Knicks Notes: Josh Hart making case to stick in lineup, Mitchell Robinson and Tyler Kolek impressing off bench

Maybe wins against the Hornets and Nets earlier this week didn’t do it for you. But Josh Hart’s play in the Knicks’ win over Milwaukee on Friday has to move the needle toward keeping him in the starting lineup.

Hart was everywhere on Friday. Guarding Giannis Antetokounmpo. Pushing the ball in transition. Play-making as a release to the double-teams on Jalen Brunson. Rebounding the ball.

It was a prototypical Hart game.

If his play in the starting lineup continues, Mike Brown may have to think long and hard about making a permanent change.

Brown in the last three games has gone with Karl-Anthony Towns at center, Mitchell Robinson off the bench and Hart in the lineup.

Hart is averaging seven assists and 12 rebounds per game in that span.

Again, you can brush off those numbers when they come against the Hornets and Nets, but in a highly competitive game against Antetokounmpo and the Bucks, Hart’s performance was crucial.

“He played well on both sides of the ball. He’s in a good rhythm right now,” Brunson said after the game. “Just need him to stick with that. He’s a key part, an X-factor in what we do.”

Speaking of lineups, Brown sounds like a coach who wants to see more of Robinson off the bench.

Earlier in the season, Brown seemed to favor starting Robinson alongside Towns, but the big man has come off the bench in each of his last two games.

“I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far,” Brown said after Robinson’s six points, seven rebounds and two steals off the bench Friday.

“Mitch has given us a great punch off the bench. His ability to offensive rebound against starters and backups has been huge for us. So he has to keep bringing that to the table. So he gives us a different look in the starting lineup and then gives us a different look when he comes off the bench.”

The guess here is that Robinson will continue to come off the bench if everyone is healthy.

When everyone does return, though, the big question for Brown will be whether to keep Hart in the starting lineup over options such as Landry Shamet and Miles McBride.

MVP TALK FOR BRUNSON

Brunson had 37 points on 21 shots on Friday night. He was on fire in the third quarter (16 points, 7-8 FG’s) and then made all the right reads in the fourth quarter when Milwaukee sent a second defender at him.

He has scored 27 or more points in each of the past seven games.

“He should be talked about right now — it’s early — but as a potential MVP,” Brown said after the game. “There’s not enough chatter — which, it’s early, so I’m not throwing a fit — but the guy had 37 tonight on 12-of-21. And he gets blitzed often and he makes the right basketball play. He basically did what he was supposed to do and that’s why I don’t talk about it a lot because that’s what he’s capable of doing and that’s what he’s supposed to do, being of that stature.

“But hopefully you guys and your peers will start really talking the right way about this young man in terms of him having some MVP talk because that’s what he is,” Brown said, referring to the media. “We’re not playing the best basketball right now but we’re trending in the right direction and he’s the engine behind it. So to me, he just did what he’s supposed to do, which equates to him being the MVP of the league.”

Brown also praised another Knicks point guard on Friday — he likes what he’s seen from Tyler Kolek lately.

Kolek had five points (all off of Hart assists), two steals and an assist in 10 minutes against Milwaukee.

This continues a strong week overall for the youngster who chipped in five assists and three rebounds against Brooklyn, then seven points and three assists against Charlotte.

“I didn’t play him as much as I wanted to tonight but the last two games when he’s gotten minutes, he’s been really good defensively,” Brown said. “He’s been really physical without fouling. He’s been really good pushing the basketball and distributing the basketball while getting us into our offense. I expect nothing but that from him and again I wished I’d played him a little longer because again, [he’s] on a pretty good run.”

NBA Cup 2025: Magic and Thunder grab top seeds in knockout round in final day of group play

The final day of group play in the 2025 NBA Cup began with six spots in the knockout rounds still up for grabs and three straight winner-take-all games to decide a group. It was as climactic a day as the NBA could have hoped for when instituting the in-season tournament.

