Angels start season 2-0 for first time of Mike Trout’s professional career

There are some stats that make you realize the Los Angeles Angels aren’t like other MLB franchises. This is one of them.

With a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday, the Angels moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2007. That’s a 19-year span that also includes the entirety of Mike Trout’s professional career.

The Angels drafted the three-time MVP in the 2009 MLB Draft.

That span of time also includes Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani’s entire time with the franchise, which hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2014.

Trout homered in both of the Angels’ two wins, with the first coming in their 3-0 win on Opening Day. So far this season, he is 4-for-6 with two homers and four walks, which is an encouraging start after a down few seasons.

Trout’s commentary after the game, via MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger:

“It’s a good start to the year. The last two games have been great team wins from everybody. Everybody’s contributing. Pitching staff is making pitches and then timely hitting.”

Obviously, two wins is not a definitive sign a team has turned a corner. The Angels face long odds to just reach the playoffs — they are an AL West-worst +2200 to win the division — but they at least wiped away some negative history on Friday.

They have two more games against the Astros this weekend, then a road series against the Chicago Cubs next week before their home opener against the Seattle Mariners next Friday.

Luka Dončić suspended 1 game after 16th technical foul of season

Luka Dončić picked up his 16th technical foul on Friday. This one stuck.

The Los Angeles Lakers star received a one-game suspension from the NBA on Saturday after reaching a critical mass of technical fouls for the second time this season, the league announced. He will miss the Lakers’ game against the Washington Wizards on Monday, and will also be fined $50,000.

Dončić got T’d up for a confrontation with Ziaire Williams of the Brooklyn Nets. Both men appeared to get a hand on each other while exchanging words in the third quarter, leading to a double technical.

Dončić went on to score 41 points in the Lakers’ 116-99 win.

Dončić’s defense, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin:

“He was in my face three times, I just wanted to get out of there. It’s a double tech, of course. What can I say? I didn’t even talk, I just wanted to get out of there. They said my push was exaggerated, which was obviously not.”

He finished the game with 41 points, his NBA-best 15th 40-point game of the season. He also joined Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West as the only Lakers players to post 12 consecutive 30-point games.

The NBA had the option to rescind the foul, like it did last week. Dončić got his 16th tech after getting into it with Orlando Magic forward Goga Bitadze, but ended up not having to sit out a clash with the Detroit Pistons. Another tech was rescinded earlier in the season, in a clear case of a mistaken official.

This is the first time Dončić has received the technical foul suspension, though he’s come close in the past. He finished three straight seasons from 2020 to 2023 with 15 techs and had 13 last season. He was actually in the same position in 2023, but the NBA decided to rescind the 16th tech in that case.

Dončić is be the second player in the NBA to receive such a suspension, joining Phoenix Suns villain Dillon Brooks. Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert has also been suspended multiple times due to his six flagrant fouls.

Dončić will face a $5,000 fine for every subsequent technical foul and another one-game suspension for every two techs for the remainder of the regular season.

Dodgers hand out World Series rings, featuring Game 7 dirt from Blue Jays’ stadium

The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their 2025 World Series title with an ungodly amount of diamonds on Friday.

The back-to-back champions distributed their World Series rings to players in a pregame ceremony ahead of their second matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They won their season opener 8-2 on Thursday, after unveiling their 2025 championship banner.

The rings were, of course, opulent and intricate.

Here is a paragraph from the Champions Collective, the Jostens-backed makers of the rings, on how many diamonds and sapphires they jam-packed into these things:

The ring top is a statement of victory. Embellished around the face in 14K yellow gold, the title WORLD CHAMPIONS is written in a spectacular array of stones: 32 diamonds for WORLD and 54 for CHAMPIONS. At the heart of the design, a singular, immaculate diamond symbolizes the Dodgers’ spot as the No. 1 team in baseball. The iconic LA logo hosts 17 custom-cut blue sapphires, representing the 17 hard-fought games of their postseason journey. Behind the logo is a backdrop of 79 diamonds with 48 round sapphires surrounding the display. The Dodgers’ nine championship dates and 15 sparkling round sapphires encircle the ring top, while an additional 50 diamonds decorate the top and bottom of the bezel. Completing the ring top, a total of 70 round diamonds frame the centerpiece.

