James Harden is still struggling to dribble after broken thumb

DETROIT — The Cleveland Cavaliers will be shorthanded for Friday’s showdown against the Detroit Pistons. Their star-studed backcourt of Donovan Mitchell and James Harden will both be missing the game.

Harden broke his thumb in Tuesday’s win over the New York Knicks. Initial X-rays revealed a non-displaced fracture of the distal phalanx. He will not be undergoing surgery at this time and is expected to play through the injury.

However, that won’t be happening on Friday as he’s still struggling to dribble according to head coach Kenny Atkinson.

“I know this morning he was struggling a little just dribbling,” Atkinson said when asked about Harden’s thumb injury before Friday’s game in Detroit. “If you have a hard time dribbling and catching [it’s tough to play]. Jarrett Allen went through it earlier in the season. We tried to bring him back. He wanted to rush, and then we had to go back and give him some time.

“I know James is different…we got to get the feedback from James. … Theres no tougher guy in the league. No one more available. No one wants to play more.”

The plan was to have Harden go through pregame warmups and see how it goes. However, he didn’t come out for pregame warmups like usual.

Even though he won’t be playing Friday, Atkinson says that he is making progress.

“It was improved from when he first did it,” Atkinson said. “It wasn’t like, man it feels the same. It’s better than it was two days ago, so that’s a positive.

Harden has played seven games with the Cavs this season and is averaging 18.9 points and 8 assists on .494/.488/.867 shooting splits. On the season, he’s averaged 24.5 points and 8.1 assists in 51 games.

All eyes focused on Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza as QBs take center stage at NFL scouting combine

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza possesses all the traits NFL teams covet in a franchise quarterback.

He’s smart, mobile, makes fast reads and quick releases. He has a strong arm and prototypical size. He has three years of starting experience and a national championship, too.

But the once lightly recruited Mendoza learned long ago not to take anything for granted. So if the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in April ‘s draft fulfills those expectations, he’ll embrace the pressure to succeed. And if the quarterback-needy Las Vegas Raiders bypass Mendoza, the former Indiana star won’t fret. Instead, the Boston-born Mendoza hopes to steal a page from one of his favorite player’s game plans.

“Whatever team drafts me, I’m grateful — whether it’s the No. 1 pick or whether it’s the 199th pick,” Mendoza said, denoting the very spot Raiders part owner and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady was selected in the 2000 draft.

Nobody, of course, anticipates Mendoza sliding that far, though stranger things have happened.

Carson Beck began the 2024 season as the favorite to go No. 1 then suffered a late-season elbow injury that required surgery and forced his transfer from Georgia to Miami. When the league’s annual scouting combine rolled around last February, Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward seemed positioned to go at the top. Ward won that battle, going to Tennessee at No. 1, while Sanders had to wait until Cleveland finally took him at No. 144.

This year, though, there seems to be no serious debate. Mendoza is clearly at the head of this class.

He’s reaping the benefits. Mendoza recently spent time with two-time Super Bowl-winning brothers Peyton and Eli Manning, as well as Daniel Jones, last season’s Colts starter. He even spoke briefly on the phone with Brady during a recent interview with Raiders brass.

And everywhere he went Friday, cameras followed — from the phones popping up at his podium to the subsequent television rounds he made inside the media room to those filming Mendoza strolling the hallways inside the Indiana Convention Center. He does not plan to throw Saturday night because Indiana’s 16-game season left him with less time to prepare for the combine than other players. He does intend to throw April 1 at his Pro Day.

“It’s been hectic,” Mendoza said. “A lot of our teammates were joking we played the natty on Jan. 19, and Jan. 23 we had three days of celebrating with a parade. Then it was all off to training. Everybody was going to Miami, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago to go train. That process of being dispersed so quickly shows why you need to be enabled in the present moment, how much it matters to be in the present moment and how much you’ve got to really enjoy the good times while they last.”

Some of the quarterbacks in this group understand what Mendoza means.

Beck spent last spring and summer rehabbing in an effort to prove he could regain his pre-injury throwing form. The result: He led Miami to the national championship game in their home stadium, rebuilt his draft stock and now hopes to prove he could be a first-round pick.

