Overhaul Your To-do List With the ‘ABCDE’ Method

A major component of productivity is prioritizing your daily responsibilities, which is why to-do lists are so important. Usually, I suggest using the Eisenhower Matrix, which helps you visually sort tasks according to how urgent and important they are, but there is another way: The ABCDE method, which comes from Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy. Obviously, eating the frog—or doing your biggest, worst task first—is one way to tackle the day’s duties, but structuring out how you’ll do the rest is pretty important, too. Here’s how it works.

What is the ABCDE method?

The ABCDE method is a simple way to categorize whatever you need to do. Using it can be a solid first step to making your to-do list, especially if you’re following a model like the 1-3-5 list, which requires you to do one major task, three medium-sized ones, and five small ones every day. Figuring out the big, medium, and small tasks is actually a task in itself (but it doesn’t count as one of the five, sorry).

When you are planning out your day, you’re going to give each task in front of you a grade. First, list out everything you need to do. This can be a list of your tasks for the day, week, or month—you’ll weed it all down eventually. Then, give them each a grade based on this outline:

  • A is for the most important tasks, like anything that will have a consequence if it doesn’t get done. These are those “frog” tasks that will require resources and time, but they can also be something that doesn’t take a lot of time but does have a hefty associated punishment for failure, like paying a bill on time.

  • B tasks are ones that also need to get done, but won’t have such serious ramifications if they’re not done immediately. You know you need to do them at some point (lest they escalate to the urgency of an A task) but you have a little wiggle room.

  • C tasks don’t have any consequences for not getting done, but are things it would be good to get taken care of. For me, a C task might be responding to a PR pitch to say I’m not interested in interviewing their client. I didn’t need to do it, but it’s a nice thing to do that keeps a professional relationship friendly. (Conversely, a B task would be responding to someone’s publicity agent right away when they’re trying to nail down a time for an interview. An A task would be doing the interview.)

  • D tasks are anything that you can delegate to someone else. The person you give it to shouldn’t have any A or B tasks it will take away from; it should become a priority for them, even if it’s not major for you or simply something you trust they’ll get done right.

  • E tasks are ones you eliminate altogether. If they serve absolutely no purpose, have no consequences attached to them, or may even pull you off course or be a detriment, just don’t do them. This is a pretty relative grade, though: Say you wanted to go to the grocery store tonight but just don’t have time. You have enough food at home or could order takeout. It’s fine to eliminate it this time, but when you deplete all your food, the grocery store trip will roar back onto the list in a higher position. Other E tasks may never reappear; they’re just inconsequential. Ignore them to reduce pressure on yourself.

Using the ABCDE grades to structure your day

Once every task has been assigned a grade, start planning out your day (and week and month). Here’s where that 1-3-5 to-do list comes in: The one big task should be an A task, something that is urgent and timely, and/or requires major resources and focus. The three medium-sized tasks might include a smaller A-level one, but will most likely be Bs. For the five smaller tasks, pick up any leftover B grades and, if you want, Cs. As for the D-level things, outsourcing and coordinating on them might still require enough work to qualify carrying out the delegation as one of your five smaller tasks, but it depends how much effort that really takes and what the rest of your day is looking like. Don’t shoot the messenger, but you might have to fall back on a C task to get the delegation taken care of.

The E grades can just be crossed off. Go ahead and delete them or strike them out. It’ll feel good (and productive) to get that finality on them.

Once you’ve organized which tasks are necessary for the day, look ahead at the week and make sure you keep any B-level responsibilities in mind and roll them over to a day that works for you if you don’t have time that particular day. Putting them off will turn them into As pretty quickly.

As always, rely on timeboxing to schedule out the day from there. Allocate time for each task in your calendar, giving yourself the most time for major A-level duties and less and less time for B and C. Don’t multitask; instead, do each thing in order, starting by eating the frog and moving through the other things one at a time until they’re done. (The exception here is that if you’re delegating tasks, try to get it done early so the other person has time to complete what should be an A- or B-level job for them, too.)

Grading your responsibilities is an easy way to get perspective on them and enhance your sense of urgency around them, which compels you to be more productive. Getting it all into an ordered list gives you structure and direction, wastes less time through the day, and will give you a sense of accomplishment when you’re done, which itself is a productivity win.

Games Are Coming to Flipper Zero

Messing around with a Flipper Zero is about to get even more fun. The just-released Flipper Video Game Module is a Raspberry Pi-powered add-on that turns the Flipper Zero from a hacking/testing tool into a miniature game system.

The Video Game Module adds motion sensing through a gyroscope and accelerometer, a controller port, a USB port, and a video-out jack, so you can use your TV as a Flipper Zero display. The module is compatible with many open-source Raspberry Pi Pico projects, so it can be used as a standalone device without connecting to Flipper Zero too. In keeping with Flipper’s “hack-everything” ethos, everything is open-source, so you can mess around with it in any way you want.

