Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Wednesday, August 28, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for August 28, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is medium difficult; I got it in four. Beware, there are spoilers below for August 28, Wordle #1,166! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

They’re all common letters from our mnemonic today!

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

Graceful, like a ballerina.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There are two vowels.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with L.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with E.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is LITHE.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and TOUCH, which narrowed down to only a few solutions. I tried TITHE first, then LITHE seemed like the next most common word.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “this is worn by royalty” and the answer contained three common letters, one pretty common letter, and one uncommon letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was CROWN.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

The Best Ways to Beat the ‘Forgetting Curve’ While Studying

It seems like common sense that the longer you go without retrieving a memory, the harder it is to retrieve—but it wasn’t always one of those things we simply knew to be true. In the 1880s, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus studied the phenomenon and published his findings, giving the world the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve. The curve is a simple graphic demonstrating how information is lost over time, but it proved that time-related forgetting is real (and has been reaffirmed by further study since). Want to fight the curve and hold on to your memories, especially when you’re studying? Here’s how.

How long do memories of new information last?

Ebbinghaus concluded that how quickly we forget something depends on factors like how difficult or meaningful the material was, but also how tired or stressed we are, so there’s no clear-cut answer to the question of how many days you’ll hold on to a piece of information if you don’t think about it.

We also know that the order in which information is presented matters a lot when it comes to how long we store it in our short-term memory, so there are quite a few factors that go into our memory retrieval and retention abilities. I’m sorry to say there’s no black-and-white answer when it comes to how long you’ll hold onto a piece of information, but there are a few answers Ebbinghaus and today’s educators agree on when it comes to how you can better retain it.

Beat the forgetting curve with spaced repetition

The first strategy you can use to better retain information is called spaced repetition, an evidence-based technique that helps learners absorb numerous pieces of information and store them in their memory.

Basically, you need to study the material multiple times, giving yourself space between each review. The amount of time you go without studying the material depends largely on how well you’re already remembering it, which means the longer you review, the longer the periods between each review should be. Reviewing your class notes for a difficult class should be done more frequently than reviewing the notes for a class where you really get the concepts, for instance. Instead of subjectively deciding if you’re retaining the information and need to review it or not, try using the Leitner system, which helps you schedule your studying based on whether or not you answered a particular flashcard correctly the last time you went through it. If you got it right, you don’t need to pick that one up as often going forward.

If you’re hesitant about using old-school methods like hand-written flashcards, don’t be. Writing by hand can actually help you retain information better, so using the Leitner system that way can have a two-for-one benefit.

Beat the forgetting curve with engaged learning

Teaching resources recommend that educators use methods to make lessons more engaging to help kids beat the forgetting curve, but you can apply that same idea to your own individual studying, no matter what level you’re at. When you’re reading new information, for instance, use techniques that help you stay absorbed in the material.

Try examining new info through the lens of Kolb’s learning cycle, for instance, which relies on the belief that you need to have concrete learning, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation to really learn something. Or use a critical-thinking method, like SQ3R, to track your progress on a topic. With SQ3R, you’ll write down a little of what you can gather from a review of the material, then questions you want to answer when you give it a more thorough read, so you’ll stay engaged as you go, searching for the answers to your questions. The technique also calls for you to review your notes periodically, which fits right in with the spaced repetition and will help you overcome the forgetting curve. Again, try to use an old-fashioned notebook for this so you can reap the dual benefits of hand-writing and reviewing. You can even get a specialty notebook that guides you through the SQ3R process, so you can focus entirely on writing and reviewing instead of remembering what you’re supposed to be jotting down.

Everything the Rumors Say About the PS5 Pro

The PlayStation 5 has been out for nearly four years, and still has a lot of life in it, but Sony may be eyeing a mid-cycle refresh of the console in the form of a more powerful PS5 Pro. In fact, some rumors suggest we could see the new console as soon as this year, and that it will include some pretty hefty upgrades.

