Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard named All-Star Game reserve by Adam Silver

Kawhi Leonard was snubbed.

He deserved to be an All-Star — he has played like a top-10 player in the league this season, averaging a career-high 27.6 points per game, along with 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and a league-leading 2.1 steals per game. He’s missed fewer games this season than other All-Stars such as Nikola Jokic or Victor Wembanyama. The coaches screwed up by not voting him an All-Star reserve.

Adam Silver corrected that, naming Leonard to the All-Star Game in an announcement on Tuesday.

The reason was that 16 USA players were needed for this year’s USA vs. World format (more on that below), and there were just 15. It’s also a nice touch that the Clippers now have an All-Star for the game to be played on Feb. 15 in their home building, the Intuit Dome.

Here is how the All-Star Game players shake out in the USA vs. World format:

USA players: Stephen Curry (Warriors), Jalen Brunson (Knicks), Tyrese Maxey (76ers), Jaylen Brown (Celtics), Cade Cunningham (Pistons), Donovan Mitchell (Cavaliers), Jalen Johnson (Hawks), Norman Powell (Heat), Scottie Barnes (Raptors), Jalen Duren (Pistons), Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves), Chet Holmgren (Thunder), Kevin Durant (Rockets), Devin Booker (Suns), LeBron James (Lakers). Leonard has now been added to this group.

World players: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks, but he will miss the game with a calf strain), Luka Doncic (Lakers), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Thunder), Nikola Jokic (Nuggets), Victor Wembanyama (Spurs), Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Jamal Murray (Nuggets), Deni Avdija (Trail Blazers).

Leonard was asked about his All-Star snub after the Clippers ugly loss Monday night to the 76ers, and he was gracious. He said he always wants to be named and is honored because it’s a recognition of all the work he put in to reach this level, but that all the players who were named also were great players who put in the work, so he had no hard feelings.

Now he can just join them.

All-Star Game format

This year, the NBA All-Star Game returns to NBC and debuts on Peacock — and it falls right in the middle of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. That was a perfect setup for the first-of-its-kind All-Star Game format, a USA vs. World showdown that fans and players have been asking for.

The 24 All-Star players will be divided into three teams, two USA teams and one world team. Those three teams will compete in a round-robin tournament of four 12-minute games. Each of the three teams will have a minimum of eight players (if the USA or World teams are short on players, the league office will select one or more players to reach the required number).

At the end of the round-robin, the two top teams will play a championship game (the fourth 12-minute game of the day) for the title.

The 75th NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. Eastern, an earlier time than in previous years, leading into more coverage of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

How to watch NBA on NBC and Peacock:

Every moment of All-Star Weekend — the Rising Stars challenge on Friday. (Feb. 13), All-Star Saturday Night with the 3-Point Contest and Dunk Contest (Feb. 14), as well as the All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 15 — will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock.

The 75th NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. Eastern, a time earlier than in previous years, leading into more coverage of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

Peacock NBA Monday will stream up to three Monday night games each week throughout the regular season. Coast 2 Coast Tuesday presents doubleheaders on Tuesday nights throughout the regular season on NBC and Peacock. On most Tuesdays, an 8 p.m. ET game will be on NBC stations in the Eastern and Central time zones, and an 8 p.m. PT game on NBC stations in the Pacific and often Mountain time zones.

Lakers guard Austin Reaves to play tonight against the Nets

Lakers guard Austin Reaves, playing Dec. 10 against the Spurs, will make his return to the court tonight in Brooklyn after missing the last 19 games because of a strained left calf. (Gina Ferazzi / Los Angeles Times)

Austin Reaves, who missed the last 19 games because of a left calf strain, will play for the Lakers on Tuesday night against the Brooklyn Nets.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said Reaves will come off the bench and will have a minutes restrictions.

“Yeah, he’ll be in,” Redick said. “He’ll have a minutes restriction, but he’ll be in.”

Reaves has been out since injuring his calf on Christmas Day against the Houston Rockets.