“You look at the beginning of the 2024 season, going into it, nobody envisioned that season to go that way, starting with myself,” Beck said. “I didn’t know I was going to get injured at the end of the season. I didn’t know I was going to end up coming back to college for another year. That was never the plan, right? So when the injury happened, I had declared for the draft. I was going to go through the process and from that point, I’m gone. It’s like ‘OK, Gunner (Stockton) is next up.’ So when I decided to not go to the NFL, it was like, ‘I’m going to go somewhere else.’”

Drew Allar is facing a similar comeback attempt albeit on an expedited schedule.

He returned to Penn State last fall rather than turning pro to pursue a national championship. Nothing went right. The top-ranked team in The Associated Press preseason poll faltered early and the season unraveled quickly, leading to the midseason firing of coach James Franklin.

Then in mid-October, Allar suffered a broken left ankle that required season-ending surgery. Now, he’s trying to show NFL scouts he’s healthy.

“As soon as I really got back to school and started my rehab process my whole focus has been getting to this point, being healthy enough to have the chance to put myself out there and throw,” Allar said. “So I am really excited to go out there on Saturday and just cut it loose.”

Allar plans to throw — not run.

For Mendoza, this is a different kind of stage. Here, he’s trying to show dozens of teams he’s got what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Brady and become some team’s long-term solution at quarterback. First, though, he wants to win the job.

“Right now, I’m unemployed,” he said. “So this is my job interview and like everyone says, it’s the most important job interview of your life. So right now, I’m just trying to do everything to hopefully get employed.”

Nuggets vs Thunder Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

Want to get more Covers content? Add us as a preferred source on your Google account here.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is expected to return for the Oklahoma City Thunder when they host the Denver Nuggets tonight.

The reigning MVP is no longer on the injury report after missing nine games with an abdominal strain. The question now is how much SGA will actually play.

My Nuggets vs. Thunder predictions and NBA picks are taking a measured approach to the reigning MVP’s output on Friday, February 27.

Tip-off is set for 9:30 p.m. ET from the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, with the game airing on ESPN.

Nuggets vs Thunder prediction

Nuggets vs Thunder best bet: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Under 28.5 points (-115)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hasn’t played since February 3, with the Oklahoma City Thunder going 5-4 SU in his absence, allowing the surging San Antonio Spurs to close the gap in the West.

SGA’s return is a major boost for OKC, but preserving his health is the top priority. He not only needs to meet the MVP qualifying threshold, but the Thunder have only a 1.5-game lead atop the conference.

While a full workload could yield 30+ points, most models range from 18.4 to 23.7 points if his minutes are capped. I expect OKC to play it safe against the Denver Nuggets tonight.

Nuggets vs Thunder same-game parlay

The Nuggets reminded the league they’re still a contender by blasting the Boston Celtics earlier this week, showing they rise to the challenge against the NBA’s elite.

After missing nine games, OKC will protect the MVP in his first outing back, and he’s unlikely to reach that scoring total.

With SGA limited, Chet Holmgren drew more defensive attention, and his numbers dipped. Even with Shai seeing reduced minutes, the 7-footer will benefit from extra space, with models projecting him for 20+ points tonight.

Nuggets vs Thunder SGP

  • Nuggets +8
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Under 28.5 points
  • Chet Holmgren Over 16.5 points

Our “from downtown” SGP: Calling on Cam

Cameron Johnson has looked great since returning from a six-week absence (knee bruise), averaging almost 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists in the last seven games.

Johnson’s player projections all sit north of these prop totals tonight.

Nuggets vs Thunder SGP

  • Nuggets moneyline
  • Cameron Johnson Over 12.5 points
  • Cameron Johnson Over 3.5 rebounds
  • Cameron Johnson Over 1.5 assists

Nuggets vs Thunder odds

  • Spread: Nuggets +8 (-110) | Thunder -8 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Nuggets +250 | Thunder -310
  • Over/Under: Over 233.5 (-110) | Under 233.5 (-110)

Nuggets vs Thunder betting trend to know

The Nuggets are 38-25-1 ATS as underdogs over the past three years, including a 12-6 ATS mark when catching points this season. Find more NBA betting trends for Nuggets vs. Thunder.

