The Best Ways to Keep Your Drafty House Warm in the Winter

Your old home may be beautiful and charming, but it’s also probably drafty as hell, and heating it can cost a fortune. Criticize modern homes for being charmless copy-and-paste jobs all you want, but they are airtight and warm. Your older home can be warmer, too, though, and then you’ll have the best of both worlds. Here’s how to heat it up efficiently without breaking the bank.

First, get some instant heat

Addressing the drafts and getting to the root of the problem is one thing, but let’s get you warmed up first. Let’s talk space heaters. For safety reasons, you need to be smart about where you place them, but these really are the gold standard when you’re in a pinch. I’ve used them in all my drafty apartments (which, as a renter, I’m not really allowed to modify too much) and in nearly every office job I’ve ever had, since I’m somehow always significantly colder than my hot-blooded coworkers.

I love tiny ones, like this, for direct, personalized heat where I need it most, like when I’m working quietly by myself and don’t want to be weighed down by a bunch of blankets.

But if you want to heat up a whole room, you need to think bigger. I’ve always had good luck with larger Lasko models, like this one.

Look for something portable and make sure it’s powerful enough to warm up a larger space. Generally, you need 10 watts of heating power for every square foot of area in the room you’re trying to heat.

I’m one of those people who goes out and spends half my night wondering, “Did I leave my curling iron on? Did I leave the coffee pot on? Did I leave the space heater on?!” One thing that has been a major godsend for me is smart outlets. If you are going to use a space heater in your home, in addition to following guidelines about making sure it’s far enough from furniture and positioned safely, consider plugging it into one of these bad boys. Then, you can always be confident that even if you did leave it on (which you probably didn’t), you can toggle the whole outlet off on your phone. Get four for $33.99.

Look into insulation options to warm your home

Once you’ve tackled the immediate problem of being cold, you can start to work on the broader problem of having a cold house. Bear in mind, changing things about your home can be pricy, so look into all your options thoroughly before you pull the trigger on anything.

You can add insulation to your home, even if it wasn’t built with the insulation space in mind—and you don’t need to be that crafty to do it, either. You’ll want to put insulation in the roof, where houses can lose a lot of heat, and then move on to your walls. On the roof, things can be a little haphazard, since few people will ever see it, but you might not want to DIY the insulation in your walls. Read these tips on insulating a basement—or call a pro.

Update your drafty windows

Replace your old windows, especially if they’re single-paned. Adding in efficient, double-paned glass won’t detract from the old-timey charm of your home—but they will help you stay warm. You can fix drafty windows without replacing them, but if you’re not double-glazing, you’re really just letting warm air out and cool air in when you don’t have to be. Get a pro to your property to install the double-glazed glass, then make sure you have heavy drapes to hang in front of them for maximum heat retention. Actually, get the drapes now to start with the heat-saving even if you can’t get an immediate window replacement.

Another option if you don’t currently have window-replacing money or you want a quick fix: A DIY window insulation shrink kit, which is about $17 for a pack of nine. It’s basically a huge piece of clear tape that you attach to your windows with a hair dryer, sealing it in place, and it helps with warm air retention in the home.

Plug up other drafts

Finally, you need to hunt down drafty areas, which are more likely to occur wherever outdoor air is separated from indoor air. You can easily DIY door draft blockers, so the good news is we’re moving into less expensive territory here. You can also grab some foam that is designed to expand in drafty spots, blocking out cold air. It costs about $10 and, similar to the foam you might use to plug up mouse holes, it expands to keep cold air out. You’ll need to feel around for drafty spots, identify the gaps, and fill them with the foam. It’s not pretty, but it works.

Beyond that, always remember to keep interior doors closed to keep warm air in each room and consider updating your radiator to a “smart” thermostat.

Here Are the Best Deals on the New iPad Mini 7

Apple announced a new iPad Mini this week: the iPad mini 7. Most Apple consumers will probably flock to make their preorders at the Apple store or Amazon, but not you, but there are two better deals out there.

If you have Apple products to trade in, Best Buy is the best bang for your buck (but you should still check what Apple will offer you for your devices). Right now Best Buy is offering up to $260 in credit for different gadgets. If you have an iPad mini 6 in good condition, you can get the full $260. You’ll have to go through a questionnaire to find the value based on what conditions your iPad mini 6 is in. To start, hit the “Check Your trade-in value” button under the price. You can also trade Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and other tech devices.

You can also just get the iPad mini 7 from Walmart for $484 (originally $499) if you don’t want to trade in anything.

