In addition to announcing its spring training broadcast schedule, SportsNet LA on Tuesday announced the bulk of its broadcast plans for the regular season in 2026.

With the Dodgers’ opening day battle against the Arizona Diamondbacks exclusively televised by NBC and streamed on Peacock, the first regular season game for SportsNet LA will be Friday, March 27, the second game of the season. That’s also the night of the championship ring ceremony before the game, which will be part of the SportsNet LA broadcast. For that March 27 broadcast, the pre-game Access SportsNet: Dodgers will be expanded to run for 90 minutes, beginning at 5:30 p.m. PT.

The full exclusive national broadcast schedule for the season hasn’t yet been revealed. Apple TV+ hasn’t yet announced its first half schedule, and usually unveiled each successive month during the season. There are also a few other weeknight ESPN games that haven’t yet been finalized. Last year there were 17 Dodgers games exclusively on national television, leaving 145 for SportsNet LA. In 2024, the split was 16 national games and 146 SportsNet LA contests. Expect a similar number for this season.

Joe Davis and Stephen Nelson will handle the regular season play-by-play duties on SportsNet LA. The split of games hasn’t been revealed, but Davis — who is also the lead national MLB announcer for Fox Sports — has called 87 games for SportsNet LA in each of the last three years.

Orel Hershiser is back as the lead television analyst, in his 11th season calling Dodgers games. Eric Karros and Jessica Mendoza will also continue to call games on SportsNet LA.

Of news this year is the return of Dontrelle Willis to the booth as a game analyst for SportsNet LA, which he did from 2022-23 as well. Willis, who also works nationally as a Fox Sports studio analyst and Apple TV+ game analyst, was hired by the Dodgers to broadcast in 2022 and has been a studio analyst in each of his first four seasons, and will do the same in addition to calling some games as well in 2026. Three years ago, Willis called 12 games for SportsNet LA.

Other studio analysts for SportsNet LA this season are all returning faces — Nomar Garciaparra, Adrián González, Jerry Hairston Jr., Orel Hershiser, and James Loney — along with host John Hartung.

Game reporter Kirsten Watson is back for her sixth season on SportsNet LA, which also includes studio programming. David Vassegh will occasionally fill in as field reporter for some television broadcasts, as he has in years past, cast or not.

Judge grants hearing, expresses concerns ex-Michigan coach Moore may have had rights violated

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A judge on Tuesday granted a request for a hearing to learn more about an investigation that led to charges against former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore, who was arrested soon after he was fired for a relationship with his executive assistant.

It’s a victory for Moore and lawyer Ellen Michaels who is defending him against charges of felony home invasion, stalking and illegal entry. They ultimately want the case dismissed.

Moore, 40, is accused of entering the woman’s apartment without permission and threatening to kill himself in front of her on Dec. 10. Authorities quoted him as saying she was to blame for him losing one of the top college football jobs in the country. She had spoken to university officials.

Judge J. Cedric Simpson expressed concern that a police detective didn’t disclose Moore’s employer-employee relationship with the woman — a “glaring omission” — when a magistrate authorized a warrant for his arrest.

“Defendant’s due process may have been violated,” Simpson said.

“This was not solely this personal relationship. The magistrate should have been able to look at that,” said the judge, who set a March 2 hearing to hear from police and other witnesses.

The woman ended the personal relationship a few days before Moore’s firing and did not answer a dozen calls or respond to some text messages from him before his dismissal, police said.

Michaels said a coach calling and texting an executive assistant that many times was reasonable while Moore was preparing his team for a bowl game.

“It’s not stalking if the communication has a legitimate purpose,” Michaels said.

Before Simpson set the hearing, Washtenaw County assistant prosecutor Kati Rezmierski said it wasn’t necessary and would be outside the judge’s discretion.

Moore coached the Wolverines for two seasons as the successor to Jim Harbaugh, who won a national championship before quitting to become coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Kyle Whittingham, who coached Utah for two decades, is Michigan’s new coach.

Michaels accused the woman’s personal lawyer of giving information to police to “villainize Mr. Moore and maximize the chances of obtaining a large settlement from the deep pockets of the University of Michigan.”

