,” which could impact how certain websites load or function. You may not see certain web fonts, and you may see missing image icons in place of pictures.

  • FaceTime: Incoming FaceTime calls are blocked, except for contacts you have called within the past 30 days. You can’t use SharePlay or take Live Photos in FaceTime calls.

  • Apple services: Invitations to Apple services like invites to manage a smart home are blocked, unless you have previously invited that person. GameCenter will not work, and Focuses will not work “as expected.”

  • Photos: Lockdown Mode strips photos of their location data when you share them, and shared albums are taken out of your Photos app. You won’t be able to receive new shared album invites. You can still see shared albums on devices that don’t have Lockdown Mode enabled.

  • Device connections: Your device needs to be unlocked before it can communicate with another computer. In addition, your Mac also requires your explicit approval before the connection can be made.

  • Wireless connectivity: You won’t automatically join non-secure wifi networks, and you will disconnect from existing non-secure wifi networks. Lockdown Mode also blocks 2G and 3G cellular support.

  • Configuration profiles: You can’t install configuration profiles, and the device can’t enroll in Mobile Device Management.

Apple makes a point to say that phone calls and “plain text messages” will work as normal, however incoming calls won’t ring on your Apple Watch. Emergency SOS also will continue to work.

These restrictions make it much more difficult for a bad actor to install spyware on your device, though it also makes it more difficult to use your device. A shared album invite could contain malware, but by removing the feature entirely, you miss out on photos from friends and family. Any spyware coming from a malicious link or image will be blocked, but if you frequently send photos, videos, and other attachments in Messages, you’ll miss out.

That’s why these measures are really designed only for individuals who think they’ll be targeted by sophisticated actors. It seems that could include governments secretly installing spyware on targets’ devices, or the FBI stealing your device in a raid. It’s worth noting that the FBI was able to access Natanson’s other devices, including a MacBook Pro that unlocked with her fingerprint. The agency’s warrant compelled Natanson to unlock her devices with biometrics if they were enabled. Lockdown Mode could not have prevented that, so it’s not clear why the FBI didn’t force Natanson to unlock the iPhone in question, too.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode

If you understand the restrictions, but still want to try Lockdown Mode, you’ll need to be running the following software version on each of the Apple devices you want to use Lockdown Mode with:

  • iPhone: iOS 16 or later

  • iPad: iPadOS 16 or later

  • Apple Watch: watchOS 10 or later

  • Mac: macOS Ventura or later

Apple says “additional protections” are available for iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma or later. In addition, you should update your device to the latest software version before turning on Lockdown Mode if you want all the latest protections.

You can turn on Lockdown Mode on any of your Apple devices, but you must do so individually on each. You’ll find the option at the bottom of the “Privacy & Security” section in Settings (System Settings on Mac). Hit “Turn On Lockdown Mode,” then review the pop-up that appears and choose “Turn On Lockdown Mode” again. You’ll need to choose to “Turn On & Restart,” then enter your device’s password or passcode for the feature to take effect.

Nets reportedly will waive Cam Thomas after trade deadline passes

The Brooklyn Nets will reportedly waive guard Cam Thomas after the NBA trade deadline passed, according to ESPN Insider Shams Charania.

Thomas did not depart with the team before Thursday’s game against the Orlando Magic, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. He was ruled out for personal reasons.

Thomas has averaged 15.6 points, 3.1 assists and 1.9 rebounds on 39.9% shooting from the field. His role has also decreased under Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez. He started only eight games and averaged 24.3 minutes per game for the Nets this season.

Last season, Thomas was limited to 25 games after nursing a hamstring injury. Thomas’ best season came in his third year, when he averaged 22.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

[Get more Nets news: Brooklyn team feed]

This will allow Thomas to get a fresh start. The Nets drafted the 24-year-old guard in the first round in 2021. He spent his entire career with the team before Thursday’s move. Thomas joined the league from LSU as a confident microwave scorer off the bench. He played his rookie season with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

Waiving Thomas should open up more minutes for rookie guards Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Ben Saraf and Drake Powell on the 13-36 Nets. The Nets drafted Demin, Saraf and Traore in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. Demin leads the group. He is averaging 10.5 points, 3.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds.

Traore has averaged 6 points, 2.9 assists and 1.4 rebounds. Saraf has averaged 4.6 points, 2.6 assists and 1.5 rebounds. Powell has averaged 6.1 points, 1.6 assists and 1.6 rebounds.

