PS5’s New Update Makes It Easier to ‘Party’ With Your Friends

Your PS5 has a new update out today—specifically, a firmware update. Version 24.01-08.60.00 should be live and available for all PS5 consoles right now, and while it isn’t a monumental update, it does add some interesting features to your console you should know about.

What’s new in the latest PlayStation 5 firmware update

The headline upgrade this time around is to Parties. Once you update your firmware, you’ll be able to see a full list of parties you’ve joined in previous sessions. If you want to, you can restart a party by choosing it from the Recent list. That should make it much more convenient to jump back into a specific play session with friends.

There are also some updates to Sony’s Pulse Explore wireless earbuds. Following the update, you’ll be able to use the earbuds’ sound equalizer feature, as well as the “sidetone” feature, which Sony says makes it easier to hear your voice during voice chats. In addition, when you have your Pulse Explore earbuds near your PS5, you’ll see a notification that will allow you to quickly pair them to the console. It makes it easier to switch between the PS5 and a PC with the earbuds in, similar to how other companies handle fast switching with their earbuds and ecosystems.

Finally, this update adds some generic performance and stability fixes, in addition to improved messages and usability on “some screens.” As with many developers, Sony doesn’t give away many details with these latter points.

You can see the full release notes below:

Version: 24.01-08.60.00

We’ve added new features in Parties.

In the Parties tab, you can now see the list of parties you’ve joined in the past. You can easily restart a party just by selecting it from the Recent list.

We’ve updated the device software for the PULSE Explore wireless earbuds.

You can now use the sound equalizer feature.

You can now use the sidetone feature, which makes it easier for you to hear your own voice in voice chats.

When you have a PULSE Explore wireless earbuds nearby, a notification will now appear to let you connect to them quickly. You can now easily switch the connection from your PC to your PS5 through this notification.

We’ve improved system software performance and stability.

We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.

How to update your PS5

If your PS5 has automatic updates enabled, this firmware update should install on its own. However, you can check for it manually from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If there’s an update available, you’ll see Update Available. Just hit Update System Software to update.

You Can Get a Free Google Nest and $100 Gift Card When You Sign Up With ADT

When you think of home security systems, that blue ADT sticker on windows probably comes to mind. ADT is one of the most popular home security systems, and now that they use Google devices with their service, it’s a great time for people in the Google ecosystem to jump in. Right now, ADT is offering people who sign up for its monthly security service, starting at $34.99 a month, a free Google Nest doorbell and a $100 Visa Reward card. You can keep both if you don’t like the service after the first month, but there are some caveats, so read carefully.

ADT’s Self Setup Home Security program is great for people who have Google Home devices already set up at their home (or would like to get started). The program also received an “excellent” review from PCMag. The service lets you choose between the “Build Your Own,” “Starter,” or “Premium” packages. They each let you pick and choose different Google Nest cameras, thermostats, smart hubs and other Google devices to set up your security system. As long as you are signed up for one of ADT’s video monitoring plans and have a purchase price of at least $500 from the equipment you choose (the “Premium” plan is automatically eligible), you are eligible for the free Google Nest and $100 Visa card promotion.

Reaching the $500 minimum purchase price is not hard to do, given how much these Google gadgets cost. The terms and conditions say if you choose the Self Setup security package plan, which starts you off with an ADT Smart Home Hub and an ADT door/window sensor for $194.98, you can cancel after one month and still keep all the equipment you purchased plus the freebies (as long as you meet the $500 minimum purchase price). If you choose the pro installation instead of doing it yourself, you will have to be on the subscription plan for at least 36 months.

The video monitoring service gives you access to view your own video footage and has intrusion detection and other features (the Pro Monitoring lets ADT take control of the door and window sensors and can call the police for certain triggers).

As you can see in the screenshot above, I chose a Google Nest camera, a wired indoor Google Nest camera, an ADT motion sensor monitor, and an ADT window sticker to reach the $500 minimum to be eligible for the free Google Nest Doorbell and the $100 Visa gift card. There are many combinations and different plans you can choose to be eligible for this promotion; the above is just one example and likely the cheapest possible example.

Although you can probably find some of these Google devices at discounts if you wait throughout the year, the free Google Nest and $100 gift card make this deal a great one for anyone looking to get or change their security system, especially if they like Google devices. This deal runs until Feb. 5.