In 23 games this season, Reaves is averaging career highs in points (26.6), assists (6.3) and rebounds (5.2). Reaves is shooting 50.7% from the field and 36.5% from three-point range.

“I think we’ve missed him in every facet,” Redick said of Reaves. “Both as an on-ball player, off-ball player, a connector, leadership on the court, competitive spirit — competitive spirit defensively. So, he’s an All-Star level player and, of course, you’re going to miss him in a number of ways.”

The most recent Lakers starting lineup had Jake LaRavia and Marcus Smart as starters alongside Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Deandre Ayton.

Redick was asked how the group has fared together.

“Yeah, I mean, that group has not performed well from a net rating, an offensive/defensive rating,” Redick said. “So, we’ve got to figure all this out. And we’ve had two games all season with our full health.

“So, hopefully, with Austin coming back, we can just have a healthy stretch here and figure out what lineups work best.”

Austin Reaves returns to Lakers against Nets after calf strain sidelined him since Christmas

NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Reaves will play for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night in Brooklyn after missing the last 19 games with a strained left calf.

Coach JJ Redick said Reaves would come off the bench and play restricted minutes in his first game since Christmas.

Redick said the Lakers have missed Reaves in every facet of the game.

“He’s an All-Star-level player and of course you’re going to miss him in a number of ways,” Redick said.

Reaves may have been an All-Star if not for his absences. He missed three games with the injury in December, then was in just his second game back when he was hurt again against Houston on Dec. 25.

Reaves is averaging 26.6 points, 6.3 assists and 5.2 rebounds. Redick said the Lakers have had their full complement of players only twice this season, and LeBron James said after they lost Sunday to the New York Knicks that Reaves’ absence made it difficult to evaluate the team’s potential.

“Unfortunately our All-Star 2-guard has been out for a minute and that’s a big piece of our team,” James said. “So it’s kind of hard to see what we can really, truly be.”

Austin Reaves returns to Lakers lineup from calf strain

The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to make any trade deadline moves, but they’re getting a big addition to their roster as they close out their eight-game road trip against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night.

Austin Reaves is set to return from a grade two calf strain, according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike. Head coach JJ Redick confirmed that Reaves will come off the bench and be on a minutes restriction to ease him back into the lineup. Nevertheless, Reaves intends to play for the first time since Dec. 25.

Here’s everything you need to know about his status ahead of tip-off:

Is Austin Reaves playing tonight vs. Nets?

Yes. As mentioned above, Reaves will play for the first time after missing 19 games due to a grade two calf strain and will be on a minutes restriction.

Two days ago, Reaves went through pregame warmups before the Lakers’ road game against the New York Knicks and was listed as a game time decision but was ultimately ruled out. Reaves again went through warmups on Tuesday and this time, he reportedly felt good enough to play.

Reaves had been inching closer towards a return over the past week, he was available for the first time since suffering his injury last Wednesday and had been listed as questionable in each of the Lakers’ three games since.

Austin Reaves stats

Reaves’ injury halted his momentum on what could’ve been his first All-Star season. Through 23 games, the fourth-year guard is posting career-high averages in points (26.6), rebounds (5.2) and assists (6.3) per game. He’s also averaging at least one steal per game for the second straight year.

Celtics adding Vucevic in trade with Bulls for Simons, AP source says

The Boston Celtics are adding some frontline depth for the playoff run, agreeing Tuesday to acquire Nikola Vucevic from the Chicago Bulls for guard Anfernee Simons, a person with knowledge of the pending trade said.

There is a package of second-round draft capital also involved in the trade, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal is still pending the required league approval.

The 35-year-old Vucevic is joining his fourth team after stints with Philadelphia, Orlando and the Bulls. He has averaged 16.9 points and 9.0 rebounds this season, roughly matching his career marks of 17.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

Simons was with the Celtics for just this season, after coming to Boston in the trade last summer that sent Jrue Holiday to Portland. He averaged 14.2 points this season for the Celtics, who entered Tuesday tied with New York for second in the Eastern Conference despite being without Jayson Tatum all season while he recovers from a torn Achilles.

