The Delicious Way I Used up the Last of My Summer Peaches

Early fall is a bittersweet time for peach fanatics like myself. I relish the cooler weather, but I know this is the end of another fantastic peach season, and the start of a long wait until the next one begins. Personally, I used up my last summer peaches making a gorgeous, four-ingredient peach danish.

Someone once asked me: assuming we’re talking about peak ripeness, what fruit do you think is best? Without hesitation, I said the peach. When you get a batch of good peaches, there’s nothing daunting about finishing a dozen in a week. They’re sweet with a touch of acid and super juicy, and the texture offers the perfect amount of resistance without going mealy. I usually enjoy eating them fresh, but recently I wasn’t eating them fast enough—within a day of purchasing a bunch from the Trader Joe’s in Brooklyn, they started to get noticeably ripe. Too ripe.

I decided to skin and pit them for freezing, but I kept some slices for a quick peach dessert. What I didn’t expect was that I’d be thawing those same frozen peaches within a few days so that I could make more of these faux peach danishes. This recipe is an absolute stunner: suspiciously simple to make, and you only need four ingredients.

How to make easy peach danishes

Technically, these aren’t “true” danishes, but they sure are close. For the pastry, I use store-bought, freezer section puff pastry because it’s easy and tastes good. I remove the skin when I bake with peaches, but you don’t have to. It’s easy to do: Just score an “x” at the base of the peach and give it a 30 second blanch in a pot of boiling water. Rinse the peach in cold water and peel the skin off from the “x” mark you made. Pit the peach and cut it into slices.

From here, it’s just a matter of making the cheese filling and putting the parts together. I made a lightly sweetened cream cheese filling, which couldn’t be easier: Powdered sugar and cream cheese blend easily to make a rich, sweet, and tangy filling that plays well with any summer fruit. Add a dollop to some puff pastry squares and top with peach slices.

Peach slices and cream cheese filling on raw puff pastry.

This quick Danish bakes tall and produces a dynamic presentation with pointed edges and a sunken fruity center. The textures and flavors add more drama. There’s the brittle crunch from the pastry’s edge, the silky hidden filling, and the bright, tender fruit to add contrast. It’s the perfect breakfast with coffee or an appropriate pick me up in the afternoon.

These are best enjoyed the day they’re made, as the leftovers are lackluster. Luckily, they take barely any time to assemble, so you can easily make them fresh.

Easy Peach Danish Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed

  • 2 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

  • 1 or 2 peaches, peeled and sliced

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Make a sweet cream cheese filling by stirring the powdered sugar together with the soft cream cheese.

2. Lay out a sheet of thawed puff pastry on a bit of flour to prevent sticking. Cut it into six equal rectangles. Place the rectangles on the parchment lined pastry sheet with an inch or two of space in between. (You can brush the outer edges with an egg wash if you’d like extra browning.)

3. Dollop a heaping tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture into the center of each rectangle and place a couple peach slices on top. Bake the danishes for about 15 minutes, or until well-browned and fully risen.

Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Tuesday, September 17, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for September 17, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is easier; I got it in three. Beware, there are spoilers below for September 17, Wordle #1,186! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

They’re almost all common letters from our mnemonic today! Only one isn’t, and it’s also fairly common.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

Something or someone that looks good, as in: “She’s a ____.”

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There are three vowels.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with B.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with T.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is BEAUT.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and TOUCH, which left BEAUT as the best solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was easier. The hint was “made by bees” and the answer contained four common letters and one uncommon letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was HONEY.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

How to Move, Resize, and Color App Icons and Widgets in iOS 18

With iOS 18, Apple is finally opening up the iPhone home screen. You still have to adhere to a grid, but other than that, you can freely place app icons, remove text labels, get dark mode icons, and even tint app icons with a color of your own choice! Here’s how to make the most out of the new home screen experience on your iPhone and iPad.