Madrid game at Benfica halted for several minutes as Vinícius says opponent racially insulted him

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior accused an opponent of racially insulting him during Tuesday’s Champions League game against Benfica, leading to the game being halted for nearly 10 minutes amid angry scenes at the Stadium of Light.

Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold called the incident “a disgrace to football” while Benfica manager Jose Mourinho said Vinícius had incited his players and fans by the way he celebrated his goal in the 1-0 win for Madrid.

Vinícius had just curled in a shot into the top corner when French referee François Letexier had to stop the match in the 52nd minute, making a signal with his arms to show that an accusation of racism had been made.

Benfica fans had reacted angrily to Vinícius celebrating his goal by dancing by the corner flag, throwing bottles and other objects toward the Madrid players. Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni then confronted Vinícius and said something while covering his mouth with his jersey.

The Brazil forward then suddenly pointed to his Argentine opponent and ran toward the referee.

Cameras picked up Vinícius telling Letexier that Prestianni called him “monkey.”

After the match, Vinícius posted a photo on Instagram of him celebrating by the Benfica corner flag. He wrote: “Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to cover their mouths with their shirts to show how they are weak. … Nothing that happened today is new to me in my life and in my family’s life. I was shown a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t know why.”

When Vinícius made his complaint, the referee immediately stopped the match and crossed his arms above his head to start the anti-racism protocol. Vinícius, who is Black and has been repeatedly subjected to racist abuse in Spain, went to the sideline and sat in the dugout while play was stopped. Some of his teammates also started to walk toward the sideline.

Mbappé and midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni said the team considered leaving the field but eventually decided to continue playing. Mbappé said he asked Vinícius to see what he wanted to do.

“What’s happened tonight is a disgrace to football,” Alexander-Arnold said after the game. “It’s overshadowed the performance, especially after such an amazing goal. Vini has been subjected to this a few times throughout his career, and for it to happen tonight and ruin the night for us as a team is a disgrace. There’s no place for it in football or society. It’s disgusting.”

The 20-year-old Prestianni just looked on from afar as Vinícius talked to the referee.

“The players who were near said that (Prestianni) said something ugly, that shouldn’t be said,” Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde said. “If you cover your mouth to say something it’s because you are saying something that is not nice. I’m proud of my teammates who defended Vini and of Vini.”

Benfica players said Prestianni told them that he provoked Vinícius but never used any racist insult.

“I asked him and he said it was a normal provocation between players during a match,” Benfica midfielder Leandro Barreiro said. “He said it was nothing racist.”

Both coaches, Benfica’s Mourinho and Madrid’s Álvaro Arbeloa, talked to Vinícius near the benches.

Mourinho said he did not want to say he believed one player over the other after talking to both, but criticized Vinícius for celebrating near the fans.

“Unfortunately he was not just happy to score that astonishing goal,” Mourinho told Amazon Prime. “When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way.”

Mourinho said he told Vinícius that the greatest player in Benfica’s history — Eusébio — was black, but seemed to question why the Real Madrid player is so frequently targeted by racist abuse.

“There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium,” Mourinho said. “The stadium where Vinicius played something happened. Always.”

The referee appeared to show that he did not hear anything and gestured that Prestianni had the shirt over his mouth.

The Argentine player was not shown a yellow card and continued playing. He was substituted in the 81st and was applauded by Benfica fans.

The game restarted in the 60th and Vinícius was jeered loudly by the home crowd during the rest of the match.

He was hit by the bottle in the final minutes while near the sidelines in front of Benfica fans. The referee asked for an announcement to be made through the stadium’s loudspeakers to warn fans not to through objects onto the field.

Mbappé, who was defending Vinícius while Benfica players confronted his teammate, was also jeered by Benfica supporters. Cameras also showed Mbappé apparently telling Prestianni that he was a racist, along with expletives.

“We can’t accept that a player who plays in Europe’s top competition behaves like that,” Mbappé said. “He shouldn’t keep playing in the competition. Let’s see what happens now.”

The Brazilian soccer confederation showed solidarity with Vinícius, saying in an X post that he was “not alone” and that “racism is a crime” and has “no place in soccer anywhere.” It called Vinícius’ decision to complain to the referee ”an example of courage and dignity. We are proud of you.”