Of course, Sony has yet to officially confirm anything, or even openly admit it is working on a successor to the PS5. But based on the timing of the release of the PS4 Pro in November 2016, three years into the life of that console generation, it seems likely Sony is also looking to iterate on its newest console. Until we get official news, of course, at’s all rumor and speculation, but that can be fun, too.

Potential specs for the PS5 Pro: Increased performance and 8K gaming

There isn’t much to go on when it comes to the PS5 Pro’s potential price and specs. However, recent rumors and possible leaks suggest the PS5 Pro will offer 33.5 teraflops of power. Yes, that is actually the name of the measurement, and that’s nearly three times the power as the PS5 today.

Additionally, the scuttlebutt is that the GPU in the PS5 Pro will offer 45% higher rasterization performance, and that it could use AI upscaling in a method similar to Nvidia’s DLSS, which would result in smoother gameplay and optimization across even the most demanding titles. (DLSS absolutely saved Star Citizen’s performance on PC, and it would be great to see similar functionality on the PS5 Pro.) This feature is called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), as reported by Inside Gaming.

Inside Gaming suggests that the PS5 Pro will also offer system memory speeds up to 28% faster than the base PS5 (an increase to 576 GB/s from the current 448 GB/s). The new system is also said to feature a “high CPU frequency mode” that will offer a 10% increase in performance over the existing console. Further rumors hint that the PS5 Pro will be future-proofed to handle 8K gaming after a firmware update, and will be equipped with a custom machine-learning architecture.

Reports from The Verge suggest that the PS5 Pro will also include a standard mode, which targets CPU speeds of 3.5GHz, in addition to this high CPU frequency mode, which targets 3.85GHz. Standard mode will perform similarly to the regular PS5, while the new high-performance mode is where the PS5 Pro will really shine. This new mode will allow for more power to be allocated to the CPU, which means the GPU will be downclocked around 1.5 percent, according to The Verge’s report.

Sources have also told The Verge that Sony has asked developers to target a 60 fps frame rate with ray-tracing effects using the new upscaling technique the PS5 Pro will offer. It should provide similar gains as those seen in games that utilize Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR systems, both of which render the game at a lower resolution and then upscale it to increase performance without taxing the system as much.

Games that fully take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s new specs will allegedly get a special PS5 Pro “Enhanced” label. However, reports indicate that Sony will use this label on more than just games targeting the 60 fps mentioned earlier. They’ll also appear on games that target 30 fps, but take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s other upgrades.

This could mean that we see PS5 Pro Enhanced games that can run anywhere from 1280p and 2160p on the PS5 Pro at 30fps and only between 1080p and 1440p at 30fps on the base PlayStation 5. And, if developers enable ray-tracing, their games may also be able to apply the PS5 Pro Enhanced label despite not improving performance in any way.

A label like this certainly opens room for some confusion, as anyone seeing the PS5 Pro Enhanced label is likely to expect to see some kind of performance gains with the new console. However, this is actually similar to what Sony did with the PS4 Pro back when it started releasing games enhanced for the more powerful version of its console. Thankfully, The Verge says that Sony is not going to let developers use the Enhanced label just for providing a more stable frame rate. The games will need to take advantage of some new features that the PS5 Pro offers in order for the label to apply.

Much like the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro is also expected to have an “ultra-boost” mode or “performance” mode that should improve performance in games even if developers don’t update them to the new PS5 Pro SDK and take advantage of any of the new features.

When will the PS5 Pro be released?

With the PS5 already in the latter half of its lifecycle, at least according to Sony’s financial results call in February, it makes sense for the PS5 Pro to release sooner rather than later. Speculation suggests that we could see a release of the beefier PlayStation 5 as early as fall of 2024. Like the PS4, which was superseded by a Pro model three years in, the base PS5 was released in the fall, so it seems sensible to assume Sony will likewise try to position the PS5 Pro as a must-have holiday gift.