The iPad mini 7 comes with the A17 Pro chip, the same chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro, and one A-series less than the iPhone 16 series uses. It’s only a year old and will be supported by Apple for many years. In comparison to the iPad mini 6, it is 30% faster than the iPad mini 6’s A15 Bionic chip, but more importantly, it runs Apple Intelligence, including new AI features like notification summaries and AI-powered writing tools. You’ll also be able to use the new Apple Pencil Pro with it, have Wi-Fi 6E support, and it starts with 128GB of storage (twice what the iPad mini 6 base model offers).

23andMe Might Owe You Some Money

Data breaches are an unfortunate yet common occurrence this day and age. A couple months ago, we learned about a breach that leaked 2.9 billion data records, including users’ social security numbers. Last year, 23andme suffered a data breach of its own, but a lot changes in a year: While they can’t unleak your data, what they can do is pay you. Most of the payouts will likely be small, but for some victims, the slice of the pie is considerable.

What happened with 23andme?

Last October, 23andme announced they had been attacked. A bad actor used a tactic called credential stuffing, where they were able to gain access to 23andme accounts by utilizing the users’ credentials from their other compromised accounts. (As a side note, this highlights the importance of using a unique password for each of your accounts.)

Through this credential stuffing, this actor was able to obtain information from DNA Relatives, as the feature relies on sharing data with other users you are genetically related to. That includes information like the user’s display name, predicted relationships, and percentage of DNA that user shared with their matches. It also includes a number of optional data points if the user opted-in to sharing them, such as location, profile picture, birth year, and a link to their family tree. To that last point, a number of user data was compromised through the Family Tree feature.

Because of how the actor attacked the site, 23andme didn’t believe any internal networks were actually compromised. However, the upshot here is that roughly 14,000 users had their accounts compromised through credential stuffing, which, because of how the relative features work, lead hackers to the data of 6.9 million accounts (5.5 million from DNA Relatives, and 1.4 million from Family Tree).

Following a settlement, 23andme agreed to pay $30 million to affected users. Taken at face value, the math works out to roughly $4.35 per user. However, the actual payouts could be much more than that.

How much money is 23andme offering users?

The short answer? It depends. According to CNET, users with an “extraordinary claim” could receive up to $10,000. To qualify, you need to prove this data breach had a substantial impact on your life that lead to expenses on your end, such as from identity fraud or fraudulent tax returns.

If your personal health information leaked, 23andme could owe you up to $100. If you live in Alaska, California, Illinois, or Oregon, you could also see up to $100, since there are specific laws in these states that apply to genetic privacy.

How to join the 23andme lawsuit

If you were affected by the data breach, you will likely be contact about the lawsuit directly—either by email or snail mail. There may be instructions on this form for making your claim, but there are also existing resources on the web for applying for your share of the settlement.

Potter Handy, LLP, for example, will help you if you live in Illinois. If you live in the UK, you can use Join the Claim: If you confirm you were contacted about your eligibility in the suit, the site will connect you with a UK-based firm.

My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: The Samsung Galaxy Ring

You’ve probably heard of Oura’s smart rings before, one of the best sleep and recovery trackers, but a new player entered the ring this July: Samsung. It’s the first time a big tech company has produced a smart ring, the Samsung Galaxy Ring. As the name implies, it’s mostly geared to Samsung users, although any Android user can use it with some limitations. Right now, the Samsung Galaxy Ring is $327.99 (originally $399.99), the lowest price it has reached since its recent release, according to price-checking tools.

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring isn’t a one-time gadget it threw at the wall to see if it would stick: it’s a well-made health-monitoring product that is likely to have improved generations in the future. But as a first-generation smart ring, it’s solid, according to PCMag’s review, as long as you have a Samsung phone to get the most out of it. It is a solid health and sleep tracker, but the activity tracking is better left to smartwatches.

The Galaxy Ring has a titanium finish with color options including gold, silver, and black. Like Oura rings, it’s a bit bulky compared to regular rings at 7 mm wide and 2.6 mm thick. Anyone wearing it can see their sleep, heart rate, and skin temperature, but Samsung users can control their phone’s camera or dismiss alarms by tapping their ring finger to their thumb twice in a row.

The best part of the ring compared to the main competition, Oura rings, is that it’s subscription-free. It also has a wireless charging case included and is IP68 water resistant so you can wash your hands or shower with it. The battery life will give you about six days of use and you can choose from a size five to 13.

If your Android phone can run the Samsung Health app, it’s compatible with the ring. If you want to access a feature called Energy Score, which gives you a score on your energy level based on sleep, diet, and activity, you’ll need a Samsung phone.

My Favorite Firefox Extensions for Android

https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/dhaka-bangladesh-15-aug-2024-firefox-2503811533

Firefox is among the rare web browsers that supports extensions on Android. For that alone, it’s worth using over Google Chrome. Extensions let you enhance your browsing experience by adding useful features such as blockers for data trackers, easier ways to browse poorly optimized mobile websites, and even ways to hide certain websites from Google search. These are my favorite Firefox add-ons for your Android phone.