Mourinho sent off

Mourinho, a former Madrid coach, was shown a red card in the 86th for complaining to the referee.

He said the he referee was not awarding yellow cards to the Madrid players as he should have, hinting that it was because they would miss the next game because of an accumulation of cards.

Update Chrome ASAP to Patch This High-Severity Security Flaw

If you use Google Chrome, you should install the latest update ASAP. Google has issued a patch for a high-severity flaw that has been actively exploited in the wild—the first Chrome zero-day in 2026.

What the Google Chrome patch fixes

The latest flaw, catalogued as CVE-2026-2441, is a use-after-free vulnerability in CSSFontFeatureValuesMap, Chrome’s CSS font feature implementation. A use-after-free vulnerability is a flaw in which an application attempts to use memory after it has been released back to the system. This type of bug allows attackers to execute code, escalate privileges, cause app or system crashes, and leak sensitive data.

CVE-2026-2441 would allow “a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside a sandbox via a crafted HTML page.” Essentially, this means malicious HTML content could run code inside a Chrome tab, extension, or plugin. As Malwarebytes explains, this is dangerous because attackers can see or modify whatever the isolated browser tab (sandbox) can access, allowing actions like credential harvesting and traffic rerouting—even if it cannot escape to impact the whole operating system.

Google said that this vulnerability has been exploited in the wild but hasn’t provided any specific details as to how. The discovery has been attributed to Shaheen Fazim.

What Chrome users need to do

Google released a Stable channel update on Feb. 13 with a patch for this flaw. The latest versions of Chrome are 145.0.7632.75/76 for Windows and macOS and 144.0.7559.75 for Linux, so you’ll want to ensure you are up to date. Go to the Chrome menu and select About Google Chrome to check which version you’re on.

Chrome updates automatically when you close and reopen the browser, but if you don’t do that regularly, keep an eye out for pending updates in the top-right corner of your browser window. Apply these updates immediately by tapping the three dots and selecting the first menu item. Chrome will need to restart to complete the update.

The Best Last-Minute Tech Deals From Amazon’s Presidents Day Sale

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

Presidents Day is technically behind us, but as is often the case, there are still plenty of last-minute sales available. Amazon’s sale features some notable deals on tech products like smartwatches, headphones, home appliances, speakers, and more. I’ve gathered the best of Amazon’s sale below, which features a few all-time low prices, according to price-checking tools.

The Razer Kishi Ultra gaming controller is 53% off

Serious phone gamers likely already know about Razer’s Kishi Ultra. This gaming controller for phones and iPads is built to take your gaming on your phone to the next level, and it’s currently $69.99 (originally $149.99) on Amazon, the lowest price to date. It fits most phones, even with cases, and can expand wide enough to hold an iPad mini, which gives it more range than controllers built only for phones.

The Nothing Smartwatch with ChatGPT is $45

Last summer, Nothing released its newest smartwatch, the CMF Watch 3 Pro, which incorporates AI features powered by ChatGPT, and you can currently pick it up at a major discount. Originally $99, you can get the CMF Watch 3 Pro for $44.99 at Woot—a 65% discount. The catch is that it’s only available at that price in the light green color.

This Sony soundbar is over 50% off

The Sony HT-Z9F is down to $419.99 on Woot (originally $899.99). It’s a 3.1-channel soundbar, meaning it has left, right, and center speakers built in, plus a wireless subwoofer. The center channel is used for dialogue, which makes those whispering lines in movies much easier to decipher. The wireless sub will give you that punchy feel when explosions go off, or you want to listen to some bass-heavy hits. A premium experience for less than half the price.

A 20,000mAh Power Bank from Anker for $80

I love power banks, and they’ve saved my phone (and therefore, my life) many times. If you’ve never used a 20,00mAh with 200W power bank before, it’s a game-changer. It charges phones very fast and can do it multiple times before needing to be recharged. The Anker Prime Power Bank is exactly that, and it’s $79.99 (originally $139.99) on Woot.

The Beats Powerbeats Pro is $115 off

The Beats Powerbeats Pro are $134.95 (originally $249.95) on Woot and you can use code CNN2025 at checkout to take an extra $5 off. These are the classic Beats earbuds for working out, with an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance, a secure seal, and an over-ear hook to stay put.