Place your apps anywhere

Apps and widgets are now finally free to go wherever. So long as you stay to a grid pattern, you can now place app icons only in the bottom part of your screen, or just on the sides, or in a zig-zag. The world is your oyster. This applies to the widgets as well.

The only limits are that you still can’t overlap icons or create custom spacing between them. But still, you now have the freedom to place app icons in any format you want, and you really should experiment to see what works well with your wallpaper.

Arranging app icons still works in the same way. You press and hold the app icon and move it to where you’d like. If there are other icons where you drop it, they will move around accordingly.

Remove app labels for a clean look

One of the best aesthetic updates in iOS 18 is the ability to remove text labels for apps and widgets. You can do this by switching the home screen to the new Large mode. This makes the apps and widgets bigger, and the labels will disappear.

  1. Press and hold the on the background to enter jiggle mode.

  2. Tap the Edit button in the top-left corner.

  3. Choose Customize.

  4. Switch to the Large option from the new popup menu.

Switch all app icons to dark mode

Apple has designed dark mode icons for all its apps, and it will even let third-party developers define specific dark mode app icons. If an app doesn’t have a dark mode icon, Apple will automatically flip the colors (it’s a hack, but not a bad one).

Again, from the jiggle mode, tap the Edit button and choose Customize. From the editing menu, switch to the Dark option for the app icons.

While here, you can also choose to only enable the dark mode wallpaper, or only use dark mode icons, by tapping the Sun icon in the top-left corner of the popup menu.

Change the color of your app icons

Change the color tint for all iPhone app icons.

No, this is not the Android skin pack from 2014. Trust me, I used to be a connoisseur of Android app icons and skin packs. In iOS 18, Apple has added an ability to tint the color of icons on the home screen. This only works with app icons in dark mode, though.

Press and hold the background to enter jiggle mode, tap the Edit button from the top and choose Customize.

Now, from the menu, choose the Tinted option. First, Apple will automatically apply a tint color based on a prominent color from your wallpaper. This, in my experience, is usually quite loud and, well, not pretty.

But you can enhance the result in like 10 seconds. Tap the Eyedropper tool from the top, and choose a color from your wallpaper that’s not quite as harsh (this step is optional, but it helps as a starting point).

Once you’ve picked your color, tone down the intensity to about 50%. I’ve found this to be the sweet spot. You can also use the color slider to choose any color that you want.

Play around with it, and you’re sure to find something great that works for your background.

Change the size of widgets

Change widget size on the iPhone home screen.

Credit: Khamosh Pathak

Finally, iOS 18 lets you resize widgets without going through the whole dance of deleting and replacing them (that is, if the widget has multiple size options).

Tap and hold any app icon or a widget, and you will find a new bar in the context menu that shows all available sizes. Choose a size and watch as the widget instantly transforms.

If you’re in jiggle mode, you can also just grab a handle at the bottom edge of your widget. Simply pull the handle out to expand the widget or pull it back in to make the widget smaller.

Use This Trick to Drop Safari’s Picture-in-Picture Videos Anywhere on Your Screen

Safari used to be my favorite browser on Mac, but a few months ago, I made the switch to Firefox. One of my reasons for swapping was how Safari handles picture-in-picture videos. When a video enters picture-in-picture mode, Safari allows you to snap it to any of your screen’s four corners, but normally, it won’t let you place the frame anywhere else unless you dig into your settings. It turns out that Safari does support custom picture-in-picture frame placement, but the feature isn’t well explained.

How to use Picture-in-Picture video in Safari

In Safari, picture-in-picture videos exit the browser tab and appear in a floating box that stays on-screen even when you’re using other apps. This is helpful for multi-tasking, such as when you’re taking notes while watching a video. To use picture-in-picture, play the video, find the audio button in the address bar, click and hold it, mouse over Enter Picture-in-Picture, and release. If your video streaming site of choice doesn’t show this option, try using the PiPfier browser extension to increase your browser’s compatibility. You can also use PiPifier to more easily launch a video in picture-in-picture, just by navigating to a webpage with a video and selecting Run PiPifier under Safari’s Search button menu (the box with an arrow pointing upwards sticking out of it).