Flipper has prepared some demo apps for the new device, including a digital Oscilloscope, a tilt-controlled version of arcade classic Arkanoid to show off the motion sensing, and an app that lets you use the module as an air mouse. The really interesting apps, though, are sure to be the ones developed by Flipper’s creative community, so be on the lookout in the coming months.

What’s inside the Flipper Zero Video Game Module?

If you want to get intimate with the technical specifications of Flipper, here’s what’s under the hood.

  • Microcontroller: Raspberry Pi RP2040. Dual-core ARM Cortex-M0+ processor, clock running up to 133 MHz.

  • SRAM: 264 kB on-chip.

  • Gyroscope & Accelerometer sensor: TDK ICM-42688-P is a 6-axis MEMS motion-tracking sensor (IMU).

  • USB Type-C port connected to the microcontroller. Acts as a USB device or host (with the limitation that USB power delivery is not supported).

  • Video Out port: DVI-D signal in 640х480 px, 60 Hz. According to Flipper, the video out port “supports a well-known video standard that we can’t name due to copyright limitations. The first letter is H, and the last one is I.” (I wonder if they mean HDMI?)

  • GPIO breakout: 11 GPIO pins connected to the RP2040 microcontroller, two ground pins, and one 3.3 V power pin.

  • Boot button: activates bootloader mode (for developers).

  • Reset button: reboots the module hardware.

Privacy Browser DuckDuckGo Can Finally Sync Your Passwords

DuckDuckGo, often heralded as one of the most secure, privacy-focused browsers/search engines on the market, has finally added the option to sync and back up your passwords, bookmarks, and favorites. This will allow users to transfer their saved data between devices without tediously setting everything up again or sacrificing the privacy-first approach that DuckDuckGo favors.

How does DuckDuckGo’s new Sync & Backup feature work?

The company says that, when activated in settings, the new feature should allow for users to sync their data across “most Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone devices.” This includes the data that you’ve imported from other browsers like Chrome or Firefox. You can also sync email protection settings between devices. All data will be protected by end-to-end encryption. Best of all: The feature is available now.

How to set up Sync & Backup on DuckDuckGo

To set up the new Sync & Backup function, open your browser and select Settings > Sync & Backup > Sync With Another Device and then follow the instructions. DuckDuckGo says you must have its browser installed on at least two devices to use the new function. Syncing will also require you to scan a QR code, or manually enter a unique alphanumeric code, to complete the process.

If you’re only working with one device, you can also select Single-Device Setup to save your data in case you need to sync it to another device later on. And if you lose your device, you can also save a Recovery PDF to a secure device, allowing you to gather your data again even if you have to change devices, bringing the DuckDuckGo browser closer to the functionality offered by browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. But it comes with a warning: if you lose that Recovery Code and you do not have another device with access to your DuckDuckGo data, then you won’t be able to access it, as, again, DuckDuckGo keeps all your data encrypted with end-to-end encryption.

Today’s Wordle Hints (and Answer) for Tuesday, February 13, 2024

If you’re looking for the Wordle answer for February 13, 2024 read on. We’ll share some clues, tips, and strategies, and finally the solution. Today’s puzzle is medium difficulty; I got it in four. Beware, there are spoilers below for February 13, Wordle #969! Keep scrolling if you want some hints (and then the answer) to today’s Wordle game.

How to play Wordle

Wordle lives here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn’t in the day’s secret word at all. For more, check out our guide to playing Wordle here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (We also have more information at the bottom of this post, after the hints and answers.)

Ready for the hints? Let’s go!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We’ll define common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and pretend he’s a friend of yours.)

They’re almost all common letters today! Three of them are in our mnemonic, and two letters that aren’t but are also fairly common. No unusual letters today.

Can you give me a hint for today’s Wordle?

Get outta here!

Does today’s Wordle have any double or repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters today.

How many vowels are in today’s Wordle?

There is one vowel today.

What letter does today’s Wordle start with?

Today’s word starts with S.

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

Today’s word ends with M.

What is the solution to today’s Wordle?

Ready? Today’s word is SCRAM.

How I solved today’s Wordle

After ARISE and TOUCH, I took a guess at SC being an opening combination, so tried SCARY. That confirmed A as the only vowel and the fourth letter, which made SCRAM or SCRAP the likely solutions.

A primer on Wordle basics

The idea of Wordle is to guess the day’s secret word. When you first open the Wordle game, you’ll see an empty grid of letters. It’s up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that are revealed to get clues about the word:

  • Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it’s in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A and T will all be yellow.)