Google’s Pixel Watch 3 drops to $171

The wifi-only 45mm Google Pixel Watch 3 is on sale for $170.67 (originally $299.99) after a $129 discount, the lowest price it has ever been. It offers a ton of fitness metrics, including recovery and running dynamics that are perfect for casual fitness, according to Lifehacker senior health editor Beth Skwarecki’s review.

My favorite smart lock drops to $93

The SwitchBot WiFi Smart Lock Pro is my favorite smart lock that I use in my home. Right now, you can get the bundle that has everything you need (it comes with the smart lock, keypad, and hub to control it remotely) for just $92.99 (originally $199.99 at launch). Don’t let the $99.99 list price on Amazon fool you; this is a $107 discount that doesn’t happen very often.

A 57-inch curved Samsung gaming monitor for $800 off

The 57-inch Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, one of the best ultra-wide gaming monitors on the market, is currently on sale for $1,499.99 (originally $2,499.99 at launch). This monitor came out in 2023 with an “excellent” review from PCMag, mainly due to its impressive 7,680 by 2,160 4K native resolution, the ridiculous 57-inch screen size, its great color range and accuracy, the 240Hz refresh rate, and its design.

The Amazon Echo Show 11 gets its first $40 discount

Amazon released the Amazon Echo Show 11 last year to replace the 3rd Generation Echo Show 10. The upgraded home hub and smart speaker hybrid features a larger, sharper display; a separate static screen, Alexa+ capabilities, and other updates, and right now, it’s at its lowest price since launch. You can get it for $179.99, down $40 from the usual price, and its lowest price ever.

The Bose Ultra Open earbuds are $100 off

The Bose Ultra Open earbuds cater to people who prefer awareness over isolation. Think cyclists, runners, or anyone who doesn’t want to miss the honk of a car while listening to music. Instead of sealing you off from the world, they sit outside your ears, letting in ambient sound while still delivering rich, detailed audio. Priced at $199 (down from its original $299), this is their lowest price yet.

Presidents Day FAQ

When is Presidents Day 2026?

Presidents Day is a federal holiday that originally started to honor George Washington’s birthday, but eventually evolved to recognize all U.S. presidents. Presidents Day falls on the third Monday of February each year, which means this year, it takes place on Feb. 16, 2026.

Presidents Day sales, then, are usually concentrated on the weekend before the holiday, which means that this year, you’re likely to see the biggest discounts from Feb. 13–16. However, there are still deals you can find after the holiday.

What should you buy during Presidents Day sales this year?

Presidents Day sales generally bring big discounts to items like home furnishings and mattresses, as well as major appliances like refrigerators and washing machines, and you can expect the same this year. As we’re getting close to the end of winter, you’ll likely also see price drops on winter gear like snow blowers, space heathers, and power generators, plus cold weather clothing like coats, as retailers try to sell down their inventory and make room for next season’s items.

You’ll likely see some tech deals as well, as older model TVs and laptops will see price cuts to make room for newer models (some of which likely debuted at January’s CES show). If you’re planning to shop in one of these categories, start paying attention to prices now, so you’ll be able to spot good discounts come the holiday weekend.

What items aren’t worth buying during Presidents Day sales?

Seasons come and go, and even as retailers push their winter inventory out, they will try to sell you their spring products. You should hold off on picking these items up for now, as you’ll likely be paying a premium price—even items that are “marked down” are likely to see bigger price cuts later, if you can wait.

Who will be holding Presidents Day sales?

All major retailers will be having a Presidents Day sale, including Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and others. The sales will generally be available both online and in-person (except at Amazon, of course).

Should you wait for Amazon’s Big Spring Sale?

Presidents Day is a time-honored tradition, but in recent years, the biggest sale of the early part of the year has been Amazon’s Big Spring Sale (with other retailers planning their own sales events around the same time). While we don’t know the exact dates, it’s likely this year’s will take place around the same time as last year—in mid- to late March. Is it worth waiting to shop until then? It depends on what you want to buy.

The online retailer debuted the Big Spring Sale in 2024 with many sales on many different categories, but especially on tech, so if you’re eyeing a specific tech product but haven’t found a great deal yet, it’s worth waiting to see if it is discounted in a month or so. However, if you’re shopping for winter gear, mattresses, furniture, or large appliances, you’ll likely see better discounts during Presidents Day sales.