Once you see your video in a floating frame, it’s in picture-in-picture mode. If you try to drag it, you’ll notice that it snaps to one of the four corners of your Mac’s screen, but won’t go anywhere else.

To place Safari picture-in-picture videos anywhere you want, hold the Command key on your keyboard and click-and-drag the picture-in-picture frame. When you release the frame, it will remain where you placed it. I learned about this tip through a Reddit post, and it’s already changed how I view Safari videos. Now, when my MacBook is connected to my 34-inch ultrawide monitor, I can place Safari picture-in-picture videos directly in my line-of-sight instead of banishing them to the far corners of the display.

Know that other browsers, such as Chrome and Firefox, support this functionality without the keyboard shortcut. With those browsers, you can click-and-drag any picture-in-picture video and place it anywhere without issue.

These Samsung Gaming Monitors Are up to $700 Off

It’s a good time to be a gamer looking for a new gaming monitor—that is, if you have a bit of discretionary income. The wildly over-powered Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor is $1,099.99 (originally $1,799.99), but if you don’t care for an OLED panel, the just-as-comically-wide Samsung Odyssey G9 gaming monitor is currently $799.99 (originally $1,299.99) after a $500 discount.

This Odyssey G9 gaming monitor was released in January of this year and is a refreshed version of the original Odyssey G9 gaming monitor with a new stand, HDMI 2.1, a black design, and a cheaper launching price of $1,299.99 (the 2020 version launched at $1,479).

The 2024 Odyssey G9 is a gamer’s dream, with a 1ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, Nvidia’s and AMD’s adaptive sync technologies, and a huge 49-inch diagonal screen with a sharp curvature of 1000R and a 178-degree viewing angle. Because of its curve, the monitor measures 11.5 inches front to back. So make sure you have enough space on your desk before you decide to buy it.

The VA LCD panel and matter screen has a 5,120 by 1,440 resolution with a 32:9 aspect ratio, which is equivalent to two side-by-side 2,560 x 1,440 monitors. If you’re an Xbox Series X or PS5 gamer, be mindful that they output at 16:9, meaning you’ll have empty space on the sides of the screen.

If you’re not sure if you should go with the more expensive OLED G9 or this more affordable LCD G9, consider the main two differences (outside of price). The OLED G9 doesn’t get as bright, with only 250 nits, while the LCD reaches 1,000 nit peak brightness. Also, the OLED gets “true black” with OLED technology, while the LCD won’t. If brightness is more important to you over colors—or if you’d just rather save some money—the Odyssey G9 gaming monitor is your best bet.

My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: This Stunning Samsung OLED Gaming Monitor

It’s not very often a gaming monitor comes onto the market and utterly dominates it the way the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 gaming monitor did in 2023. It was the first 49-inch OLED gaming monitor, boasting incredible specs and delivering great performance. But it had a big problem: a staggering list price of $2,199.

A year later, the list price of the G95SC has dropped to $1,799.99, but you can pick one up from Amazon right now for much less than that—$1,099. This is $50 off its lowest price ever, according to price-checking tools.

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is an ultrawide gaming monitor that is so powerful, it’s honestly overkill for most gamers—but if you can afford it, better specs never hurt anyone. It has a native resolution of 5,120 by 1,440 pixels, a 240Hz refresh rate, a rated 0.03ms response time, and a OLED panel with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The “true blacks” from the OLED panel and 4K resolution bring a beautiful image on its 49-inch screen and 32:9 aspect ratio. The main downside is that it only offers two USB ports.

A cool feature of the monitor is the Samsung gaming and media hub, an all-in-one streaming platform that lets you stream your games (think Xbox Game Pass) or media (like Netflix) on the monitor. If you’re a serious gamer looking to get one of the best OLED gaming monitors at a great price, it’ll be hard to beat this deal, even at nearly $1,100.