Fool Your Friends With This Three-ingredient Cheater’s Crème Brûlée

Crème brûlée seems like the intimidating sort of French dessert meant only for bougie restaurants. Even though the traditional version is relatively straightforward with a manageable ingredient list, the technique is what’s likely to scare off new bakers. Custards belong to a finicky category of their own. Avoid the stress and insecurity of a proper crème brûlée, and make this cheater version with ice cream.

Crème brûlée normally requires the careful tempering of eggs with scalding cream. If you mix everything correctly, you’ll be rewarded with a silky custard after baking. However, if you don’t, you could end up with a broken custard, a lumpy custard, or one that never sets.

Lucky for us, vanilla custard comes pre-made and lasts indefinitely in the freezer section of your grocery store. Ice cream, blessedly, is a frozen, aerated custard. It includes all the usual ingredients—cream, milk, eggs, flavorings, and sugar—with the helpful addition of emulsifiers and maybe thickeners, depending on the brand. All things that help stabilize and keep the custard from breaking. These are just little safety nets us cheaters are smart enough to take advantage of when making quick, fool-proof desserts.

How to make crème brûlée from ice cream

Besides speed and ease, part of the beauty of this trick is that you’re not required to make a big batch. You can make a single serving for a solo night in, or two servings for an easy Valentine’s Day dessert.

1. Melt the ice cream

Grab a pint of vanilla bean ice cream. (Actual vanilla bean is a tad out of budget for me; vanilla bean ice cream works just fine.) Your goal is a half-cup of melted ice cream, so scoop a little more than what appears to be half of a cup into a microwavable measuring cup. Microwave it for 20 to 30 seconds, or until it’s almost completely melted. There should still be a little solid hunk left in the center. Stir it to melt that last bit without bringing the temperature up too high.

2. Add the egg yolk

A whisk in a cup of custard.
After the yolk is mixed in, the custard will be a bit foamy on top.

The ice cream should be barely warm before you add the egg. If it’s hot then let it sit and cool for a few minutes. Whisk in one egg yolk until the mixture is smooth.

3. Bake the custard

Set the ramekin inside a larger vessel with tall sides, like a cake pan or a loaf pan. Pour the custard mixture into a six-ounce ramekin. Put the cake pan with the ramekin in the oven and pour hot water into the cake pan until the water comes halfway up the side of the ramekin. Be careful not to splash any water into the custard. Bake it at 325°F for 30 to 35 minutes. To check for doneness, lightly shake the ramekin. The edges should be set and the center should jiggle slightly without being watery. It’s expected for the top to have a bubbly texture. Don’t worry, this will be covered with sugar at the end.

4. Cool the crème brûlée

Take the cake pan and crème brûlée out of the oven and let it cool in the water bath for 10 minutes. Lift out the ramekin, dry it off and put it in the fridge to cool for at least four hours to chill and set.

5. Top it with sugar and brûlée

Use more sugar if you like a thicker layer of caramel.

When you’re ready to serve the dessert, take it out of the fridge 30 minutes beforehand to take the chill off. Sprinkle a teaspoon or two of plain granulated sugar over the top. You can dump off the excess if you prefer a thin caramel layer. Use a kitchen blow torch to carefully melt and caramelize the sugar, or, with great vigilance, put the ramekin under the broiler for a minute or so.

I was astounded by the result. While I will always agree that the traditional method produces a “true” crème brûlée, you could fool anyone with this hack. As long as you’re careful not to overcook it (that goes for any custard, cheater or not), the interior is luxurious and silky. It positively exudes aromatic vanilla and cream, and of course there’s never a problem with a crunchy caramel shell.

You can keep it classic with vanilla ice cream, or explore a little. Use caramel ice cream, coffee ice cream, or chocolate. Stick to the pure flavors without chunks of fruit or mix-ins because those could sink to the bottom or otherwise mess with the custard’s consistency. One pint of ice cream has the potential to make you four servings, so go ahead and multiply this recipe for a small group. Or just sit pretty with three more opportunities for an easy crème brûlée in your future.

Single-serving Cheater’s Crème Brûlée Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup melted vanilla ice cream

  • 1 egg yolk

  • ½ tablespoon granulated sugar (for the caramel topping)

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place a 6-ounce ramekin in the center of a 9-inch cake pan.