The move will also open up a roster spot for the Nets after they acquired Josh Minott from the Boston Celtics, Hunter Tyson from the Denver Nuggets and Ochai Agbaji from the Toronto Raptors. The team also held on to Michael Porter Jr., who was in trade rumors before the deadline.

Grizzlies don’t trade Ja Morant ahead of Thursday’s deadline after moving Jaren Jackson Jr.

The Memphis Grizzlies will apparently not be moving Ja Morant ahead of the NBA trade deadline, despite reports of a potential trade.

Memphis had reportedly shopped the 26-year-old point guard but did not find a suitable match. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that, despite some intrigue, no teams were “willing to make a serious offer.”

Yahoo Sports Kevin O’Connor reported on Wednesday that the Sacramento Kings were the most connected with Morant, with Miami Heat being engaged as well.

Yahoo Sports Kelly Iko reported that Morant and his camp were not interested in the Kings and preferred the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves as top destinations. Iko also reported that despite Morant’s lack of interest the team will do what is best for the franchise.

Morant is under contract with the Grizzlies through the 2027–28 season, currently in the third year of a five-year, $197 million designated rookie extension. He will be eligible to sign a three-year, $178 million extension this summer.

After a promising start to his career as the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year, Morant’s biggest issue has been staying on the court. This season, he has played in just 20 games, missing time with calf and ankle injuries and serving a one-game suspension.

Morant has not played more than 65 games in a season since his rookie year. During the 2023–24 season, Morant appeared in just nine games after serving a 25-game suspension to start the year and later suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.

This year, Morant is averaging fewer than 20 points per game for the first time since his second NBA season, while averaging a career-low 3.3 rebounds per game.

News that the Grizzlies would be keeping Morant comes just two days after the team traded away Jaren Jackson Jr. in a stunning eight-player swap with the Utah Jazz. The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year was sent to the Jazz, along with John Konchar, Vince Williams Jr. and Jock Landale.

In return, the Grizzlies received Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks and Georges Niang — along with three future first-round draft picks.

[Subscribe to Yahoo Sports NBA on YouTube]

Morant now remains a fixture in what’s become an obvious rebuild for Memphis, amid a series of significant changes for the franchise over the past year.

Last season, the Grizzlies fired head coach Taylor Jenkins and promoted assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo just nine games before the playoffs. Jenkins spent six seasons with the franchise before the two sides parted ways.

In the offseason, the team traded Desmond Bane to the Magic in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and a future pick swap after Bane signed a max rookie extension with the team in 2023. Bane had spent his first five seasons with the Grizzlies.

These Sony Over-Ear Headphones Come in Three Colors and Are Under $100 Right Now

Not everybody needs, wants, or can afford the “best” headphones available, especially when they can easily cost half a grand. If the Sony XM6, which I called the best over-ear headphones of 2025 (and 2026 so far), are not in your budget, then perhaps the more affordable Sony WH-CH720N could be. While they’re not quite as premium, they’re significantly cheaper and offer good enough quality for most people. You can get them for $97 (originally $179.99) on Amazon right now.

These are Sony’s entry-level over-ear headphones, and Sony mostly made cuts in the design and build. When you hold them, they might feel hollow and light, but they’re still comfortable since the earcups are well-cushioned, according to CNET’s review. However, Sony did not make a lot of sacrifices in the audio or ANC department, which, at the end of the day, is what’s most important.

While they’ve dropped below $100 before, all three colorways have not been available at their current price at the same time—until now. These headphones use the same Sony Sound Connect app as the flagship models and share some of the same features, like multipoint technology to connect to up to two devices. They also come with Google Fast Pair and Find My Device support, nice features to have for convenience, and if you misplace them. You can get 35 hours of battery life with ANC on and 50 hours with ANC off, and the charging is quick, with three minutes giving you three hours of juice.

The ANC is not as good as the latest XM6, but it works great for under $100, according to Mashable’s review and they’ll block most ambient noise outdoors or indoors. Transparency mode is also great, allowing you to have conversations and hear bikes or cars passing by. The adjustable EQ in the app means you can tweak the crisp and vibrant sound of the WH-CH720N to your liking.

