Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Sunday, August 25, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for August 25, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is medium difficult; I got it in four. Beware, there are spoilers below for August 25, Wordle #1,1613! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

There are four common letters from our mnemonic today. The fifth is somewhat common.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

As a verb, can be done on ice or pavement.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There are two vowels.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with S.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with E.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is SKATE.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and CHANT, assuming I wasn’t looking for any additional vowels after A and E. My next guess was STALE, which left SKATE as the best solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “a cut of meat or fish” and the answer contained four common letters and one fairly common letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was FILET.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

What’s New on Max in September 2024

The biggest event on Max in September is the debut of HBO original series and DC Studios production The Penguin, a spinoff of the 2022 film The Batman. Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the titular character in the eight-episode limited run, which is set one week after the events in the movie. The premiere will air on HBO (and will be available on Max) on Thursday, September 19 at 9 pm ET, with new episodes dropping on Sundays beginning September 29.

September will also bring two films from A24 and one from Studio Ghibli. From the latter is The Boy and the Heron (Sept. 6), an animated fantasy about a boy who befriends a talking grey heron after his mother’s death, with characters voiced by Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh.

A24’s Civil War (Sept. 13) is a dystopian thriller in which military-embedded journalists try to reach Washington, D.C. before rebels take down the government. The film—A24’s most expensive to date—was written and directed by Alex Garland and stars Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Sonoya Mizuno. The other A24 debut is I Saw The TV Glow (Sept. 20), a horror-drama that premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and is the second installment of writer/director Jane Schoenbrun’s Screen Trilogy.

Here’s everything else coming to Max in September, including season four of HBO original drama My Brilliant Friend (Sept. 9).

Why Your Toenails Turn Black (and How to Fix It)

Black toenails are common among marathoners and other serious runners, but you don’t have to put up with them. Chances are something about the fit of your shoes is contributing to the problem—so here’s a guide to how to avoid getting black toenails in the first place, and how to deal with them when they happen.

And, yes, in case you were wondering—a black toenail can sometimes fall off. If this has never happened to you, you’re probably absolutely disgusted right now. If it has—and I’ve been there—you know that it’s actually not that big a deal, and they grow back. But more on that in a sec.

Why do toenails turn black?

Typically, a black (or blue, or purple) toenail is just a bruise that you can see because your toenail is clear. That’s what we’ll be talking about today. These bruises can happen suddenly—like if you drop a weight plate on your toe—or they can occur as you bump your toes into the front of your shoes thousands of times each mile.

There are other reasons that a toenail can change colors, so if you have any doubts about whether you’re looking at bruising or something more serious, ask a medical professional to take a look. Those other reasons can include normal pigmentation changes that can happen over time, different types of toenail fungus, and even some types of skin cancer. A color change that extends beyond the nail, for example, is cause for concern; so is a black spot that stays in place for months rather than growing out or fading away. But usually, if you’ve upped the mileage and your toes start turning black, the cause is the obvious one.

Size up your shoes

While bruised toenails are common among people who run a lot, they are by no means inevitable. If your toenails are bruising all the time, your shoes are probably too tight in the toebox.

I got my first black toenails when I started training for a marathon, after years of never running more than three to five miles at a stretch. I had bought size 8 running shoes to fit my size 8 feet, and for all those years they had been fine—until I cranked up the mileage. So when it was time to buy a new pair, I upgraded to an 8.5. My toenails stopped turning black, and as a bonus I stopped getting blisters, too.

Your feet swell a little bit as you run, so it’s smart to buy shoes that account for that. You may think this would make your feet slide around more in your shoes, but running shoes are made so that you can lace them snug around your instep and still have plenty of room around your toes. If you need a little extra help to keep your foot toward the back of the shoe, use that extra pair of lace holes and tie a heel lock to fine-tune the fit.

Change your socks

If you run in thick socks, switching to thinner ones can buy you some space. As a bonus, thin socks made specifically for running will often make your feet less blister-prone. Try Feetures or Swiftwick.

Trim your nails

Another way to stop your nails from pushing into the front of your shoes is to keep them trimmed. Cut them as short as is comfortable (too short can be irritating as well), and trim or file them frequently to keep them that way.

Paint them, maybe

The summer I had all those black toenails, I started shopping for interesting colors of nail polish. Bruises will show through anything sheer, but it was fun to experiment with dark colors, including blues and purples.