While it doesn’t shed light on the timeline, journalists are reporting that developers know the PS5 Pro is closely approaching. Mashable reports that a developer told Italian journalist Lorenzo Fazio of Multiplayer they put their game development on pause because the PS5 Pro was on its way, while a different developer told Wccftech the same thing. Analyst Colin Moriarty revealed that publishers from third-party studios have already been briefed on the specs for a PS5 Pro, offering even more support for an imminent release.

Of course, all of this is subject to change, as Sony has yet to offer up any official confirmation of or information about the PS5 Pro, though the rumors are definitely widespread enough to suggest it’s not entirely wishful thinking. Of course, there have also been rumors about a follow-up to the Nintendo Switch since before the Switch OLED dropped, so rumors and speculation don’t always play out as one might assume.

The 13 Best Things to Cook in Your New Air Fryer

You’ve finally purchased your first air fryer. Let me start by saying, I’m so happy for you. This small countertop convection oven is about to be your new favorite appliance. It won’t replace your other ones—the oven, toaster, and stovetop are fit for certain purposes—but it delivers on speed and crispiness like no other. It can cook with microwave-like speed (some meals 50% to 75% faster) without compromising on the quality of the finished dish, and it can recrisp some leftovers to a state arguably better than when it was fresh. So what should you cook first? Here are the best things to pop in the air fryer as soon as possible.

Potatoes. All of them.

Potatoes do particularly well in the air fryer. In fact, if you bought an air fryer solely for the purpose of reheating restaurant leftovers or to make freezer fries, no one would blame you. That’s very smart. But don’t stop there, make crunchy roast potatoes in the air fryer, add canned sliced potatoes, mini Hasselbacks, or just any potato that you wish was crunchier

Leftover fried food

We keep fried leftovers with the hope that they’ll taste pretty good the next day. No high expectations—even “just okay” would work—because more often than not, the warmed-up fried food tends to be dry, rubbery, and greasy. This is no longer your fate, new air fryer owner. All leftover fried foods (I have not been disappointed once) reheat to crispy perfection after a quick stint in the high velocity winds of the air fryer. Fries, onion rings, crab rangoon, egg rolls, arancini, chicken nuggets, you name it—it’s crispy again. In fact, look in your fridge right now and air fry any cold, formerly fried thing that you kept.

Gnocchi and meatballs

Your future meals don’t have to consist of potatoes and old fried food (but there’s no shame in that); air fryers can even make you an entire meal in one basket. You can make packaged gnocchi and frozen meatballs in a single air fry sesh because they happen to cook at the same rate. Just throw them into a 385℉ air fryer for about 10 minutes, and toss the tasty morsels in some warm tomato sauce for a lovely meal.

Pork tenderloin

A weeknight roast usually has “long cook time” written all over it, but the air fryer can make short work out of a bulky cut of meat in no time. Pork tenderloin is one of my favorite roasts to make because it’s an affordable cut, and it takes no time to whip up in that countertop convection oven. Simply marinate it a few hours prior to cooking, drop it into a 350℉ air fryer and roast it for about 20 minutes. A juicy and impressive pork roast is ready in the time it takes you to change from “work clothes” to “chill clothes.”

Fried bread

You shouldn’t make toast in the air fryer (unless you like desiccated, dry, dust bricks), but you can make a mean fried bread in there. It’s like making quick Texas toast—crisp and oily in the best way possible. To make delicious fried bread, generously spread fat on both sides of a slice of bread. You can use butter, mayo, bacon fat, schmaltz, whatever you have, and air fry it at 400℉ for a few minutes, flipping it halfway through.

Peppers

I adore roasted red peppers. They’re great in dips, tossed in salads, or blended into soups. Sadly, roasting them in the oven for 40 minutes, or blistering them over the flame of my gas stove was all a complete chore. Luckily, the air fryer cooks up tender roasted peppers in a fraction of the time. Throw an entire pepper or two into your air fryer basket, no need to add oil or anything, and air fry it for five to seven minutes. You’ll have perfectly blistered peppers ready to use.

