Lenovo’s Foldable Gaming Handheld Is Too Cool to Remain Just a Concept

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Gaming handhelds are in a bit of a rough spot right now. The Nintendo Switch 2 costs significantly more than its predecessor, the Steam Deck is out of stock in most regions, and the Xbox handheld is prone to bugs. Plus, they’re all huge.

Lenovo has been one of the better companies in this space of late, releasing two of my favorite gaming handhelds running, but the company apparently isn’t done with handhelds yet. At Mobile World Congress, Lenovo showed off its newest concept, the modular Legion Go Fold handheld, a device that tries to solve pretty much every problem in gaming handhelds through one neat trick: It’s also a foldable tablet.

The device is essentially a tablet with an 11.6-inch OLED screen that can fold in half, but it comes with two controller halves that can attach to it in a number of ways. While you can use the full screen horizontally if you like, with one controller half on either side, you can also orient the tablet vertically for a “dual-screen” experience. Or, fold that vertical orientation over itself for a more compact 7.7-inch screen. There’s also a stand and Bluetooth keyboard you can use to turn the tablet into a pseudo laptop, and you can even connect the controller halves to a connector piece to turn it into a standalone controller that doesn’t need to be attached to the tablet. I tried all of these configurations, and they mostly felt comfortable, although I’ll admit the “dual-screen” mode did feel a little top heavy on the early prototype I tested.

Lenovo’s “FPS Mode” even makes a return, so you can take the right-hand controller piece and slot it into a special dock to use it like a mouse. Essentially, this thing can play in pretty much any orientation or form factor you can think of, meaning you won’t need to buy multiple handhelds for different use cases anymore. The tablet is Windows-based, too, promising more app compatibility than Android. And one of the controller halves even has its own tiny OLED screen, for keeping an eye on important performance stats.

The catch? Like a lot of Lenovo’s more interesting devices, the Legion Go Fold is just a concept for now. If you want to see it come to fruition, you’ll have to make your voice heard with an email or social post—Lenovo has a history of making good on its concepts, so you never know if the company is just testing the waters to gauge interest.

Unfortunately, because it’s a concept, there’s no word on what the Legion Go Fold might cost, although I do know the prototype I saw was decked out with an Intel Core Ultra 7 CPU, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. Based on Lenovo’s other gaming handhelds, I’d have to guess this would start for at least $600, and could go as high as $1,100, which is obviously pricier than the Switch 2 or Steam Deck, but might be worth it for all this device can do.

Lenovo also showed off a Framework competitor

The Legion Go Fold is the clear standout among Lenovo’s MWC lineup, but there are a few other noteworthy devices worth calling out.

Alongside iterations on existing laptops and consumer tablets that will be making their way to market later this year, Lenovo also showed off the ThinkBook Modular AI PC concept, which reads like the company’s approach to the Framework Laptop. This device seems like a normal laptop at first, but you can swap out the keyboard for a second display if you’d like. You can then use that display for touch input, or continue to use the keyboard you just removed wirelessly. There’s also an integrated kickstand, so you can prop up the second display to become an external monitor instead, and slot the second display into the laptop lid to use the device like a tablet while it’s closed.

So far, none of that is especially Framework-y, but the kicker is that this concept’s ports are modular, so you can mix and match how many USB or ethernet connections you have. That’s something we haven’t really seen from any company other than Framework, so it looked like Lenovo decided to see that laptop’s bet and then raise it.

The Lenovo Workmate is an odd AI device

In the enterprise space, there’s the Lenovo AI Workmate, a concept that basically attaches an AI chatbot to an animated touchscreen and puts it on an articulating robot arm. It’s supposed to be able to do regular computer things, like scan documents or even create PowerPoints, but looking at the thing, I think the idea is to make you greet your new robot overlords with a smile.

Also, while I didn’t get to see them, Lenovo also showed off concepts for the AI Work Companion, which focuses more on scheduling and look like a retro alarm clock, and the Yoga Wireless Webcam, which can stream 4K video to your computer from a distance.

Finally, the company showed off a glasses-free 3D laptop concept, called the Yoga Book Pro 3D. Devices like these have become common among creatives in the past few years, but what sets this one apart is that it comes with magnetic pucks you can place on it to summon certain tools in your editing programs.

Again, these concepts aren’t guaranteed to come to market, but they certainly bring some much-needed oddball energy to the table at a time when other big companies are sticking with tried-and-true designs. Here’s hoping the RAM crisis doesn’t keep them in the lab longer than necessary.

Cardinals sign manager Oliver Marmol to 2-year extension with 2029 club option

The St. Louis Cardinals signed manager Oliver Marmol to a two-year contract extension, the team announced on Sunday. The deal includes a club option for 2029.

Marmol, 39, is going into his fifth season as Cardinals manager, named after Mike Shildt was fired following the 2021 campaign. During his four years in the dugout, St. Louis has compiled a 325-323 record.

St. Louis won the NL Central with a 93-69 record in Marmol’s first season, finishing seven games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals went on to be swept in the National League wild-card series, 2-0, by the eventual league champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Since then, the Cardinals have been less successful under Marmol while the team attempts to reduce payroll and undergo a rebuild, something to which the team and its fans are not accustomed. St. Louis finished last in the NL Central in Marmol’s second season and rebounded to a second-place finish in 2024.

However, the Cardinals placed fourth last season with a 78-84 record and traded veterans Sonny Gray, Willson Contreras, Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan during the offseason.

Between the team emphasizing younger players and Chaim Bloom taking over for John Mozeliak (who hired Marmol) as president of baseball operations, Marmol’s job security seemed uncertain. He was going into the final season of the two-year extension he signed in March 2024.