The Top 10 TV Series This Month, According to Streaming Data

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

January 2026’s ten most-streamed TV series are a balanced group, including six reality-based dramas and four fantasy/sci-fi hits. One the side of realism, we’ve got medical drama vérité The Pitt, a pair of spy shows (The Night Manager and Ponies), and a gay hockey romance in Heated Rivalry. The fantasy side includes the post-apocalyptic black humor of Fallout, the suburban supernatural series Stranger Things, and a trip back to Westeros with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

A more important running theme this month: These shows are all critical darlings, including a couple perfect Rotten Tomatoes 100% winners (The Night Manager and Pluribus) and five other shows above 95% (The Pitt, Fallout, Heated Rivalry, Ponies, and A Knight of Seven Kingdoms). Even the “worst” of the bunch, Landman, is sitting at a solid 78%. Good job watching good shows, America!

Here’s the full list of the top 10 most-streamed shows of January 2026 across all major streaming services, as compiled by JustWatch.

The Night Manager

If you’re into high-stake international espionage, you have to check the most-streamed series this week. The Night Manager is based on John le Carre’s best-selling novel and stars Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, an MI-6 agent whose mission is to infiltrate the inner circle of dangerous arms trader Richard “Dickie” Onslow Roper, played by Hugh Laurie. It has been ten long years since the show first premiered, but both seasons of this BBC-made series are available in full as of Feb. 1, so binge it up, man. Stream The Night Manager on Prime Video.

The Pitt

HBO’s gritty, hyper-realistic medical drama has earned acclaim from critics and audiences for its relentless pace, following a single 15-hour shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Starring Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael Robinavitch, The Pitt ditches the “disease-of-the-week” format of many medical shows in favor of a study of the toll the modern medical system places on everyone involved. Season one earned five Emmy awards, and judging from the first few episodes, season two might win more. Stream The Pitt on HBO Max.

Fallout

Post-apocalyptic action-comedy Fallout is like nothing that’s been on TV before. Staying true to the gritty, gruesome, and irreverent spirit of the video games upon which it is based, it follows naive former vault dweller Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) as she leaves her protected bunker to track down her father in the irradiated Wasteland. The show’s standout characters include Lucy’s duplicitous pop (Kyle MacLachlan), conflicted mech-warrior Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), the walking, talking, noseless, undead remains of a pre-apocalypse Hollywood cowboy. Season one earned a staggering 17 Emmy nominations in 2024, and the just-finished season two earned even greater critical acclaim for its expansion into the iconic ruins of New Vegas. Stream Fallout on Prime Video.

Heated Rivalry

If you want explicit hockey player-on-hockey player action with a 98% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, HBO’s Heated Rivalry is a must-watch. Set against the hyper-masculine, hyper-homophobic world of professional sports, the series brings emotional depth to the story of a years-long secret romance between Canadian “golden boy” Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Russian bad boy Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). Stream Heated Rivalry on HBO Max.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes fans back to Westeros, 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, the series is less about world-spanning politics and more about smaller, character driven moments in the lives of humble, towering knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his diminutive, mysterious squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). It’s shorter, lighter, and funnier than its forebears (but not too light—this is still Westeros, after all). Stream Knights of the Seven Kingdoms on HBO Max.

Stranger Things

A veritable streaming institution, Stranger Things reached its end with season five. Set in November 1987, the final chapter follows the Hawkins gang in a mission to find and kill Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) while navigating a town under strict military quarantine. From Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) evading a new government threat to Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) unlocking his psychic potential to protect his friends, the series remains an emotional masterclass in supernatural sci-fi horror—despite a divisive finale. Stream Stranger Things on Netflix.

Pluribus

Creator and executive producer Vince Gilligan takes a hard turn from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul with Pluribus, a slow-burn post-apocalyptic sci-fi series starring Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, a stubborn and irascible novelist in Albuquerque who finds herself one of the last 13 individuals on Earth in the wake of viral outbreak that has turned the rest of the species into a hive mind. “They” aren’t (isn’t?) exactly evil, but they are extremely persistent about trying to get the mysteriously immune Carol to join their ranks (as nicely but firmly as possible). Stream Pluribus on Apple TV+.

Landman

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s Landman is is a gritty modern Western set in the oil fields of West Texas. Billy Bob Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, a “crisis executive” for an oil company who must navigate a law-light landscape of roughnecks, billionaires, and dangerous drug cartels in order to make sure fuel keeps getting dug out of the ground. Stream Landman on Paramount+.

His & Hers

Based on the 2020 novel by Alice Feeney, His & Hers is a twisty mystery thriller series that stars Tessa Thompson as Anna Andrews, a disgraced Atlanta journalist who returns to her small Georgia hometown to cover a brutal murder, only to find her estranged husband, Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), leading the investigation. As the former couple competes to solve the case, each grows more suspicious that the other is the killer. The six-episode run makes it a great series if you’re longing for an engaging drama with a definite conclusion. Stream His & Hers on Netflix.