Egg rolled leftovers

Egg rolls on a plate.

Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann

One of my favorite ways to make leftovers fun again is to roll them up in egg roll wrappers. Almost any type of leftover dish is a delicious egg roll filling and you can get a deep-fried crunch with the air fryer. Just fill and roll the egg rolls and swipe a thin layer of oil onto the outside of the shell. Air fry them at 375℉ for 12 to 15 minutes.

Hot dogs

I can’t say that hot dogs are difficult to make. They’re already cooked so you could boil them or even microwave them, but air fried dogs are truly the best option. My partner and I have air fried both fridge-cold dogs and near-frozen hot dogs, and they both take about the same amount of time to warm up—roughly three minutes. Three. I suggest making diagonal slices all around the sides of your dogs so they brown on the edges.

Most of the freezer aisle

The freezer aisle of your grocery store is packed with snacks, large and small, designed to cook well in your conventional oven. Well now you basically have a tiny oven on steroids. All the delicious stoner foods you like to make late at night are better and cook faster in your air fryer—especially if it has a breading or batter coating. Air fry fish sticks, small pizzas, tater tots, jalepeño poppers, mozzarella sticks (honestly, any frozen TGIFridays item), garlic bread, or tiny White Castle burgers.

Canned mushrooms

My favorite air fryer snack lately is the mushroom chip. They’re full of umami and as crispy as a pork rind. You can make a bowl of this crunchy, salty snack with a simple can of mushrooms. Just drain them and toss with a light coating of oil. Air fry them for a few minutes at 390℉ until crisp and brown.

Seafood

Lobster tail on a plate.

Credit: Claire Lower

Seafood cooks well in the air fryer too, and I don’t just mean breaded shrimp (but of course, breaded shrimp). You can air fry frozen shrimp to tender, seasoned perfection in just a handful of minutes. Air fry a lobster tail in under 10 minutes for a weeknight treat. The vortex heat cooks these sea creatures so quickly they don’t have time to dry out. But that does mean you should set the timer and check on them early, because they’ll be finished before you know it.

Soggy fried chicken

Technically, yes, soggy fried chicken can fit in the “leftover food” category, but it can also be a special case. If you’ve ever gotten takeaway or delivery from Popeye’s then you know some soggy fried chicken isn’t leftover or cold. It’s humid. Luckily the air fryer allows you to revive this nearly defeated chicken. Unwrap any disappointingly soft fried chicken (this includes sandwiches, just take the chicken out of the bun first) and drop it into the air fryer for five to ten minutes at 400℉. Your fried chicken will be better than ever.

Meatloaf

Another low-cost, satisfying, comfort food main course is a meatloaf, and (surprise!) the air fryer can have this on your plate in record time. Just make sure to shape your meatloaf into a size that fits within the confines of your basket or oven-style air fryer. Set the air fryer to 375℉ and roast for about 10 minutes (flipping halfway), or until the internal temperature matches the doneness for the meat mixture you used.

Used Pelotons Are Still a Good Deal (Even With the New $95 Fee)

The used market for Peloton exercise bikes has always been a strength of the brand. The bikes hold up well to years of use, there’s no model-number churn to worry about, and you can reactivate a Bike you bought off Craigslist the same as if it were brand new. That’s changing, though: Peloton will now charge buyers $95 to set up a used Bike.

The news comes from Peloton’s Q4 shareholder letter, as reported by the Verge. In the letter, the company says that used equipment brings in a “steady stream” of new subscribers, and they tend to stay with Peloton longer than rental subscribers. By the way, Peloton quietly ended their rental program for the original Bike (as of August 1, 2024), telling shareholders that they didn’t have enough used Bikes to sell them as refurbished units and rent them out. They do still rent the more expensive Bike+.

