How to Set Up Your Bedroom Like a Hotel Room (and Why You Should)

If you think you sleep better in a hotel room than at home, you’re not alone: According to one survey, about 73% of people surveyed reported better sleep when they crash in a hotel. While some of that might be exhaustion from travel or being away from stress factors, there’s something else going on here: Hotels have designed their rooms to be as sleep-friendly as possible. Some hotels even lean into this phenomenon, marketing “sleep retreats” and offering amenities like pillow menus. There are several reasons you might want your home to emulate the look and feel of a high-end hotel, but if sleep is your enemy, you can one more to the list: Setting up your bedroom like a hotel room can lead to better sleep.

Choose quality bedding

This is pretty obvious: Even mid-tier hotels offer luxurious mattresses, pillows, and linens that make crawling under the covers a comforting, pleasurable experience that scratchy old sheets and a mattress you’ve moved through six apartments will never replicate.

If you have an existential sleeping experience in a specific hotel, you might be able to buy their bedding directly from them to get the same experience at home. You can also make a note of the bedding and research whether you can buy it directly somewhere (my wife and I once simply asked a hotel what kind of sheets they used, then found them online).

But just by upgrading your mattress, sheets, and pillows, you’ll give yourself a sleeping experience closer to hotel living.

Make the room darker

Hotel rooms, you may have noticed, tend to be dim: Even when you turn on every light in the room it’s all warm, low-level light. There are usually heavy blackout curtains on the windows, too. The combined effect is a cocoon of soothing, warm light that transforms into an enveloping darkness with the touch of a button. Put simply, darker environments equal better sleep.

Adding blackout curtains to your bedroom can replicate that near-perfect darkness that makes a great night’s sleep just a little easier to attain, but you should also pay attention to the lighting. Getting that warm, dim hotel vibe is all about choosing light bulbs that aren’t harsh—avoiding “blue light” in your bedroom can lead to better sleep, so install some sleep-promoting light bulbs and make sure you’ve got the lighting set very low when you enter your bedroom every night.

Cool the room down more

Temperature has a big impact on how well you sleep—heat and humidity can interrupt sleep cycles, so hotels usually keep their rooms pretty cool. The ideal temperature for sleeping is probably lower than you think—it’s about 65 degrees. Setting your room’s climate control to hit that temp when you go to bed will give you that cozy hotel room vibe that encourages deep, restful sleep. Boosting air movement and ventilation with a ceiling fan, an oscillating fan, or by installing a window air conditioner can also help get you closer to that ideal temperature.

Plus, fans and air conditioners double as white noise, which can also block out the ambient sounds that can startle us out of a deep sleep. You can also add a white noise machine or use an app on your phone to block out even more noise.

Straighten things up

One final secret why hotel rooms are so restful? They’re tidy and cleaned regularly. Housekeeping showing up every day, putting everything back into place and cleaning things up can have an effect on how you perceive the environment. Studies have shown that clutter and mess can have a negative impact on our sleep, so the magical way hotel rooms stay clean and tidy contributes to getting better sleep. So if you’re looking to improve your sleep experience at home, do a weekly sweep of the bedroom and put things away, wipes down surfaces, and freshen the air to give it a sense of cleanliness and order.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

They’re almost all common letters from our mnemonic today. Only one isn’t, and it’s also fairly common.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

This is found in the sky.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There are two vowels.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with C.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with D.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is CLOUD.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and TOUCH, after which CLOUD was the most common word and best solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “of a bike or motorcycle, for example” and the answer contained all common letters.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was RIDER.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

Razer Is Making a Gaming Haptic Pad for Your Chair

Following Razer’s wide release of its controversial Snap Tap feature earlier this week, which arguably gives owners of its keyboards such an advantage in some games that Valve has banned it from Counter-Strike 2, the company is now announcing even more pro-level hardware. This includes the expected pro update to its Kraken V4 headset, but more interestingly, there’s also new tech like a laptop cooling stand and what I can only describe as a gaming massage pad.