  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

With all that in mind, guess another word, and then another, trying to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it’s game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that’s still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isn’t a single “best” starting word, but the New York Times’s Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE

  • TRACE

  • SLANT

  • CRATE

  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you’ll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

  • SALET

  • REAST

  • TRACE

  • CRATE

  • SLATE

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that it’s better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have a few guides to Wordle strategy, which you might like to read over if you’re a serious student of the game. This one covers how to use consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we detail a three-pronged approach for fishing for hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest thing that separates Wordle winners from Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don’t waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

One more note on strategy: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are slightly tricky words that wouldn’t have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there may be a theme.

Wordle alternatives

If you can’t get enough of five-letter guessing games and their kin, the best Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:

Antiwordle, in which you are trying not to guess the day’s solution. You’re required to reuse any letters that you (oops) guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at the game.

Windows 11 Is Getting a Built-In AI Upscaler

Right now, if you want to take advantage of AI upscaling on Windows, you need to lay out some cash for it. Companies like Nvidia offer AI upscaling as part of their graphics cards, and without one, you’re stuck with the resolutions your PC can handle natively. However, it looks like Microsoft is is changing that. Soon, you should be able to upscale your games natively in Windows 11, without needing a proprietary GPU.

Twitter user PhantomOcean3 showed off the new AI upscaler feature in a tweet. If you’re running Windows 11 version 24H2, currently in testing in the Insider Preview, you’ll find the option under Settings > System > Displays > Graphics. Windows calls the feature “Automatic super resolution,” and says it uses AI to “make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.” While the feature doesn’t seem active yet, it indicates built-in AI upscaling is on its way.

As The Verge’s Tom Warren points out, this feature is reminiscent of AI upscalers from companies like AMD (FidelityFX), Intel (XeSS), and, in particular, Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). If Windows’ built-in AI upscaling feature works close to how Nvidia, AMD, and Intel’s upscalers do, that could remove the need to have hardware from one of these companies in your rig in order to take advantage.

What’s so great about AI upscalers?

The main benefit of native AI upscaling is the ability to render games in a higher resolution without the need for more advanced hardware. For example, if you’re running Windows 11 24H2 on your PC, you could use this feature to upscale a 1440p game to 4K, rather than natively running the game in the 4K resolution. The latter would typically be more demanding on your GPU, and if your hardware isn’t quite powerful enough, you could run into slowdowns.

Upscaling from 1440p, however, can allow you to see enhanced details without the strain on your system. And if Microsoft really wants to compete with upscalers like DLSS, they’ll implement other perks, too. DLSS not only upscales from 1440p to 4K, it also adds details that aren’t there when playing games at 4K with DLSS disabled, and increases frame rates using AI to “guess” what the additional frames should look like. Hopefully, Windows 11’s AI upscaler will offer similar benefits, but at the very least, it’s cool to see Microsoft lowering the bar for entry for this kind of technology.

How to Hide Old Photos of an Ex on Your Android

If you’ve broken up with your partner, you may find yourself wishing that your phone wouldn’t keep reminding you they exist. Photo galleries in most modern phones automatically create all kinds of interesting collages and slideshows, which is great when the memories in question are happy, but can be triggering after a painful breakup. I’ve written before about getting rid of your ex’s photos from your iPhone, and this guide will help people who use Android phones do the same.

It should be noted that various Android phone manufacturers use their own versions of the photo gallery app. The steps to hide or remove your ex’s photos from those apps may vary, so I’m focusing on an app included on most Android phones sold in the U.S.—Google Photos. It’s the preferred photo backup service for most people who use Android. Unfortunately it doesn’t allow you to automatically delete all photos of any one person, but it has some neat workarounds that let you hide your ex’s photos quickly.

Hide a specific person from Google Photos

To hide all photos of someone from your camera reel, open Google Photos and tap the profile icon in the top right corner. Go to Photos settings > Preferences > Memories > Hide people and pets. This will reveal a grid of all the different people and pets identified in your photos. Select all the people (or pets) you want to hide, and you will no longer see their images in memories or other highlights created by Google Photos.

Hide photos taken on a specific date from Google Photos

Google Photos also creates memories based on specific dates in a calendar year. This can lead to suggestions you watch slideshows of your anniversary with an ex-partner, birthday parties, or other moments that were significant in your life. You can stop Google Photos from creating these memories too. Go to Profile icon > Photos settings > Preferences > Memories > Hide dates. Add the dates you want to exclude and Google Photos will leave out any photos from those days when it creates memories.

Archive all photos of a specific person

If you’re sure you don’t want to view any pictures of your ex, but don’t want to delete those photos outright, use Google Photos’ Archive feature. This will move those photos to a separate folder and prevent them from being added into any new memories the service creates. To do this, open Google Photos and press and hold any image of your ex. Keep scrolling and selecting all the photos you don’t want to see, until you’ve found them all. When you’re done, swipe right on the bottom toolbar and select Archive.

