Mariners win eighth straight behind George Kirby gem, tie Astros for AL West lead

The Seattle Mariners are the hottest team in the American League, and now they’ve reached the top of the division.

With ]

The big turning point for Seattle was the MLB trade deadline, when the Mariners picked up the Arizona Diamondbacks’ corner infield with separate deals for third baseman Eugenio Suarez and first baseman Josh Naylor, plus a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Caleb Ferguson. The Mariners are 10-1 since the deadline passed on July 31.

It was Naylor who came up big Tuesday, delivering the only RBI of the game with a single in the first inning.

Of course, the most valuable player for the game was starting pitcher George Kirby, who struck out seven, walked none and allowed only three hits in seven scoreless innings on 87 pitches. Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier and Andrés Muñoz combined for two more scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish the shutout, the Mariners’ ninth of the season.

A rough stretch for the Astros has coincided with the Mariners’ surge. Houston added at the deadline too, with a Carlos Correa reunion, but a 2-8 stretch in late July and early August opened the door for Seattle. Making matters worse, the Astros had to place All-Star closer Josh Hader on the IL Tuesday due to a shoulder strain.

With 42 games remaining for both Houston and Seattle, the AL West is shaping up to be a dead sprint between the division’s standard-setter of the past decade and the upstart with the AL MVP favorite and plenty of young talent. For now, the Mariners can definitely say momentum is on their side.

And that’s not all that’s at stake for the Mariners, as there’s also the matter of Cal Raleigh, who leads MLB with 45 home runs and could break the records for homers by a catcher (Salvador Perez, 48 in 2021), home runs among switch-hitters (Mickey Mantle, 54 in 1961) and even homers in the American League (Aaron Judge, 62 in 2022).

Arizona Cardinals place WR Trishton Jackson on IR, add undrafted rookie WR

The Arizona Cardinals made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday dealing with the wide receiver room. After receiver Trishton Jackson suffered a thumb inury in the team’s 20-17 preseason-opening win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the team placed him on injured reserve.

Replacing him on offseason roster is receiver Kelly Akharaiyi, whom they signed Tuesday.

Akharaiyi is an undrafted rookie who signed originally with the Buffalo Bills in May. He is six feet tall and 201 pounds and played collegiately for Tyler Junior College, UTEP and, in 2024, Mississippi State. Last year at Mississippi State, he had 391 yards and two touchdowns on 25 receptions.

As a back-of-the-roster addition midway through the preseason, it is unlikely he will do enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but perhaps he can earn a spot on someone’s practice squad. If he gets any action in the team’s preseason game on Saturday against the Denver Broncos, it will be late in the second half, but we can see if he can impress at all.

After a second missed Brookville field goal, Valley View’s Tristen Smith scored on an 8-yard run to seal the victory.

The win set up a Week 10 winner-take-all showdown with Waynesville. The Spartans won 61-21 to claim their second SWBL Buckeye Division title in three seasons.

North Carolina trending for 4-star ATH CJ Sadler

North Carolina already has 35 commits in its 2026 recruiting class, but head coach Bill Belichick and his staff are trending to add another big piece to the puzzle later this week, according to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Detroit Cass Technical four-star athlete CJ Sadler will announce his commitment this Friday, Aug. 15. He’s down to four schools, but all signs continue to point toward the Tar Heels. Four predictions have now been logged in favor of UNC landing the blue-chipper.

Belichick is after do-it-all athletes and Sadler fits that mold. He dominates as a receiver and as a defensive back at the prep level. Playing under the legendary head coach and the relationships that Sadler has built with the Tar Heels has put them in the driver’s seat ahead of Michigan, Maryland and Colorado.

“With coach Bill, that’s a big check there. When I went there he brought all his guys with him from the Patriots,” Sadler told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong last month. “The amount of NFL experience they have on the staff. I know If I got there I would get developed there.”

Sadler took his official visit to Chapel Hill on the weekend of June 6. If he were to choose UNC, he would be the highest-ranked prospect in its 2026 class. Sadler is the No. 123 overall prospect, No. 6 athlete and top-ranked player in Michigan, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies.

Sadler is currently one of just 10 uncommitted blue-chip prospects in the 2026 cycle. The board continues to slim down ahead of football season.

To date, the Tar Heels have the nation’s No. 20 class, according to the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Of the 35 commits in the mix, eight are four-stars.

On Aug. 1, Nashville DCA four-star tight end Carson Sneed flipped to UNC from Tennessee, nearly a year after he originally pledged to the in-state Vols. He’s one of three blue-chippers that have flipped to to the Tar Heels this cycle, alongside safety Jakob Weatherspoon (Ohio State) and defensive lineman Trashawn Ruffin (Texas A&M).

Weatherspoon’s flip from the in-state Buckeyes came out of the blue to most last month. He’s currently the No. 2 commit on the pledge list, behind just Jackson (Ala.) four-star wide receiver Keeyun Chapman. Ruffin has been in the class since mid-March.

UNC also has a top-notch quarterback in its class via Loganville (Ga.) Grayson four-star quarterback Travis Burgess. An Elite 11 finalist, Burgess chose Belichick and Co. over NC State and Auburn, among others. He’s now the nation’s No. 14 signal-caller ahead of his senior campaign.