2. The melted ice cream should be cool or barely warm. Whisk in the egg yolk until smooth.

3. Pour the mixture into the ramekin. Place the cake pan and ramekin together in the oven. Pour hot water into the cake pan to make a water bath. The water line should rise halfway up the ramekin.

4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the edges are set and the center slightly jiggles. Cool the custard in the pan for 10 minutes and then remove the ramekin, dry it off, and allow it to set in the fridge for at least four hours, but ideally overnight.

5. Let the crème brûlée sit at room temperature 30 minutes before serving. Sprinkle the sugar over the surface and shake the ramekin to make an even layer. Use a kitchen blow torch to caramelize the sugar, or place the ramekin under the broiler for one or two minutes to do the same. Once the caramel layer cools, serve immediately.

How ‘PEE’ Can Help You Write Better

Does the prospect of writing an essay make you squirm? Do you dread drafting an email? Maybe you should PEE. Not literally (unless you gotta go): It’s an acronym that can help you become a better, more efficient written communicator. As gross and silly as it sounds, it’s an easy way to remember what you need to do when you’re writing so the audience receives your message.

What is PEE?

PEE (point, evidence, explanation) is an acronym that helps you remember everything your paragraph should include if you want your paper, report, memo, speech, or whatever else to deliver your message just right. Mnemonic phrases are excellent at helping us retain and recall information; especially memorable ones—like, yes, PEE—are bound to get lodged deep in the old memory bank.

  • Point: The main idea of your paragraph, which should be direct and clear.

  • Evidence: Anything that backs up the point and relates to it directly. Your evidence is whatever you’re referring to to make the point, whether it’s data, research, or past work.

  • Explanation: The explanation will be your conclusion, during which you outline how the evidence supports your point and why it matters.

How to use PEE to write better

When you set out to write something, start by considering what your main idea—or overall point—is. You can make a mind map or ChatGPT to generate an outline of what the full body of work will touch on. Read over your outline, thinking of PEE: What is the point? What evidence do I have to support that point? How can I explain the ways the evidence fits together to make the point?

From there, you have to create paragraphs that align with each element of your outline. Again, think of PEE as you write. Your first sentence will be your point, you’ll follow it up with evidence, and you’ll explain how it all works together. Once you’ve done that, you can move on to a new paragraph, following the format again.

When you’re done, whether you need to send a single-paragraph email or submit a long essay, review your work, considering whether each paragraph and the entire composition align with PEE. Intros—to entire works and paragraphs alike—should feature direct assertions and nothing more, as the point. Evidence should be substantial and the explanation of how it upholds the point should be thorough.

For instance, say you’re in charge of restocking your company’s kitchen with snacks, but you’re struggling to take inventory because people keep putting Goldfish in the bin that is designated for Chips Ahoy. You want to send everyone an email telling them to knock it off, right? Using PEE, your single-paragraph message could look like this: “I can’t make a new snack order until I complete this month’s inventory. Last month, I ordered an extra case of Goldfish and too few Chips Ahoy because seven bags of Goldfish were stashed in the Chips Ahoy container. As a result, we didn’t have enough Chips Ahoy to meet demand this month. When selecting a snack, please put unwanted bags back in their corresponding bins to make sure we have enough of what everyone wants on hand each month.” You made a point, backed it up with evidence, and tied it all together. Thanks, PEE!

You Can Get Hundreds of Free Cozy Mystery E-books This Week

Although Stuff Your Kindle Day is probably the most popular free e-book event, it’s not the only one. Cozy Mystery Book Blast, one of the many smaller e-book giveaway events throughout the year, is happening this Thursday, Jan. 25.

What is the Cozy Mystery Book Blast event?

The Cozy Mystery Book Blast event, like other smaller free e-book events, is one of the many times of the year when authors share their e-books for free. You can think of it as a Stuff Your Kindle Day, but only for mystery and mystery-adjacent books. Most authors partaking are indie or relatively new. These events are usually run by book blogs, in this case, the Cozy Mystery Book Club.

There’s a Kindle out there for every type of reader:

How to get free e-books

Like Stuff Your Kindle Day, these types of events are not necessarily only for Kindle readers. Any type of e-reader will do. In fact, most of these can be read on your phone, laptop, or tablet. You can see the full list of e-books once the event starts, but for these kinds of events, it’s not rare to see some listed early and be left past the day of the event.