When the dust cleared, eight teams were left standing. Here’s how they’ll line up in the knockout round

No. 4 Miami Heat at No. 1 Orlando Magic (6 p.m. ET, Prime)

No. 3 New York Knicks at No. 2 Toronto Raptors (8:30 p.m. ET, Prime)

No. 4 Phoenix Suns at No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder (7:30 p.m. ET, Prime)

No. 3 San Antonio Spurs at No. 2 Los Angeles Lakers (10 p.m. ET, Prime)

Each quarterfinal game will be played at the higher seed’s arena. The winners of each game will then advance and face their conference’s other winner in the semifinals in Las Vegas on Dec. 13. The championship game will take place on Dec. 16, also in Las Vegas. All of those games except for the championship will count toward regular-season records.

Before that, here’s how the winner take-all-games all went down on Friday.

In a stunning comeback, the San Antonio Spurs erased an 18-point deficit to defeat the Denver Nuggets, 139-136, and win Group C in the West.

Toward the end of the first half, Denver had pulled away completely behind a big run, outscoring San Antonio 41-18 in the second quarter. The lead was 15 points at halftime.

But Denver’s hot streak slowed in the third quarter, giving the Spurs a chance to catch up. San Antonio went on an 18-3 run at the end of the third, overcoming a double-digit deficit and taking the lead by capitalizing on multiple Nuggets turnovers. In total, the Spurs scored 30 points off Denver turnovers, with the Nuggets committing 17 turnovers throughout the game.

The two teams traded leads throughout the fourth quarter. But as Denver’s turnovers woes continued, San Antonio took advantage.

Jamal Murray finished with a game-high 37 points, but even his hot third quarter wasn’t enough to put the Nuggets over the top. Devin Vassell scored 35 points and hit several key baskets in the second half to boost the Spurs’ lead, with Julian Champagnie adding 25 points and 10 rebounds.

San Antonio finished 3-1 in the group stage to advance to the knockout round.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are 19-1, and 4-0 in NBA Cup play.

They still haven’t achieved their final form — starting center Isaiah Hartenstein was out Friday — but got much closer to it with the return of Jalen Williams, who missed the season’s first 19 games due to a pair of wrist procedures.

Despite Williams not having the biggest debut (11 points on 3-of-12 shooting, 8 assists) the Thunder kept winning in a 123-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns to take Group A in the West. With a +75 scoring differential, the Thunder will be the top seed in the Western Conference’s knockout round.

It was again Shai Gilgeous-Alexander making everything work for OKC, with the reigning MVP posting 37 points on 10-of-20 shooting plus 8 assists and only 1 turnover. Six different OKC players scored in double-figures.

OKC needed pretty much all of them, as the Suns didn’t go quietly. A 15-point fourth-quarter lead nearly disappeared for the Thunder, but an and-1 from Gilgeous-Alexander gave them just enough breathing room that Phoenix never got the ball with a chance to take the lead.

The Desmond Bane trade bore some fruit for the Orlando Magic in the NBA Cup on Friday.

Behind 37 points from Bane, the Magic defeated the Detroit Pistons 112-109 in a winner-take-all game that decided the Eastern Conference’s Group B. With a 4-0 record and +64 score differential, Orlando will have the top seed in the East’s knockout round.

It was nearly another thrilling win for the Pistons, who erased a 10-point fourth-quarter lead and had their own star posting a big night with Cade Cunningham’s 39-point triple-double. The Pistons held the lead up to 2:11 left in the fourth quarter, but a Bane and-1 gave the Magic an advantage they never gave back.

The result also gives the Pistons their second straight loss, after previously tying a franchise record with 13 straight wins.

Elsewhere, the New York Knicks clinched Group C with a win over the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Miami Heat grabbed the wild card in the East as the only non-group winner with a 3-1 record. The four East teams in the knockout round will be the Magic, Toronto Raptors, Knicks and Heat, seeded in that order.

Mets’ Luisangel Acuña swinging hot bat in Venezuelan Winter League

Luisangel Acuña survived his injury scare down in Winter Ball. The young Mets infielder was forced to leave the game last week after being hit by a pitch in the forearm. Just days later, though, he’s back doing damage in the Cardenales de Lara lineup.