Nearly every link you click has tracking parameters attached to the end. Websites use these to find out how you got to a certain page, and they can be used to profile your activity and track your browsing habits. Stop this tracking by using ClearURLs, a simple extension that removes tracking from links.

Block ads and data trackers

uBlock Origin has been one of my favorite extensions for over a decade. It blocks ads and data trackers for you, but it also has hidden features such as the ability to block cookie banners

Stop yourself from wasting time

If you find yourself doomscrolling, install Leechblock NG, which lets you block certain websites from Firefox. It lets you block entire domains or even block websites that contain certain keywords. You can also ask this extension to add a delay when opening specific websites. This is a great temporary fix, but for more permanent help, take my colleague Justin Pot’s advice on understanding why you’re doomscrolling and how you can fix the habit.

Skip past YouTube sponsorships

For those of us who’ve ditched YouTube’s app and moved to the mobile website, SponsorBlock is a godsend. It uses crowdsourced information to allow you to skip past sponsored segments in various videos, and can even skip you past intros or calls to subscribe, as well.

Play YouTube videos in the background

If you don’t have YouTube Premium, you can still play videos in the background using the Video Background Play Fix extension for Firefox. It also works with Vimeo. While this extension is great for YouTube, the experience with YouTube Music background playback is a mixed bag. It works sometimes, but not always. The developers don’t claim to support YouTube Music, which means that this extension still does what its description says.

Switch to an eye-pleasing theme

As someone who suffers from migraines, I am sensitive to bright lights, which includes white backgrounds. Some websites support dark mode, but many still don’t, and you can fix that by using Dark Reader. This extension works well, but on some Android phones, it’s known to cause slow page loads and reduced performance. If that happens to you more often than not, try Firefox’s built-in reader mode, which has a dark theme and helps you read articles without distractions, too.

A few of my favorite Reddit extensions

I’m not a huge fan of the timeline layout in Reddit’s official app, so I’ve switched to using the mobile website, although it’s not a perfect fix. In order to improve your experience, I recommend these extensions:

  • Reddit Annoyances: Lets you remove the annoying “view in Reddit’s app” banner and even lets you remove the fixed header that displays Reddit’s logo at the top.

  • Reddit Account Age: Shows any Reddit account’s age near the username. Bots or spammers often use new accounts, and this extensions makes it easier to spot them.

  • Old Reddit Redirect: Loads links using Reddit’s legacy layout. This makes the experience worse on mobile as the site is not properly optimized for it, but many still prefer this design because it discourages doomscrolling and lets you get load pages that Reddit blocks on the current mobile site (such as “unreviewed content”).

  • Reddit Enhancement Suite: Adds a host of features to the legacy Reddit website. Has great features such as the ability to hide all child comments (replies to a top-level comment), filter subreddits, and easier spam reporting.

  • Reddit NSFW Unblocker: Reddit currently blocks NSFW content on the mobile website because the content is “unreviewed.” This extension lets you get past all these blocks without using the legacy Reddit site.

View archived versions of websites

You can use the View Page Archive extension to load archived versions of web pages. The extension supports Wayback Machine and Archive.is, among other search engines that archive content.

With the advent of AI and SEO farms, Google Search is getting a bit trickier to use. When I see sites with useless results in my feed, uBlacklist helps me block them from appearing in future Google searches with just a tap. It’s a great extension that makes search results a lot more useful.

What’s New on Disney+ in November 2024

Disney+ has a light lineup of new content in November, and the biggest titles are likely to be appreciated most by music lovers. At the beginning of the month, the original documentary film Music By John Williams (Nov. 1) offers a behind-the-scenes look at the composer’s life and prolific, decades-long career. Williams scored or composed for some of the most iconic films in movie music history—including Schindler’s List, Jaws, Jurassic Park, and the Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones franchises—and has conducted some of the world’s best orchestras.

To close the month, there’s Beatles ’64 (Nov. 30), a documentary from Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi, which includes never-before-seen archival footage of the band alongside new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The film will stream exclusively on Disney+.

Between the music bookends is a new short film produced by Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón. An Almost Christmas Story (Nov. 15), the third installment of Cuarón’s holiday shorts series, was inspired by the 2020 rescue of Rocky the owl from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

Here’s everything else coming to Disney+ in October, including new episodes of Ayla & The Mirrors (Nov. 1) and weekly live broadcasts of Dancing with the Stars (Tuesdays).

The Most Cliched Halloween Costumes to Avoid This Year

Halloween is a few weeks away, so it’s time to ask yourself what you’re going to wear this year. This is a deeply revelatory question because Halloween is the one day a year when you can (almost) wear exactly what you want and no one will judge you. Except me. I’ll judge you hard.