The free books are sorted into three categories: contemporary cozies, historical cozies, and paranormal cozies. The steps to getting the e-books are very similar to Stuff Your Kindle Day. You’ll see a short synopsis of the book and then a choice of how you want to download it. If you have a Kindle, follow these instructions:

If you chose Amazon as your retailer, make sure you’re not being redirected to the phone application because you won’t see the free book option; instead, use the web browser Amazon page (or just do it on your computer). Also, make sure you’re not clicking the Kindle Unlimited ”read for free” button, as that will direct you to start a Kindle Unlimited subscription; instead, click the “buy now for free” button to send the book directly to the Kindle linked to your account.

You’ll know you did it right when you see a “Thanks, [your name]!” order summary saying the e-book is being auto-delivered to the Kindle Cloud Reader. Click the“Read now in Kindle Cloud Reader” button on the order summary to start reading your e-book.

Once you download the e-book this way, it’ll be yours to keep for good.

The Best Wifi Routers to Buy in 2024

While you can usually get a router and modem setup from your internet provider, buying and using your own router can often improve the performance and coverage of your home. The market is flooded with options, but some stand out above the rest.

TP-Link Archer AX21

TP-Link Archer AX21 wireless router

At under $100, it’s hard to beat the TP-Link Archer AX21 for its affordability and and support for up to Gigabit speeds. Equipped with EasyMesh, a simple way to set up a mesh network with different access points, the TP-Link Archer AX21 is a solid router that stands up to the pricier options without sacrificing a lot.

This router has full support for Wi-Fi 6 and can even be set up to work with Alexa. It has support for up to 1.8 Gbps speeds, and a four-antenna system to expand your signal to more places throughout the home. If you want a solid router that isn’t going to need to be replaced for at least a few years, but won’t leave you wanting for any features, then TP-Link is a solid place to start.

You can buy the TP-Link Archer AX21 on Amazon for $99.99.

Synology WRX560

Synology wi-fi router

Credit: Synology

The Synology WRX560 is certainly more expensive than the TP-Link above, but that’s because it comes with full dual-band support for Wifi 6 and the option to run internet connections up to 2.5 Gbps. That means this router is essentially future-proofed for whenever Google Fiber comes to your area and offers speeds greater than 1 Gigabit.

What really makes the Synology WRX560 so special, and the reason why our friends at PCMag recommend it, is the built-in support for multiple network IDs so you can set up specific configurations for computers, gaming consoles, or smartphones. It also has built-in parental controls, a VPN system, and can easily be integrated into a mesh system for improved coverage throughout your home.

You can purchase the Synology WRX560 on Amazon for $219.99.

Netgear Orbi RBK852 Mesh Router

Netgear Orbit wireless mesh router

If you have a large home or office that needs wifi, then a mesh router might be your best bet. These routers are designed to work across larger areas, as they combine the power of two systems to expand coverage without sacrificing speed or connectivity. The Netgear Orbi RBK852 is a great option for this kind of networking because it already comes with two systems: a router and a satellite extender.

This means you can support up to 5,000 square feet with your wifi signal, and you can even connect up to 100 devices to the system, ensuring all your home smart devices can be connected to the internet. It is a bit pricey, but that price gets you support for up to 6 Gbps speeds, so your home will be future-proofed for years to come.

The Netgear Orbi RBK852 is available on Amazon for $499.99.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Gaming Router

A great router is vital for all internet-demanding tasks like 4K streaming. But if you prefer playing video games to anything else, then investing in a gaming router could be a great choice. There are a lot of solid options out there, but one of the best is the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000.

This router is built from the ground up for gamers, including triple-level game acceleration, a subscription-free network security option, and the ability to support up to 10 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps, depending on which port you plug your device into.

The internal systems are also designed with gaming in mind, making it easy to do things like port forwarding and customizing for your internet connection to get the most out of your video games. It, too, is pricey, but that cost is more than made up for with the features it offers, and our friends at PCMag even gave it a big thumbs up for its performance and features.

Add the ASUS ROG Rapture Gaming Router to your setup from Amazon for $399.99.

USDA Urban and Community Forestry Program Award to Spur New Tree Cover Near Urban Congregations

ATLANTA, Jan. 23, 2024 – Today, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a $1 million award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry program will go to the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC), to help church leaders plant trees, expand access to green spaces and develop the local workforce in the communities they serve.