Ponies

In international espionage parlance, “ponies” are “persons of no interest.” In this case, that Bea (Emilia Clarke) and Twila (Haley Lu Richardson), two American women in Cold War Moscow whose “normal” lives are upended when their CIA agent husbands die in a mysterious plane crash. The pair convince the U.S. government to let them try to infiltrate the KGB and find out the truth of what happened, using their ordinariness as the ultimate cover. Boasting a 96% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the eight-episode season balances steamy romance with intense espionage. Stream Ponies on Peacock.

Tarik Skubal reportedly wins arbitration case vs. Tigers, will earn arbitration-record $32 million in 2026

A three-person independent arbitration panel has awarded Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal a $32 million contract for the 2026 MLB season, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Thursday. It is a one-year deal for Skubal, 29, and he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next offseason.

A Wednesday hearing saw both the Tigers and Skubal present their cases for what the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner should earn for the 2026 season. Prior to the hearing, Skubal’s agent, Scott Boras, asked for an arbitration-record salary of $32 million — $1 million more than the $31 million Juan Soto got in 2024 with the New York Yankees. The Tigers proposed $19 million, and the $13 million difference in filings was the largest in MLB arbitration history.

The panel was tasked with selecting one of the two numbers from Skubal and the Tigers, not determining an amount between the totals.

The previous arbitration record for a pitcher was $19.75 million, which was awarded to former Tigers lefty David Price in 2015. Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s $19.9 million salary in 2024 was the highest total in an arbitration case decided by a panel. Jeanne Charles and Walt De Treaux, who were on the panel for Guerrero’s decision, were also part of the Skubal hearing.

Skubal’s was the third arbitration case decision this offseason, with the previous two also going the player’s way. Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kyle Bradish was awarded $3.55 million over the team’s ask of $2.875 millio, and Houston Astros catcher Yainer Diaz received $4.5 million rather than the $3 million the team proposed.

[Get more Tigers news: Detroit team feed]

Seven more players have arbitration hearings scheduled, including Milwaukee Brewers catcher Willson Contreras, Kansas City Royals pitcher Kris Bubic and Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson.

The 29-year-old Skubal has been one of the best pitchers in baseball the past two seasons, compiling a 31-10 record with 469 strikeouts, a 0.91 WHIP and a .201 opponent batting average in 381 1/3 innings pitched. He’s a two-time All-Star and All-MLB first-team player, he won the pitching Triple Crown in 2024, and he’s one of six players who have won multiple Cy Youngs in the past 15 years.

Last season, Skubal led the Tigers pitching staff backed by Jack Flaherty and Case Mize. Detroit finished second in the AL Central with an 87-75 record and reached the ALDS, in which they lost to the Seattle Mariners in five games.

Skubal, who will be one of Team USA’s top arms at next month’s World Baseball Classic, won one of his three postseason starts, pitching 20 2/3 innings and allowing four earned runs while striking out 36 with opponents batting .143 against him.

Clippers reportedly trade starting center Ivica Zubac to Pacers for Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson and 2 first-round picks

The Los Angeles Clippers continue to make moves ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, reportedly trading starting center Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports. The Pacers will reportedly be trading Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, two first-round picks and one second-round pick for Zubac and Kobe Brown.

The Clippers will reportedly be receiving a 2026 first-round pick from the Pacers, protected 1-4 and 10-30, plus a 2029 Pacers unprotected first-rounder. If the Pacers first-rounder this year falls outside of that 1-4/10-30 range, it converts to the Pacers’ 2031 unprotected first.

The Pacers reportedly made a run at Jazz center Walker Kessler before pivoting to Zubac, according to NBA Insider Chris Haynes. They reportedly offered two unprotected first-round picks before Utah declined.

The move comes after the team also traded away 11-time All-Star and 17-year veteran James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Darius Garland.

Zubac has become a solid role player over the past few years for the Clippers. His stock rose even more after his breakthrough season last year, when he was a second-team NBA All-Defensive player for the first time. Zubac also averaged a career high of 16.8 points and 12.6 rebounds last season and finished sixth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

While Zubac’s numbers have dipped this season, he’s still averaging a double-double with 14.4 points and 11 rebounds per game. Zubac’s entire career has been spent in LA, as he was a second-round draft pick for the Lakers in 2016 before being traded to the Clippers in 2019.

