LeBron and Bronny James combine for NBA’s first-ever father-son assist

LeBron James owns a lot of NBA records. On Friday night, he added a very personal one to his Hall of Fame résumé.

During the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 116-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets, LeBron and his son, Bronny, hooked up for the first father-son assist in NBA history. After taking a pass from Bronny, LeBron drew a double-team at the top of the key. That left Bronny wide open to get the ball back from dad and drain a 3-pointer.

Dad would finish with 14 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds in 37:29 of game time. Son would play a little over four minutes and that bucket would be his only one of the game.

When asked about the unique record afterward, LeBron was proud to be a part of the moment.

“Not taking it for granted, just being in the moment of us being on the floor once again,” LeBron said. “That’s two games back-to-back playing meaningful minutes and him, also, making another play. … I got doubled, and he was able to fake the pass to the corner and then knock down the 3. Definitely a cool moment for us and also for our family.”

LeBron, 41, is seeing a better Bronny on the court this season. Nearly three years since his cardiac arrest episode while at USC, Bronny, 21, is playing more minutes in the NBA and G League, and the experience is helping him.

“It’s just getting back to where it was before the incident,” LeBron said. “He’s always been able to shoot the ball. He’s shot the ball at a high level pretty much throughout his years of playing ball, so I think it’s just the confidence and the rhythm and getting his strength back, and his wind and everything. Everything is just coming back [from] before the incident. So I’m not surprised to see him shoot the ball at a high clip.”

They are the first father-son duo to not only play in the NBA at the same time, but also for the same team. It’s a dynamic that was questioned when the Lakers drafted Bronny 55th overall in 2024.

We don’t know how much longer LeBron will play as that decision is left for down the road. For now, Bronny is beginning to build his own path.

“Especially knowing the path, you know, the road …,” LeBron told The Athletic this week.“So, just proud of him. I’m super proud of him. And he belongs. He belongs.”

Angels start season 2-0 for first time of Mike Trout’s professional career

There are some stats that make you realize the Los Angeles Angels aren’t like other MLB franchises. This is one of them.

With a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday, the Angels moved to 2-0 for the first time since 2007. That’s a 19-year span that also includes the entirety of Mike Trout’s professional career.

The Angels drafted the three-time MVP in the 2009 MLB Draft.

That span of time also includes Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani’s entire time with the franchise, which hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2014.

Trout homered in both of the Angels’ two wins, with the first coming in their 3-0 win on Opening Day. So far this season, he is 4-for-6 with two homers and four walks, which is an encouraging start after a down few seasons.

Trout’s commentary after the game, via MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger:

“It’s a good start to the year. The last two games have been great team wins from everybody. Everybody’s contributing. Pitching staff is making pitches and then timely hitting.”

Obviously, two wins is not a definitive sign a team has turned a corner. The Angels face long odds to just reach the playoffs — they are an AL West-worst +2200 to win the division — but they at least wiped away some negative history on Friday.

They have two more games against the Astros this weekend, then a road series against the Chicago Cubs next week before their home opener against the Seattle Mariners next Friday.

Luka Dončić suspended 1 game after 16th technical foul of season

Luka Dončić picked up his 16th technical foul on Friday. This one stuck.

The Los Angeles Lakers star received a one-game suspension from the NBA on Saturday after reaching a critical mass of technical fouls for the second time this season, the league announced. He will miss the Lakers’ game against the Washington Wizards on Monday, and will also be fined $50,000.

Dončić got T’d up for a confrontation with Ziaire Williams of the Brooklyn Nets. Both men appeared to get a hand on each other while exchanging words in the third quarter, leading to a double technical.

Dončić went on to score 41 points in the Lakers’ 116-99 win.

Dončić’s defense, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin:

“He was in my face three times, I just wanted to get out of there. It’s a double tech, of course. What can I say? I didn’t even talk, I just wanted to get out of there. They said my push was exaggerated, which was obviously not.”

He finished the game with 41 points, his NBA-best 15th 40-point game of the season. He also joined Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West as the only Lakers players to post 12 consecutive 30-point games.

The NBA had the option to rescind the foul, like it did last week. Dončić got his 16th tech after getting into it with Orlando Magic forward Goga Bitadze, but ended up not having to sit out a clash with the Detroit Pistons. Another tech was rescinded earlier in the season, in a clear case of a mistaken official.

This is the first time Dončić has received the technical foul suspension, though he’s come close in the past. He finished three straight seasons from 2020 to 2023 with 15 techs and had 13 last season. He was actually in the same position in 2023, but the NBA decided to rescind the 16th tech in that case.

Dončić is be the second player in the NBA to receive such a suspension, joining Phoenix Suns villain Dillon Brooks. Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert has also been suspended multiple times due to his six flagrant fouls.

Dončić will face a $5,000 fine for every subsequent technical foul and another one-game suspension for every two techs for the remainder of the regular season.