For those keeping score at home, that adds up to 286 diamonds and 80 sapphires on the ring tops alone.

Other features include a glass enclosure inside the ring displaying dirt gathered from home plate during the Dodgers’ epic Game 7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays and a second, smaller ring inside featuring each player’s signature. The scores of each series from the playoff run are also featured inside, and the team’s 4,012,470 total attendance can be found at the bottom.

The players, including World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto, were happy to receive them in a ceremony emceed by Anthony Anderson.

The Dodgers also brought out the recently retired (and hired) Clayton Kershaw to throw out the first pitch and receive his own ring.

For the national anthem, the Dodgers tempted fate by bringing out Brad Paisley, the man who sang the anthem before both of their 18-inning games in the 2018 and 2025 World Series.

For all the effort put into celebrating 2025, it was either irony or kismet that two of the biggest difference-makers were players who didn’t receive a ring Friday.

Kyle Tucker and Edwin Díaz, the Dodgers’ two big offseason signings, both came up clutch against the D-backs. Tucker — he of the four-year, $240 million contract — drove in the winning run with a single in the eighth inning.

Díaz then entered for his first save as a Dodger, complete with a live trumpeteer for his “Narcos” entrance. He worked around a one-out walk to complete the 5-4 win for Los Angeles.

The Dodgers are now 2-0, with expectations for far more wins this season. We’ll see how that goes.

Timberwolves C Naz Reid fined $50K for questioning integrity of Scott Foster

Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid won the battle but lost some money.

The former Sixth Man of the Year was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Friday for “questioning the integrity of game officials” over a call in the T-wolves’ unprecedented win over the Houston Rockets earlier this week.

The incident in question occurred early in overtime, when Reid was called for a charge after driving into Rockets center Alperen Şengün. Minnesota challenged the call and appeared to have a good case, as Şengün’s feet were definitely mobile at the time of contact.

Crew chief Scott Foster thought otherwise. After review, he said Şengün had established legal guarding position and the call stood. Reid, visibly confused, said something to Foster — lip-readers interpreted it as “he was moving” — and was immediately ejected from the game.

The ejection left the Timberwolves down five rotation players, as Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu missed the game with injuries, Jayden McDaniels left in the fourth quarter with a knee injury and Rudy Gobert fouled out at the end of regulation. Despite then falling behind by 13 points in overtime, Minnesota still rallied to win the wildest game of its season.

The Timberwolves were not interested in burying that hatchet after the game, as one of them could be heard yelling, “That s*** didn’t work, Scott Foster” in the back tunnels.

Foster stood by the calls while speaking with a pool reporter after the game, insisting that Şengün “beat [Reid] to the spot, prior to his upward shooting motion” and gained legal guarding position.

Stephen Curry nears return for Warriors, but will miss at least 2 more games as regular season winds down

Stephen Curry’s recovery from a knee injury will extend at least into next week, the Golden State Warriors announced Friday night.

The Warriors had previously said on Saturday, March 21, that Curry — who has missed nearly two months with patella-femoral pain syndrome and bone bruising in his right knee — had been evaluated and will be incorporated into live action and team practices in the coming days. Curry, however, was unable to scrimmage according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and will now be re-evaluated next week.

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

That means Curry is scheduled to miss Sunday’s game in Denver against the Nuggets, in addition to Friday’s home game against the Washington Wizards. That will bring his total to 25 straight missed games since he left Golden State’s Jan. 30 game against the Detroit Pistons with soreness in his knee.

The Warriors will have only seven games left in the regular season after Sunday. They almost certainly will begin the postseason in the Western Conference play-in tournament.

With Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody already out for the season, the Warriors are facing another disappointing season with their aging core. The team currently holds the final play-in spot of the Western Conference at 35-38 and is in no danger of falling lower, while being 1.5 games back from the eighth-place Portland Trail Blazers for the better play-in game.

Even if the Warriors make it through the play-in tournament, their reward would either be the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs. in the first round of the playoffs. That has left them with little incentive to push Curry more than needed for the rest of the season.

NBA playoff picture March 27: All of the scenarios and stakes for postseason contenders down the stretch run

The NBA playoff picture will come into clearer view each day between now and the end of the regular season on April 12. In the meantime, we will provide detailed daily updates on the landscape, including magic numbers, remaining schedules and the stakes for every day’s slate of games. And for those teams not in the postseason hunt, we also breakdown the “race” for the pole position in the upcoming NBA Draft lottery.