Kings’ Keegan Murray out for at least 2 weeks after aggravating sprained ankle

Keegan Murray’s season might be over, giving him an early end to what’s been a terrible 2025-26 campaign for the Sacramento Kings.

The team announced Friday that Murray will be out for at least two weeks with a “mild” ankle sprain revealed by an MRI and will be re-evaluated after that period. With 21 games remaining in the regular season and the Kings carrying the NBA’s worst record at 14-47, it’s worth asking whether or not Murray will eventually be shut down.

Murray, 25, has slogged through a particularly difficult season, appearing in only 23 games while struggling through calf and back injuries, a torn UCL in his left thumb (sidelining him for 15 games) and a left ankle sprain. That ankle sprain kept Murray out for 20 games until he returned last week.

The fourth-year star made it through three full games before he aggravated the injury Wednesday versus the Houston Rockets. Jumping up to contest a shot by Clint Capela, Murray landed awkwardly on his left leg and subsequently left the game after playing only nine minutes.

Murray was one of four players who didn’t play in Thursday’s 130-121 win over the Dallas Mavericks. Zach LaVine (torn tendon, finger), Domantas Sabonis (torn meniscus, knee) and De’Andre Hunter (detached retina) have each undergone season-ending surgery. Russell Westbrook is day-to-day with a right thigh contusion and Malik Monk has been dealing with a sore right ankle (though he played versus Dallas).

[Watch Yahoo Sports Network]

In his 23 games, Murray scored 14 points per game, the second-highest average of his career, with 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists. However, his 27% shooting on 3-pointers is the lowest of his four seasons.

Before winning two of their past three games, the Kings had lost a franchise-record 16 consecutive games. That leaves them with the NBA’s worst record and one of the teams holding the best odds (14%) to win the NBA Draft Lottery, joining the Brooklyn Nets and Indiana Pacers.

Murray, under contract through the 2030-31 season after signing a five-year, $140 million contract extension in October, will presumably be one of the key pieces in a Kings rebuild along with whichever prospect the team selects.

In an unfortunate bit of timing, Murray’s status was announced a day after his rookie record for 3-pointers in a season was broken by the Charlotte Hornets’ Kon Knueppel

Espí late show gives Levante priceless win over Alaves

VITORIA-GASTEIZ, Spain (AP) — Carlos Espí scored twice in the dying minutes to give Levante a 2-0 win over Alaves on Friday and a vital three points in its fight to avoid relegation from La Liga.

Espí, who came through the youth ranks at the Valencia-based club, had scored only once all season but tripled his tally with a blistering late show against an Alaves side that played the last half hour with 10 men after Víctor Parada was sent off.

Espí’s deflected shot in the 88th minute put Levante ahead and he then sparked jubilant scenes with almost the last kick of the game when his assured finish rounded off a counterattack.

“This has been one of my greatest nights,” the 20-year old told broadcaster DAZN. “It’s incredible.”

The result snapped a four-game losing streak for the home side. It remained second from bottom of La Liga but has cut the gap with the fourth bottom club to four points.

Alaves was 14th but only three points clear of the relegation zone.

Cincinnati’s Cactus League win streak ends in the arms of the Angels

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Michael Toglia (48) and infielder Leo Balcazar (85) celebrate a 5-4 win against the Kansas City Royals, Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Ariz. | Frank Bowen IV/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The Los Angeles Mike Trouts of Anaheim sent the Cincinnati Reds to their showers with a 4-3 defeat on Friday at Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona. The Reds had been riding a 3-game win streak heading into this game, which did not feature Mike Trout even though I insinuated that it did with a misleading nickname in the very first words of this article.

The Good

Rhett Lowder was simply brilliant as the starter for the Reds today. He fired a trio of scoreless, hitless innings in his second outing of the spring, walking a lone Angel while fanning three. Safe to say his quest to earn the 5th spot in Cincinnati’s starting rotation is off to a pretty, pretty good start.