[Get more Clippers news: Los Angeles team feed]

Zubac will now be the Pacers center of the future after the team lost Myles Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks in free agency this offseason. He will also be paired up with Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton and forward Pascal Siakam.

The Pacers are 13-38 and last in the Eastern Conference, after a Finals appearance last season. The team has struggled to replace Haliburton, who is still recovering from a torn Achilles that he suffered in Game 7 of the 2025 Finals. Last season, Haliburton averaged 18.6 points, 9.2 assists and 3.5 rebounds.

The Pacers have been led by Siakam, who has averaged 23.8 points, 6.8 and 4 assists in his third season with the team. Siakam was also recently selected for the World team in the NBA All-Star Game.

The Pacers also added Brown, who was a former first-round pick by the Clippers in 2023 and has averaged 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in limited minutes.

The Clippers added former Pacers first-round picks Mathurin and Jackson to their core of Kawhi Leonard and Garland. Mathurin is second on the Pacers in scoring, averaging 17.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Injuries have limited him to 28 games.

Jackson has averaged 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds on 58.2% from the field. Jackson missed most of last season with a torn Achilles.

Despite moving off Zubac and Harden for younger players and picks, the Clippers held on to Leonard at the deadline. The Clippers are currently 23-27.

Redditors Have Figured Out a Way to Save Hundreds on a Whoop Subscription

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

I’ve always said there’s no good reason to buy an older model Whoop band, since the company will give you the latest model for free when you subscribe. But on Reddit, some people who already own Whoop 5.0 bands are buying up old 4.0 bands to get a bargain on the subscription price.

There have been a few posts on this, but perhaps the master of this hack is Redditor u/thelifeofcb, who found Whoop 4.0 bands, new in box, at a T. J. Maxx store for $39 each, and bought several. This allowed them to extend their existing subscription—they wear a Whoop 5.0—for several years at essentially a $200/year discount.

How the discount Whoop hack works

When new Whoop bands are sold through retailers, they come packaged with a one-year subscription. The idea is that you’ll create an account on the app, pair the band you bought through the app, and get credit for a 12-month subscription—since that was the main thing you paid for when you bought the band at full price.

Back in the Whoop 4.0 days, there was only one tier of membership. When tiers were introduced, those subscriptions rolled over to a Peak subscription, the one that currently goes for $239/year. That means a 4.0 device—however much you pay for it—can give you a year-long Peak subscription.

Redditors have found that pairing one of these new Whoop 4.0 devices added a year’s subscription to their accounts, whether they were a new customer or not. That means you can buy a few discount bands, pair them all, and enjoy several years’ worth of discounted membership. That $39 band is thus a $200 discount on each year’s membership. Some say that they received an offer to upgrade to a Whoop 5.0 band if they added two years’ worth of membership (paired two bands).

That $39 price is an unusually good one, but you can still get a significant discount anywhere new Whoop 4.0 devices are sold. For example, Amazon has 4.0 devices right now for $124, which is still about half the price of a Peak subscription. You can find them cheaper on eBay, but I’d be wary of buying a box that may have been opened. I’ll explain that below.

Scoring a cheap Whoop won’t always work, though

While Redditors say this works—and it does fit with my understanding of how subscriptions are paid for and claimed in the app—there are a few pitfalls to beware of.

The first is that this applies to new-in-box devices that (1) are sold with a subscription, and (2) have never been paired. The hack would not work with a hand-me-down device that has already been used, nor with a new one that has already been paired and its subscription claimed. For example, you can’t pass the same band to a friend and expect it to give both of you a subscription.

This means you have to be sure the band you buy has not been opened. If a store accepts returns of opened items, they may not realize that the valuable item here—the digital subscription—has already been claimed. If they put it back on the shelf, and you buy it, you’re out the purchase price and you still don’t have a subscription.

The other issue is just the e-waste that this causes. You’re buying a device just to throw it in the trash. But I’d argue that’s Whoop’s fault, not yours—those devices are obsolete and headed for the landfill (or responsible electronics recycling program, if you can find one) regardless of what you do.

2026 Fantasy Baseball Third Baseman Preview: Despite leading the position, should you avoid José Ramírez?

The third base position is going to give fantasy managers plenty of headaches this season. Outside of catcher, this is the weakest positional group, as there are no more than seven players who managers should be excited to have in their lineup.

Drafters will need to make tough choices when handling third base. Some managers may insist on filling the position early, even if that means that they need to reach a few picks during the initial rounds. The opposite approach is also viable — a manager could wait until the final rounds of their draft, knowing that there is plenty of risk in every third baseman who is ranked eighth or lower at the position.