Acuña was on-base a total of five times on Thursday night, including a pair of extra-base hits.

He started the game with a solo homer to dead center, lined a double to the gap in the fourth, drew a pair of walks over his next two at-bats, then kept things going with a two out single in the bottom of the 10th.

The 23-year-old then followed that with another two-hit game on Friday.

He tripled and came around for the little league homer in the fourth.

Then, after grounding out in the sixth, he came up in the bottom of the eighth and beat out an infield single to spark a game-tying rally.

Acuña grounded into a double play the 10th, but still has been putting together a stretch of strong play.

He’s now hitting .268 with 10 extra-base hits, 13 RBI, 17 walks, 18 strikeouts, a .430 on-base percentage, and a .950 OPS through 22 games.

Fourteen of those games have been at shortstop, and he’s been out in center in the other eight.

NBA Cup 2025: Standings, schedule and what’s at stake for teams battling for final spots in knockout round

We’ve reached the final day of the NBA Cup’s group stage, and six of the eight spots in the knockout round are still up for grabs. The Raptors and Lakers are the only teams to have punched a ticket to the tournament’s quarterfinals, while 16 teams have been eliminated. Who else will advance?

In the East, the Cavaliers, Magic, Pistons, Heat, Knicks and Bucks are still alive. In the West, the Thunder, Suns, Grizzlies, Clippers, Nuggets and Spurs could still move on. Let’s break it down.

As a refresher, all 30 teams were placed into groups of five based on last season’s regular-season records and a random drawing, creating three divisions in each conference. In the event two or more teams are tied within a group, the following tiebreakers will come in to play (in sequential order):

  • Head-to-head record in Group Play

  • Point differential in Group Play (overtime scoring will not count in tiebreaker)

  • Total points scored in Group Play (overtime scoring will not count in tiebreaker)

  • Record from the 2024-25 NBA regular season

  • Random drawing (in the unlikely scenario that two or more teams are still tied following the previous tiebreakers)

Here’s what you need to know for Friday’s 11-game slate.

Jarvis scores a hat trick as Hurricanes pull away in third period to beat Jets 5-1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Seth Jarvis scored three goals and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 on Friday in a matchup that featured a pair of rookie goalies.

Jarvis, a Winnipeg native, clinched the hat trick on an empty-net goal with 1:03 to play — one of four Carolina goals in the final 8 1/2 minutes.

Jordan Martinook broke a third-period tie with his first goal of November before Jarvis’ second tally of the game came just 47 seconds later. Shayne Gostisbehere and Andrei Svechnikov each provided two assists. Alexander Nikishin completed the scoring.

Brandon Bussi made 12 saves for Carolina, which won for the first time in three games. He improved his record to 6-1.

Mark Scheifele scored his team-best 13th goal for the Jets, who have lost a season-worst four consecutive games. Winnipeg goalie Thomas Milic stopped 30 shots in his NHL debut.

Jarvis leads the Hurricanes with 15 goals.

The game was tied 1-1 after two periods but Carolina went ahead on Martinook’s goal with 8:08 left, set up by a pass from Mark Jankowski.

Milic stopped the first 10 shots he faced before Jarvis scored his first, converting off Shayne Gostisbehere’s pass with 3:54 left in the first period.

The Jets pulled even with 9:19 remaining in the second period, taking Carolina’s offensive zone turnover the other way for Scheifele’s goal. Milic stopped all 10 shots he faced in the second period.

Winnipeg has lost six of its last eight road games.

Insider reveals new Luka Doncic post-Lakers trade details that should frighten rest of NBA

Los Angeles Lakers star guard Luka Doncic is in the process of completing his first full season with the franchise.

The five-time All-Star was hit with likely the most shocking news of his NBA career nine months ago; the Dallas Mavericks agreed to trade him to the Lakers for Anthony Davis.

On Friday, an NBA Insider revealed new post-trade details regarding Doncic that should frighten the rest of the NBA.

