What’s New on Max in October 2024

It’s time to head back to Salem’s Lot: After a lengthy delay that frustrated fans, the filmmakers, and Stephen King alike, the new adaptation of the horror master’s seminal 1975 vampire novel is finally hitting the Max streaming service in October, just in time for prime spooky season.

Directed by Gary Dauberman, who helmed the three films in the Annabelle series and co-wrote the recent two-film adaptation of King’s It, the straight-to-streaming Salem’s Lot is the third adaptation of the book, after earlier miniseries takes in 1979 and 2004. It arrives on Max Oct. 3. (Incidentally, the aforementioned Annabelle movies as well as It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two start streaming on Max on Oct. 1).

If you’re looking for a bit of counter-programming, also arriving on Max this month is the third season of the gentle, melancholy comedy drama Somebody Somewhere (Oct. 27); The Franchise (Oct. 6), an eight-part satire about the making of a fictional superhero movie from Veep creator Armando Iannucci; and a new comedy special from Seth Meyers (date TBA).

Here’s everything else coming to Max in October, including the steaming launch of recent thrillers MaXXXine (Oct. 18) and M. Night Shyamalan’s meme-machine Trap (Oct. 25).

This Samsung Galaxy Laptop Is $450 Off Right Now

With October Prime Day just around the corner, big retailers are already popping out early deals to hook you into their sales, memberships, and reward programs. Best Buy is no exception, with their fall sale starting this Friday. If you can’t wait until then to get a new laptop, Best Buy currently has a deal on the Samsung Galaxy Book3 360 for $799.99 (originally $1,249.99), a good deal for people who like to work hands-on on creative projects.

The Galaxy Book series is one of Samsung’s flagship laptops. They recently released the new Book4 lineup earlier this year, which makes the Book3 the older, more reasonably priced option. One of the versions of the Galaxy Book series is the 360, which is usually the most budget-friendly option of the lineup. It’s a laptop/tablet hybrid—the touchscreen can go back nearly 360 degrees to be used as a tablet. It doesn’t come with a stylus, so you’ll have to buy that separately.

The processor is powerful, with a 13th generation Intel Core i7, which is enough power to multitask and create media projects comfortably. The 16GB RAM is powerful enough for running graphics-heavy games (although the Intel Iris Xe graphic cards is only entry-level) or demanding software programs. The touchscreen is my personal favorite size of 13.3 inches, with an AMOLED screen offering a total resolution of 2880 x 1800. You can get up to 16 hours of battery life, according to Samsung. The 512GB storage is expandable up to a 1TB SSD or 2TB using the microSD card reader on the device if you need more space. You can connect to it with Bluetooth, USB, HDMI, and Thunderbolt 4 connectors.

This is a great price for a solid laptop that is just a year old and ideal for people who work on-the-go and need a touchscreen. But if this one isn’t your cup of tea, check out Best Buy’s other laptops.

My Four Favorite Laundry Hacks

Sometimes, you come across a solution to a problem that doesn’t really exist. Viral videos would have you believe you should mix an abundance of chemicals in your toilet or fill your air fryer with water to clean them. You should do neither of those things, namely because they’re dangerous; other cleaning hacks might not be dangerous, but are unnecessarily labor intensive or questionable in their effectiveness. After a few run-ins with these so-called tricks, it’s easy to start being suspicious of all viral tips. There are several laundry hacks I use, though, that really have saved me time or maximized my results.

The easiest way to clean your washing machine

Before delving into the actual laundry hacks, you need a clean base from which to start—a dirty washer won’t be great at cleaning clothes. I’ve messed around with a few methods and prefer sprinkling some baking soda in the drum, then adding a cup of vinegar to the detergent tray and running an empty load. This hack is all over social media, and it’s one that works. Clothes smell fresher after a wash, the machine looks newer, and it has no ill effects. Vinegar can’t replace all the store-bought cleaners you need in your home, but it replicates what washing machine cleaning tablets do for much less money.

Always keep your towels separate from your clothes

Once the machine is freshened up, it’s time to get those clothes going. The first tip I swear by—but only recently came around on—is never washing towels with regular clothes. I used to think this was an arbitrary rule that would cost me double the time and money by forcing me to do two washes for no reason, but there is a reason. Actually, there are a few. The first is that washing them all together can result in towel lint on your clothes. The second is that drying them together can be a real problem. I was noticing that my clothes had an odd scent after coming out of the dryer lately but couldn’t figure out why until I saw someone on Reddit mention that because towels hold so much more water than clothes, drying them all together means you’ll be over-drying your shirts and pants, essentially burning them a bit while they spin around, waiting for the towels to dry. When I started doing a separate laundry load for just towels, the smell went away. As we move into fall, I’m going to start washing my heavier items—sweaters, sweatshirts, sweatpants—in their own load, too, for the same reasons.