I couldn’t find an expert consensus on whether or not it’s bad to keep bruised toenails painted. It’s not true that nails need to “breathe” (the tissues in our toes get their oxygen from our blood, not from the air directly) but in some cases, nail polish and the chemicals we use to remove it can contribute to the nail drying out, or they can simply make it harder to see whether the nail underneath is healthy.

I will say that plenty of runners paint their nails with no ill effects, but if you have any doubts, it’s also fine to save the nail polish for special occasions. The dark color of the bruise will grow out eventually.

Seek care if they hurt

It’s possible for the pooled blood under a bruised toenail to cause so much pressure that it hurts. A doctor or other provider can puncture the nail to drain fluid and relieve the pressure.

There is no shortage of instructions on the internet for how to do this yourself, using a hot needle or pape rclip, or even a drill bit. While people have done this, I do not recommend self-surgery. In any case, draining a toenail is for when the pressure from fluid under the nail is causing pain. It won’t do anything for toenails that are painless or mildly achy after turning black from mild bruising.

Look forward to when they fall off

This is the fun/gross part: injured toenails sometimes fall off. Sometimes they’ll turn black and then fall off, but you can also have nails fall off without a visible bruise, or vice versa.

It’s less gross than it sounds, because a new nail starts growing underneath the old one. You may not even notice what’s happening until the new nail is already mostly in place. You’ll just go to trim your nails one day and notice that one of them lifts up easily—that’s the older, top nail getting ready to make its exit.

This transition period can be awkward, and you have two choices. First, if the nail is still mostly attached, use a band-aid or athletic tape to cover the toenail, making sure that any loose edges won’t catch on your sock or the inside of your shoe. Since the fresh new nail underneath is thin and may not yet cover the entire nail bed, keeping the old nail on will help to protect your toe.

The other option is to remove the old nail, which you can do as soon as it feels like that’s a better option than taping it. Consider using a nail trimmer to do the job carefully (rather than yoinking and hoping for the best), and then use a file to smooth down any rough edges.

These Air Fryer Mushroom Chips Are Salty, Crispy Perfection

Mushroom lovers, vegans, and crunchy-savory snackers: Boy, do I have news for you. I had my doubts, but I’ve stumbled upon the cheapest, crispiest snack of a lifetime: mushroom chips. Not freeze-dried mushrooms (although I’m also obsessed with those)—crispy, airy, salt-tinged, eat-them-by-the-handful mushroom chips. And all you have to do is dump a can of sliced mushrooms into your air fryer.

I was actually trying to make air-fried carrot chips when I made my first batch of mushroom chips. Despite my knowledge of the carrot’s high sugar content and relatively low starch content, I thought I’d give it a try because you never know. But the carrot performed as expected—the sugars caramelized and the lack of starch led to a bitter, chewy, vegetable imitation of beef jerky.

I was downtrodden but decided to follow through with my second idea: mushroom chips. As you may know, I always keep canned mushrooms in my cabinets (and you should too), but after the carrot debacle, I was more sure than ever that the sliced mushrooms would be shriveled, chewy, unattractive bundles by the end of their stint in the air fryer. I opened the basket halfway through the cooking time to check on them. Unimpressed by their diminished stature, I went to push the basket back into my Ninja DoubleStack, and I couldn’t believe my ears. It was the sound of crisp edges brushing against metal. I took one small mushroom chip out to cool on the counter and ate it. The damn thing was crunchy as all hell.

Why mushrooms make great chips

Mushroom chips exhibit such a distinctive bubbly, shattering crunch, the only thing I can compare them to are pork rinds. The cell walls of mushrooms have a special component: chitin. Chitin is one of the building blocks of insect exoskeletons, and you can’t get crunchier than that. Once the water is removed by the hot forceful winds of the air fryer, you’re left with all the fabulous crunchy parts of the mushroom and its concentrated savory flavor.

You can buy sliced mushrooms that don’t have salt in their canning liquid, but unless you have dietary restrictions, I recommend getting the sort that do. This means the mushroom slices are already imbued with a subtle saltiness, and removes the need to salt them on your end. I found that using a light layer of cooking oil (I used canola) ensures that bubbly, crisp, pork rind-esque texture. I also did a batch of mushrooms plain, with no oil, and those were crispy and lovely too. Personally, though, I prefer the former. My only note when you make this recipe is to buy a large can of mushrooms. They shrink to less than half their starting size and they’re so good that you’ll be glad you got a bigger can.