I mean, the wounds might not be fresh, but there are definitely scabs,” The Athletic’s Dan Woike stated.

“Every time a Doncic highlight gets posted or whenever Doncic mentions the Cowboys or the Mavericks — like he did in Oklahoma City when a reporter asked him about Harrison’s firing — I see there are still feelings there.”

“When the Lakers played Dallas last season, Doncic looked like someone who had stumbled into the wrong locker room and put on the wrong jersey.”

“This year, he looks like he belongs on the Lakers. He has real bonds with players, real relationships with staff members, and an actual sense of belonging with the city.”

Essentially, while Doncic was the Lakers’ leading scorer last season despite only appearing in 28 regular-season contests (he averaged 28.2 points per game), it was easy to tell that something was off.

Doncic was outspoken about his love for the Mavericks before the blockbuster trade, frequently stating that he was fortunate to be part of the growing organization.

However, when Dallas shipped him to the Lakers in February, Doncic felt betrayed, affecting his ability to fully embrace a Los Angeles franchise clearly fond of his generational offensive capabilities.

Now that Doncic has had time to not only decompress but also build chemistry with his Lakers teammates, he’s succeeded in starting the 2025-26 season on a historic note (after the Lakers’ 108-106 win over the Utah Jazz last Sunday, Doncic became the first player to record 400+ points and 100+ assists through 12 games).

The 26-year-old has also guided the Lakers to a 13-4 record thus far, and considering he’s just getting started in Los Angeles, the sky is the limit for him and the surging Lakers.

Avon vs. Walsh Jesuit live score, updates, highlights from OHSAA D-II state semifinal game

Avon vs. Walsh Jesuit live score, updates, highlights from OHSAA D-II state semifinal game originally appeared on The Sporting News.

The two best teams in Ohio high school football meet on one field Friday night.

It’s not even a state final. It’s just an OHSAA Division II state semifinal, and it’s Avon against Walsh Jesuit in a massive clash at the University of Akron.

Drew Pasteur’s Fantastic 50 ranks Avon and Walsh as the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the state for any division (for reference, D-III Toledo Central Catholic is No. 3, followed by D-I’s St. Edwards at No. 4).

It’s a matchup with great narratives, too.

Avon is the defending Division II state champion. They made school history last December on a snowy day in Canton.

Walsh hadn’t been here in a while. They couldn’t get past crosstown rival Archbishop Hoban.

Hoban ended Walsh’s season each of the last two years. But this time around, Walsh beat Hoban in the regional final to move on.

This will be Walsh’s first appearance in the state semifinal round since the 1999 season, when the Warriors went all the way and won a state title.

AVON 17, WALSH JESUIT 7: 2ND QUARTER

Refresh for latest.

SECOND QUARTER

– Avon had a screen pass all the way down to the 1-yard line, but a holding penalty backed it up to the 18-yard line for a third-and-6.

– Walsh went for it on fourth-and-4 from its own 48, and Avon knocked the ball down to get the turnover on downs.

– FIELD GOAL AVON. The Eagles stalled inside the 10-yard line. A delay of game backed the field goal attempt up five yards, so it ended up being a 27-yard attempt. The kick was good for Jensen Petro. (Avon 17-7, 5:59 until half)

INTERCEPTION AVON. Sam Ulery snagged a pass near midfield and returned it back to inside the 30-yard line. Another interception for Avon. Eagles lead 14-7 with about eight minutes until the half.

– David Ternosky took a QB draw up the middle for a key first down run to push the ensuing Walsh drive over midfield with nine minutes until the half.

– TOUCHDOWN AVON. Walsh had second-and-goal at the 5. Caden Clapham picked off the pass off a tip at the 2-yard line and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown. Clapham had fumbled in the first quarter, but he got his redemption. (Avon 14-7)

FIRST QUARTER

– Walsh is in the red zone at the end of the first quarter.

– Walsh’s Milan Paris went up for a jump ball on third-and-8 to extend the drive over midfield.