Toss white tennis balls in the dryer

It’s long been recommended to toss a tennis ball or two into the dryer to help soften your fabrics and even speed up the drying time. What isn’t always mentioned, though, is that some tennis balls—particularly newer ones—can transfer their neon dye to your clothing. To be safe (and still achieve that coveted softness), use white tennis balls instead.

The best tips for de-wrinkling laundry

Frustrated with my clothes coming out of the straight out of the dryer all wrinkled, I went searching for a hack and landed on what initially seemed like a dubious suggestion on TikTok: When the dryer finishes up, toss two ice cubes in and run it again for 10 minutes. The idea is that as the ice melts, it will serve to steam your clothes—and it does. I noticed a wrinkle reduction when I did this; you can also do this with any clothes that need a quick sprucing up before being worn, whether you’ve just washed them or not.

You can also use an iron, of course—but I don’t own a tradition cloths iron. I do have a straightening iron for my hair, however, and I’ve been using it to de-wrinkle my clothes in a pinch for years. It works great, as long as you treat it like a regular iron, monitoring the temperature, adjusting based on the label’s care instructions, and placing protective rags between the plates and the garment when necessary. This is especially helpful when you’re traveling, because a flatiron takes up very little space in your bag (and you may have planned to bring it along anyway).

The Easiest Way to Shred Meat Is With a Stand Mixer

I’ve always preferred shredded meats to the sliced or cubed variety. I choose shredded chicken for my tacos and shredded pork for my bánh mì, and shredded chicken salad is by far the superior preparation method—this despite the fact that shredding meat is undoubtedly more work that cutting it, but it doesn’t have to be if you use a stand mixer for the job.

The first time I shredded chicken with forks, I remember thinking, “oh, this isn’t so bad,” until a few minutes later, as my palms developed reddened fork handle-dents. It’s not that the act of shredding is complicated or particularly hard to figure out, but if you need to do it for more than maybe two hunks of meat, it can be a pain. Tossing it in a stand mixer instead is entirely worth it.

I first learned of this method in a video similar to this one a couple weeks ago, focused on making a shredded chicken salad. The person fitted the stand mixer with a whisk attachment, switched on the machine, added their ingredients, and scooped out the finished salad. My initial reaction was that the completed chicken salad looked a bit too smooth, like it had lost its texture. The video maker essentially admitted as much, but was otherwise pleased with the results.

I was intrigued enough to try shredding in a stand mixer myself—with a few modifications.

How to shred chicken with a stand mixer

I think that the whisk attachment was the primary culprit for the over-mixing in that video. A stand mixer is incredibly powerful, and you have to be careful about timing and how fast the machine is going to avoid going too hard, whatever you’re making.

I decided to try stand-shredding for pulled pork, which is much fattier than chicken, and thus even easier to accidentally over-shred. (You might note that slow cooker pulled pork falls apart readily, which is true; I’ll reiterate that it’s not that pulling apart the meat is hard, it’s just a lot to do if you have a large quantity.)

I tossed the meat into the mixing bowl and used a paddle attachment to start shredding it. With no exaggeration, my pork was nearly ready in fewer than 10 seconds on the lowest possible setting. I added my favorite barbecue sauce and switched on the machine for another 5 seconds. Done: The pulled pork was perfect.

The best stand mixer for shredding meat

What does this mean for us shredded meat lovers? Well, it means you may want to get yourself a stand mixer if you don’t already have one. I think this method is an absolute game changer for tougher, drier meats like chicken, and a very reasonable option for tender meats when you have three or more pounds of it to shred.

I’ve had my Kitchen Aid Professional 6-quart for more than a decade, and while newer models are quieter, this ol’ girl is as effective as ever. Though I can’t find the 6-quart model in stock anymore, the 5-quart is a alternative.

This is the best way to shred chicken and pork

I always include clean-up when I’m deciding if a gadget or appliance helps with speedy cooking,  and the amount of time saved here cannot be argued. Consider the cutting board, the dripping juice, the knives, and the forks, compared to just the bowl and the paddle using the mixer method. The bowl prevents juices lost to the cutting board, and the paddle attachment is easy to clean. Between shredding and cleaning time, I’d estimate I saved 10 to 20 minutes.