This Ultra-Wide Curved Gaming Monitor Is Still $200 for Presidents Day

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

Last-minute Presidents’ Day sales are the perfect time to stock up on gaming monitors that normally have a much higher price tag, and right now, an award-winning model from Alienware (dubbed “one of the best curved gaming monitors on the market” by PCMag) is $200 off. The Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor is 28% off at $499.99 (originally $699.99), marking its lowest price ever as the holiday discounts wind down.

This Alienware monitor, which earned a PCMag Editor’s Choice Award, sits on a sturdy V-shaped stand and has a curved 34-inch monitor with a 3440 by 1440 resolution and a 21:9 aspect ratio. Its curve isn’t as pronounced as some gaming monitors, such as the Corsair Xeneon Flex’s 800R curve; this one is 1800R, which reduces glare while deepening blacks and is ideal for those who don’t want overly dramatic curvature. It also features Alienvision, which lets you switch between four visual modes to tweak settings and maximize gameplay.

Brightness is rated up to 1000 nits, and with a 165Hz refresh rate (10Hz less than its predecessor, but still excellent) and a competitive input lag of 1.4ms, it’s a popular choice for gamers seeking an immersive experience. Compared to its predecessor, this model swaps Nvidia G-Sync for AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro. QD-OLED picture quality is this monitor’s main draw, giving users impressive contrast, true blacks, and dazzling colors for HDR gaming and strong performance in darker rooms. That said, it doesn’t have an HDMI 2.1 port.

For anyone seeking a sleek OLED monitor that’s not excessively curved, with top-tier picture quality in both SDR and HDR, vibrant colors, and low input lag,  the Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED Gaming Monitor remains one of the best ultrawide gaming and media monitors on the market. And at almost 30% off in a last-minute President’s Day deal, this Amazon deal might not last long.

Tiger Woods isn’t ruling out a return to the Masters. Ryder Cup captaincy also uncertain

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods did not rule out a return to the Masters just under two months away, even as his immediate future appears to include just about everything but golf.

Woods again painted an uncertain future about when or where he plays next because of a seventh back surgery to replace a disk. He said Tuesday at the Genesis Invitational that he remains plenty occupied, mostly with trying to reshape the PGA Tour schedule.

“I thought I spent a lot of hours practicing in my prime,” Woods said. “It doesn’t compare to what we’ve done in the boardroom.”

Those hours also are an obstacle in his decision whether to be the U.S. captain for the Ryder Cup for the 2027 matches in Ireland. Woods turned down the job two years ago because he didn’t think he had the time to do the job justice.

Foremost this time of the year is the Masters, which Woods last played in 2024 when he made the cut for a record 24th time in a row. Woods is a five-time Masters champion.

Asked if playing the Masters, which starts April 9, was off the table, Woods replied without elaboration, “No.”

As for his golf anywhere — he turned 50 at the end of last year and is eligible for the PGA Tour Champions — Woods said he is still working his way back from the disk replacement surgery in October and has no timetable for a return. He has yet to play in the indoor TGL matches, either.

“Well, I’m trying — put it that way,” he said, adding that he can hit full shots but not every day “and not very well.”

Last year was the first time in his career he did not compete in a single tournament. He had surgery in March 2025 for a ruptured Achilles tendon, which is no longer holding him back. He said his lower back was sore, and at his age, “It’s probably going to take me a little bit longer.”

“My body has been through a lot,” Woods said. “Each and every day, I keep trying, I keep progressing, I keep working on it, trying to get stronger, trying to get more endurance in this body and trying to get it at a level at which I can play at the highest level again.”

His chief interest is indoors. He is on the board of the PGA Tour and the commercial PGA Tour Enterprises, heading the “Future Competition Committee” that is trying to create a model to meet CEO Brian Rolapp’s goal of fewer tournaments that are more meaningful for the best players.

The only thing clear is that a new model most likely won’t be ready by 2027. The committee has reached agreement on a big start to the season — that could be the week after or before the Super Bowl — taking the big events to bigger markets and becoming the must-see sport of the summer.