TOUCHDOWN AVON. Avon made Walsh’s failed fourth down pay off. The Eagles found the end zone on a 1-yard Cam Wendell TD run. (7-7, 5:40 1Q)

– Walsh went for it on fourth down and didn’t get it, giving Avon the ball at the Walsh 48.

– Avon stopped Walsh after the fumble, but the Eagles didn’t get anything going and had to punt it back.

– Walsh forced a fumble on Avon’s opening possession to get the ball back.

TOUCHDOWN WALSH. Milan Paris returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. The Miami (Florida) commit opens the game with a bang. (Walsh, 7-0)

PREGAME

– This should be an incredibly well-attended game at the University of Akron. Walsh and Avon fans won’t have too long a trip to support their powerful teams.

– Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

– It’s shaping up as a clear evening in Akron, with potential for a few small snow flurries:

Vikings predicted to transform offense with dynamic 35-TD star in 2026 draft

Vikings predicted to transform offense with dynamic 35-TD star in 2026 draft originally appeared on The Sporting News.
Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of a disappointing 2025 season.

The team had high hopes with a strong defense and J.J. McCarthy taking over as the starting quarterback, but things have not gone well. Entering Week 13, the Vikings are sitting at 4-7 and are stuck in the basement of the NFC North.

The Vikings are technically not eliminated from the playoffs just yet, but it’s clear some upgrades need to be made this offseason. Jacob Infante of PFSN recently published an updated mock draft, and he has the Vikings adding a dynamic athlete to the offense.

With the No. 12 pick, Infante has the Vikings selecting Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Love is thought of as the top running back in the 2026 class by many.

Regarding this potential pick, Infante offered the following:

A lot is going wrong with the Minnesota Vikings’ offense right now, and a lot of it falls on bad quarterback play. It’s too early to give up on J.J. McCarthy, so their best hope is to surround him with more talent to take the pressure off of him. In this 2026 NFL Mock Draft, they do that by taking the best running back in the class.

Excluding positional value, I’d argue Jeremiyah Love is at least a top-five player in the 2026 NFL Draft. He falls a little because he’s a running back. Still, he’s an explosive runner who combines sound decision-making between the tackles with elite speed, quick feet, and the ability to change direction, along with toughness that shows up both in the run game and as a receiver after the catch.

As Infante mentioned, McCarthy has struggled in 2025, so it would be wise to add weapons for 2026. Improving the ground game would take a ton of pressure off the young quarterback, and Love would do just that.

In 2025, Love has played in 11 games and has 1,306 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns. The elite runner has also caught 26 passes for 274 yards and three receiving touchdowns.

Love has now had at least 1,100 yards and 17 touchdowns in consecutive seasons. The running back helped the Fighting Irish get all the way to the national championship last year, and the team should make the Playoff again this season.

Minnesota is currently 25th in total rushing yards. Only three teams have fewer rushing first downs than the Vikings in 2025, and that’s not good when the passing attack is also faltering.

Love would help move the chains when McCarthy struggles and also give the young quarterback an outlet in the passing game. Aaron Jones will be another year older in 2026, and both he and Jordan Mason will be free agents in 2027. Love could be the future of the backfield in the Twin Cities.

CARROLLTON, Georgia, Nov. 28 — The No. 2/SN No. 2 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams have been Georgia’s top-ranked team throughout the 2025 season.

And the current No. 5/SN No. 5 Buford [GA] Wolves have maintained their position as the Peach State’s No. 2 program.

But somewhat quietly, the Carrollton [GA] Trojans have worked their way into the No. 3 position in Georgia, a spot they’ve held for several weeks in The Sporting News High School Football Top 25. And, in the past two weeks, they’ve moved up from No. 20 to No. 10, taking a big seven-spot jump this past week after dismantling the highly-regarded Harrison [Kennesaw, GA] Hoyas in a 51-6 blowout.

The margin of victory in that game served notice that, perhaps, the Trojans deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with the other two frontrunners in Georgia. And the outcome is reflected in that big move in the rankings, positioning the Trojans to possibly even climb into the Top 5 if they can upset the Rams tonight on their own home field.