The move will also lessen Boston’s tax bill considerably, from about $39 million to roughly $17 million. There are other financial flexibilities that the Celtics pick up as part of the deal as well, which could be turned into other moves.

Both players are set to be free agents this summer.

Knicks’ Miles McBride undergoes tests on sore ankle; team awaiting results: report

The Knicks are doing their due diligence in trying to figure out what’s ailing guard Miles McBride.

McBride is missing his fourth straight game due to a sore left ankle and the NY Post’s Stefan Bondy reports that the Knicks guard has undergone tests. The team is still awaiting the results of the exams.

The New York guard has missed time on two separate occasions due to his sore ankle. He first missed eight games after suffering a high ankle sprain back on Dec. 7. He made 15 appearances when he returned before missing this stretch of games due to his ankle soreness.

Knicks head coach Mike Brown said that McBride was dealing with soreness and did not suffer a setback, but the lingering pain was enough for the team to dig deeper.

In 35 games (14 starts) this season, McBride is averaging a career-high 12.9 points, 2.8 assists and a career best 42 percent shooting from three. His minutes this season have also seen an uptick, as he’s averaging 28 minutes on the court.

Lakers’ Austin Reaves returning from calf injury after missing 19 games

Austin Reaves will play for the Los Angeles Lakers in Tuesday’s matchup with the Brooklyn Nets, head coach JJ Redick announced.

Reaves, who has been sidelined with a Grade 2 left calf strain, hasn’t played for the Lakers since Christmas Day. Returning from a 19-game absence, he will come off the bench with a minutes restriction, Redick said.

“We’ve missed him in every facet,” said Redick, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin

Reaves had been listed as questionable on the NBA injury report before each of the Lakers’ past three games. After going through pregame warmups, he said he wanted to play against the Nets, according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike.

[Subscribe to Yahoo Sports NBA on YouTube]

Before his injury, Reaves had been averaging a career-high 26.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists in 23 games. He was shooting 37% on 170 3-point attempts.

Reaves, 27, sustained the injury during the second quarter of the Lakers’ Christmas Day 119-96 loss to the Houston Rockets. He did not return after halftime. A MRI revealed the Grade 2 strain and team officials said Reaves would be out for at least four weeks.

Prior to the injury versus Houston, the fifth-year guard missed three games with a Grade 1 strain in a different part of his left calf. Before facing the Rockets, Reaves returned to play against the Phoenix Suns and was under a minutes restriction for those two games.

Kawhi Leonard added to NBA All-Star roster by commissioner Adam Silver

Kawhi Leonard is an All-Star after all.

The NBA announced on Tuesday that commissioner Adam Silver had named Leonard an All-Star after he failed to make the cut for starters as voted on by fans, players and media, or for the reserves named by NBA head coaches

Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Silver added Leonard to the player pool to bring the number of U.S. All-Stars up to 16 for the new U.S. vs. the World All-Star game format. The format will feature two U.S. teams of eight players and a third international team that compete in a tournament-style format at the Feb. 15 All-Star game. Leonard will be part of the USA Stripes team, with full rosters announced Tuesday.

Leonard’s addition to the roster will also give the host Clippers an All-Star representative, as they did not have one before.

Kawhi Leonard is the only All-Star representative for the host Clippers at the Feb. 15 All-Star game.
ASSOCIATED PRESS

Leonard’s omission from the initial All-Star roster caused an uproar as the six-time All-NBA selection and two-time Finals MVP is in the midst of one of his best seasons.

Leonard is having the best scoring season of his career with 27.6 points per game. He’s tied for the league lead with 2.1 steals per game and is also averaging 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 0.6 blocks.

The Clippers got off to a 6-21 start, which may have played an impact in neither Leonard nor teammate James Harden making the initial cut. But they’ve gone 17-5 since that start to surge back into playoff contention in the Western Conference.

As usual, availability is an issue for Leonard. But he’s remained relatively healthy by his standards, having played in 36 of the Clippers’ 49 games as of Tuesday.