Easy Air-Fried Mushroom Chips Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (6- to 8-ounce) plain sliced mushrooms

  • 1 teaspoon neutral oil

1. Drain the can of mushrooms completely. (No need to dry them on a paper towel.)

2. Dump the mushroom slices into a bowl. Drizzle or spray the mushrooms with the oil. Use your hands and toss the pieces to coat them in oil. (You don’t need much oil at all; they shouldn’t be oily.)

3. Spread out the mushroom pieces in the air fryer basket. They can be touching each other edge to edge but try to avoid overlapping. At the end they’ll move around anyway, but it helps them cook at the same rate. Set the machine to the “air fry” setting at 390°F and let ‘er rip for 12 to 15 minutes. There’s no need to flip them, but check on them to see if they’re done on the early side.

The chips will be much smaller and browned. Test one by putting it on a plate to cool for a few seconds (they hardly need a moment to cool). Eat it. If the center is still bendy, then air fry for another minute or two.

The Real Cost of a Peloton

Like anyone who was about to drop over $1,000 on something, I did my research before I bought a Peloton three years ago, endeavoring to find out precisely what the bike and a membership to stream classes for it would cost me. The home-based fitness giant is straightforward about that on its website: A basic bike is $1,445 and the Bike+ is $2,495. The All-Access membership is $44 per month and my shipping and setup were free. (There are also other ways to save on your streaming classes, like if you subscribe to Fitbit Premium, so make sure you explore all your options.) Other costs associated with Peloton ownership are not quite as straight-forward, however, which I only learned after I got mine.

Additional Peloton needs and costs

Even though I’m a spin teacher, I’ve always hated cycling shoes. I do not like to clip in and out of the pedals, and I don’t like the way it feels to be anchored to them in just one spot. I much prefer having a strap to cover my regular sneakers and all the bikes at every gym I’ve ever taught or taken a class at have had pedals that feature clips on one side and straps on the other. This is not true for the Peloton, which has small pedals that can only work with clip-in shoes. I discovered this the first night I had the bike and was disappointed, but after dropping all that money earlier in the day, I didn’t want to buy the shoes the company sells separately for $125. Luckily, any Delta-compatible cleats will work with the bike, so I ordered a pair of $40 cleats from Amazon; in general, you’ll likely spend between $39 and $55 on shoes if you don’t already own a pair of Delta cleats.

That price isn’t too prohibitive, but if you also hate cycling shoes, this could be a bigger issue you need to keep in mind—especially if your bike will have multiple users, all of whom need shoes in their own size. Since I’m the only rider on mine, I keep my cleats locked to the pedals at all times and just slip in and out of them when I spin, but that’s a “cost” in itself, since it’s annoying and cumbersome.

I also noticed my bike wobbling a bit on my uneven floor, which was more noisy than destabilizing. I got a cheap cushion from the dollar store to stuff under the front of my bike which solved the problem temporarily, but over the long term, you should place a mat under the bike to protect your floor. Peloton sells one for $75; Amazon sells similar ones for around $30.

Finally, Peloton offers a selection of classes that incorporate hand weights and the bikes include little holsters for them—but they cost extra, too. In this case, it’s probably your best bet to buy the branded ones to make sure they fit right in the holsters. The last thing you (and your floor and surrounding valuables) need is your weights flying out while you’re riding hard. The light weights are $25.

Other Peloton accessories to buy

When you make a big purchase, you want to get the most out of it and really juice it up. With a Peloton, you’ll find a variety of third-party accessories available that make riding your bike more fun or efficient. They’re not necessary, but they’re tempting:

I also recently tried out a VSEAT ($119), a bike seat with no front section between the legs and a flatter design than a traditional one. It promises to reduce groin pressure and improve posture, which it did do for me, and it was easy to install, too.

Overall Peloton costs

Spending some extra money on my bike wasn’t that big of a deal in the long run, although I could (and should) have spent more (and still might). Depending on how often you plan to use yours and what you want to do with it, you may spend a lot more than you initially expected. Spend some time tracking how often you use it and what issues you’re running into before buying the whole slew of accessories and goodies for it upfront.

Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Friday, August 23, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for August 23, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is medium difficult; I got it in four. Beware, there are spoilers below for August 23, Wordle #1,161!

The fifth is also pretty common.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

Blood sucker.

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There is one repeated letter today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There is one vowels, used twice.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with L.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with H.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is LEECH.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I started with RAISE and TOUCH then guessed BENCH as one of the most common words with the letters I had confirmed. After this, LEECH was the best solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was easier. The hint was “a type of force” and the answer contained four common letters and one fairly common letter.

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle was BRUTE.