(2) San Antonio Spurs vs. (7) play-In winner
(3) Los Angeles Lakers vs. (6) Houston Rockets
(4) Denver Nuggets vs. (5) Minnesota Timberwolves

In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers, in some order, appear bound for the top four playoff seeds and home-court advantage in the opening round. The Pistons, who hold a four-game lead on the Celtics, are almost certain to capture the East’s No. 1 seed, barring a complete meltdown in the absence of injured Cade Cunningham (collapsed lung).

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

Who, exactly, those four teams will play in the opening round is entirely up for grabs, as just two wins separate the fifth seed from the 10th seed. The Toronto Raptors, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat are all jockeying for position down the stretch of a season that has surpassed 70 games.

Technically, the Milwaukee Bucks and Chicago Bulls are still alive for postseason contention, though they are locked in a different kind of race — one for lottery odds.

Bulls eliminated from postseason with loss

Out West, the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are bound for the top two seeds, with OKC holding a two-game lead for the league’s No. 1 overall seed.

The Los Angeles Lakers, with their recent nine-game winning streak, moved in as heavy favorites to capture the conference’s No. 3 seed. Beyond them is anyone’s guess.

The Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets, who are all but guaranteed the West’s final three guaranteed playoff spots, with just one loss separating them. Only one of those three teams will earn home-court advantage in the first round.

The four teams for the conference’s play-in tournament field is almost set with the Memphis Grizzlies’ elimination on Wednesday. The Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers and Golden State Warriors appear headed for the Nos. 7-10 seeds.

Bulls secure berth in lottery with loss

Cubs, Nico Hoerner reportedly agree on 6-year, $141 million contract extension

Infielder Nico Hoerner and the Chicago Cubs have reportedly agreed to a six-year, $141 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Cubs have not announced the signing. Some of the money is deferred, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

Hoerner, 28, was set to become a free agent after this season, finishing a three-year, $35 million extension he signed before the 2023 MLB campaign. Instead, he lands the fourth-largest contract ever for a second baseman by total money, behind Robinson Cano ($240 million), Marcus Semien ($175 million) and Jose Altuve ($151 million).

Hoerner has been remarkably consistent throughout his seven-year career. Last season, he slashed .297/.345/.394 with 29 doubles, 7 home runs, 61 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 649 plate appearances. At second base, Hoerner was credited with 17 Defensive Runs Saved and 14 Outs Above Average. Both of those marks were the highest of his career, during which he has earned two Gold Glove Awards.

In his seven seasons with the Cubs, Hoerner has recorded a .282/.340/.384 slash line, with 128 doubles, 36 homers, 278 RBI and 131 stolen bases. He has played 150 or more games in each of the past three seasons.

Hoerner’s reported extension follows Pete Crow-Armstrong reportedly agreeing to a six-year, $115 million deal earlier this week. That takes care of the Cubs’ up-the-middle players, with Dansby Swanson inked through 2029 on the seven-year, $177 million free-agent deal he signed in December 2023.

Tiger Woods charged with driving under influence after crash

Tiger Woods has been arrested on charges of driving under the influence after rolling his car in a crash in Florida, authorities have confirmed.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the 15-time major champion was also charged with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Woods, 50, rolled his Land Rover after clipping a truck in Jupiter Island on Friday afternoon, according to Sheriff John Budensiek, who added officers did not suspect the golfing legend of alcohol impairment but possibly by an unknown substance.

The golfer, who had to crawl out of the passenger door of his vehicle, passed a breathalyser test after the crash but refused a urine test. No one was injured.

Authorities released images of the crash, showing skid marks on the road where Woods appeared to lose control of his vehicle and rolled it over [Martin County Sheriff’s Office]

Sheriff Budensiek told reporters at a news conference that the crash happened after Woods allegedly attempted to overtake a pressure cleaner truck at “a high rate of speed”.

DUI investigators came to the scene and “Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment”, the sheriff said.

“They did several tests on him,” Budensiek told reporters. “He did explain the injuries and surgeries that he’s had and we did take that into account, but they did some in-depth roadside tests.”