There are three kinds of Halloween costume wearers. The first are people who don’t wear costumes. I won’t be discussing them because they’re beneath my contempt. The other two groups are people who wear something original and self-defining—my wife and I will be dressing Minnie and Roman Castavets from Rosemary’s Baby, for instance, a costume you can’t buy in a store that reflects our commitment to Satanic ritual. Most people, though, seem to like “funny,” pop culture costumes that other people will recognize; basically the lumpen masses of Halloween, trying to wear something so other people think, “I know what that is.” If you want to avoid a cliche-ridden Halloween, avoid the below trending costume gear.

Basic rule of Halloween: homemade is (usually) better

Even if your costume-making skills are sub-par and you have no ideas, a homemade costume is usually better than a store-bought one. Wearing a sheet with some mismatched eyeholes indicates you put in a little effort. If you just walk into Target on October 30 and say, “Yeah, I’ll be Mario!” I have no respect for you.

The exceptions are very elaborate pre-made costumes like this one and very stupid costumes, like this breathalyzer or this Nacho Libre.

In trying to determine the top costumes in 2024, I first checked out Google’s Frightgeist site. Google seems to be the media’s trusted source of Halloween costume research this year, but its list only compares costume-related searches from September 2023 to searches from 2024, so it’s a trend snapshot, perfect for avoiding the most over-used outfits.

I also checked Spirit Halloween’s Hottest Costume Trends for 2024 looking for some hard retail data, but it doesn’t say how it compiles its list, so I’ll assume it’s “costumes we’d like to sell this year.”

Here are the trending costumes from Frightgeist:

  • Shrunken Head Bob: Tiny-pated ghoul from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

  • Raygun: Australian Olympian.

  • CatNap: A character from indie horror game Poppy Playtime.

  • Delores: Beetlejuice’s ex-wife in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

  • Pomni: Main character of cartoon series The Amazing Digital Circus.

  • Envy: Character from Inside Out 2.

  • Red: Hero of Disney’s Descendants: Rise of Red.

  • Dr. Doom: Marvel comics supervillain.

  • Sabrina Carpenter: Pop star.

  • Lady Deadpool: From the movie Deadpool & Wolverine.

An interesting set of costumes. Lots of movie characters from all over the pop culture landscape. Even though it’s an election year, there’s no “Donald Trump eating a baby” costume or “Kamala Harris in prison” themed gear in evidence. Probably because Halloween is supposed to be fun and politics has become a brutal cultural death march.

My top pick for most interesting choice is actually America’s top pick too: Shrunken Head Bob. It’s an attention-grabbing special effects-based costume, and if you do it with a quality off-the-shelf outfit, some people will be mildly delighted for very little effort, which is what people seem to be going for. It’s likely too pricey and too much trouble to be overly represented.

I think the most cliche choice here is the Raygun costume. First because a lot of people are likely to be rocking her trademark green track suit, and secondly, it’s not really that clever, and third, it’s too late. Raygun’s fame was universal a few months ago, but it’s so one-note, it’s already being forgotten. So don’t wear it, unless you can do the dance perfectly.

Also: if I see someone dressed as Pomni, I’m not going to have any idea what they’re supposed to be, which defeats the point of pop-culture based costumes, unless you like explaining what The Amazing Digital Circus is to disinterested strangers. So not a cliche, but not a good choice either.

The hottest Halloween costume in Juneau, Alaska

Google’s Halloween map is searchable by region. The most trendy Halloween costume in Juneau, Alaska area is Pebbles Flintstone. What the hell is going on in Juneau, Alaska?

Spirit Halloween’s top costumes for 2024 offer little in the way of surprises. Here’s what the retailer picks for this year:

  • Deadpool & Wolverine costumes.

  • Inside Out 2 costumes.

  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice costumes.

  • The Amazing Digital Circus costumes.

  • Meme costumes: Skibidi Toilet, mob wife, country chic.

  • Terrifier costumes.

Spirit Halloween has an amazing variety of costumes, but they all look crappy. On one hand, I like this, because it reminds me of the vinyl, mask-based costumes of my youth which were barely costumes. Like this Jaws costume, where you dress as a shark wearing a picture of itself on a bib. On the other hand, those old costumes were for children, and you’re (presumably) an adult. Maybe aim a little higher than “cheap-as-hell costume from a movie that people know about” and avoid shopping at Spirit Halloween entirely.

I do like the inclusion of the Skibidi Toilet costume though. Kids are going to go nuts for this one, because it’s so obnoxious. In later years, they’re going to have pictures of the year they dressed as a toilet for Halloween, as an added bonus. If you’re over the age of 14, though, please do not wear this costume.