How it used to work to buy a used Bike

When you buy Peloton equipment like a Bike or Bike+ (more on the difference between those two here), you need to acquire the equipment and you need to pay a $44/month fee for the All-Access Membership, which gets you the signature video classes and the other connected features of the Bike (like the power zone bar, and having your rides show up in your account on the phone app).

You can buy your Bike (or other Peloton equipment) new, or refurbished, or you can rent it. You can also buy used equipment the same way you would a used car or a vintage dress, by simply handing money to a person who has one and wants to sell it.

After you take your used Bike home, you need to activate it so that you can begin paying your $44/month subscription. Here are the current instructions for doing that, which don’t yet mention the new fee. What Peloton is proposing is that you’ll have to pay $95 to activate your new (used) equipment—or, as one redditor put it, “You’re asking people to pay a fee in order for them to pay you a subscription fee.”

At least you get something for your $95

Peloton has not yet released the full details on how the $95 fee will work, but they did give a few bits of important information.

The letter describes the $95 as a “one-time” fee, suggesting that if you let your subscription lapse and then reactivate it, that doesn’t seem like it would trigger a new charge. You buy your used Bike, you pay your $95, and then you’re on the same footing as any other customer. Based on the shareholder letter, the fee seems to only apply to these “secondary market” sales, and likely will not apply to refurbished Bikes bought directly from Peloton.

And hey—you get something for it! Peloton is framing this as a better “onboarding experience” for members who have purchased a used Bike, so when you pay your $95 you’ll be able to get a “virtual custom fitting” to make sure your Bike is set up properly. This is a service that people have paid for, from third parties, so it may be enough of an enticement to soften the blow. That said, I’m sure plenty of new members would rather adjust the bike with trial and error and the provided instructions if it meant saving nearly a hundred bucks.

Peloton also says it will offer new members discounts on accessories, including shoes and spare parts.

A quick rundown of all the different ways to get a Peloton Bike (or Bike+) and what they cost

With the new fee, you’ll need to add $95 to the purchase price of any used Peloton equipment to understand how much you’re really paying to bring it home. Here’s the comparison:

  • Used, from a third party: I’m seeing prices in the range of $400-$800 for the original Bike, plus you’ll need to consider the $95 fee, for a total of about $500-$900. The Bike+ goes for more, around $800-$1,200. These prices are all subject to change and will be different depending on your location, the condition of the bike, and other factors, so take them with a large grain of salt.

  • Refurbished, from Peloton: $1,145 for the regular Bike, $1,995 for the Bike+ (no activation fee expected). Refurbished equipment comes with a warranty.

  • Renting the Bike+: $119/month plus a $150 delivery fee. Peloton no longer offers rentals of the base model Bike. You can buy out your rental at any point, but you’re not really saving money; the buyout cost plus past rental costs usually works out to be similar to the cost of buying new. (We have a more detailed breakdown here.)

  • Buying a new Bike: $1,495 for the Bike, $2,495 for the Bike+, unless you catch a sale—in the past, big sale days like Black Friday and Prime Day have brought steep discounts.

All told, used Bikes (and Bike+s) are still by far the best deal. A few years ago, used Bikes were only a bit cheaper than their new or refurbished counterparts; these days, used prices seem to be at all-time lows. Peloton wants their $95 cut of those sales, but the prices are already low enough that adding $95 shouldn’t deter you from buying used.

Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Tuesday, August 27, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for August 27, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is medium difficult; I got it in four. Beware, there are spoilers below for August 27, Wordle #1,165!

There are three common letters from our mnemonic today. One is pretty common, and one is uncommon.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

This is worn by royalty.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There is one vowel.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with C.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with N.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is CROWN.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and TOUCH followed by BLOND, which left CROWN as the best solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “as a verb, to support a plant; as a noun, an interest or share” and the answer contained four common letters and one somewhat common letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was STAKE.

Let’s go!