There is also a lack of diversity within the skill sets at third base, which will be an issue for Roto managers. Aside from José Caballero, every third baseman who is being selected in the majority of leagues past pick 100 has limited speed and therefore draws all of his value from the power and/or batting average categories.

Optimists will see an opportunity to gain an advantage at third base. After all, the weak depth among this group means that managers who correctly determine a late-round sleeper will gain a massive advantage over their competitors.

Here are a few players to either target or avoid.

Garcia’s 2025 breakout season was well-supported by skill improvements. His strikeout rate (12.6%) and walk rate (9.3%) were career-best marks by a wide margin. Both his average exit velocity (91.3 mph) and barrel rate (5.6%) improved as well. By keeping most of his skill gains, the native Venezuelan could be even more effective this year, thanks to the changes to the outfield walls at Kauffman Stadium. And there is room for his steals total to rebound after it dropped by 14 last year.

Montgomery showed exciting power potential when he homered 21 times in 71 games during his rookie year. Sure, he isn’t likely to maintain a 45-homer pace during his first full season in the Majors, but he could regress significantly and still justify his current ADP. Montgomery produces oodles of pulled fly balls, which should keep the homers coming while he works on lowering the 29.2% strikeout rate from his rookie year.

This pick is controversial, as Ramírez is being selected as early as fifth overall in some drafts. I want to be clear that I have no issues with the 33-year-old’s skill set. He’s a legitimate superstar, although I expect some pullback after two consecutive 40-steal seasons. My main issue with drafting Ramírez is my massive distaste for a Guardians lineup that finished 28th in runs scored last year and failed to add significant help in the offseason. I want my Round 1 hitter to be part of an above-average offense.

While Chapman can be a solid accumulator at his position, he offers little more than the third basemen who rank behind him in ADP. The career .240 hitter will likely be a drain on the batting average category. His homer and RBI totals are more likely to be respectable than great, as he tries to overcome the power-suppressing nature of his home park. And although Chapman has swiped 24 bases in the past two seasons, he tallied 11 swipes in his previous seven campaigns and therefore cannot be considered a reliable base stealer for his age-33 season. There are more exciting options at other positions in his ADP range.

Barger was one of October’s best stories when he hit .367 with a 1.025 OPS during Toronto’s run to the brink of a World Series title. Unfortunately, the longer sample size from the regular season paints a less-exciting picture. Barger slumped in the second half (.679 OPS), and the lefty slugger struggled against southpaws (.607 OPS) throughout the season. On a deep Toronto roster, he’s likely to be a platoon player who leaves fantasy managers disappointed.

Want to wait for a third baseman? This is your guy. Polanco finally stayed healthy, which allowed him to rejuvenate his plate skills and hit .265 with 26 homers and 78 RBI last year. But a bounce-back season isn’t the biggest reason that the 32-year-old tops my sleepers list. By signing a two-year deal with the Mets, Polanco is suddenly locked into one of the best lineup spots in baseball, as his cleanup role behind Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Bo Bichette could lead to a 100-RBI season.

One of baseball’s most exciting prospects, Wetherholt has an excellent chance to make the Opening Day roster for the rebuilding Cardinals. And after hitting .306 with 17 homers and 23 steals in 109 minor league games last season, the seventh overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft has proven to have the versatile skill set that fantasy managers covet. Wetherholt is already a favorite for the NL Rookie of the Year award and could be one of this year’s best value picks by producing a 20-20 debut season.

Caballero is an especially good pick in standard Yahoo Roto leagues. After all, the waiver wire is usually fruitful in these contests, which means that managers can finish their drafts with players who have significant immediate value. Such is the case with Caballero, who should be the Yankees starting shortstop until Anthony Volpe returns from a season-opening IL stint. The speedster needed just 314 at-bats to lead the Majors with 49 steals last season, and he could single-handedly put fantasy teams ahead of the pack in swipes while holding a starting role in April.

During his best seasons, Correa was often on my “fades” list. After all, he was highly coveted in drafts despite spending significant time on the IL, stealing zero bases and having good-but-not-great contributions in other categories. But the hate for the 31-year-old has gone too far, as he is now going undrafted in most leagues despite having similar plate skills to his prime years and holding a premium spot in a solid lineup. As a last-round pick at a weak position, Correa could hold down the fort early in the season while his manager looks for breakout players on the waiver wire.