He was placed under arrest after the incident, which took place on Beach Road in Jupiter Island just before 14:00 local time on Friday (about 19:00 GMT).

The sheriff explained that investigators at the scene and jail were “really not suspicious of alcohol being involved” and Woods ultimately passed a breathalyser test with “triple zeros”. But, he added, Woods then refused a urine test.

Budensiek also said Woods had been “co-operative but was trying not to incriminate himself”.

“He has a right to refuse that test,” added the sheriff. “There is a statute which he will be charged with for refusing to take that test, but we will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash.”

US president Donald Trump was asked about the crash on Friday, saying: “I feel so badly. [Woods has] got some difficulty. There was an accident. That’s all I know.

“He’s a very close friend of mine, he’s an amazing person, an amazing man.”

Sheriff Budensiek said Woods would remain in jail for eight hours then be released on bond. The charges are misdemeanours, not felonies.

The BBC has contacted the golfer’s representatives for comment.

More trouble for Tiger

This is not the first time Woods has been involved in a car accident – he has played a limited schedule since the serious crash in 2021 that left him with extensive injuries and fortunate to be alive.

In 2017 police officers also found him slumped at the wheel of his parked Mercedes-Benz not far from his Florida home.

A toxicology report found Woods had several legal medications in his system and marijuana’s active ingredient, and he was sentenced to a year’s probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving.

In 2009 Woods hit a fire hydrant, a tree, and several hedges in a bizarre collision outside his home.

The incident sparked accusations of extramarital affairs which led to the end of his seven-year marriage and the loss of lucrative sponsorship deals.

Another setback to Woods’ comeback plans?

This is another unfortunate situation for Woods, who has been recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture in March 2025 and back surgery in October.

Earlier this week he competed in the TGL indoor league finals – his first competitive golf for more than a year – and had not ruled out playing in April’s Masters, a tournament he has a huge affinity for.

Woods has triumphed five times at Augusta National, which was the scene of his first major title in 1997 and also his most recent in 2019.

That victory was arguably his greatest achievement in golf given the number of injuries he had to overcome to collect a fifth Green Jacket.

However, the sight of him grittily limping through four rounds on that same course in 2022, just 14 months after a life-threatening crash, also lives long in the memory.

Woods, whose 82 career wins is level with Sam Snead for the all-time PGA Tour record, has not competed at a major since missing the cut at the Open in July 2024.

He last made the cut at the 2024 Masters, where he finished 60th.

Analysis – Masters participation looks increasingly unlikely

This is another huge setback for one of the all-time great sporting figures, who has suffered massive injury problems for the best part of two decades now.

Woods is battling to try to be fit for the Masters, which takes place in less than two weeks.

We saw him hitting golf shots competitively in the indoor TGL league at the start of this week – that was the first time since July 2024 we have seen him playing golf.

He did not seem overly optimistic he would be fit, but he was really trying to be at Augusta for the Masters.

That looks ever more unlikely given the scenario that is playing out in Florida.

John Bradshaw Layfield Reflects On Steve Austin’s 2002 WWE Walkout: ‘I Was Shocked’

One of the biggest behind-the-scenes dramas in WWE as it was coming out of its infamous Attitude Era was the walkout of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin on the company he helped launched into the mainstream. Austin walked out of Vince McMahon’s company after learning he was going to lose a King of the Ring qualifying match to Brock Lesnar, but has since clarified he didn’t want to waste the big match on free television with no build. On a recent episode of “Something to Wrestle,” John Bradshaw Layfield looked back on the time, and said he was shocked that Austin walked out that night and did not come back.

“I didn’t believe that Steve was gone and going to be gone,” he said. “You gotta understand, we got there in ’95, and business was so bad, and all of a sudden, we’re selling out everywhere. That’s the guy that did it. And all of a sudden, he’s gone? You think he’s coming back, absolutely, he’s our guy. He is our guy. So yeah, I was shocked that it didn’t happen.”

JBL said that he would have taken any odds that the conflict would have been fixed between McMahon and Austin within a week or two, or even a few months, at most. He said that McMahon made up with “almost everybody” when it came to business, regardless of his personal feelings.

Austin would return to WWE in 2003 for his final full-time year in the ring. He was brought back thanks to a postcard from “Good Ol’ JR,” Jim Ross, who was head of talent relations at the time.