Meanwhile, Blake Dunn swatted a solo homer, Jose Trevino had a pair of hits and a ribbie, and Rece Hinds tripled, walked, and scored while playing CF on the afternoon. In a similarly positive vein, JJ Bleday continued his hot-hitting start to Cactus League play with another 2 for 3 day (with a run scored).

The Bad

Sal Stewart was actually retired twice on the day, which is bad for him. Just one hit, Sal? That’s all ya had in ya today, superstar?!

I’ve really got to find a better format for these spring recaps.

The Ugly

It was not the finest day for Julian Aguiar in his quest to earn a spot on the team’s pitching staff. Taking over for Lowder in the Top of the 4th, he was tagged for a homer by Logan O’Hoppe of the 2-run variety, and Aguiar eventually yielded 3 ER on 4 H in his 2.0 IP of work.

He didn’t walk anybody, which is a good thing.

Yunior Marte surrendered the other run on the day.

What’s Next

You aren’t going to believe this, but Saturday will feature Cincinnati Reds baseball that’s watchable on your screens!

The Reds will head to American Family Fields of Phoenix to face off against the Milwaukee Brewers, and it’s dawning on me that place was way cooler when it was just called ‘Maryvale.’ Anyway, it’s a 3:05 PM ET start time and MLB.tv and Reds.tv (if you’re in-market) will have the stream with the Reds broadcast. If you’re into the Brewers version of calling baseball games, their own broadcast will be viewable via MLB.tv (or Brewers.tv if you happen to be a Reds fan in the Milwaukee region).

Hunter Greene will toe the rubber for Cincinnati, and given who sat out today – Elly De La Cruz & Co. – I’d expect a pretty loaded lineup from the Reds side tomorrow. Rob Zastryzny, a lefty, will start for the Beers though, so Terry Francona could get experimental with his lineup again tomorrow the same way he did today against lefty Brent Suter to start.

Split decisions: White Sox beat Rangers, fall to Brewers

Chase Meidroth sparkplugged his way on base in three different ways in Phoenix today. | Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

The White Sox gave us two games today, with the 100 or so players eligible for the games today split in half. Given that Gameday and radio was the best we could tune into for two simultaneous games, let’s just bullet-point some game performances, and let our game polls tell the rest of the story.

In the interest of good news before bad news, the White Sox won at Camelback against the Rangers, 3-1. Erick Fedde started and pretty well thrived, tossing 29 pitches over two scoreless innings, with two Ks and a walk. Mike Vasil was the third pitcher up, and qualifies as the “bulk” arm of the game with three innings and one earned. There is almost no way Vasil isn’t being considered as a swingman or fifth-starter contender based on this outing, which just eight games in is the longest of this Cactus League for the Sox. Brandon Eisert continued his run at the closer role (jk) with his third scoreless outing and fifth and sixth Ks of the spring.

On the hitting side, just enough got done for the win. Miguel Vargas led off and pocketed two hits, including a double. All three White Sox runs were bunched in the fifth, courtesy of a two-run bomb from LaMonte Wade Jr. and some run manufacturing from Sam Antonacci and Darren Baker.

Want to see Lamonte’s home run? Well sorry, it’s MLB Spring Training, you can’t. But if you stare deeply enough into the black perhaps you can hallucinate the footage:

Over in Phoenix facing the Brewers, things were not so sweet, as the White Sox fell, 5-2. Three Arms of the Future threw, none of them to great effect. Sean Burke started but surrendered two earned over three innings (OK, Vasil, you’re not special, everyone’s throwing three now). Tanner McDougal, who once again lit up the radar gun in touching 100 mph but throwing that heat straight into bats for loud contact, did same. Noah Schultz came on to finish things off with two innings, and may well have had the best outing of all, but three singles in the seventh (one on the infield, two sharp slaps through it) touched the giant for an earned run.

Was it disastrous for the arms? Not at all. But these three need to develop some better movement or sequencing into March.

Outside of Hitting Machine Edgar Quero (2-for-3, 2B, both RBIs), there was not much offensively to write home about.

The White Sox drop to 5-4 overall and head to Goodyear to face off against Cleveland tomorrow. It’s a CHSN and WMVP game, with Shane Smith starting the game.