Beyond that, the mixer does the stirring for you, so you can drop in chopped ingredients and sauces for a simple, effective multitask. Essentially, using a stand mixer takes all the tough work out of preparing a pulled meat dish, and makes cooking big batches more accessible too. I would absolutely suggest it to older cooks or anyone with reduced shoulder mobility or arm strength.

Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Monday, September 23, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for September 23, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is easier; I got it in three. Beware, there are spoilers below for September 23, Wordle #1,192! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

There are four common letters from our mnemonic today. The fifth is also pretty common.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

A gaming platform, or a form of water.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There are two vowels.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with S.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with M.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is STEAM.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE. I thought I probably wasn’t looking for additional vowels, so I guessed SLANT to eliminate common consonants. There are a number of words that include the letters S, A, E, and T, but only a few worked with the placement of the vowels: STEAD, STEAK, STEAM. I guessed the latter, which was the solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was easier. The hint was “to instruct” and the answer contained four common letters and one pretty common letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was TEACH.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

Wordle alternatives

If you can’t get enough of five-letter guessing games and their kin, the best Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:

The Best (and Worst) Types of Food to Cook for a Date

Cuffing season 2024 has begun—you’ve got a solid amount of time to woo someone into being your cold weather cuddler, holiday party date, or maybe-forever partner. Food can help. Once you’ve had a few restaurant or bar dates, you might decide they’re worthy of setting foot in your home for a meal. That’s a big move, and I’d like to help you not screw it up. Here’s my best advice on cooking for dates this cuffing season.

What not to cook for your date

I don’t usually like to lead with the negative, but knowing our boundaries will help us focus on the playing ground.

Avoid soup. Listen, I love soup, so if I were going to break a rule, it would be this one. However, soup is really difficult to eat gracefully. There’s hunching over the bowl, dribbling, slurping, and if there are noodles involved, splashing. Those all could lead to stains on clothing and your date has probably worn their best outfit. It’s not cute food. Save it for after the cuffing.

Loads of seeds. Randomly specific? Not if you’ve ever had an everything bagel on a date before. Then it’s a traumatic memory. Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, tiny grains—that’s you, quinoa—they like to get stuck right in the middle of your two front teeth. If a recipe asks for a spoonful of sesame seeds, maybe opt for a dash of sesame oil instead. It could be a rom-com moment in the making, but maybe not the one you want.

Keep it light on the fiber. Kale, broccoli, cauliflower are nutritious and filling foods. However, these cruciferous veg (and others) are to blame for bloating and gas. I don’t have to explain why farts have no place at a date.

Allergens, spice, and dietary restrictions. Again, more of a reminder. Just ask, and if they have restrictions, then do yourself a favor and write them down so you don’t have to second guess it when you’re cooking.

About garlic. This would be the second guideline I would potentially break, but by popular request from my friends, garlic is a no-no. As a compromise, I’d suggest a dash of garlic powder for flavor instead of the fresh stuff.

Date night cooking tips

Now that we have some of the greatest offenders out of the way, let’s think about what types of cooking and food are going to fuel conversation, and not drag down the vibe.

Appliance cooking. Take full advantage of your slow cooker, Instant Pot, or air fryer to lessen your workload. This allows you to serve piping hot food, without having to have your freshly made-up face or perfectly set hair over a steaming pot. Likewise, these appliances will keep any stove top splashes or oily splatters from wrecking your outfit. Possibly the biggest advantage to using an appliance is that they’re designed to be set-it-and-forget-it, or at the very most, low maintenance. You can do a quick check, shake, or stir and walk away. This leaves you very open to pouring wine and continuing your riveting conversation.

On light fare. Another request that I agree with to a point is serving salad as dinner, and avoiding generally heavy meals. If I went to someone’s home and they served me salad for dinner I would be reconsidering everything and mapping the nearest Taco Bell. I, however, am not a normal eater, and I completely understand the logic behind light food for a dinner date. This is your call, and maybe read the room. If your date eats light normally then I think an interesting salad and some optional elements on the side is going to be great. If you’ve noticed your date has a more robust eating style or enjoys rich foods then I don’t think a pasta dish or reasonable serving of steak is going to put them into a food coma by 8 p.m.

Make it special. I’m not saying you have to buy a porterhouse, but your date should feel like this meal is a bit of an occasion. Even if you can’t splurge on ingredients, you can provide attention to detail and presentation. Serve a whole roasted chicken, add some garnishes, or just use pretty dishware. Don’t forget to set the table with a butter keeper and flaky salt.