Kraken V4 Pro

The Kraken V4 Pro is the most obvious announcement here, giving the existing Kraken V4 headset an OLED control hub that puts it in closer competition with the likes of other premium headsets like the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro. There’s also 9-zone RGB, as is typical of Razer, and conveniently, the option to connect via Bluetooth, USB, a 3.5mm cable, or Razer’s 2.4 GHz Hyperspeed wireless dongle. Active noise canceling is absent, and in its place are the same vibrational motors that give the headset rumble features akin to a controller. Razer makes a big deal of the immersion these provide, but at $399, that price tag is still a big ask for a headset without ANC.

Razer laptop cooling pad

Also a somewhat big ask is the new, $149 laptop cooling pad, which is essentially a laptop riser with fans built in and a USB hub included along its backside. Razer’s rendition aims to be more premium than the $30 versions you can buy from generic brands on Amazon, also coming equipped with a dust filter and three magnetic frames to ensure a tighter air seal with various sizes of laptops, plus adjustable motors with “smart cooling” that automatically changes fan speeds to balance noise with cooling.

Razer promises the cooling pad can lower temperatures by as much as 16 degrees and that noise is low thanks to a “vacuum tight” air seal, although time will tell—this type of device needs testing more than most, especially with such a premium attached to it.

Razer Freyja

Razer Freyja

Razer’s most exciting announcement, surprisingly, is more reasonably priced for what you get. Finally, Razer’s taking one of its more promising CES concepts and making it real. Originally teased earlier this year as Project Esther, the Razer Freyja bills itself as “the world’s first HD haptics gaming cushion,” and while there have been a small handful of similar products before, it does offer a lot for its $299 price point.

Rather than needing you to buy a whole haptic gaming chair, the Freyja is more like a massage pad, so you can lay it out over a chair you already own. Straps are adjustable to help it fit different chairs, and there are six haptic motors around the device, plus a control panel to adjust the intensity of the haptics.

I actually got to try the Freyja out when it was still the Esther, where I was impressed by its versatility. In Street Fighter 6, I felt hadoukens as they flew across the screen, and each punch genuinely made an impact on me. It wasn’t as simple as a binary on/off, too, as the direction and position of attacks and characters played into what I felt.

This works thanks to audio haptics, which means the pad can automatically generate vibrations based on the game’s audio, so you don’t have to worry about whether your game specifically supports the Freyja. Instead, the pad will use factors like bass intensity and which channel sound is coming out of to decide how to use its motors. It’s similar to how the vibration on the Kraken V4 Pro works, and this also means you can use the Freyja with music and movies, too. Still, Razer said it’s working with the devs of games like Hogwarts Legacy to design haptic experiences specifically for the Freyja, which is where its “HD” claims come in.

The Freyja connects over either Bluetooth or a Razer Hyperspeed 2.4 GHz wireless dongle, although it does need a cable for power. For safety, the cable is quick-release, so you won’t trip over it if you need to quickly get up.

Both the Freyja and the Kraken V4 Pro are available starting today, although a release date for the laptop cooling pad still has yet to be decided.

Here’s What You Get With a Meta Quest 3S Pre-Order

Virtual Reality has become more accessible thanks to Meta’s Quest devices. Up until recently, the Meta Quest 3 had been the latest device from Meta, but other than being an expensive fun toy to play (or to use to watch porn), it couldn’t deliver much. But after Meta Connect 2024, Meta doubled down on VR and released a new, more affordable VR headset—the Meta Quest 3S—as well as upcoming updates for their latest headsets.

The Meta Quest 3S is available for pre-order for $299.99 on Amazon and comes with the upcoming Batman: Arkham Shadow and three months of Meta Quest+ included with your preorder set to release on Oct. 15.

You can think of the new Quest 3S as the budget version of the original Quest 3. It has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, Touch Plus controllers (except there’s no ring around your fingers), and runs all of the same apps. The battery life is slightly better (from 2.2 to 2.5 hours according to Meta), it has a button to go from AR to VR, and comes with three camera sensors on each side. However, the display resolution is lower with 1,832 x 1,920 pixels (same as the Quest 2), a more narrow field of view of 96 degrees (compared to 110), and there’s no depth sensor.

Meta says the Quest 3S is replacing the Quest 2 and they’re ending sales of the Quest Pro, but they will keep selling both older models until they run out of stock. Although the Meta Quest 3S comes out on Oct. 15, the Batman game is not set to release until Oct. 22. The regular Quest 3 will continue to cost $499 for the 512GB version, but will also come bundled with Batman: Arkham Shadow.