Another players-only meeting was scheduled Tuesday at Riviera. Rolapp is expected to pull back the curtain on some aspects at The Players Championship in March, with a little more clarity expected in the summer.

Among items under consideration is moving some prime California stops — Riviera and Torrey Pines get most of the attention — to August as part of the PGA Tour’s postseason.

“We’re looking at things like that, looking to go to bigger markets later in the year for the playoffs. Just trying to make our competitive model better, and how do we do that?” Woods said, adding that moving the Genesis Invitational to August “certainly is on the table.”

All the while, Woods said it was important to create a path for the next batch of stars.

“We’re trying to create opportunities for that turnover … to get more youth out here because eventually they’re going to take over the game,” Woods said. “So trying to create that opportunity, trying to create the right competitive model and the environment to foster that, that’s been the greater challenge of it all.”

As for the Ryder Cup, that also is in the wait-and-see mode.

The PGA of America waited longer than it ever has before choosing Keegan Bradley for the ’25 matches at Bethpage Black because it was waiting on an answer from Woods.

He doesn’t appear to have made much headway.

“They have asked me for my input on it, and I haven’t made my decision yet,” Woods said. “I’m trying to figure out what we’re trying to do with our tour. That’s been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team — Team USA and our players and everyone that’s going to be involved in the Ryder Cup — if I can do it justice with my time.”

Woods became involved at Riviera in 2017 when his TGR Venture began running the event, and now he is the official host in the same capacity of Jack Nicklaus at the Memorial and the late Arnold Palmer at Bay Hill. Those three signature events are the only ones with a 36-hole cut.

Genesis announced it was renewing as title sponsor at Riviera, even amid questions whether it might move to late summer. Genesis also is title sponsor of the Scottish Open in July. There also is a question of how Riviera could be held in August 2028 a month after the Olympics.

Jazz C Jaren Jackson Jr. to be evaluated in 4 weeks after knee surgery

Utah Jazz center Jaren Jackson Jr. underwent successful left knee surgery, the team announced via social media Tuesday.

Jackson’s surgery was done to remove a localized pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) growth in his left knee. He’ll begin rehab and be evaluated after four weeks. The procedure was performed by Dr. Travis Maak on Tuesday morning in Salt Lake City.

Utah acquired Jackson at the trade deadline earlier this month in an eight-player multi-draft pick deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. But the team announced just three games into his tenure with him that he’d be out for the rest of the campaign with the injury. Jackson is in his eighth NBA season and making $35 million this season. That number jumps to $50 million next season and to over $52 million the following year.

In 48 games this season, Jackson averaged 19.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.4 blocks per game. The Grizzlies are in 11th place in the Western Conference at 20-33, while the Jazz are in 13th place at 18-38 as one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Jackson was drafted No. 4 overall by Memphis in 2018. During his time with the Grizzlies, Jackson developed into one of the league’s best defenders and took home Defensive Player of the Year honors for the 2022-23 campaign.

With the Grizzlies, Jackson was a three-time All-Defensive selection, two-time All-Star, two-time league leader in blocks and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2019. He also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season.

When to Choose Resistance Bands vs. Dumbbells

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Resistance bands and dumbbells are both great for strength training at home, since they don’t require much storage space and tend to be a lot cheaper than a full setup with a barbell and plates. But they each have pros and cons, so let’s talk about how to choose.

Resistance bands can offer more total weight

If you buy beefy enough resistance bands, they offer a lot of resistance. A pair of “strong” bands from EliteFTS will pull on a barbell with the same force as 122 to 275 pounds of weights, depending on how far you stretch them. During the time gyms were closed because of COVID, coach Greg Nuckols told us that a set of bands would be his pick for training as heavy as possible without traditional gym equipment.

Dumbbells are more versatile

If you truly love resistance bands, you can probably figure out how to do almost anything with them. But for most of us, dumbbells are a little more intuitive and it’s easier to find exercises that work appropriate muscles.

If you use a resistance band, for many exercises you’ll need to find a place to anchor it. Sometimes you step on the band, so it’s pulling on your feet (not always comfortable if you work out barefoot). Other times you’ll need an appropriate anchor at floor level, or overhead, or straight in front of you. Depending on where you work out, there may not be anything strong enough to do the job with the right placement.