Like all advice, these are guidelines and there are exceptions.

Great date night meals

Here are some solid choices for your next date night.

Spaghetti al limone. Fresh flavors, easy to access ingredients, and a little bit of richness make this pasta dish an easy way to impress someone. Once the pasta has boiled this recipe comes together in a flash so there’s no need to prepare much ahead of time.

The most robust salad. You already know about my eating habits, so I recommend flipping around the ratios for your date night salad. Instead of mostly leafy greens with a smattering of chicken and cheese floating around, bulk up the chicken, add some quartered baby potatoes, and don’t be shy with the olives.

Air fryer lobster. Treat your date to a proper meal of lobster tails. You don’t have to worry about fussing over a huge pot of boiling water or hearing the sea creature “scream” either. Just split the tail, add butter and air fry those tails for less than 10 minutes. Light opulence, achieved.

Chicken thighs and rice casserole.

Buttermilk dry-brined chicken. Buttermilk makes for a great marinade. In this recipe you can use powdered buttermilk to build a concentrated marinade from the chicken’s juices resulting in tender meat and beautifully browned skin.

Foolproof Instant Pot risotto. Take full advantage of the hands-off nature of your Instant Pot. After the initial sautéing, the rice and liquids go in, and the lid shuts. For the next 50 minutes or so it’s just you and your date.

Fitbit Premium Members Can Access Free Peloton Classes

Peloton now offers some of its digital classes to Fitbit Premium members, as of September 2024. Here’s what we know, including what classes are available, how to access them, and whether it makes more sense to pay for Fitbit Premium or for a Peloton app membership.

What types of Peloton classes are available to Fitbit Premium members?

If you’re used to thinking of Peloton as an exercise bike, you may have missed that the company offers many types of video classes on its devices and via its app. This means you could conceivably watch the video for a cycling class while you’re on an exercise bike at your gym, or pick up some dumbbells and do a strength class in your living room.

The following class types are currently available from the Fitbit app (for Premium members):

  • Strength (typically with dumbbells, but some are bodyweight)

  • Cycling (meant to be done on any spin bike)

  • Outdoor cardio (audio-only workouts for walking, walk+run, and running)

  • Cardio (HIIT with bodyweight moves)

  • Rowing (like on a rowing machine)

  • Yoga

  • Tread (treadmill classes)

  • Barre (strength-ish classes, usually bodyweight only, often with a lower body focus)

  • Stretching

  • Meditation (some classes are audio-only, some are video)

How will I be able to access these classes?

When you open your Fitbit app, you’ll see the classes in there. Tap the Coach tab, and then scroll down until you see “Peloton classes,” and tap “See all.”

Peloton’s announcement back in August said that “[n]ew content will be added to the app incrementally.” No word yet on whether the Peloton content will eventually include everything you could get from the Peloton app, or whether it will be a limited or rotating selection.

How many Peloton classes do you get in the Fitbit app?

Here’s what I see in the app right now:

  • Strength: 10 classes, ranging from 10 minutes to 45 minutes. Seven of them use dumbbells; the other three are bodyweight only.

  • Cycling: 21 classes, ranging from 5 minutes (a warmup and a cooldown) to 45 minutes. Most classes are 20 or 30 minutes.

  • Outdoor cardio: 10 classes, ranging from 15 to 45 minutes. Three of them are power walks, while the others are runs or a mix of walk + run.

  • Cardio: 3 classes, ranging from 10 to 20 minutes

  • Rowing: 18 classes, ranging from 5 to 30 minutes. Most are between 15 and 30 minutes.

  • Yoga: 8 classes, ranging from 10 to 30 minutes

  • Tread (treadmill): 20 classes, ranging from 5 to 45 minutes. Most are 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Barre: 4 classes, ranging from 10 to 45 minutes.

  • Stretching: 4 classes, ranging from 10 to 30 minutes.

  • Meditation: 3 classes, 10 to 15 minutes. One of the 10-minute classes is audio-only, while the other two classes are on video.

Can you get free Peloton classes with a free Fitbit account?

Peloton said the classes will be available to Fitbit Premium members in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, and that it’s a “multi-year” partnership. The announcement also noted a “select group of Peloton classes will be available to Fitbit users without a Premium subscription, as well.”