My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: Fitbit Google Ace LTE

Gamifying boring but necessary life tasks has been a thing for a while. Perhaps the most well-known option for fitness in recent years is Fitbit. Since Google now owns Fitbit, they’ve been making fitness smartwatches, bringing the same idea for kids with the Fitbit Ace LTE. This kid-friendly smartwatch came out this summer and is discounted for the first time, currently $199.95 (originally $229.95), the lowest price yet according to price-checking tools.

The Fitbit Google Ace LTE focuses on making active lifestyles fun for kids, offering engaging games and animated digital animals. It has a screen time limit—if you’re playing a game, you need to reach a specified activity goal every five to 10 minutes before you can play on. For the parents, it includes a neat feature that lets you track the smartwatch with its LTE GPS signal. The smartwatch supports texts and calls, is compatible with Android or iOS, and has parental controls. The Fitbit Google Ace LTE is not perfect, however. It can be sluggish at times; there is no compatible app for music or sleep tracking; and the rewards system can be a bit much—all of this according to PCMag’s “excellent” review.

The watch is designed for kids between the ages of seven and 11 and you’ll need a $9.99 monthly subscription (although they sometimes offer annual Ace Pass subscriptions for 50% off) which is what provides access to games, GPS location tracking, and LTE services. As the parent or guardian, you’ll need to download the Fitbit Ace app to set up the watch and subscribe to the Ace Pass data plan.

If you don’t pay for the subscription, you’ll only have access to basic movement and step tracking, but at that point you might as well get a Fitbit Ace 3 for $73.99 (originally $79).

How to Incorporate the ‘Whimsigoth’ Aesthetic Into Your Decor

Rooted in the Bohemian and Gothic design movements of the 1970s, “whimsigoth” interior design is a bold style you can find in ’90s films like Practical Magic. As ’90s design gains a renewed popularity, whimsigoth aesthetic is making a comeback with its edgier take on the floral and nature-inspired elements of grandmillennial style. Whimsigoth is about choosing the dark, mysterious details that strum on your romantic Victorian heartstrings, with heavy drapes and saturated color. With all that darkness, it’s important not to skimp on the whimsy, to even out the intense color palette.

Choose velvety textiles

Whimsigoth is all about plush, luxurious materials, like velvet and other deep-pile materials. Soft lines and a romantic feel are what you’re after, so opulent-feeling materials should take center stage. Velvet upholstered furniture is one option for adding some whimsigoth style to your space, but you can also choose accent pillows or drapes to add some velvety texture to a room.

Use jewel tones

Darker jewel tones will help keep your decor firmly in the whimsigoth camp. Adding a large area rug in a jewel-tone pattern can help, but smaller accents like a round mirror or an ottoman can also bring a jewel-toned color palette in. The important thing to keep in mind isn’t so much a completely matching set, but a color family that can be pulled together.

Stack patterns

Add complementary patterns that can work together. Bring in some peel-and-stick wallpaper, not just for walls, but as a shelf liner, or on an old cabinet’s doors with a darker jewel-tone pattern. You can also add a patterned throw blanket or a table runner to layer in some pattern.

Add some lace

Incorporating lace details into your decor can help to achieve maximum whimsigoth. Doilies are an obvious choice, but lace curtains or a room divider can also add a lacy accent. Whimisgoth is a maximalist style, so feel free to go a little overboard on this one. Adding lace accents to lighting, table settings, and window dressing are all ways to inject a Victorian feel into your home.

Keep your lighting soft

Lighting is key to creating your cozy space. A curvy, Victorian-style lamp with a soft white bulb can help you create the right ambiance. You can also choose a sconce with a rounded base or a stained glass floor lamp. Old-style chandeliers are also a great whimsigoth lighting option.

Embrace celestial motifs

Celestial symbols are central to whimsigoth style. While you don’t need to go over the top with star and moon motifs, you can add some celestial patterns and shapes to your overall design. Try a a star lamp or a phases of the moon clock.

Don’t forget the whimsy

Adding your own touch to your whimsigoth space will make it feel more like home. If there are particular elements of Gothic design that you particularly like, add them in. Corvids, moths, floral motifs, cats, and owls all fit within these theme. Think mystical, nature-inspired, and Victorian for inspiration in adding your own touches.