Delete your ex’s photos altogether

This is the nuclear option, but in Google Photos, it requires a lot more manual work than in Photos on iPhone. You’ll need to select all pictures of your ex manually and choose the Delete option from the bottom toolbar to get rid of these photos for good. They’ll still be in the Bin folder, which you can access by going to the Library tab in Google Photos and selecting Bin. Removed photos are permanently deleted after 60 days.

Valentine’s Day Is the Perfect Excuse to Try One of These ‘Romantic’ Sex Toys

Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to reflect on your relationship and refresh your sex life. There’s no better holiday to use as an excuse to spice things up with new toys, which is lucky for you because there are plenty of them on sale right now. Pick these up now under the guise of Valentine’s shopping and spend the whole year having fun.

Best sex toys for couples

Some of the more fun toys on the market are designed for mutual pleasure, which is what Valentine’s Day is all about. Try these:

  • The Lelo Tiani 3 remote-controlled couples’ massager (on sale for $135.20) vibrates inside and outside of a vagina, transmitting the vibes to both partners. Plus it’s remote-controlled, so you can even take it on the go if you’re into public foreplay.

  • The We-Vibe Sync O vibrator ($169 on Lovehoney) is similar, but has 10 speeds, an O-shaped internal arm to hold it in place, and the ability to connect not only to a remote, but your phone, for maximum convenience.

  • To play around with new positions, try the Whipsmart Mini Try-Angle Position Cushion ($99.99 at Adam and Eve). The wedge-shaped pillow is small enough for travel, gives you access to angles that are otherwise hard to achieve, and it comes with cuffs that can attach to the pillow itself for a little extra bondage play.

  • If you really want to try bondage, picking up a starter kit for Valentine’s Day is a perfect entry point. The eight-piece Lovehoney All Tied Up kit ($59.49) comes with everything you need: a blindfold, wrist and ankle cuffs, under-mattress straps, a non-intimidating beginner’s flogger, nipple suckers, and more.

  • This mattress attachment on Amazon ($28.99) has 12 links to attach foot and ankle cuffs, meaning there are all kinds of positions you can stick each other in. If you’re already using a standard mattress attachment to go forced spread-eagle, this is about to open up a world of opportunities.

  • Try this wearable device that has clitoral suction, internal vibration, and anal stimulation—but is controlled the partner’s phone ($34.99 on Amazon). It’ll make your Valentine’s dinner… special.

Best toys for those with a vagina

Whether you’re with a partner or on your own, these will put you in that blissful mood:

  • It’s not Valentine’s Day without roses, but this year, you should get some that never die (unless you forget to charge them). The ever-popular Ravishing Rose Pleaser ($35.97 on Adam and Eve) has sold over 100,000 units—and for very good reason. The suction-based vibe is small but powerful. This dual-sided rose vibe from Amazon ($26,99) features both a flicking “tongue” and a thrusting bullet, making it a flower of many important functions, and the Rosegasm Lingo Dual Ended Cliteral Vibrator ($79.99 on Adam and Eve) is a more standard wand vibe with a beautiful floral design, so you could leave it on your nightstand, and only you will know what it really does.

  • Lovehoney’s Heartbeat Clitoral Suction Stimulator ($59.99) is similar to the suction roses, but its heart shape gives it a more ergonomic design, making it easier to hold in place. Plus, it just looks Valentine’s-y.

  • Speaking of hearts, put some over your nipples and call it Valentine’s lingerie. The Coco Unlined bodysuit ($44.95 on Adore Me) is strappy, sexy, and heart-adorned, so it’s perfect for the holiday.

  • Lelo’s Soraya Beads ($183.20) are vibrating anal beads that are small enough for beginners and powerful enough for pros. Plus, unlike the beads you might find at your local adult store, they look classy, which elevates the whole experience to a more romantic level.

Best toys for those with a penis

Toys are for everyone. Try these as well:

  • Lelo’s remote-controlled Hugo prostate massager ($141.75) features vibrating motors in the base and the tip, is easily controlled with a sleek remote, and is medium-sized so it’s neither too big nor too small. He can wear it on his own or with a partner and its curve shape is sure to keep it in place.

  • The Lover’s Cage ($24.99 on Adam and Eve) supports the penis and balls to enhance erections, but also features a delicate, heart-shaped tickler and a removable bullet vibe for extra attention on the lady.

  • The Fleshlight Quickshot compact masturbator ($39.99 on Lovehoney) can be used alone or by a partner, who will enjoy that it’s transparent, so they can see everything while they move it up, down, and all around on the shaft.

  • A three-pack of different sized cock rings ($9.98 on Amazon) can help get you super hard and make you look like you’re really packing some heat.