When I log in without a premium subscription, I see five types of classes, and I can access one class each. I expect these might rotate out, but I’m currently seeing these:

  • Strength: 15 minute Core Strength with Selena Samuela

  • Cycling: 20 minute Dance Music Ride with Hannah Corbin

  • Outdoor cardio: 30 minute Power Walk with Jon Hosking

  • Yoga: 20 minute Restorative Yoga with Chelsea Jackson Roberts

  • Tread: 15 minute Beginner Run with Jess Sims

If you tap “See all,” you can view the same classes that are available to Premium users, but you can’t actually play the class videos unless you update to Fitbit Premium.

How does the cost of Fitbit Premium compare to the cost of the Peloton app?

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth upgrading to Fitbit Premium for the classes, it’s probably not—you don’t get the full library of Peloton classes with the Fitbit app. But if you’d like to do the math:

  • Fitbit Premium is $9.99/month, or $79.99/year. Fitbit devices come with a free 6-month subscription to Premium.

  • Peloton App+ access is $24.99/month, and includes access to Peloton’s full library of classes, including as many cycling, treadmill, and rower classes as you want to take.

  • Peloton App One access is $12.99/month, and its biggest limitation is that you’re limited to just three bike, treadmill, or rower classes each month. The other classes, like strength, HIIT, yoga, and outdoor running, are unlimited.

Whether it’s worth switching from the Peloton app will depend on how much of its content makes it to Fitbit Premium users. If it ends up being a pretty full library, or if you only want to take the occasional class, Fitbit Premium will be the better deal on paper. But the companies aren’t spilling all the details yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Do Peloton members get anything from this partnership?

There was one sentence about current Peloton members in the announcement: “Throughout the partnership, Peloton Members will receive special Google Pixel Watch and Fitbit Charge 6 device offers.”

Five Portable Batteries to Buy If Your Anker Was Recalled

If you own an Anker portable battery, take note: Your battery may pose a fire hazard, and should be disposed of immediately.

The company issued a recall notice for three of its batteries on Friday: Anker says some of the lithium ion batteries used in these models may be a fire risk due to a “manufacturing defect.” Affected units can overheat, which can melt plastic, lead to smoke, and, in some cases, catch fire.

Anker believes the issue only affects a small number of batteries in these units, produced between Jan. 3 and Sept. 17 of this year, but is recalling all of them to be safe.

Which Anker batteries are recalled?

According to Anker, the following three portable batteries are recalled:

  • Anker 334 MagGo Battery (PowerCore 10K), Model: A1642

  • Anker Power Bank (20,000mAh, 22.5W, Built-In USB-C Cable), Model: A1647

  • Anker MagGo Power Bank (10,000mAh, 7.5W, Stand), Model: A1652

If any of these model numbers match your battery, head to this Anker site and verify the battery’s 16-digit serial number, which you can find on the bottom of the battery. If your battery’s serial number isn’t 16 digits, it isn’t part of this recall. In addition, the serial number does not contain the letters “O” or “I.”

How to get a replacement from Anker

Anker says it’s using a new distributor for its products going forward, which should, in theory, nip the issue in the bud. If you would like a replacement for your affected unit, Anker requires the following:

  • Proof of purchase, or at the very least an order confirmation for your battery. If it was a gift, Anker says to contact the purchaser, which seems like a bit of an unnecessary step after supplying customers with portable fire starters.

  • A picture of the model number.

  • The serial number of your battery.

Whether or not you get a replacement, Anker implores you to dispose of your battery safely. Consult Anker’s recall site for information on how to dispose of batteries in your area.

Portable batteries to buy instead

If you lost your original receipt, or you’ve simply lost trust in this battery pack, and you’re looking to buy another portable charger, there are plenty on the market to choose from. Our sister site PCMag has tested many of these options, and narrowed down its top five. Two of these choices, funnily enough, are Anker products, but they are not affected by the recall. You can consider one of these packs, but if not, there are three other options on this list to choose from.

Belkin’s BoostCharge is a 5,000mAh MagSafe battery pack that can magnetically connect to the back of your iPhone, and charge at 7.5W. (A bit slow, but when the battery is literally connected to your phone at all times, it should be fine.) Otterbox offers its charger in sizes from 5,000mAh all the way up to 20,000mAh, while Nimble offers a 10,000mAh battery in a tiny form factor, plus two 20W USB-C ports that can charge two devices at once. Anker’s 737 is expensive, but 24,000mAh with 140W power delivery, good for charging larger devices like a laptop, while its USB-C portable charger offers a 10,000mAh battery with two types of USB ports.