However, Marmol began his coaching career as hitting coach for the Cardinals’ rookie league team and worked his way up through the club’s minor-league organization as a manager. He joined St. Louis’ major-league staff as first-base coach in 2017, then was the team’s bench coach for three seasons.

Marmol’s background in instruction and development, and his interest in working with young players, is what apparently led the Cardinals to sign him to an extension.

“They’re super excited about the moments we’re going to have to truly teach and dive into the details of the game,” Marmol told reporters as spring training began, via the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “This is a group that is extremely receptive to that. So, for those reasons I’m excited.”

The Cardinals have one of baseball’s top minor-league talents in shortstop JJ Wetherholt, ranked by MLB.com as the No. 5 overall prospect. Left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle and catcher Rainiel Rodriguez are also ranked among the top 50.

St. Louis also features several players aged 25 or younger in its regular lineup, including shortstop Masyn Winn, center fielder Victor Scott II, right fielder Jordan Walker, DH Iván Herrera and infielder Nolan Gorman.

Knicks end Spurs’ 11-game winning streak with early surge leading to decisive 114-89 victory

After going undefeated in February, the San Antonio Spurs began March with a loss. The Spurs’ 11-game winning streak ended on Sunday at Madison Square Garden with a defeat to the New York Knicks.

Initially, San Antonio appeared to be on its way to a 12th consecutive win. The Spurs took a 19-7 lead in the first quarter on a Stephon Castle 3-pointer with 4:56 remaining in the frame and looked like they were in full control.

However, the game then took a 180-degree turn. Jalen Brunson scored New York’s final 11 points of the first, putting the Knicks on top with a 3. Brunson’s outburst was part of a 26-2 Knicks run that ended with Mikal Bridges getting a fast-break dunk off a Victor Wembanyama miss, resulting in a 33-21 lead.

San Antonio scored the final five points of the first half to close the Knicks’ lead to 51-41, and cut the deficit to eight points to begin the third quarter. But every time the Spurs tried to start a rally, New York quickly answered with a basket to maintain a double-digit lead.

Playing the fourth game of a five-game road trip, the Spurs seemed to finally run out of fuel in the fourth quarter and the Knicks capitalized, going on a 17-6 run to begin the closing 12 minutes. A 3-pointer from Landry Shamet essentially put the game out of reach, giving New York a 104-82 lead with 3:37 remaining.

From there, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson pulled his starters from the game and emptied the bench.

Bridges led the Knicks with 25 points (hitting 5-of-9 3-pointers), along with 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Brunson added 24 points with 4 rebounds and 7 assists. Mohamed Diawara provided a surprise off the bench with 14 points (knocking down 4-of-13 3-point tries).

Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby each scored 12 points, but struggled against Wembanyama near the basket. Towns also grabbed 14 boards.

The win boosted the Knicks’ record to 39-22, keeping them close to the Boston Celtics (39-22 going into their Sunday night matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers) for the No. 2 spot in the Eastern Conference. New York has won four of its past five games and 14 of its past 18. The Knicks face the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday before matchups versus the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets later in the week.

Wembanyama scored 25 points for the Spurs, adding 13 rebounds and 4 blocks. Devin Vassell followed with 18 points and 7 rebounds, but Castle was the only other San Antonio player to score in double figures.

Three-point shooting was a major asset for the Spurs during their 11-game winning streak, but they struggled from long range on Sunday. San Antonio shot only 26% (9-for-34) on 3-point tries, and Vassell was the only Spur to hit more than one, going 3-for-9.

The Spurs finish their Eastern road trip on Tuesday versus the 76ers and then begin a six-game homestand against the Detroit Pistons, who they defeated last week, 114-103, in arguably the most impressive win during their 11-game streak.

Yankees invite Randal Grichuk to spring training to compete for reserve outfield role

After signing outfielder Randal Grichuk to a minor-league contract, the New York Yankees announced on Sunday that he’s been officially invited to the team’s major-league spring training camp.

Grichuk, 34, is expected to be the Yankees’ fourth outfielder who will primarily bat against left-handed pitching. For his career, Grichuk has a .268/.318/.500 slash line versus lefties. He wasn’t quite as impressive in those matchups last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals, compiling a .703 OPS. But he still hit seven home runs with 12 doubles, 11 walks and 18 RBI.

That performance was enough for the Yankees to bring in Grichuk. He will likely platoon with Trent Grisham, who batted .182/.303/.348 against left-handed pitching last season.

“He’s kind of settled into that role here now in the last few years. In ’23 and ’24, and even the first part of ’25, he was killing lefties,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the New York Post. “I think he struggled a little bit when he got traded to Kansas City at the deadline last year. But we think he has a chance to be a factor for us.”

Grichuk could also be an option at designated hitter versus lefties if Giancarlo Stanton continues to struggle with tendinitis in both elbows early in the season. This week, Stanton told reporters he “can’t open a bottle or “a bag of chips” because of the condition.

Adding Grichuk might raise eyebrows among Yankees fans with fellow outfielder Jasson Domínguez. However, the 23-year-old registered a .569 OPS against lefties last season, with a .530 mark during his early career. The Yankees apparently want Domínguez to play every day in Triple-A rather than platoon in the majors.

Spencer Jones has also been impressive early in spring training, hitting three home runs in five Grapefruit League games. But he had a .662 OPS versus left-handers. And the Yankees want him to reduce his strikeouts overall before considering him for a major-league role. Last season, Jones struck out 179 times in 506 plate appearances between Double- and Triple-A.

In 12 MLB seasons, Grichuk has a .251/.298/.465 average with 268 doubles, 212 homers and 629 RBI. He’s played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels, in addition to the D-Backs and Royals.
