Jack Hughes has a hat trick and an assist in the Devils’ 6-3 win over the Rangers

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Jack Hughes had a hat trick and an assist, Nico Hischier scored the go-ahead goal, and the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers 6-3 on Saturday for their fourth straight win.

Hischier scored a power-play goal at 8:05 of the third — his team-leading 21st — to give the Devils a 4-3 lead before Hughes scored twice, including one into an empty net, for his fourth career hat trick.

Jesper Bratt and Dawson Mercer also scored for the Devils, who are nine points out of a playoff spot. Bratt and Connor Brown had two assists each and Jacob Markstrom made 17 saves.

Will Borgen, Vladislav Gavrikov and Will Cuylle scored for the last-place Rangers, who were coming off a 6-2 home win over Toronto on Thursday. New York is 4-12-3 since winning the Winter Classic over Florida on Jan. 2.

Bratt opened the scoring 1:06 into the contest, beating Jonathan Quick for his 14th goal.

Borgen tied it at 6:26, converting a pass from Vincent Trocheck, who was still a Ranger on Saturday after being the subject of trade rumors for weeks heading into Friday’s deadline.

Gavrikov put New York ahead at 8:36 of the first.

Mercer tied the game on the power play at 19:47 for his 200th career point.

Hughes put New Jersey up 3-2 on the power play at 15:52 of the second, his first goal since scoring the gold medal-winning goal for Team USA at the Winter Olympics on Feb. 22.

He scored his second on a breakaway at 16:56 of the third before finishing his hat trick with an empty-net goal as the home crowded serenaded him with chants of “USA, USA!”

Cuylle had tied the contest for third time at 16:53 of the second.

Quick made 29 saves.

US President Donald Trump appears to wear makeup after apparent rash breaks out on neck, reports say

Saturday, March 7, 2026

On Tuesday, a rash that reporters had observed on US President Donald Trump‘s neck in photos from the Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House one day earlier appeared to have been covered up. One media source indicated the substance used was cosmetic makeup, although Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, told the source the rash had been covered up by a “very common cream”.

President Trump has worn makeup in public before. He once wore makeup to obscure bruises on his hands, which White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated were inflicted from “shaking hands all day every day.” Trump himself has attributed the bruises to his use of aspirin, which he says he takes excessive amounts of. Trump said, “They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart. I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?”

Mavericks’ Khris Middleton fined $25,000 for throwing mouthpiece toward stands in Orlando

Dallas Mavericks guard Khris Middleton was fined $25,000 for throwing his mouthpiece “in the direction of the spectator stands” at Kia Arena during Thursday’s 115-114 loss to the Orlando Magic, the NBA announced Saturday.

The incident occurred midway through the third quarter after Middleton was defended tightly by Jalen Suggs and lost the ball. He looked at the officials, presumably wanting a foul call, then tossed his mouthpiece toward the Mavericks’ bench.

The object landed in front of a fan and slid toward a Dallas assistant coach, according to the Dallas Morning News. Middleton was then given a technical foul.

Middleton scored a game-high 19 points for Dallas, his second-best point total since going to the Mavericks in the blockbuster deal that sent Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards.

The veteran forward opted to stay with Dallas soon thereafter, rather than be bought out of his contract. Though playoff contenders were reportedly interested in picking him up, including the Denver Nuggets. Middleton will become a free agent after the season, but co-interim general manager Michael Finley said the Mavericks would like to re-sign him, calling him “a consummate pro.”

In 11 games with the Mavericks, Middleton is averaging 12.4 points and 4.3 rebounds and shooting 28% on 3-point attempts. Including his stint with the Wizards, Middleton has played 45 games this season, averaging 10.8 points, 4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while shooting 32% on 3s.

Middleton has played 14 NBA seasons, 12 of them with the Milwaukee Bucks. A three-time All-Star, he has a career scoring average of 16.3 points and 38% shooting from 3-point range. He was traded to the Wizards last season for Kyle Kuzma.

At 21-42, Dallas currently holds the 12th spot in the Western Conference, 8.5 games behind the Portland Trail Blazers for the No. 10 seed and a berth in the NBA play-in tournament.

After Friday’s 120-100 loss to the Boston Celtics (with Jayson Tatum returning for Boston), the Mavericks continue their Eastern road trip Sunday versus the Toronto Raptors.

Tarik Skubal says Tigers never made him a long-term offer in offseason: ‘I’ll deal with the contract stuff at the end of the year’

Tarik Skubal says the Detroit Tigers never made him a long-term offer during the offseason, and talks regarding his future will be on hold until after the 2026 MLB season.

The 29-year-old Tigers ace won his arbitration hearing in February, which featured the largest filing difference in MLB arbitration history. While the team was seeking to pay Skubal $19 million, the back-to-back AL Cy Young Award winner was awarded a $32 million salary for the 2026 season by a three-person panel.

Despite the resolution to his arbitration case, Skubal’s future in Detroit remains cloudy. The left-hander has been with the franchise since he was a ninth-round selection in the 2018 MLB Draft. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent next winter and command at least $400 million in his next contract. That leaves the Tigers with a question about what to do if they do not extend him before the trade deadline.

However, any contract talks for Skubal are finished until the offseason, he told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

“There is no offer, and there won’t be an offer until the end of the season,” Skubal said. “My focus is on playing baseball and winning this year. I’ll deal with the contract stuff at the end of the year, and then we’ll kind of see. And that’s fine. It’s their decision.”

Skubal will make his one and only World Baseball Classic start Saturday night against Great Britain (8 p.m. ET; Fox). He’s expected to throw around 55 pitches and then rejoin the Tigers in Florida to continue his preparation for the MLB season as Detroit eyes a third straight playoff berth.

The Tigers bolstered their pitching rotation in the offseason by adding lefty Framber Valdez and bringing back Justin Verlander, who won an MVP and one of his three Cy Youngs during his first stint in Detroit.

The contract talk will come later; for now, Skubal is looking to be playing deep into October.

“That’s where my focus is, trying to win a World Series for the city of Detroit, the team that drafted me in 2018,” Skubal said. “The Tigers fans are excited, they’re really invested in this club, and so are we.

“… You can kind of see that a World Series is attainable with the additions that we’ve made. And that’s all you can ask for, is to play on a team with World Series aspirations year in and year out. So it’s going to be a ton of fun this year.”