This means it’s easier to put together a routine with dumbbells: you just pick them up. Plenty of staple gym exercises use dumbbells, and you probably already know some: bicep curls, shoulder presses, bench presses, lunges, and so on. Just hold the weights and do the exercise, no planning needed.

Resistance bands wear out over time

Iron is forever, but rubber degrades over time. Check the manufacturer’s directions, but most will tell you to replace your bands after a year, or for thinner bands, sometimes just a few months.

The way you use the bands can affect their lifespan. If the band rubs against its anchor point, for example, that can wear it out more quickly. (Follow manufacturers’ instructions for properly anchoring the band or attaching it to accessories.) When a band snaps, it may end up hitting you, which is why some trainers advise against moves like face pulls in which you’re pulling a band toward yourself.

The tension on bands depends on their length

This, I think, is the most important difference between bands and dumbbells. When you pick up something from the floor, you have to support its entire weight as soon as it leaves the ground. But if you’re getting the resistance from a band, the resistance will feel very light when you’re closer to the floor, and get progressively harder as you stand up with it.

This means you may be working harder than you want at the top of the lift, but not being challenged at all at the bottom. You can still work all your muscles if you choose and combine exercises appropriately, but you have to carefully choose exercises to make sure you’re working every part of the range of movement. This factor means that bands aren’t a drop-in replacement for dumbbell or barbell work.

You’ll outgrow fixed dumbbells

People often start with a pair of dumbbells that come stamped with a number on one end (a five-pound pair, for example), but if you actually train with dumbbells consistently, pretty soon you’ll need more. You’ll also notice that different exercises require different weights: Something that’s challenging to curl will probably still be too light to press overhead.

A way around this is to buy adjustable dumbbells. You slide plates on and off, or with the fancy (expensive) brands you place them back on their rack and select the next weight. I have some picks for good adjustable dumbbells here.

You can still outgrow adjustable dumbbells. The affordable ones that come in 40-pound sets might seem huge to you at first, but 20 pounds per hand is not that much if you’re strong. “I can always buy more of the little plates,” you’ll say to yourself, forgetting to check how much room the dumbbell handle has for little plates. Often, not much.

The bottom line is that dumbbells and resistance bands each have their pros and cons. It’s cheaper to buy several sizes of resistance bands than to buy a full lineup of dumbbells, but the bands won’t necessarily give you the same workout. This is another case where the ideal answer is probably: Why not both?

Mike Conley Jr. rejoins Timberwolves after being traded twice, waived by Hornets

Mike Conley Jr. is returning to Minnesota after a trade deadline pinball trip through the league.

After being traded twice ahead of the NBA trade deadline (and subsequently waived), the longtime NBA veteran has signed with the Timberwolves, the team confirmed Tuesday.

Conley, 38, was first dealt from the Wolves to the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team trade that sent Kevin Huerter and Dario Šarić to the Detroit Pistons. Detroit also received a 2026 protected first-round swap with Minnesota. Also in the deal, Jaden Ivey went from the Pistons to the Bulls.

A day later, Conley was on his way to the Charlotte Hornets with Coby White in exchange for Collin Sexton and three second-round picks. The Bulls also acquired Ousmane Dieng from Charlotte in a deal in which the Oklahoma City Thunder got Mason Plumlee.

Yet neither the Bulls nor the Hornets intended to keep Conley and his $10.7 million salary for the 2025-26 campaign. He can be a free agent after the season.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement says teams are not allowed to trade a player and then re-sign him if he’s waived. However, Conley was able to return to Minnesota since he was traded a second time before he was let go.

Following the brief interruption to his stay, Conley will resume his fourth season with the Timberwolves. He returns to a Minnesota team that added Ayo Dosunmu and Julian Phillips in another deadline deal that sent Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller and four second-round picks to Chicago.

Before being dealt, Conley was averaging 4.4 points, 2.9 assists and 1.8 rebounds while limited to 44 games with back spasms and tendinopathy in his right Achilles.

Overall, Conley has played 19 seasons in the NBA, 12 for the Memphis Grizzlies and four with the Utah Jazz. During his career, he has averaged 13.7 points and 5.6 assists while shooting 39% on 3-pointers.

Minnesota is 34-22 and in sixth place in the West.
